Rocking Halloween III - A What the Riff Rabbit Hole

What the Riff?!?

What The Riff?!? makes another scary trip down the Halloween rabbit hole with these theme songs, movie and TV music, and rock songs with a bent towards the macabre.  We hope you enjoy this third edition of "Halloween" from What the Riff?!? Highway to Hell by AC/DC  The opening track to the 1979 album of the same name features Bon Scott on his last album as lead singer of the group before his untimely death.  The name of the song was inspired by the group's gruesome touring schedule.Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue  The Crue's 1983 breakthrough album of the same name would establish them as one of the most successful metal bands of the 80's.  The song was controversial, with many believing that it encouraged devil worship, though the lyrics themselves do not explicitly do so.Disarm by The Smashing Pumpkins  Off their breakout album "Siamese Dream," this song references "the killer in me is the killer in you" is inspired by Billy Corgan's contemplation of his negligent parents and suicide.  The lyrics "cut that little child" caused the song to be banned by the BBC.Demons by Imagine Dragons  This song off Imagine Dragons' major label debut studio album became their second top 10 single.  It is really not about demons in the Halloween sense, but more the tragedies of life like abuse, PTSD, and mental illness.Voodoo by Godsmack  The third single from Godsmack's self-titled debut album was inspired by Wes Craven's film “The Serpent and the Rainbow.”  This song became Dave Bautista's theme song as Leviathan when he was in the WWE.  Mommy's Little Monster by Social Distortion  The title track from Social Distortion's debut album tells a horror tale of a kid becoming a punk rocker.  It is another song about dealing with personal demons rather than the supernatural. Witch Wolf by Styx  Early in their career Styx put out this song to lead off their third album, “The Serpent is Rising.”  James Young takes lead vocal duties on this song that tells about a person accursed by a creature called the witch wolf, and night rider.Dragula by Rob Zombie  The lead single from Rob Zombie's debut album may be his biggest hit.  The audio clip at the beginning of the song is taken from the 1960 horror film “The City of the Dead.”  The name comes from the TV sitcom "The Munsters," where Grandpa Munster has a dragster called "Drag-u-la."The theme to the TV series "Twilight Zone" This menagerie of bizarre tales from the early days of TV still has staying power in our sci-fi culture. Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones  Mick Jagger walks us through a discussion with Old Scratch himself in this well-known classic from the Stones' catalogue.  The idea is a narrative from Satan's point of view as he reviews historical events. That Old Black Magic by Frank Sinatra  Old Blue Eyes gave us this romantic song with a Halloween bent.  It was a jazz classic originally written in 1942 with lyrics penned by Johnny Mercer.  Love is "that old black magic" in this tune.Night of the Vampire by Roky Erickson  From this cult classic album "The Evil One," this song is one of a plethora of horror-oriented tracks on the album.  Erickson spent a significant amount of time in mental institutions. The Kill (Bury Me) by Thirty Seconds to Mars  Jared Leto, front man for the group (and perhaps better known as an actor today), has said this song is about the relationship you have with yourself, and confronting the dark side of who you are.Take Me to Church by Hozier  This haunting hit song compares falling in love with a kind of death, and compares the lover to a kind of religion. In 1948, New Orleans veteran trumpeter and singer Louis Prima stumbled into a young girl named Keely Smith. She was barely a performer at all, almost half his age, destined for a relatively quiet life; their encounter was pure coincidence. But they went on to invent “The Wildest,” the most exciting and successful lounge act Las Vegas has ever seen, an act that became one of the hottest in the U.S. in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their records were hugely popular, and they were courted by Frank Sinatra, Ed Sullivan, Robert Mitchum, and other well-known entertainers of the day. Their professional success helped bring about the rise of Las Vegas as a mecca of American entertainment. Their love story ended soon after they helped usher in John F. Kennedy's presidency–singing “That Old Black Magic” for him at his inauguration–but their influence is still evident.

So, the government really did bug Edda's bikini bottoms. And her response to that is to dangle her recently removed bikini from a window to confuse the agents of the Creepy National Furtiveness Agency (you know, the CNFA). Somehow, Edda knows to lower the bikini bottom down to the open window (she knows it's open somehow?) where two children are talking about inflatable office buildings. As if "inflatable office building" is a toy that children can buy and/or would be interested in for some reason. The children talking about "blowing up" these inflatable buildings convinces the CNFA that actual buildings are being exploded. So they arrest Amos & Edda (hooray!) only to let them go immediately (boo!). They explain that they overheard the plot on Edda's bugged bikini bottom. Edda, wearing a dress, explains that she is not in fact wearing her bikini bottom under her dress. Because that is something that needs to be clarified. Edda talking about not wearing her bikini bottom convinces the CNFA agents that she's likely not wearing underwear, I guess. So it short circuits their brains, because that's what women talking about undergarments does to men ALWAYS. Edda & Amos leave the short-circuited agents in their apartment and go to dinner. And at dinner, Edda tells Amos she's not wearing her bikini bottom and that short-circuits him too. Because men are incapable of hearing about undergarments without being paralyzed. Fun stuff! ABOUT DEBBY BOONE AND THE REISSUE OF SWING THIS Debby Boone's exuberant album, "Swing This," will be reissued on all digital streaming platforms on February 4 via Time Life. The collection of jazzy standards is inspired by her experiences as a child in Las Vegas while her father headlined at iconic venues like the Sands and the Sahara during the 1960's. "When my father, Pat Boone, headlined Vegas in the '60s, I was there with him - and even though I was just a kid, I couldn't get enough of the music or the glamour," says Boone. "This is my take on the joyful, exhilarating music I heard that inspired me to become a singer," and led her to work with some of the Rat Pack era's biggest icons, including Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis. Jr. Boone delivers her renditions of classic favorites such as "Sway," "That Old Black Magic," "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," "Everybody Loves Somebody," "Mack the Knife" and more. Exclusively on this digital release, she ends with her signature hit, "You Light Up My Life," as a bonus track. In 1977, the song was a triple crown winner, taking home an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a GRAMMY Award and became one of the biggest songs in history, hitting #1 on the Billboard chart for 10 weeks and selling more than four million copies. In 2008, "You Light Up My Life" was ranked #7 in Billboard magazine's 50th Anniversary list of All Time Hot 100 top charting songs. Boone also won a GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist and has received seven additional GRAMMY nominations and two wins since then. A multiple genre cross-over artist, Boone has enjoyed Top 10 successes on the Pop, Country, Adult Contemporary and Contemporary Christian charts. In addition to her GRAMMY success, she was named the Top New Female Vocalist in the same year by both the Academy of Country Music and the American Music Awards and has received two Dove Awards. Boone has also written six children's books and has performed in an array of musical theater productions. "Swing This" track list 1. Sway2. That Old Black Magic3. More Than You Know4. A wolf howls in the distance at the full moon that lights the path of the black cat that strolls across the lawn. Every commercial and sale is littered with references to ghouls, goblins, and all things Halloween. It's the time of the year when America celebrates things scary, and that goes bump in the night. This Sunday, in our study of the book of Acts, we come to the 8th chapter and the story of Simon the sorcerer. Acts 8:9 says, “Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria.” Once again, Satan attempts to infiltrate the church, and once again, the power of the Holy Spirit and the blood of Jesus shut him down! This story uncovers a weakness in the human heart that the enemy tries to exploit. The Book of Acts shows us the forward movement of the church and people being set free by those Jesus sent. It also shows us all the ways the enemy tries to get inside and stop the great commission. What is this weakness we all have? Come this Sunday and find out what it is and how to close the door forever on the kingdom of darkness as I preach the message “That Old Black Magic”.

Western swing was developed in the dancehalls of Texas and, in sharp contrast to old-time stringbands, western swing groups employed many more members, with horn sections and multiple fiddles. These were needed to fill these massive dance halls with music for dancing. We’ll hear classics from The Light Crust Doughboys, Milton Brown and his Musical Brownies and Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. It is with caution dear listener that I must remind you of the shadows that fill every waking moment and breath in the Outland Valleys. My contrition for sharing this knowledge is deep, for every moment of these brave and foolish adventurers lives must be riddled with at least one salient thought: Who, or what, is watching them? There is no moment of respite for those who fate takes a shine to. And in Pallas behind ruffled papers and chilly tones, a short scruffy man in an ill fitting suit over his ill fitting skin is the first observer. It’s quiet words he shares with those higher, but those words become like gold as it travels up the chain, and reaching up to the top as unto blood. But the pale haired woman at the end of the valuable words smiles a decadent smile that conveys a surplus of self confidence drowned in opulence, but bearing the features of someone all too familiar. “They certainly never stop being entertaining. I can’t wait to see her.” she says to no one despite the sycophant at her heel. She stands, a cascade of shimmering red fabric and too artful motions. “We’ll see what they can do.” And then she was gone. Special Edition: Rob Kapilow, Pre Show Interview... Smithsonian Associates Art Of Living Series, NOB For this special edition, now our second conversation with “What Makes It Great,” composer, conductor, lecturer, music expert, Rob Kapilow, I caught up with him just before he went onstage at the Baird Auditorium, where he unlocked the secrets of master songwriter  Harold Arlen.  This interview is a companion to our recent conversation with Rob, when we discussed the almost anonymous Arlen, whose vast songbook consists of more than 400 tunes such as Get Happy, Last Night When We Were Young, Stormy Weather, That Old Black Magic, and Over the Rainbow, which was voted the No. One song of the 20th century by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. The evening featured singers Michael Winther and Nikki Renee Daniels, both with steller voices, Broadway credits, and perfectly matched for the “Kapilow Versions,” of the music they sing, while Rob plays.    For more than a decade, Kapilow has brought the joys and wonder of music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds with his What Makes It Great? presentations, which dissect and examine the mysteries of music in terms everyone can grasp and appreciate. Part One is an entertaining discussion displaying Kapilow's astounding gift for observation and his animated teaching style. Part Two features performances of the composition, and audience sing-alongs.  The evening concludes with Part Three, a spirited question-and-answer on the work. We caught up with Rob to ask him a few questions, listen to a bit of pre show rehearsal music, and before the audience and it was a treat. Enjoy.

The Not Old Better Show Interview series, Rob Kapilow, What Makes It Great, Smithsonian Associates As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living series, our guest today on the Not Old Better Show is composer, performer, podcaster, radio show host, and music expert, Rob Kapilow.  Rob is well known for so many things, but his “What Makes It Great” series is perhaps a “go to” resource on music.  There's “FamilyMusick,” for kids, and Rob is well known for his “Polar Express,” “Green Eggs & Hamadeus,” and his vocal score companion, “Dr Suess' Gertrude McFuzz,” Kapilow's “Citypieces,” with communities, and places in history, including his work with the Blackfeet tribe titled, “Summer Sun, Winter Moon” are stunning.  Just a lot of brilliant work.  Rob's new ebook, "What Makes It Great, Enhanced Edition," is out now, too, and can be found HERE. Rob, along with a group accompanying him, will share music from Harold Arlen, who wrote over 500 songs, many, many well known, but Arlen himself isn't so well known.  None other than George Gershwin called him “the most original of all of us,” he won an Oscar, and had many hits, and yet he's largely unfamiliar to many of us.  Any fan of the Great American Songbook could hum a few bars of "Over the Rainbow," "Stormy Weather" or "That Old Black Magic" without having to think too hard. And yet, the composer of those songs remains little known. His songs are so alive that many major singers, including Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and even George Harrison, here singing “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.” All that changes Sunday night, October 30, when Rob Kapilow will be presenting “What Makes It Great,” (I think I counted 21 seasons of “What Makes It Great,”) in Washington DC, at the Baird Auditorium, and the program begins at 6 PM, sharp.  I'll be there.  Those who know Rob, know of his work, and know of his 21 seasons of “What Makes In Great” on NPR, agree that Rob is a born teacher, a motivational speaker, and game show host, all rolled into one,” according to the Boston Globe.  Audiences agree.  Join Rob and guests on Oct. 30, 2016, for Smithsonian Associates series, co-presented by Washington Performing Arts, and tickets are HERE. Enjoy.

Immediately they are followed by several raw-skinned demons, midgets of reptilian humanoid form, with female breasts and thrashing snake-like tails, and horns on their heads. Sparks fly out of their anuses as they fart spluttering sulfurous gases. They search unsuccessfully for Ralph and Robin and soon depart in a disorganized retreat.***The image is Luis Ricardo Faléro’s “Departure of the Witches” (1878).Music excerpt is “That Old Black Magic”from the album Cocktails for Twoby Spike Jones, vintage World War II American Big Band music...with a twist.

Anime dvd review of Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy Volume 5: "That Old Black Magic". Directed and written by Hiroaki Gohda. Published by ADV Films. Episodes 17-20, Running Time: 100 minutes, Rated 13+, List Price: 29.98. Last volume, Marller suceeded in seprating Urd into her two composite halves, demon and goddess. The two bodies were rejoined into one but there are still some imbalance problems between the two personalities. Because her soul is out of sync, one of the personalities will be lost...unless Belldandy and company can find a higher power than themselves to help Urd. They rule out asking the "Almighty", or God, because Belldandy is afraid that he will get rid of her demon side entirely. That leaves only one other entity with the required power...Hilda, the queen of Hell, and the ruler of all demonkind!  She also happens to be Urd's mother.  She and Urd don't really talk much because Urd fears her corrupting influence. Of course, Hilda would like nothing more than for Urd to give up her Goddess life and come live with her. Hilda tells Urd that she will help her in exchange for a unknown favor. Urd agrees as long as the future favor will not conflict with her role as a goddess. Hilda becomes a new character that goads on the ever ineffectual Marller to continue to get out of her depth in an effort to strike a blow for demons everywhere. Marller even sends a magical ninja to take out the goody-two-shoe band of friends. Ironically, as befits Marller's small mind, the ninja is the size of a mouse. It was cool to see Urd's mom, who seems to have been married to the Almighty at some point. Now, that's weird... the queen of Hell sleeping around with God? Does that mean that the Almighty is Urd's dad? Ah My Goddess is a series that is at its least when it tries to get too serious, for instance, when Urd or Belldandy lose control of their powers or are possessed. It is at its best when it moves the story along with lightheartedness, humor, and a mood that almost strikes one as langorous. If you've gotten this far into the second season you should know the characters pretty well so they almost seem like old friends. The show is good at adding new twists and new characters like Hilda, which keep the story fresh and funny. Highly recommended. My Grade: A The six individual volumes of this series were published by ADV Films and you can pick them up at www.Rightstuf.com for $5 each. Funimation has the license now and just came out with the box set this week. Here's the official website:  http://www.funimation.com/ahmygoddess/
