And who the hell is LUISE RAINER, and how did she rob IRENE DUNNE and BARBARA STANWYCK of their Oscars? Robert Osbourne and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Malcolm is Missing, tenacity and passionate commitment to a cause, justice and corruption, family and why sometimes pushing back against the system is necessary.TrailerWatch on CBC GemSynopsis:Malcom is Missing, from Canadian documentarians Robert Osborne and Jari Osborne, is an affecting and suspenseful portrait of a daughter who wouldn't give up, and a corruption-riddled system of justice - a country where 100,000 people go missing every year and 95% of violent crimes are never solved. In between the moments of investigative discovery, Malcom is Missing paints a picture of a strained but loving family, a man-child of a father who left Brooke's life early, but maintained a bond that compelled her to find out his fate. We see his odd collection of miniatures, including a mechanical “Curiosity Shop,” and gradually get a sense of a man who's a curious combination of guarded and suspicious yet oddly naïve and trusting. "I am always amazed and inspired by how passionate and articulate so-called “ordinary” people can be,” says co-director Jari Osborne. “Brooke is no exception. In fact, in every way, I find Brooke remarkable--as is her story. Malcom is Missing is certainly a true crime thriller. But at its heart, beats the story of a brilliant, elusive--and flawed—father, and the daughter who would rescue him and find herself profoundly changed." On April 14, 2023, four-and-a-half years after he disappeared, Malcom's killers were finally convicted in a Mexican court—Marcela, Martin and Andres each received sentences of 56 years.About Robert:Robert Osborne is the Senior Producer of Dam Builder Productions. THERE ARE NO SMALL PARTS focuses on the wonders achieved by performers in brief roles, sometimes mere cameos. To watch an actor's complete delineation of a character in a few minutes is to marvel at his/her talent, concentration, and invention. Each of the 100 performances spotlighted in the book aims to evoke not just each actor's individual impact but how he/she's imaginative gifts invigorated (and sometimes even stole) their films. From 1935 to 2019, the text surveys great artists who mastered playing for the camera, seizing moviegoers' attention and deserving places of honor for their contributions. John DiLeo's first book was AND YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW CLASSIC MOVIES (St. Martin's, 1999), hailed by Pauline Kael as "the smartest movie quiz book I've ever seen." His second book was 100 GREAT FILM PERFORMANCES YOU SHOULD REMEMBER BUT PROBABLY DON'T (Limelight Editions, 2002), which Adolph Green called "a valuable and touching work." Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne said, in the Hollywood Reporter, that the book "delightfully throws the spotlight on some remarkable film work," and the Washington Post's reaction was, "Not only is this helpful criticism, but 100 GREAT FILM PERFORMANCES can serve as balm for anyone who has ever been disgruntled by the Academy's choices on Oscar night." John has been a contributing book reviewer for the Washington Post and recently completed a four-year stint as a weekly regular on the Arlene Bynon radio show in Toronto (on SiriusXM).

For Video Edition, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/IDP5sq-Fa_I Richard Barrios received degrees in both music and film history and worked in both music and film before turning his attention to writing. His first book was the widely acclaimed A SONG IN THE DARK: THE BIRTH OF THE MUSICAL FILM, winner of the Theatre Library Association Prize and reissued in 2009 in an extensively revised second edition. Barrios’s second book, SCREENED OUT: PLAYING GAY IN HOLLYWOOD FROM EDISON TO STONEWALL, was the subject of a month-long film series on Turner Classic Movies programmed by Barrios, who also co-hosted the series with Robert Osborne. For his third book, Barrios returned to the musical genre with DANGEROUS RHYTHM: WHY MOVIE MUSICALS MATTER. This work led the Philadelphia Inquirer to comment that “Barrios knows this business inside and out, upside and down. He can turn a spiffy phrase…and even his footnotes are fun.” In 2017, he renewed his association with Turner Classic Movies for still another well-received book on musicals, the lavishly-produced MUST-SEE MUSICALS: 50 SHOW-STOPPING MOVIES WE CAN’T FORGET.  Mining studio records, scripts, drafts (including cut scenes), censor notes, reviews, and recollections of viewers, Barrios paints our fullest picture yet of how gays and lesbians were portrayed by the dream factory, warning that we shouldn't congratulate ourselves quite so much on the progress movies have made since Stonewall.   Order HERE: https://www.amazon.com/Screened-Out-Playing-Hollywood-Stonewall/dp/041592328X

(Today's edition comes with an audio edition! Listen to today's nine-minute story by clicking the play tab above.)A quick diversion from photography and my recent dive into family history today to take a minute and marvel at a news bite from this week. (There is a photo angle, but you'll need to read all the way through to get there. Bear with me!) Newsflash! Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, the two longtime Hollywood trade publications, are now corporate siblings. Wow! This is like Coke swallowing Pepsi. Or Toyota bringing Nissan into the fold. Hard to believe. The company that owns Variety snapped up THR as well. Read on and you'll see why I think this is such a huge deal. As you may or may not know, at an earlier time in my life, I was a THR reporter, at a time when Variety was king and THR was a very weak, No. 2. Competition was fierce, unlike anything I ever experienced anywhere else, at any other time. Like heart-thumping, every morning intense. Each night I would go to sleep, hoping I wouldn't be scooped in the morning. I'd wake up, and that's all I could still think about, with a pit in my stomach, on the drive into Hollywood. I'd arrive to the offices on Sunset Blvd., in-between Hollywood High and the Corners of the World building, breathing heavily, and immediately grabbing what was awaiting me, on my desk. The latest issue of Daily Variety, already marked up in red pencil. The stories that were on my beat were highlighted, and the subtext was simple: why didn't you have this too?Because Variety and THR were so competitive, the Variety reporters told their sources that if they “gave” their story to us, they wouldn't be noted in the Show-Biz Bible. And Variety played really hard. Sometimes, they gave an inch, and agreed to note the story. It would appear on the next to last page, as a two-to-four paragraph short. It was that rough. Variety, of course had the storied history that created such pieces of slang as the words “Boffo,” (for great) “Biopic,” (biography) and “Nix” (for reject.) The famous headline “Sticks Nix Hick Pix,” was immortalized in the George M. Cohan biopic, “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” THR had the Rambling Reporter (and the late Robert Osborne before he became….that Robert Osborne.)A Variety front page article, a mention in Army Archerd's column, those were the places Hollywood power wanted to be. THR was an afterthought, but one they indeed wanted as well. The two Trade papers had small circulations of around 15,000 each. But talk about influencers! Every subscriber was the ultimate influencer, from studio chiefs, to network heads, show buyers and schedulers, producers and other industry “pros” who wanted to be in the know. My phone rang every morning between 9 a.m. and 9:15 with an intensity I never would see anywhere else in my career. Ever. The feedback was amazing and instantaneous, and the screaming was at high-level decibels. My job was to get an exclusive. Or at least the same story, day and date. My competitor was a crusty reporter, now deceased, named Morrie Gelman. He was a veteran with the best Rolodex in town, or so it seemed to me. I was young and learned on the job, by going to lunch with sources every day, and attending every industry function there was. I didn't care about anyone else than Morrie. If the LA Times got a scoop, it was irrelevant. If Time or Newsweek wrote about something, it was old news. Variety was all that mattered to me. THR was founded in 1930 by Billy Wilkerson, a one-time owner of the Ciro's nightclub on the Sunset Strip as his answer to Variety, which had begun in 1905 as a New York based weekly chronicler of vaudeville and theater. The L.A. version, “Daily” Variety, started up in 1933. The trades were mostly about casting news, executive appointments, labor updates and “slate” stories. Like that Paramount was set to produce 8 new films in the coming year. It would go on to name them, and the attached producers and talent. But it was the exec appointments that were the lifeblood, because it told our subscribers who was in, and who was out. In other words, whom could they call on? My beat was home video and pay TV, two areas that were brand new, at a time when new channels like MTV and Disney Channel were launching. HBO was becoming a force in Hollywood, and the studios hated them back then. I reported that, and HBO despised me. I went out to lunch every day, pulling up to the valet in my white, beaten up and really dirty Mazda that was covered head to toe with bumper stickers. I arrived to fancy places like the Polo Lounge, Brown Derby, Jimmy's, the Palm and other long gone industry hang-outs because that's where the people I interviewed wanted to meet. Even with the THR/Variety rivalry, plenty of people were happy to talk to me. I just couldn't reach the top caliber as often as Variety did. Meanwhile, things were pretty crazy in the newsroom. Gina, Rena and Tina were three of the reporters, and every time one of their names was called out, they all turned and said, “Yes?” One of the sales associates, Pat, was all over the newsroom, daily, urging us to cozy up to her advertisers and write glowing pieces about them. Especially during AFM time. AFM was the American Film Market, and it was a venue where cheap independent movies were brokered in suites at a Sunset Strip hotel. Producers got attention for their shlocky titles by buying full page ads in THR. Menahem Golan and his Cannon Films was our benefactor. I didn't write about movies. But I wrote about Menahem. It was mandatory. He was a big advertiser. He paid our salaries. (Some of his films included titles like “Hospital Massacre” and “Enter the Ninja,” along with some “Death Wish” sequels and a Sylvester Stallone vehicle about arm wrestling called “Over the Top.”My first editor was fired after the publisher's daughter requested to have her boyfriend installed as editor instead. They married a year later, and when they returned from the honeymoon, the publisher fired her new son-in-law. No reason given. I left soon after. In recent times, THR engineered what seemed to be an amazing comeback, investing millions, switching from daily publication to online focus and producing a once a week glossy magazine that was like Vanity Fair with more of an industry bent. Variety, meanwhile, lost its muscle and took a backseat to the two hot online “trades” of the internet era, Deadline and TheWrap. Meanwhile, all that money THR spent on expansion wasn't paying off. The company had some big layoffs earlier this year, and now, it's part of the Penske Media Group. Which also owns Deadline and Billboard too. The only independent left is TheWrap. It's all so sad. But at least the THR reporters don't have to endure having their rivals stories circled anymore. P.S. And speaking of the photo angleIn keeping with the Photowalk theme of this newsletter, where are my great photos of the newsroom? I can only find one roll of Black & White Tri-X that was snapped during this time period, on a contact sheet. First of all, shame on me, for not being more proactive. But look at how far we've come folks! Back then, you had a choice of pro-level 35mm cameras, which were hard to operate for most people. “Disposable” cardboard cameras began appearing in the 1980s, but they were only used for special occasions and places with great light. So for everyday life, most of us never bothered. Compare that to now, where everyone you know has a camera in their pocket, and you can ask anyone to grab a shot of you with no issues. And the smartphone cameras are so good, they can shoot in pretty much any kind of light. Still, I would have loved to illustrate this post with historical images from the newsroom. For those of you reading, who may be in this position in a few years, some friendly words of advice. Take more photos, and back them up!Song of the WeekWho's a fan of “Dream a Little Dream of Me?” It's one of my favorites to play on the guitar. Trailer Watch the Film here. Synopsis In his 37 years, Rob Stewart had seemingly spent more time underwater than above. The Toronto-born marine biologist fuelled a literal sea-change with his 2006 film Sharkwater, about the endangerment of the seas’ top predator, and led an activist movement that saw more than 100 countries ban shark products. And it was on January 31, 2017, while seeking revolutionary footage of sawfish sharks mating near the wreck of the Queen of Nassau off the Florida Keys, that Stewart drowned in a bizarre series of events. As detailed in Robert Osborne’s The Third Dive, both Stewart and his diving instructor Peter Sotis made a risky third deep-dive of the day using ‘rebreather’ apparatus, in murky waters that frustrated filming efforts. Both divers seemed okay when reaching the surface. But Sotis lost consciousness after climbing onto the boat. Stewart apparently lost consciousness also, as the boat was swinging around to meet him. He disappeared, and his body was discovered by a remote submersible search vessel three days later. The Third Dive traces those events within the context of Florida Keys politics and accusations of whitewashing from within its community. Despite its reputation as a haven for ocean fun-seekers and pristine waters, at least 36 people drowned off the Florida Keys from 2013-2017. Many of them were mere statistics, attracting little notice in the media, but Stewart was not. Within 24 hours of his disappearance, it became clear that his plight would bring the attention of the world on the Keys’ community. ;’Throughout the investigation and the filming, I tried to never lose sight of what Rob Stewart accomplished,’ says Osborne. ‘He virtually saved a species single handedly and I felt that achievement should be reflected in the film.’ Biography Robert Osborne is the Senior Producer of Dam Builder Productions, and Jari Osborne is the Executive Producer. Robert has more than 30 years of working in long format television. For much of that time he was an investigative journalist working for the CTV show W5. He’s also worked for Marketplace and Pacific Report. Robert has developed a specialty in directing underwater-based documentaries. He holds nearly a dozen certifications including a cave-diving specialty. Robert has won more than half a dozen RTNDA Awards, a CAJ Award and an Award of Merit from the Governor General. He has been nominated countless times for Gemini awards and has been part of a team that won two. In 2012 he was nominated for a CSA Award for Unlocking Alex. Robert’s last film Unstoppable was an investigation inside the fentanyl epidemic sweeping across North America. The documentary, broadcast in 2016, has proved to be prophetic: “There’s still no sign that any government fully understands what a virtual force of nature this drug has become,” says Robert. He won a CSA for best writing in a documentary for Unstoppable. Dam Builder Productions has also produced documentaries for the CBC’s The Nature of Things and for the Discovery Channel. For more info head to the site here Image Copyright: Dam Builder Productions and Rob Osborne. Lights, camera action!  It’s time to head to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and enjoy the park’s iconic attraction, The Great Movie Ride!  Located in the Hollywood Boulevardd section of the park, the Great Movie Ride is described in the guide map in the following manner:  Journey into some of Hollywood’s most famous films.  This attraction is open to guests of any age and there are no height requirements.  Fastness plus is available for this attraction and the Thrill Level describes the ride as being Dark, Scary and a slow ride. Before films starts rolling, here are five fast facts about The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. 1.  The 22 minute long Great Movie Ride is an opening day attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and officially began operation on May 1, 1989. 2.   The Great Movie Ride is unique in that, on busy days, guests will experience one of two ‘takeovers’ of their ride vehicle.  If the ride vehicle is stopped in the western section off the attraction, the vehicle will be taken over by an outlaw named Kate Durango or Kid Carson.  If the ride vehicle is stopped in the gangster section of the ride, it will be commandeered by a gangster named mugsy.  Both the Outlaws or the gangster will force the regular tour operator out of the vehicle and continue on as the vehicle’s operator until the surprise return of the car’s starting operator. 3. As the ride vehicle enters the Raiders of the Lost Ark segment of the attraction, keep as sharp eye on hyrogliphics on the walls of the room.  One panel has hyrogliphic figures of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and another features star wars characters R2D2 and C3PO 4.  n the Casablanca scene, the front half of a real Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior plane can be seen.  Imagineers didn’t just throw away the back half of the plane because it wasn’t needed.  You can see the back half of the plane if you head over to the Magic Kingdom where it can be spotted in the jungle of the Jungle Cruise Attraction.  5.  In 2014, Turner Classic Movies became the sponsor of the Great Movie Ride and on May 29, 2015, the ride reopened with new on ride narration by TCM host Robert Osborne.  Rober Osborne passed away in 2017, but the attraction with his narration is what we will be listening to today. Now it’s time to experience The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  The main attraction audio we hear today will be the version where the gangster takes over the ride vehicle.  Ride audio from the attraction where the outlaw takes over the vehicle will be included the bonus audio available to the Saturday Morning Media Patreon Patrons who pledge at any level.  Stick around after the ride audio presented hear to hear my thoughts on this classic Walt Disney World attraction.  But for now, put on headphones because this is a binaural recording of the Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction, The Great Movie Ride. Robert Osborne   Robert and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Unstoppable, addiction, making choices and the Fentanyl epidemic in Canada.   Trailer   Synopsis    For the first time, CBC audiences can go beyond the headlines with unprecedented access to the world of illegal fentanyl, and a glimpse inside the mind of one of Canada's most (self-described) skilled producers of black market synthetic drugs, a man known simply as Beeker.   Much like the fictional Walter White character in the critically acclaimed television series "Breaking Bad,"Beeker is compelling, highly articulate, and an altogether unsettling presence.  An elite, underground chemist who lives in hiding, Beeker has twice been charged with making controlled substances. Willing to speak openly on-camera about his expertise and how the science of synthetics works, he also delivers a chilling warning: as deadly as fentanyl is, it will soon become "obsolete." The new class of more profitable, more powerful superdrugs it has spawned- are now being made available across Canada, and will cause chaos in our streets, and in our homes.   CBC’s Firsthand, "Unstoppable: The Fentanyl Epidemic" on Canada's point-of-view documentary series, reveals both a dangerous tipping point in the history of the synthetic drug trade, and a dark vision for the future - seen through the eyes of Beeker, and others whose lives and identities are inextricably tied to the legacy of illegal fentanyl.    Biography   Robert Osborne is a multi award winning investigative journalist, writer and television director.  He’s spent more than thirty years working for national newsmagazine programs including CTV’s W-5ive, CBC’s Marketplace, Pacific Report and Global Television’s National News.    In the past year he began working for the internationally acclaimed series “Drugs Inc.” on National Geographic channel providing investigative work for the producers.  He’s written investigative articles for the Toronto Star and the National Post.  As part of that work Robert has uncovered dozens of stories about the drug trade in Canada—the first complete national story on Fentanyl appearing in the National Post.  He’s also worked on numerous stories on drug pipelines between Asia and Canada.    He has extensive contacts both in the underworld, and with law enforcement across the country.  During the last thirty years Robert has won seven RTNDA awards (for Best On-going News Coverage, Best Feature Program and Best Investigative Documentary,) several gold medals from the New York Film Festival, a CAJ award for Investigative Journalism, (two additional finalist nominations), two Prix Aniks (CBC) and a Chris award from the Columbus Film Festival. He has also been nominated six times for Geminis (two wins for his show.)   In 2009 he received a Citation of Merit from the Governor General’s Michener Awards for a documentary on a lack of police accountability in Canada.  In 2013 Robert was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for his work on CTV.  ---------- For more information about my podcasting, writing and public speaking please visit my site here.   With thanks to producer Josh Snethlage and Mixed Media Sound.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Happy Hanukkah, listeners! In celebration of the holiday, The Four Seasons of Film is proud to present a very special episode. Nathan and Scotty watch The Ten Commandments (1956) and, of course, do most of the talking for you. They discuss Charlton Heston’s career, Biblical epics, Cecil B. DeMille, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971), Marlon Brando, The Story of Film: An Odyssey (2011), and give TCM and Robert Osborne a run for their money. Give thanks, give blessings, and light the Menorah with the Four Seasons of Film. This episode is sponsored by Philz Coffee.

In this episode, Daniel and Shana are highly amused (and at least somewhat impressed by) the second two-part story of Series 9, "Under the Lake/Before the Flood." A base-under-siege with a nifty Golden Age SF time travel twist, this story inspires discussion of subjugated peoples controlled by mental conditioning, the way that that metaphor might reflect modern-day patriarchal structures, and the use of time travel paradoxes in Moffat Who. Also: email about military adventurism in the Western world, discussion of the space opera elements of Blake's 7, and a rough definition of the word miniarchist. All that and a rubber monster, too.  Main Topic: Under the Lake/Before the Flood. Shana's Intro. Daniel didn't hate this. Where have these characters been? Semaphore. Sophie Stone. New producer. Our deaf listeners? An email from Henry, our miniarchist friend. Quote, unquote. Literally. "Don't ding a poet!" Blake's 7. The Underwater Menace DVD and the possibility of streaming. A letter from Tom and military metaphor. "Lean back and think of England." Toby Whithouse. Shana does her Susan Foreman impersonation for Jack Graham. Petroleum. I'm from UNIT. Pacing. O'Donnel versus Osgood. The Cold War. Prentiss and BDSM. The Tivolians and the Ood. Not Robin Williams. Daniel is an idiot. The love stories. Feels like a Classic Who four-parter. Still not a bossy control freak. Dynamic female characters. The bootstrap paradox. Breaking the fourth wall. Rock star anarchist Rod Serling. Our blind listeners. Doctor Who as a time travel story. Robert Osborne. Structure. Fixed points and Time Lords. Flood myths. Bigger pictures. "Can we call him Aladdin?" Consistent universes. Alien races in Classic Who. Trek vs. Who. "They can't say the Doctor's been racist for 2000 years." Future history. Creature design. The Fisher King versus the Graf Vynda-K. Screwdriver vs. Sunglasses. Next week: State of Decay.  Full Battle Rattle, a documentary mentioned in the show. Shana and Daniel discuss The Mind Robber and the God Complex. Find Our Stuff!  Find us on iTunes! Or Facebook! There's too much to listen to, there's the ride audio, there's a narration from Robert Osborne, and the narration from the cast member driving your vehicle just seems like too much.

Joan Kramer and David Heeley drop by to discuss In the Company of Legends, their behind-the-scenes book about the marvelous movie star documentaries they've worked on together. Starting with their award-winning profiles of Fred Astaire in 1980, Kramer and Heeley produced film portraits of the lives and careers of many Hollywood legends including Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, Judy Garland and Humphrey Bogart, This dynamic duo established a reputation for finding the un-findable, persuading the reluctant, and maintaining unique relationships long after the end credits rolled. This interview is a must-hear for true movie addicts everywhere!   The late great Robert Osborne, famous host of Turner Classic Movies, calls In the Company of Legends one of the best reasons ever for curling up with a book, and talk show host Dick Cavett says the Kramer/Heeley memoir was so hard to put down that he ate with one hand while reading it. Osborne goes on to praise the book because it’s about dazzling personalities told by people who actually knew the celebrities they write about, worked with them and, further, socialized with them, aware of their foibles and strengths from first-hand knowledge, not hearsay. Among the Kramer and Heeley documentaries are: Katharine Hepburn: All About Me; Bacall on Bogart; The John Garfield Story; The Adventures of Errol Flynn; The Spencer Tracey Legacy; James Stewart: A Wonderful Life;Fonda on Fonda; Fred Astaire: Puttin’ on His Top Hat; Fred Astaire: Change Partners and Dance.

Film historian James Colt Harrison and Classic Film Guide founder Diana Saenger plan to join the festivities. Plus, Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne has been invited to call in. Listeners will also hear a clip from Cammie King Conlon's interview about playing Rhett and Scarlett's doomed daughter, Bonnie Blue Butler.  Gone with the Wind, released in 1939, received 10 Oscars. It has been screened millions of times throughout the world. Fans of this beloved epic continue to celebrate the movie at various GWTW conventions. To honor this important anniversary, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has teamed up with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, Fathom Events and The Harry Ransom Center for a multi-tiered celebration that includes a new Blu-ray release, screenings at over 600 theaters, an exhibit and new book on the making of the film, and a special screening of the movie on Turner Classic Movies. These activities are scheduled for the last part of September and early October. The late Cammie King Conlon, author of Bonnie Blue Butler: A Gone with the Wind Memoir, visited Movie Addict HQ four years ago to discuss her delightful book, which is filled with fascinating inside information concerning what happened on and off the set, including what it was like to work with Clark Gable and director Victor Fleming. Movie fans should enjoy hearing about these experiences in the clip from her terrific interview.

Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast

Millions of movie buffs know Robert Osborne as the elegant, erudite film historian and host of Turner Classic Movies, but few know that he spent time as a struggling actor, was mentored by comedy legend Lucille Ball, and even appeared in the pilot of "The Beverly Hillbillies" -- a show he was certain would "never catch on." A while back, Gilbert sat in as TCM's "Guest Programmer" and now Robert generously returns the favor by traveling to Manhattan's Society of Illustrators on an oppressively hot July evening to dish a little dirt and share anecdotes about Hollywood luminaries Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Natalie Wood and Walt Disney (among others).
