With both Franklins on assignment, cannabis comic Ngaio Bealum and Instagram movie reviewer Ajax Green (@leonard_malted) join us for an exploration of voyeurism in film. First, we've got the ultimate voyeuristic spectacle with Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece REAR WINDOW (1954), the first work from the Master of Suspense we've featured on this show, and we've only been at it for nearly three years now. What is up with that??? Jimmy Stewart J.B. "Jeff" Jeffries, a news photographer whose broken leg has left him nothing to do but stare out the back window of his Greenwich Village apartment into all the apartments of his neighbors. He gets so obsessed by the idea that one of these neighbors, Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr) murdered his wife, that Jeff won't even make out with his way-too-young fashionista girlfriend, Lisa Fremont (Grade Kelly), vexing Ajax to no end. Fortunately for Jeff and Lisa's relationship, she cannot resist the pull of true crime, and soon becomes just as obsessed with her man's suspicions as he is. With immaculate wardrobe by Edith Head and a whole New York block recreated on a Paramount soundstage. Possibly the greatest film from the greatest director. REAR WINDOW is part of Criterion Channel's "Photographer's Gaze" series. For our second feature, we go all the way to Egypt for director Youssef Chahine's CAIRO STATION (1958) where the director plays Qinawi, a handicapped newspaper vendor who becomes obsessed with Hanuma (Hind Rustum--the Marilyn Monroe of the Middle East), a voluptuous beauty who makes her living by selling cold soft drinks to thirsty travelers without a permit. After being rejected by Hanuma, Qinawi soon takes inspiration from sensationalist news stories telling of a serial killer who chops up women and leaves their remains in trunks. Reviled by Egyptian audiences and critics when it was originally released but now considered a classic, it is filmed in a neorealist style that captures the sweat and dust of the Cairo Station of its time. Also look out for a surprise rockin' musical number. CAIRO STATION is part of Criterion Channel's Youssef Chahine series. We should've titled this episode "MALE GAZE" because Bob goes into way too much detail about Grace Kelly's sex life, Ngaio talks about his love of titties in movies, and Ajax wishes these films had higher body counts. It's a good thing we're doing FEMINIST WESTERNS for our next episode. Ajax, Ngaio, Cory and Bob also discuss the MEGALOPOLIS AI critic quote debacle, and Ngaio gives us an EMERALD CUP update. You can find Ajax on Insta @leonard_malted. You can find Ngaio on X, Insta, and probably every where else at ngaio420. This is an exhibit years in the making, and in no small part comes to fruition thanks to the work guest curator Catherine Shotick. Once again, it's time for the stars to shine at the Academy Awards. Edith Head was an American costume designer who won eight Oscars for Best Costume Design. And nominated for 35 Oscars, she became the most awarded woman in the Academy's history. She is considered to be one of the greatest costume designers in movie history. She designed Grace Kelly's dress for Alfred Hitchcock's “Rear Window,” the sarong dress for Dorothy Lamour in “The Hurricane,” and she received her final Oscar for work on “The Sting” with Paul Neuman and Robert Redford. She also worked in television, designing Endora's clothing on “Bewitched.” She designed clothes for men too, including five films for John Wayne, Steve Martin in “Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid” and Elvis in “Blue Hawaii.”

She helped transform stars like Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and many more into the iconic characters they are remembered for today.  For Further Reading: “Edith Head: The Fifty-Year Career of Hollywood's Greatest Costume Designer” by Jay Jorgenson EDITH HEAD, FASHION DESIGNER FOR THE MOVIES, DIES - The New York Times Edith Head | Fishko Files | WNYC Designing Woman: Edith Head in Hollywood | National Portrait Gallery Edith Head (1978) - From the Videofashion Vault | Videofashion All month, we're talking about Trendsetters: women whose vision, style, and willingness to break barriers changed culture — from what we wear to how we behave. Marcy Weinstein has represented more sales volume and set more sales records than all other real estate agents in the history of Newport Coast in Southern California. Her clients and friends include some of the best known celebrities in the world. She's a joyful, fun, powerhouse, so much so that you would never know that she's intimately acquainted with pain. In high school, Marcy's civics teacher, convinced her to enter the Miss San Marcos pageant because it led to a seat on the city council. Marcy wanted to do what she could to improve her community, so she signed up. She won that contest and was automatically entered into the Miss California Universe pageant. Her father was in the military and her mother was a homemaker, so they didn't have money for a fancy dress. Marcy's mother had taught her to sew, so Marcy set out to make her dress from a design she created. Her very unique dress hung from her neck suspended by her grandmother's pearl necklace. One of the judges of the pageant happened to be the world famous winner of eight Academy Awards for Costume Design, Edith Head. Ms. Head approached Marcy to ask who had made her dress. When Marcy told the famous designer that she did it herself without a pattern, Ms. Head saw to it that Marcy enhanced her natural talent through an education at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. Marcy carved her niche in the garment business and then used her talent to pivot to design large luxury office projects. She traveled the world overseeing her projects, when one day there was a horrific fire that covered almost 60% of her body with 2nd and 3rd degree burns. While in the hospital still wondering if she would survive, her fiancé told her that no one would be able to take care of her or love her. Marcy's reply spoke volumes about who she is. While trying to breathe, not knowing if she'd live or be able to walk again or live a normal life, Marcy said, "Well, God and I both love me, and I see how beautiful I am, and I can take care of myself." In this episode of the FIND YOUR PURPOSE NOW podcast, Marcy Weinstein shares her best advice, the values she's passed on to her children, and a powerful thing that you can do with the people you love empower them to be themselves and to know their value. The first thing we needed to get straight is whether it's pronounced "plaid" or "plaid" and then with that debate settled we move on to discuss the 1982 Steve Martin parody of and homage to Film Noir DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID. When physicist and part time cheese enthusiast John Hay Forrest dies in a suspicious car accident, his daughter Juliet (Rachel Ward) hires private eye Rigby Reardon to investigate his death, unwittingly setting them both on a path towards cheese obsessed nazis hell bent on destroying America. Carl Reiner co-wrote and co-starred as the villanious Field Mashall Von Kluck whilst also taking up directing duties. The movie ingeniously recycles footage from classic 40's and 50's films, the vast majority of which none of us have seen, and is fittingly dedicated to its editor Edith Head who won eight Oscars for Best Costume Design over a long and influential career.

Fittingly, the day after a passably uplifting film wins Best Picture of 2021, we post a chat about The Lost Weekend. Billy Wilder was a genius at tragi-comedy, so he isn't at his best directing something like this. Still, his Oscars-sweeper remains an effective effort. Most of Wilder's legendary films were ahead in the '50s, but his Oscar-festooned 1945 "drinking'll wreck ya" drama is a vivid forerunner of desperate alcoholism. Yes, Leaving Las Vegas, Young Adult and others did it better, but this was revolutionary for its time. Ray Milland took home a trophy for Best Actor (despite the thick-laying he's doing) and Jane Wyman is underused, but the cast is still pretty authentic. So pour 1 (or 100) out to the demons and also to the saints as the 435th Ellises' Analysis concludes Oscar Month with a chat about Wilder's Weekend.   Well, Actually: Alcoholics Anonymous got its start 10 years earlier in 1935. Also, I.A.L. Diamond became Wilder's writing partner in 1957 when they co-wrote Love In The Afternoon. Also also, we've reviewed 18 movies for which Edith Head designed the costumes. Also also also, after we talk about Soul next week, we will have covered at least one movie from every year from 2021 all the way back to 1929.   It may not be true that strong java will sober you up fast, but whether you need to get over a hangover or not, buy Sparkplug Coffee. This entire conversation was almost three full hours because there was just so much to talk about. We really get a glimpse into the life of these two international siblings who lived in both England and America, spending time with both their parents after the divorce. These trips brought Daisy and James closer and made their time with both their parents all the more special. Their bond and their love for their parents shines through in every story. We also hear about how dad said goodbye to them from the Ambassadors Lounge at LAX on their transatlantic trip back to the U.K. and how he would turn down gigs in the Summertime and Christmas so he could spend time with his kids. Their mother, who made her last film in about 1967 starred in so many sci-fi classic films she actually has an annual film festival dedicated to her and how she became part of pop culture lore as she is namedropped in the song “Science Fiction/Double Feature” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And we haven't even discussed their their grandmother, iconic British actress Dame Thora Hild whose 70 year career in film and TV in England made her a household name and her passing was treated like a state funeral. It's story after story on part two of our episode with Daisy and James. Names like Eddie Fisher, David Frost, Glenn Frey, Edith Head, Buddy Rich and more are just some of the people we discuss. Wait for the Tony Randall in Tokyo story and you might have heard it all, because that one blew us away. It's next on the Rarified Heir Podcast.
