We'll turn on the TV this week with three radio thrillers featuring future television stars. Before he was Bart Maverick, Jack Kelly led the frantic search for a deadly snake on a boat in "A Shipment of Mute Fate" (originally aired on CBS on January 6, 1957). Beloved TV mom June Lockhart of Lassie and Lost in Space is an actress who's had enough poor treatment at the hands of a producer in "Shooting Star" (originally aired on CBS on March 24, 1957). And Richard Anderson, who'd later give orders to the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman, plays an inexperienced cavalry officer who's too eager for action in "Command" (originally aired on CBS on September 14, 1958).

In the last 10-20 years, attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people in America have shifted due to more positive visibility and evolving cultural norms. Cynthia takes a look at two moments from 1970s television that revealed glimpses of LGBTQ+ allyship—a talk show moment and a 1974 episode of Police Woman. In 1970, June Lockhart appeared on The Virginia Graham Show and stopped the hostess in her tracks, pushing back on stereotypes and tropes common for the time. And the story of how a 54-year-old clip is available for viewing is its own testament to advocacy. LGBTQ+ scholar and media documentarian Steven Capsuto's book, Alternate Channels, helped Cynthia connect the June Lockhart dot to an episode of Police Woman.  Capsuto's book is an essential work for every media, gender, and social justice scholar. He traces television and even radio's early depiction of mostly gay characters and the absence of lesbians. His book also details the LGBTQ+ community's organization and support from straight allies that fought against distorted and ugly depictions of gay and lesbian characters in television and film for more than 75 years. The overall trend in American society has been toward greater understanding and support for LGBTQ+ people and this is, to a significant degree, the result of advocates and allies pushing for more positive and diverse characterizations in popular culture. Television largely ignored lesbians until the 1970s and even then, the characters were bitter, violent, and unstable. With just a few sentences, June Lockhart, in real life, and Angie Dickinson, as Sgt. Pepper Anderson, showed viewers the power of LGBTQ+ allyship.  STEVEN CAPSUTO Website - http://alternatechannels.net/ Alternate Channels, 20th Anniversary Revised Edition (2020) by Steven Capsuto http://alternatechannels.net/book/ MENTIONS June Lockhart, Virginia Graham, Angie Dickinson, Rev. “Arf! Arf!” “What's that, Girl? Timmy's in the well!!?” We speak fluent Collie and Timmy got into plenty of trouble but he never fell into a well. What Lassie is trying to tell you there is that “Timmy,” Jon Provost, is doing very well. He's an animal rights activist who has just launched a CBD spray to help calm pets and, along with his wife, Laurie Jacobson, he's written a book chronicling his phenomenal show-biz history, including films with Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Jane Wyman, Robert Redford, Natalie Wood, William Holden, Clinton Eastwood and Kurt Russell. Jon spent seven years working on Lassie and June Lockhart before graduating as a bona fide teen idol and exploring all of the iconic haunts along the Sunset Strip with Davy Jones, David Cassidy and Sajid Kahn! The book is, naturally, titled Timmy's In The Well and along with Jon's acting history, it also explores what happens to a family when one kid becomes world famous. Jon's wife Laurie joins us with insights into exactly that as well as intrigue on Hollywood's hidden history and a peek into her next book about The Sunset Strip. We leave no stone unturned and no well un-excavated as we trace Jon's start back to his mother's love for Jane Wyman which compelled her to bring her 3-year-old son to a cattle-call audition for the role of Sterling Hayden and Jane Wyman's little boy in 1953's So Big. Out of a sea of hundreds, Jon won the part. From there, we go behind the Lassie scenes with Jon as he warmly remembers his relationship with the world's most beloved dog and her trainer, Rudd Weatherwax. (Actually, his trainer. Lassie was always played by a male dog.) Jon and Lassie travelled the country on promotional tours and along the way, they grand marshaled parades, hosted charity events and visited children's hospital, inspiring Jon towards a lifetime of charity work and public service.Jon also reflects on his personal struggles with dyslexia, school bullies, finding himself as he came of age and how a conversation with Kurt Russell on the set of 'The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes' convinced him it was time to take a much-needed break from the business.Plus, Laurie and Jon share their “How Did You Meet” story. It happened at an autograph show where Laurie came over to his booth to chat with Stanley Livingston. Lassie having taught Jon well in the art of non-verbal communication, Jon kicked Stan under the table which is code for, “What the heck, Stan!? Introduce me to this lovely woman!”  All that plus Weezy and Fritz are recommending Hollywood Con Queen and Sugar, both on Apple TV+.Path Points of Interest:Jon ProvostTimmy's In The Well by Jon Provost & Laurie JacobsonJon Provost on WikipediaJon Provost on FacebookLaurie JacobsonLaurie Jacobson's Amazon Author PageLaurie Jacobson on InstagramProvost Pet SprayMuttvilleHollywood Con Queen on Apple +Sugar on Apple +

Dennis is joined via Zoom by one of his heroes, comedy writer Dick DeBartolo who worked for both Mad Magazine and The Match Game TV show...at the same time! Dick talks about how he landed both jobs, how they actually complimented each other and what it was like to go back and forth between the two offices in Manhattan. Recalling Match Game, Dick describes how dry the questions were when he started and how it was his idea to make the questions silly, which basically saved the show. Dennis also has lots of questions for Dick about his beloved Mad magazine, like who exactly was it for? And how did they create parodies of movies that were still in theaters without VHS tapes to refer to? And what does one of Dick's Mad magazine features look like typed on a page? Dick also talks about his personal life and recalls how he met his now-husband Dennis at the gym back in 1980...because of Mad. Other topics include: Dick's hilariously tender relationship with Mad founder Bill Gaines, Dick and Bill's secret Statue of Liberty spy adventure, Gay Sundays at Studio 54, what game show producing legends Mark Goodson and Bill Todman were like behind the scenes, why celebrities like Michael J. Fox, June Lockhart and Viggo Mortenson loved being parodied in Mad and that time Dick pretended to be Alfred E. Neuman's campaign manager when Alfred was running for president. Are you old enough to remember the 1965 television series Lost in Space? It followed the adventures of the Robinson family who are lost in their scientific exploration of outer space. June Lockhart starred as the mom. Bill Mumy played Will her young son. In the show, Will is often unaware of the trouble he stumbles into. However, he is usually protected by the expedition's robot. In one episode the robot waved his arms and cried out, “Danger!” This became the catchphrase, “Danger, Will Robinson!” It is still sometimes used today to warn people who are about to make a mistake The robot can also help us understand the word admonish, which means to caution or warn, often with instruction. Colossians 3:16 tells us, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” (NIV) As Christians, we look out for one another. We need to take the teaching of Scripture to heart so we can use it to warn others about the spiritual dangers they may not see. We need to learn the bible's wisdom so we can share it with others. That's the meaning of the passage. We teach and admonish one another.  Though, we don't need to wave our arms and cry out “Danger, Will Robinson”! Steve Caddick is playing this tune. This was recorded at the Early Spring Banjo Fling in 2003 in Mansfield, MA where I was the Headliner. This is my solo tenor banjo rendition of this old tune. It includes the verse which is seldom heard. A bit of trivia for you Boomers, this song was written by June Lockhart's father, Eugene, she played the mom on the 1950's TV show Lassie. In looking at the song style choices, there needs to be one for 4-string banjos!
