Throwback episode -- originally recorded for GlobeScreen in 2023: Dante Spinotti is both a member of the ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) and the AIC (Association of Italian Cinematographers). In a recent conversation from LA, he spoke to us about his distinguished career as a cinematographer. He recalled how Dino Di Laurentiis helped start his career in the US on Michael Mann's 1986 film ‘Manhunter'. Later in the discussion he shared many on-set stories working with Mann on four additional films 1992's Last of the Mohicans, 1995's Heat, 1999's The Insider and 2009's Public Enemies. DNA Genetics: Unique Strains for Hash, Amsterdam Beginnings, Legacy PartnershipWhen we say that today's guests are responsible for some of the biggest strains in the history of the plant, it's almost an understatement. We all grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s hearing about the cultural boom in Amsterdam, but these guys were living it.Blackleaf is blessed in the FSOTD studio by none other than Don and Aaron aka DNA Genetics, basically your OG's OGs, to discuss their migration to Amsterdam, running with legends like Sam the Skunkman and Dave Crockett, how they began breeding seeds in the early 2000s, coming back to the US, and the natural evolution of DNA Genetics that's turned them into a global brand with more hall-of-fame hitters than you can count. For the uninitiated, DNA Genetics is a renowned breeding company founded in Amsterdam in 2004, known for creating some of the industry's most iconic and award-winning strains. Some of these legendary strains include LA Confidential, Kosher Kush, and Tangie. DNA Genetics continues to innovate and expand with a strong global reputation, influencing the market through collaborations, seed distribution, and cutting-edge breeding techniques. You'll get to hear Don and Aaron dive deep into their ex-pat lives in Amsterdam and how they got their first building locked down, immediately started blowing massive tree, and had the cops bust down their doors on day 1. They soon partnered with a local coffee shop to grow and slang their creations, eventually having locals come in asking for seeds based on fire herb they blew just down the street. If you've ever heard of the “good old days” these were definitely them. You seriously can't count the number of unbelievable stories that are contained in this pod. Some of the other crazy tidbits that pop up during this episode include the DNA Genetics x Crockett Family Farms origin story and creating Tangie, how B-Real named the 24k strain, the LA Confidential story, how the Chocolope strain got its name on accident, growing seeds from Shantibaba himself, and how they got Barrington Levy to play an unforgettable High Times party in Amsterdam back in the day.Don and Aaron are undeniably living legends in the industry that continue to partner, expand, and take over the world with their renowned genetics. Look out for their upcoming releases with Sensi Seeds through their Breeding Grounds project, a global collaborative breeding project, the likes of which include Sherbinskis, Serge, Humboldt Seed Co., and more.Subscribe to our channel and the FSOTD.com site to keep up with other key players and enjoy conversations with trailblazers from the culture you can't find anywhere else. ove LA Magazine? I don't miss an issue. How about Orange Coast, Pasadena, and SoCal Magazines for those folks living there? Well, the brains behind all of them is President and Publisher Christopher Gialanella, and I'm thrilled to welcome him to our shows today. Chris is from Livingston, New Jersey, and when I found that out, the two of us couldn't stop chatting about it because I went to the Livingston Mall all the time as a kid, shopping at Spencer's and all kinds of stores we both loved. After working in PR in New York, Chris made his way to LA, and quickly rose within the ranks of publishing, working for Modern Luxury and LA Confidential. And who doesn't get these magazines in their mailboxes, oohing and aahing at the gorgeous home and fashion spreads on the inside. Well, that's Chris' vision, too. And these days, we can't go anywhere without seeing Chris on the red carpet, including at the Oscars this year, and just about anywhere that's relevant in SoCal, you'll find Chris front and center. And he's a master at branding, too. We'll talk about that. We will also talk about the future of magazines and how they're pivoting to online, like most things. And it's profitable. Also, Chris is of ITALIAN descent, and we will discuss the Italian influences in his early life and today. Please join my #DeborahKobyltLIVE, #LittleItalyPodcast and #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast on all video and audio platforms, and please invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to welcome you here. @christophergia @lamag @orangecoastmag @pasadenamag

Twenty-five years ago, director Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) followed up his widely acclaimed crime drama classic LA Confidential with this quirky adaptation of the Michael Chabon novel of the same name. This tells the simple story of Professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) who wrote ONE great novel several years and is having.....some difficulties....writing the follow-up. Beyond that, he has one headmaster's wife (Frances McDormand) who he's been having an affair with, a highly impressionable much younger student (Katie Holmes) who is enamored with him, a nebbishy editor/publisher (Robert Downey Jr.) who keeps hounding him for that next book, and.....a wayward student James Leer (Tobey Maguire) whom he gets mixed up with in some incident involving a dog that gets shot. James Leer also looks up to Grady and also just might be The Next Great American Writer. And there's more plot and several more characters to boot....plot is almost incidental as this Pittsburgh-set character comedy has more to it than plot. How about interesting characters, comical situations, and loads of fun dialogue to boot!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Because everybody wants both Hollywood money and acclaim. We bring you Street Kings[2008]. It stars Keanu as a cop who drinks and is depressed. Film lovers have long heard of the legendary names that built Hollywood into a global entertainment empire - Goldwyn, Mankiewicz, Laemmle, Mayer, Loews. But it was The Schenck Brothers, a ruthless pair of Bowery boys, who worked their way up to launch the Hollywood studio system, creating a lasting legacy of 'star maker machinery" while simultaneously breaking all the business rules. MOGULS: The Lives and Times of Film Pioneers Nicholas and Joseph Schenck (Sept. 24, 2024) is co-authored by Producers Guild of America member and film director Craig Singer, and Brooklyn-based writer Michael Benson (Gangsters vs. Nazis). MOGULS is a noirish, incredible Hollywood history. The Schenck brothers held controlling interests in three major studios: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Twentieth Century-Fox, and United Artists (UA). But chances are you've never heard of them because they preferred to run their global empire behind closed doors. Nick was Louis B. Mayer's boss. Think Mank meets Chinatown and LA Confidential, with a heaping dose of Hail, Caesar! and The Godfather II (of course). Twice as powerful as the Warner Brothers, the Schencks were immigrants who quietly ran Hollywood out of the spotlight, bringing film into a world of blazing color. They were as American as jazz and baseball, as flashy as Gatsby, as cunning as gangsters, who controlled a third of the motion picture industry at their height - and were some of the richest men in America.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
Audra and Raymond are back from an unintentional sabbatical to discuss Neo Noir films from the 1990s. Not to be confused with “Erotic Thrillers,” Neo Noirs echo the first wave of Film Noir in both content and style. Certain American crime thrillers of the ‘40s and ‘50s were dubbed Film Noir by French critics for their similarities: dark subject matter (usually crime mixed with fateful romance), anti-heroes with confused morals, and stylistic use of shadows and low-key lighting. These were often B-movies and almost certainly featured a Femme Fatale to lure the hero down a dark moral alley. Her appeal and danger stemmed from her empowerment. Neo Noir films are intentionally made in this model, dating 1960s to nowsville. In the period of 1989 to early 2001, Neo Noirs surged, paying homage to the classics yet everything was more extreme: explicit sex and violence, and new moral dilemmas with a heightened focus on urban decay and consumerism. Join us as we discuss Michael Man's HEAT (1995), the Wachowskis' BOUND (1996), and Curtis Hanson's L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (1997). Note: we recorded this a couple of months ago. Since then, Audra's wrist has healed and she's had time to fall down the James Ellroy rabbit hole.
Payback was something of a surprise - and largely forgotten - minor hit, riding mostly on the coattails of Mel Gibson at the height of his popularity and box office appeal, having come off a string of hits, including 1994's Maverick, 1995's Oscar-winning Braveheart, 1996's Ransom, and 1997's Conspiracy Theory, as well as the prestige of Brian Helgeland, who had just won an avalanche awards, including the Oscar, for writing LA Confidential as well as the aforementioned Conspiracy Theory. But the production of Payback also opened a window to some of the personal and professional issues surrounding Gibson that would become increasingly apparent in the years leading up to his career crash in the mid-2000s. Unhappy with the direction of the film Helgeland wrote and director, Gibson had Helgeland fired and reworked and reshot much of the movie, adding Kristofferson's character to the story and changing much of the tone and arc of the main character Porter. As a result, Payback is actually two movies - the theatrically-released Gibson vision released in 1999 and the Helgeland cut, released on Blu-ray 7 years later, officially titled Payback: Straight Up. We had writer and Payback superfan Jim Woods on to talk about both! You can find out everything you need to know about Jim on his website: Jim Woods Writes

Love Me Fierce In Danger: The Life of James Ellroy (Bloomsbury, 2023) is the story of James Ellroy, one of the most provocative and singular figures in American literature. The so-called “Demon Dog of Crime Fiction,” Ellroy enjoys a celebrity status and notoriety that few authors can match. However, traumas from the past have shadowed his literary success. When Ellroy was ten years old, his mother was brutally murdered. The crime went unsolved, and her death marked the start of a long and turbulent road for Ellroy that has included struggles with alcoholism, drug addiction, homelessness, and jail time. In tracing his life and career, Steven Powell reveals how Ellroy's upbringing in LA, always on the periphery of Hollywood, had a profound and dark influence on his work as a novelist. Using new sources, Powell also uncovers Ellroy's family secrets, including the mysterious first marriage of his mother Jean Ellroy, eighteen years before her murder. At its heart, Love Me Fierce in Danger is the story of how Ellroy overcame his demons to become the bestselling and celebrated author of such classics as The Black Dahlia and LA Confidential. Informed by interviews with friends, family, peers, and literary and Hollywood collaborators, as well as extensive conversations with Ellroy himself, Love Me Fierce In Danger pulls back the curtain on an enigmatic figure who has courted acclaim and controversy with equal zealotry. Steven Powell is an Honorary Fellow in the English Department at the University of Liverpool, UK. He is the editor of Conversations with James Ellroy (2012) and 100 American Crime Writers (2012). His most recent work is James Ellroy: Demon Dog of Crime Fiction (2016). Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. The author of Creating Flannery O'Connor: Her Critics, Her Publishers, Her Readers, he teaches research and writing at Rutgers and co-hosts the podcast Fifteen-Minute Film Fanatics, found here on the New Books Network and on X. A riveting tell-all biography that delves into the extraordinary life of Hollywood's most infamous private detective and "fixer" to the stars, revealing newly discovered shocking revelations from his never-before-seen investigative files. "The Fixer is a fascinating read that is almost like looking in someone's medicine cabinet-you know you're not supposed to but curiosity gets the better of you."-New York Journal of Books "This thrilling biography, based on personal archives and investigation files, tells not only the story of Fred Otash and how he became the most powerful man in Hollywood's shadows, but also charts the beginning of a celebrity culture still raging today." - Town and Country During the height of Hollywood's golden age, one man lorded over the city's lurid underbelly of forbidden sin and celebrity scandal like no other: Fred Otash. An ex-Marine turned L.A.P.D. vice cop, Otash became the most sought-after private detective and fixer to the stars by specializing in the dark arts that would soon dominate the entertainment industry. Otash was notorious for bugging the homes, offices, and playpens of movie stars, kingmakers, and powerful politicians, employing then state-of-the-art methods of electronic surveillance and wiretapping for a who's who list of clients for whom he'd do "anything short of murder." He lied to federal authorities to protect Frank Sinatra from criminal liability; recorded Rock Hudson's coming out confession to his estranged wife; moved in with Judy Garland to help her get sober; taped President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy's tragic love affairs with the greatest sex symbol of all time, and he listened to Marilyn Monroe die. Based on Otash's never-before-seen investigative files and personal archives, THE FIXER takes readers inside the sensational and nefarious world of the man whose art imitating life inspired the private eye characters portrayed by Jack Nicholson in Chinatown and Russell Crowe in LA Confidential.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Look out, the Holodeck's malfunctioning and we're all trapped inside! And the safety protocols have been disabled! And the holograms are self aware! Today we're looking at the Holodeck in three different shows and all the horrors it can cause. First up is The Big Sleep, which introduces Picard as the private dick, Dixon Hill and his entourage can't stop touching things. We also both attempt to re-create Picard's epic speech from the end of the episode. Then we've got Kobayashi, where Dal tries to get through a Holodeck Kobayashi Maru with some of the best people in Starfleet (and Odo who's not technically part of Starfleet). Finally, Bashir and a very sassy Garak play at spies in Our Man Bashir, facing death traps and their comrades who think they're characters in a campy spy film! We also get into some musical acts who gave us psychic damage, a nemesis of the pod and use this as an excuse to talk about a rare musical track that's featured in an episode. 00:09:54 TNG: The Big Sleep 00:40:29 Prodigy: Kobayashi 01:03:12 DS9: Our Man Bashir Talking points include: Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, Arnold Judas Rimmer, Dune (1984), Dune (the SyFy movie), Sting's movie career, Lil Gator, the Pokemon Fuecoco, Dead Ringers, The Maltese Falcon, Miles' patronising clapping, Charlie's egg-shaped head, the facial hair of all the different Poirots, D&D novels, Macross, Reboot, Ba Weep Granna Weep Ninny Bong, LA Confidential, Blob Detective, Red Harvest, Brad Dourif, Thunderstruck, Rock Band, Maximum Overdrive, Star Wars: Rebels, Pandemic, Will Self & Gareth Gates' musical career, Explaining The Wombles & Britpop to Americans, James Bond movies, The Man from UNCLE, Alien, LeCarre, GoldenEye. In this bonus episode, we take a look at the 1950's clothing in L.A Confidential. With Exley's version of Ivy, Vincennes's hollywood-esque style, and Bud White's almost militaristic brown tones, this film is an excellent example of both character-based dresing and accurate period styling. It's also a fantastic noir (which we should make more of today)!
