Today, Matt and Todd take aim at a film that needs no introduction... but we're giving it one anyway. The Wild Bunch (1969) is a brutal, operatic action-western from the legendary Sam Peckinpah, featuring a powerhouse cast led by William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Jaime Sánchez, Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, and Robert Ryan. The Old West is dying, and Pike Bishop (Holden), a hardened outlaw, rallies his gang for one last big score: robbing a railway gold shipment. When the plan goes south, they're relentlessly pursued by former comrade-turned-bounty hunter Deke Thornton (Ryan). What follows is a violent, visceral masterpiece that grapples with fading codes of honor among men with a bent understanding of it.If you've never seen this film, it earns our highest and easiest recommendation. Whether you're a long-time fan of “horse operas” or just discovering the grit and grandeur of classic Westerns, The Wild Bunch is essential viewing. We think it would appeal to any action fan of all ages.Matt reviews and ranks more movies including newer ones at LetterboxdYou can find out what he's following on Bluesky @MovieMattSirois.bsky.socialCheck out favorites of what we follow, at: Once Upon a Geek and  The Fade Out Podcast As Marcus he reviews all sorts of films but unlike here, they often they range from bad, worse, or terrible at the MovieAsylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.

from tardi wiki   was the eighth and final episode of Series 15 of Doctor Who. It premiered on 31 May 2025. The story featured the return of Omega in an active role as an antagonist for the first time since the Fifth Doctor story Arc of Infinity [+], now voiced by Nicholas Briggs, with this story revealing Omega's time spent trapped in the Under-Universe had physically altered and deformed him into a monstrous corpse like being. The story also shows the apparent fate of the bi-generated Rani at Omega's hands, while the Mrs Flood incarnation of the Rani escapes shortly after witnessing her successor's apparent demise. The Rani reveals how she survived the Spy Master's genocide of Gallifrey, and that the genetic explosion caused by the Spy Master had rendered any surviving Time Lords and Time Ladies completely sterile, which was why she enacted her plan to find Omega in order to save their race, though with the purpose of creating a new Gallifrey she could rule over. In addition, her ability to follow the Doctor throughout time and space is revealed to be accomplished by use of a Time Ring rather than a TARDIS. Steph de Whalley also returns as Anita Benn, where it's revealed she began working in the Time Hotel after Joy to the World [+] and had been looking for the Fifteenth Doctor, in doing so archive footage from The Wedding of River Song [+] and Day of the Daleks [+] respectfully would be used to have Anita see the Eleventh and Third Doctors when visiting the events of those stories, before archive footage of Rogue [+] is used when Anita finds an early version of the Fifteenth Doctor during the events of that story. Before departing, Anita would mention "the Boss" who was previously mentioned by Beep the Meep in The Star Beast [+]. In addition to the Doctor's previous incarnations appearing through archive footage, Jodie Whittaker makes a surprise appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor near the end of this story, marking her first appearance since The Power of the Doctor [+]. Most notably, this story was the final chronological appearance of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, with the story ending with his regeneration, caused by him sacrificing his current incarnation in order to bring Poppy back into existence, the Doctor's regeneration in this story was also the first time since The Parting of the Ways [+] in 2005 that the Doctor had regenerated at the end of the current series; in the revived run of the series, starting from The End of Time [+] up to The Giggle [+], the Doctor would be seen regenerating in either Christmas or New Year's specials set in between numbered series. In a twist however, The Reality War and the Fifteenth Doctor's regeneration would end with Billie Piper, having previously portrayed Ninth and Tenth Doctor companion Rose Tyler, being introduced in the final moments of the story, and with her role being left uncredited. The Doctor - Ncuti Gatwa The Doctor - Jodie Whittaker Belinda Chandra - Varada Sethu Ruby Sunday - Millie Gibson The Rani - Archie Panjabi Mrs Flood - Anita Dobson Anita Benn - Steph de Whalley Winnie Petheridge - Sam Lawton Shirley Bingham - Ruth Madeley Carla Sunday - Michelle Greenidge Conrad Clark - Jonah Hauer-King Poppy - Sienna-Robyn Mavanga-Phipps Kate Stewart - Jemma Redgrave Susan Triad - Susan Twist Christofer Ibrahim - Alexander Devrient The Vlinx - Aidan Cook Rose Noble - Yasmin Finney Melanie Bush - Bonnie Langford Cherry Sunday - Angela Wynter Voice of Omega / The Vlinx / Dalek - Nicholas Briggs Lakshmi Chandra - Nila Aalia And introducing Billie Piper Uncredited First Doctor - William Hartnell (archive footage) Second Doctor - Patrick Troughton (archive footage) Fourth Doctor - Tom Baker (archive footage) Fifth Doctor - Peter Davison (archive footage) Sixth Doctor - Colin Baker (archive footage) Seventh Doctor - Sylvester McCoy (archive footage) Guardian of the Edge - Paul McGann (archive footage) War Doctor - John Hurt (archive footage) Ninth Doctor - Christopher Eccleston (archive footage) Tenth Doctor / Fourteenth Doctor - David Tennant (archive footage) Twelfth Doctor - Peter Capaldi (archive footage) Fugitive Doctor - Jo Martin (archive footage) Crew To be added... Worldbuilding Omega and the Rani The Doctor reveals that Omega is viewed as the Original Sin of the Time Lords who has discovered time travel. He was cast out from Gallifrey because he was insane. Omega has two hearts like all Time Lords. The Underverse is a world of legends, causing Omega to change into the Mad God Titan and become his own legend. After his escape, Omega wanted to become the God of Time and feast upon Time Lords. He also immediately recognises the Doctor. The Rani has her own Time Ring and Sonic Screwdriver. The Mrs. Flood Rani later escapes with the Time Ring. UNIT Susan Triad has build her own Zero Room at UNIT floor minus 10 to use as an escape pod. UNIT can also fight using Parallax Cannons. There are a few glitches in the new world: the border between Norway and Sweden has moved seven miles east. The colour teal is more blue and actor Ernest Borgnine is still alive. Belinda and her family Belinda mentions she has an uncle named Roo living in Kerala. Her mother's name is Lakshmi. She plays a concert in Manchester. Belinda wanted to see the planet Neptune and the Big Bang before departing from the Doctor. Belinda makes the Doctor an uncle to Poppy. She reveals she met Poppy's real father when she was 21 and is named Ritchie Akingbola, though they are separated. Ruby and her family Ruby mentions that during their time together, Conrad never revealed who his father is. Cherry reveals that she likes to play poker and that Joseph is the name of her late husband. The Doctor and the TARDIS The Fifteenth Doctor mentions he can turn the TARDIS into anything. The Doctor has never been to Kerala. He also reveals that in the year 60,000, there is a planet called New New Delhi. The Fifteenth Doctor can punch regeneration energy from his hands into the Time Vortex to alter reality. However this causes him to regenerate. He can still stall the regeneration itself for a short time. The Thirteenth Doctor is unaware of what bi-generation is. The Thirteenth Doctor mentions the TARDIS having "a third strand of phenotype markers that can turn a micro-spasm". Both Doctors hope that they will always wish they had more time before regenerating. The TARDIS remembers the Fugitive Doctor, revealing her on the TARDIS console screen between the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors. The Fifteenth Doctor is surprised to see the Thirteenth, joking that "normally the other guy shows up". References The Doctor gives The Upside Down from Stranger Things and Narnia as examples about the world hidden below, or "the Underverse". Notes Jodie Whittaker revealed that one of her regrets from her tenure was that she didn't get to interact with Peter Capaldi or David Tennant during the regeneration handovers, as their scenes were filmed separately. So getting to interact with Ncuti Gatwa during his own regeneration handover was special and a highlight of coming back for her cameo. A promotional image of the Doctor and Belinda dancing with a "Happy May Day" banner in the background was released for the episode, but no such scene exists in the final episode. Jodie Whittaker wore a wig for her cameo, as she had long brown hair at the time. Russell T Davies revealed that Jodie Whittaker's codename onset was "Petrol", because he might use it as a companion name in the future. This two-parter formed Block Five of Series 15.

Welcome back, custmers! I recently took a vacation from the video store to go on a cruise with my wife. I've had cruises on the brain ever since, so what better time to recommend some of my favorite films that take place on ships! OVERBOARD (1987)Handyman and single-father Dean Proffitt sees an opportunity to get even with a pompous heiress named Joanna after an accident leaves her with amnesia. Dean takes advantage of the woman's lack of memory and convinces her that she is his wife and the mother of his four children. What starts out as a simple bit of revenge gets complicated as relationships are formed… and broken. Starring real life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Dean and Annie, with appearances from Edward Herrmann, Roddy McDowall, and Mike Hagerty. CABIN BOY (1994)In this utterly bizarre comedy starring Chris Elliott, Nathan Mayweather is a spoiled and tone-deaf “fancy lad” who accidentally boards the wrong ship and finds himself sailing the seas with a grizzled crew of career fishermen. The plot is silly, the jokes are weird, and the comedy is abstract. One moment cabin boy Mayweather is talking to imaginary cupcakes and in the next, he's being rescued from the depths of the ocean by Choki — half-man, half-shark. Cabin Boy was such a box office failure that director Adan Resnick literally never directed another film. I love this movie and my wife will get in her car and leave the house when I watch it. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's for you.THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972)If you've ever wondered what's the worst that could happen while sailing on a cruise ship, you'll soon find out. Due to a series of unfortunate events, the unstable ship is knocked over by a 90-foot-tall wave. Passengers must work together to find a way out of the upside-down cruise ship before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. This multi-Academy Award winner features an all-star cast including Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and more. CITY HUNTER (1993)Jackie Chan is known for his wacky action flicks, and this may be the wackiest of them all. In City Hunter, Chan plays Ryu, a private detective hired to find a missing woman. Ryu and his assistant Kaori track the woman to a cruise ship and follow her there, only to discover the ship is being hijacked by terrorists. Ryu is the ultimate ladies man — they love him and he loves them. City Hunter is part comedy and part action. It's like if they remade Porky's and added machine gun wielding terrorists who constantly mow down passengers in cold blood. Is this film for everybody? No. But is it for anybody? Also, maybe not. Jackie Chan said City Hunter is the least favorite film he ever worked on, which made me pick up a copy and add it to the video store's library.Usually when my wife and I go on cruises the only thing I worry about is them running out of pudding or margaritas. After watching these I'll be keeping an eye out for terrorists, gigantic waves, and terrorists. If any of those things happen I'll cross my fingers and hope for amnesia. Spectacle. That's what old Hollywood was known for. And the 1972 film THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE was one of those big budget spectaculars with a huge superstar ensemble cast. When disaster movies were “fab” and this one definitely stood out as one of the best. The last voyage of the wonderful cruise ship the Poseidon sets sail between New York City and Athens. After, it will be retired and decommissioned. While during the last leg of the cruise in the Aegean Sea, it is New Year's Eve and many of the paying customers are having fun. However, an earthquake underwater creates a tsunami and the ship is in great peril. The movie's stars include Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, and Stella Stevens among many more. The film was directed by Ronald Neame and based on the novel by Paul Gallico. Getting fine reviews and making tons of money, the movie was a huge hit. There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? When John J. Macreedy (Spencer Tracy), a stoic, one-armed stranger, arrives in a remote desert town, his quiet inquiries about a man named Komoko rattle the fragile veneer of its close-knit community. Suspicion and hostility mount as the town's residents, led by the menacing Reno Smith (Robert Ryan), close ranks to protect a dark secret buried beneath the dusty, desolate landscape.Guest:Kieran BHost and Creator of the Best Picture Cast; @bestpicturecast on X, IG, Letterboxd - BPC, Letterboxd - PersonalPrevious Episodes: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1957), Lost in Translation (2003), Gran Torino (2008), Stalag 17 (1953), Shane (1953), A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) Revisit, 12 Angry Men (1957) Revisit, The Shawshank Redemption (1994) Revisit, Saw (2004), Up in the Air (2009)Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Kieran02:35 Cast and Recognition for Bad Day at Black Rock04:15 Relationship(s) with Bad Day at Black Rock10:09 What is Bad Day at Black Rock About?14:14 Is Historial Context Needed to Appreciate the Film?22:04 Plot Summary for Bad...

The impact of The Dirty Dozen on the decade cannot be overstated – here was a big-budget, Hollywood star-powered blockbuster, about a popular topic, that simply didn't hold back. Toss on the fact that there was no rating system at the time, it's very likely Little Timmy didn't know what he was getting into when he decided to go see that new World War II movie. With a few well placed curse words and a few dozen dead Nazis, director Robert Aldrich ushered a whole new era of screen violence into the American consciousness. In this episode, Bart and Jenna discuss the legacy of The Dirty Dozen by going straight to the immediate rip-offs that followed in its wake. There's at least two surprisingly underseen gems in the bunch, as well as one other massive hit, all of which bring up the body count even as some question their own morality. Finally, some war movies even Bart can enjoy! The following films are discussed:• The Dirty Dozen (1967) Directed by Robert Aldrich Starring Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson• Dark of the Sun (1968) Directed by Jack Cardiff Starring Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux, Jim Brown• The Devil's Brigade (1968) Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen Starring William Holden, Cliff Robertson, Vince Edwards• Play Dirty (1969) Directed by André De Toth Starring Michael Caine, Nigel Davenport, Nigel Green• The Wild Bunch (1969) Directed by Sam Peckinpah Starring William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan• Battle of the Commandos (1969) La legione dei dannati Directed by Umberto Lenzi Starring Jack Palance, Thomas Hunter, Curd Jurgens

Three time Ms. Noir City Audra Wolfmann joins us once again to look at some of the strangest Westerns ever produced by Hollywood. Both of these films have surprisingly feminist themes while being directed by two of the studio system's true iconoclasts. First, Joan Crawford as saloon keeper Vienna is pitted against Mercedes McCambridge as the sexually-frustrated matriarch Emma Small in JOHNNY GUITAR (1954) for control of an Arizona town, and its two most eligible bachelors: The Dancin' Kid (Scott Brady) and Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden). Vienna has had both of them, which Emma has had none, but Emma appears to be more attracted to her feminine rival judging by the intensity of her rages whenever she's around Vienna. Directed by Nicholas Ray, whose best-known film, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955), also concerns a love triangle that doesn't conform to the gender norms of the time. Also starring Ernest Borgnine, Ward Bond, and John Carradine, and filmed in striking Trucolor by Henry A. Stradling (Hitchcock's SUSPICION; A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE). Next, Barbara Stanwyck is the "high ridin' woman with a whip in director Sam Fuller's utterly bizarre FORTY GUNS (1957), a movie as obsessed with dicks as its title would suggest. Three very Earp like brothers played by Barry Sullivan, Gene Barry, and Robert Dix (they couldn't find another Barry?) ride into Cochise County, Arizona and are immediately confronted by the movie's titular 40 guns. Stanwyck is Jessica Drummond, who rules the territory with lead and leather. Incredible camera work here by Fuller and cinematographer Joseph F. Biroc (THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN). We discussed Fuller previously way back in our Dark AF episode (S1E7) with THE NAKED KISS (1964). FORTY GUNS also stars Dean Jagger, Elvis' milquetoast dad from KING CREOLE (S2E10), as the milquetoast sheriff. We also ask all the hard questions like why Lady Gaga doesn't want to call the musical JOKER sequel a musical? The answer may surprise you. And please give us good reviews on Apple Podcasts. We could use em. Please check out Audra's amazing podcasts: SPEAKEASILY VS. Send us a textTHE DIRTY DOZENSeason 13's 4x4 marches on with the most ill-mannered, ill-disciplined hosts that it's ever been you're your displeasure to meet, sergeant. That's right, the dirtiest voices in the TGTPTU's army are getting filthier covering Robert Aldrich's THE DIRTY DOZEN (1967). It's a story of twelve convicted army men, who don't bath, until they do and the man chosen to whip them into shape: Corporal Lee Marvin fresh off an Oscar win in the role of Major Lee Marvin a.k.a. Major Alcohol a.k.a Major John Reisman. Their mission: to kill Nazi officers, women, and, if you got them, children and cute puppy German Shepherds too.  The WWII picture was immensely successful for Aldrich. Wade through episode commentary and takes about the movie's plot structure and whether this is secretly a sports movie and how Aldrich recast around actors who were leaving the film and declining scenes to get to a teaser at the end of the episode for a further discussion of Aldrich Studios, the endeavor this film allowed Robert Aldrich financially when he sold his stake in The Dirty Dozen for an endeavor that will run (and run into the ground, spoiler!) in the interval between, and be cause for, next week's film, The Longest Yard. And then wait a week for more information. (Or use the internet, ya geek. Or get a book from your local library {shout out}!)  For those familiar with the bit, famously Francophobic Jack takes exception to the line “free the French, kill the Germans.” Meanwhile, the boys snicker and make references to Ernest Borgnine's secret to eternal youth (available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I_PeLNzxNQ). And for major stans of the cast, Ken pulls back the curtain to reveal the pre-record ritual rhyme the hosts chant as a mnemonic to execute a perfect show.  And where is Donald Duck?THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Oh, you've never heard of it? Of course you haven't! This film has got all you desire though like a ONE-HOUR scene where characters just explain the Genesis Code (the theory), an evil academic advisor tells people to cool it with all the God talk if they wanna make it in the world and big-name actors? Have you ever been in the shower and found yourself wondering, what DID William Shatner do in the 1970s? Well listeners, we're here for you.A former priest who had a crisis of faith (Shatner), is among a small group aboard a plane trapped in mid-air over the Atlantic, terrorized by unexpected demonic passengers, in the made-for-television movie The Horror at 37,000 Feet (1973). A traumatic childhood incident leads Matt Stone (Shatner) to a life as a gigolo conman, with a taste for stylish threads, wealthy women, and murder in Impulse (1974)! A man devoted to protecting his family and breaking them free of a devilish curse (Shatner), becomes a pawn of Satan, turned against his brother in The Devil's Rain (1975)! And then from there, a heroic, horseback-riding veterinarian (Shatner) attempts to stop a massive colony of tarantulas from transforming a small Arizona town into the Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)!
