The Wedding Present formed 40 years ago – why does that seem astonishing? - and have a new box set and tour to celebrate. David Gedge digs out his old notes about the first gigs he ever saw and played and looks back at what four decades onstage might have taught him. Among the delights … … Rick Wakeman in full cape attire at Manchester Free Trade Hall in '76 and how Be-bop Deluxe pointed to the future … the bone-dry humour of the Ramones – “the only time I ever pogo-ed” – and memories of seeing Wire and Queen. … how Leeds' goth culture coloured his early band the Lost Pandas (who had the nerve to play “minor chords”) … ‘Reception: The Wedding Present Musical', about to open in Leeds and built around stories, characters and relationships in his songs. “Musicals are very divisive and I wasn't sure I liked them” … “meticulous and geeky”: how the set lists flow and the two songs he never omits … how John Peel playing Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy! ten times launched the Wedding Present: “he was like the Emperor Nero really, almost too powerful. If he didn't like you, you could vanish without trace” ... the unexpected challenge of band member manipulation … “if anything gets a laugh, repeat it” … and costly future visions of the Wedding Present plus orchestra! There's a new theater company that opened about a mile from Dennis's home in North Hollywood called The Wisteria Theater and it's a magical place. The show that's currently running there is Xanadu: The Musical, based on the iconic Olivia Newton-John movie musical that Dennis has been obsessed with since 1980. In this episode, Dennis welcomes the team behind the show to play a couple rounds of his game You Don't Know My Life! The five guests are Renée Wylder (Producer and Wisteria Theater co-founder), acress Lexi Collins (Kira, Wisteria Theater company co-founder), actors Connor Bullock (Sonny) and Kelby Thwaits (Danny) as well as the show's director Brayden Hade. The two questions posed during the game are 1) "Xanadu is a story about dreams. When was a time in your life when you thought, OMG, this is a dream come true?" And 2) You come across an old diary entry with the headline A Night at the Theater I'll Never Forget. What happens in it?" Their stories involve everything from scoring big career breaks to on stage mishaps to trying to do a show in a tornado to pigging out on chips and tacos at Salsa y Beer down the street from the Wisteria. Xanadu runs at the Wisteria through August 10th www.wisteriatheater.com
'Dying for Sex' and ‘Catastrophe' star Rob Delaney joins the show. Over iced coffees and schnitzel, Rob tells me about getting sober in his twenties, his surprising start in musical theatre, and life as an American raising three kids in London. We also talk about his role opposite Michelle Williams in Hulu's ‘Dying for Sex,' what gets harder (and easier) with age, and why he finally walked away from social media. Send us a textWhilst Brigadoon continued rehearsals, Cavan Clarke sat down with us to discuss the eagerly anticipated revival of Lerner & Leowe's beloved musical. The production also marks an exciting return for Cavan to Regent's Park Open Air Theatre following his acclaimed performance as Mercutio in Kimberley Syke's production of Romeo & Juliet in 2021. Brigadoon has often been described as one of the greatest musicals to come out of the Golden Age of Musicals, and has been much missed in London after experiencing a 20 year absence from the UK stage. In Drew McOnie's production, Cavan Clarke plays Jeff Douglas, a pleasure seeker and companion to Tommy Albright who arrive at the Scottish Highlands in the middle of World War II. The show's been adapted by Rona Munro and we hear Cavan talk about her updates to this classic show and what audiences can perhaps expect from this new productionIn our interview, Cavan Clarke talks to us about making his professional musical theatre debut having long been a fan of musicals himself. During our conversation, we looked back on some of his career highlights including playing Mercutio at Regent's Park, and his work on the landmark production of Small Island at the National Theatre. We hear him talk about the challenges of being a jobbing actor too and the sacrifices one sometimes has to make in order to make ends meet. We also talk to Cavan about his relationship with rising star Jack Wolfe, and how he hopes to work together on a project in the future. It seems like an exciting time for Cavan Clarke and we hope this won't be the last time he features in a musical too.Brigadoon runs at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre from 2 August - 20 September 2025 with tickets available now.Support the show

For this episode we are joined by Jo Durrant, creator of the amazing podcast Jo Durrant's Beautiful Universe (and I am not just saying that because we are frequent guests on it). Jo's podcast deals mainly with all things science. However, those of you that listen to Jo know also she is a keen musical watcher. We thought it would be great to have Jo as a guest and talk about her favourite top ten musicals. Jo agreed, and now we have our Summer special – a fun show that's a little different for us. It even got Graham singing along! If you know what Jo's fantastic musical selections are, you'll have to give the podcast a listen. To help, here are a few advance clues as to some of the films included · A film Jeff really hates (and one that has been discussed on Jo's podcast, so has some science attached to it). · One that has never gone out of fashion or favour since its release in the 1970's · A remake that proves a musical can raise important social points · Includes a film which again Jeff didn't like (does he like any) but conceded he might be wrong and agreed to rewatch (check out the skies for the second coming). Do you agree with Jo's choices? Please let us know. Enjoy and see you At The Flicks

Tonight's Triple Feature digs deep into the emotional terrain of three strikingly different but thematically aligned musicals: O'Dessa (Hulu, 2024), The End (2024), and Dear Evan Hansen (2021). On the surface, these films couldn't be more dissimilar in aesthetic—one is a Southern-fried post-apocalyptic fairy tale, one a sleek black comedy about the apocalypse itself, and the last a grounded teen drama about lies and loneliness. But together, they form a mosaic of Western culture's collective longing for connection, identity, and redemption in a fractured world.Musicals have always been about big emotions. Characters sing when mere speech can't carry the weight of what they're feeling. But in this particular set, the music isn't just emotional punctuation—it's confession. Each film uses the form to excavate shame, grief, isolation, and the human capacity for either healing or self-destruction. These aren't the tap-dancing musicals of old Hollywood or even the bombastic showstoppers of Hamilton. These are musical dramas where the songs feel like psychological x-rays.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Ep 343 of RevolutionZ has Gene Bruskin, long time and many issues, labor organizer to discuss workers' responses to rising fascism, our current predicaments and our potential paths forward. Why does America's labor movement struggle to mount a unified response to authoritarianism, one for all and all for one? How did post-WWII labor structures intentionally divide workers by union and industry, creating what Bruskin calls a system "structured to divide ourselves"? Why do significant segments of working people support Trump despite his anti-worker policies? Bruskin challenges simplistic explanations, arguing that economic desperation combined with Democrats' unwillingness to confront billionaires and inequality created an opening for "phony populism." When Trump says "I feel your pain" while Democrats offer only rhetoric, many desperate workers took a chance on the disruptor. We also discuss Bruskin's post-retirement work creating political musicals about working-class history and struggle. His productions about Reconstruction and the abolitionist, John Brown, act on his belief that cultural resistance is essential for movement-building. Bruskin says, "We couldn't have won the civil rights movement if people couldn't be singing 'We Shall Not Be Moved' while they were being hauled to jail." Bruskin leaves us with a powerful metaphor from a banquet waiter who, when pressured to give a senator special treatment and dismissively asked if he didn't know who the Senator was, responds: "Do you know who I am? I'm the guy who gives out the bread and butter." This encapsulated Bruskin's point: working people must recognize their collective power. As he put it: "Do you need the boss, or does the boss need you?"Support the show
