GGACP celebrates Halloween week by revisiting this conversation from 2021 as Gilbert and Frank celebrate the 90th anniversaries (1931-2021) of Universal Studios' original “Dracula” and “Frankenstein” with Oscar-winning makeup creator Rick Baker and late author-historian David J. Skal. In this episode, Rick and David talk about sympathetic monsters, mad scientists (real and imagined), the genius of Jack Pierce and the premature deaths of Colin Clive, Dwight Frye and Lon Chaney. Also, David interviews Carla Laemmle, Rick turns Martin Landau into Bela Lugosi, Glenn Strange appears in Boris Karloff's obit and Bram Stoker's widow tries to kill off “Nosferatu.” PLUS: Ghoulardi! “Man of a Thousand Faces”! The influence of Forrest J. Ackerman! Bette Davis (almost) plays the Bride of Frankenstein! And the boys (once again) try to make sense of “The Black Cat”! Learn more about your ad choices. Natalie Wood was one of the most loved child stars of the silver screen in the mid-20th century, and the rare celebrity who was able to transition gracefully into grown-up roles all while maintaining an air of dignity and grace. She acted alongside Orson Welles, James Dean, Warren Beatty, and Bette Davis, and many of her roles remain iconic decades later. But beneath her unprecedented professional success was a life unseen by the public – a life full of fears, paranoias, pills, gypsy curses, and secrets. And when she drowned at the age of 43, more secrets would come floating to the surface. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including sexual assault and suicide.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Jezebel, Bette Davis plays a sassy Southern belle who pushes prudish fiancé Henry Fonda away. And it's all over a red dress. Jezebel is a movie about manners, propriety and stubbornness in the Antebellum South (courteous though they are, they DO have plenty of slaves) with the looming threat of Yellow Fever. William Wyler's romance in and around New Orleans isn't an all-time classic, but Bette and Fay Bainter both won Oscars for their good, if not quite fantastic work. So coyly pull the back of your extra-long dress up with a riding crop and then spend a year or two being a semi-villain before you make a hard about-face into the land of self-sacrifice. Jeff Copeland talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his new book “Love You Madly, Holly Woodlawn” published by Feral House. The memoir depicts how an unlikely friendship evolved between a young gay writer and Holly Woodlawn one of Andy Warhol's superstars from the films “Trash” and “Women in Revolt” as well as being Lou Reed's Holly in the hit glam rock song "Walk on the Wild Side". The book is based on the lengthy collaboration between Jeff and Holly as they created the bestselling 1991 autobiography “A Low Life in High Heels: The Holly Woodlawn Story”. For the trash mondo fans this must-read book is a pure delight and a refreshing escape from current affairs. Holly is the embodiment of Auntie Mame and Bette Davis fueled by chardonnay introducing Jeff to the glamorous and sometimes larcenous world of a Warhol Superstar. In turn Jeff uses his writing and typing talent to give Holly the second chance at the fame she craves. This wild read that you just can't put down takes you on a ride through Hollywood in the late 1980's through the 90's. Buonopalooza rolls on with Robert Aldrich's Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). Following the massive success of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Aldrich re-teamed with Bette Davis for another Southern Gothic nightmare. This time, Davis plays Charlotte Hollis, a reclusive woman haunted by whispers of murder and locked in a decaying Louisiana mansion where secrets fester and madness simmers. The film co-stars Olivia de Havilland, Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead, and—of course—Victor Buono in a pivotal role. Mike White is joined by Tim Madigan and Otto Bruno to dig into the history, the production troubles, and the legacy of one of the juiciest entries in the “Psycho-Biddy” cycle.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

We're kicking off a month devoted to the inimitable presence of Victor Buono — though in our opening pick, “starring” might be generous. Let's say “featuring,” and featuring with impact. Robert Aldrich's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) stands as the grand dame of “Hagsploitation” — or “Psycho Biddy,” if you prefer — with Joan Crawford and Bette Davis locked in a barbed-wire sister act as Blanche and Baby Jane Hudson. Mike White is joined by authors Otto Bruno and Tim Madigan to unpack the film's camp, cruelty, and craft.Plus, actor Dominic Burgess — who portrayed Buono in Ryan Murphy's Feud — drops in to talk about stepping into the oversized shoes of this unforgettable supporting player.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

For our Universal 1931 Studios Year by Year episode we took in a Sidney Fox double feature, Bad Sister (adapted from a Booth Tarkington novel, with an early role for Bette Davis as the good sister) and Strictly Dishonorable (adapted from Preston Sturges' only successful play and directed by John Stahl). Laemmle Jr.'s protegée uses her ingenue quality to good effect whether she's playing an unsympathetic Alice Adams or a complex early Sturges heroine, and in fact we argue that the latter performance is something of a tour de force, leading us to lament the brevity of her career. Lewis Stone and Paul Lukas also impress in Strictly Dishonorable, while George Meeker gives a game performance as an Ugly WASP American at home. Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s: BAD SISITER [dir. Judy Holliday unexpectedly won the 1950 Best Actress Oscar instead of Bette Davis in All About Eve and Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd, but the Judes IS outstandingly funny in Born Yesterday. George Cukor's classic comedy actually gets funnier as it goes along, as the likable ditz Holliday grows curious about history, politics, word origins...and bettering herself. Broderick Crawford plays her uncouth, corrupt, long-time boyfriend who's in Washington to buy himself his very own politician while William Holden is the journalist paid to teach Holliday things she didn't know. And fun ensues. "MARK STEVENS: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" The name MARK STEVENS probably doesn't ring a bell with moviegoers today. However, he's one of those actors who once you see him on screen, you say, “Oh, yeah, THAT guy!” Still, at one time, he was a very in-demand leading man who was always compelling and had a tough-guy likability that brightened up many a hum-drum movie. He may not have reached the upper echelon of fame like contemporaries ALAN LADD or DANA ANDREWS, but he certainly left his mark — particularly in “The Dark Corner” with a pre-TV LUCILLE BALL. Like CHARLES LAUGHTON, DICK POWELL, and IDA LUPINO, he also became a pioneer of the actor-turned-director. Today, we take a look at his long and varied career and celebrate him as our Star of the Month. This episode was originally released on January 6, 2015. Listen to help prep for the next episode of our new season, The Old Man is Still Alive. This is the story of how Bette Davis evolved from a wannabe starlet who was constantly told she was too ugly for movies, to the most powerful woman in Hollywood, by playing heroines that had never been seen on screen before — to borrow a term from Davis herself, sympathetic “bitches.” After Pearl Harbor, the tenacious Bette became the figurehead of the Hollywood Canteen, a nightclub for servicemen staffed by stars, which was the locus of the industry's most visible support of the troops on the home front. The Hollywood Canteen was a catalyst for propaganda in more ways than one, aims Hollywood furthered by telling the story of the Hollywood Canteen in a movie called, um, Hollywood Canteen, starring Davis, John Garfield, Barbara Stanwyck, Peter Lorre and other celebrities as “themselves.” The movie and most press accounts of the Canteen portray it as a miraculous force for good in the world, which it probably was, but that narrative leaves out a lot, including illicit affairs, a murder, and an FBI investigation whose findings would have an impact on the blacklist of the following decade To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
