THE OTHER GARDENERS by Very Good Dance TheatreWhat happens to (y)our gardens when we can no longer tend to them? When do the things and thoughts we leave behind become burdens, and when are they gifts? Can we both be refreshing fountains of reprieve for others, while we remember to pour into ourselves? What to do when our cup runneth over, and what to do when she's dryyyyyy ... we don't know, will you help us find out?"The Other Gardeners" is a new project created collaboratively by Very Good Dance Theatre by and for Black artists and/or those from African lineage. "Gardeners" playfully (re)imagines what remains of Eden after its more popular residents (Adam & Eve) have moved on, and reminds us that paradise cannot be destroyed, only lost. This project explores questions around lineage, diaspora(s), liberation, and asks all those in its midst to grapple with which burdens have been placed on them, by who, and how we can shoulder them (together). This is a Black queering of our origin stories, both a prequel and a sequel, and a conjuring of all the auto-biographies that never came to be ... or at least not yet?Expect sobbing and laughing, remembering and visioning, dreaming and forgetting, and loving and loving and loving.Come to learn, come to share, come to mourn, come alone (or not), leave together - connected - nurtured, just as gardens should be.ABOUT THE EVENT:Cannonball Festival is an independently produced performing arts festival, concurrent with the Philadelphia Fringe, that presents risk-taking independent artists in back-to-back performances next to delicious lounge spaces, fostering creative collisions and community conversation. Philly brings it on the big screen and on the stage, and the guests on this episode of Love + Grit work behind the scenes to make it all happen, proving that the heart and soul of a travel destination are the people we meet. Shawn Finnie’s journey is an incredible example of our city’s resilience and grit. His career path brought him from Philly to experiencing homelessness in New York City to Los Angeles, where he now works for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, ensuring that diverse voices and backgrounds aren’t just represented, but also engaged and activated. And in Philly, Wilma Theater Managing Director Leigh Goldenberg — also the brains behind the annual Philly Theatre Week — joins the conversation to discuss efforts to increase diversity on local stages and expand the prestigious Barrymore Awards with honors for gender-inclusive performances.

Philly’s art scene (and the city in general) just got a very cool new addition. It’s called Wonderspaces, and this beautiful new art venue brings art installations and pieces from all over the world to showcase here in Philly. Wonderspaces currently houses fourteen art installations that all play with the idea of perspective.  The artwork ranges from an award-winning virtual reality short film about a dinner party-turned-alien abduction, to a room where visitors digitally paint the walls with movement. It’s sort of hard to describe, but definitely worth checking out. Listen as Jennifer McCreary, the General Manager of Wonderspace speaks with Kristen about the venture’s concept, current line-up, and plans for the future. Tickets and info at wonderspaces.com. Then, Riverdance is in town! Seen live by over 27.5 million people in 546 venues worldwide. Catch the show at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater through Sunday, January 26th with two performances on Saturday (2pm and 8pm) and two performances on Sunday (1pm and 6:30pm). Two of the lead dancers, Gianna Petrasic and Will Bryant join Kristen in the studio to talk about what it’s like to dance in this classic show, the history of Riverdance, and the way that it has been adapted for its 25th season and a whole new audience.  Buy tickets at KimmelCenter.org.  Then Leigh Goldenberg, Executive Director of Theatre Philadelphia, returns to BEN Around Philly to offer details about the 3rd Annual Philly Theatre Week, going on February 6th-16th. A 10 day festival involving over 75 organizations, Philly Theatre Week features over 300 events and performances, including productions, readings, interactive events, and much more! See as many shows as you can, and use this opportunity to take a chance on an unknown show or try something out of the box! Tickets are on sale now, and priced to be accessible to everyone at $30, $15, and FREE. Purchase through TodayTix, and learn more at www.phillytheatreweek.com.
