Full Text of Readings Tuesday of the Second Week of Lent Lectionary: 231 The Saint of the day is Saint Katharine Drexel Saint Katharine Drexel's Story If your father is an international banker and you ride in a private railroad car, you are not likely to be drawn into a life of voluntary poverty. But if your mother opens your home to the poor three days each week and your father spends half an hour each evening in prayer, it is not impossible that you will devote your life to the poor and give away millions of dollars. Katharine Drexel did that. Born in Philadelphia in 1858, she had an excellent education and traveled widely. As a rich girl, Katharine also had a grand debut into society. But when she nursed her stepmother through a three-year terminal illness, she saw that all the Drexel money could not buy safety from pain or death, and her life took a profound turn. Saint Katharine Drexel had always been interested in the plight of the Indians, having been appalled by what she read in Helen Hunt Jackson's A Century of Dishonor. While on a European tour, she met Pope Leo XIII and asked him to send more missionaries to Wyoming for her friend Bishop James O'Connor. The pope replied, “Why don't you become a missionary?” His answer shocked her into considering new possibilities. Back home, Katharine visited the Dakotas, met the Sioux leader Red Cloud and began her systematic aid to Indian missions. Saint Katharine Drexel could easily have married. But after much discussion with Bishop O'Connor, she wrote in 1889, “The feast of Saint Joseph brought me the grace to give the remainder of my life to the Indians and the Colored.” Newspaper headlines screamed “Gives Up Seven Million!” After three and a half years of training, Mother Drexel and her first band of nuns—Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored—opened a boarding school in Santa Fe. A string of foundations followed. By 1942, she had a system of black Catholic schools in 13 states, plus 40 mission centers and 23 rural schools. Segregationists harassed her work, even burning a school in Pennsylvania. In all, she established 50 missions for Indians in 16 states. Two saints met when Saint Katharine Drexel was advised by Mother Cabrini about the “politics” of getting her order's Rule approved in Rome. Her crowning achievement was the founding of Xavier University in New Orleans, the first Catholic university in the United States for African Americans. At 77, Mother Drexel suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire. Apparently her life was over. But now came almost 20 years of quiet, intense prayer from a small room overlooking the sanctuary. Small notebooks and slips of paper record her various prayers, ceaseless aspirations, and meditations. She died at 96 and was canonized in 2000. Reflection Saints have always said the same thing: Pray, be humble, accept the cross, love and forgive. But it is good to hear these things in the American idiom from one who, for instance, had her ears pierced as a teenager, who resolved to have “no cake, no preserves,” who wore a watch, was interviewed by the press, traveled by train, and could concern herself with the proper size of pipe for a new mission. These are obvious reminders that holiness can be lived in today's culture as well as in that of Jerusalem or Rome. Saint Katharine Drexel reminds us that holiness can take many paths, but all of them lead to God. Saint Katharine Drexel: Pray for us!Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

This week, we welcome the brilliant Dylan Meconis, creator of Queen of the Sea and Bite Me. Here's what we cover: How most colorists actually break in (hint: it's not by “murdering another colorist in single combat” — though that was discussed) What “flatting” is — and why it's often your first step into paid coloring work Why networking is really just “being friends with cartoonists” Portfolio strategy: Why saying “I do everything” is less effective than saying “I do this brilliantly” Analog coloring techniques — watercolor paper, oil-based pencils, and why certain materials go extinct at the worst possible moment The realities of scanning physical art (and why scanners are basically cameras on an arm) How to handle black plates, rich black, and avoiding fuzzy type in print If you've ever wondered whether coloring could be an income stream for you — or how to level up your current process — this episode is a masterclass. Living in Japan, the dominant image of Lafcadio Hearn is something like: he's that white man who came to Japan and told us he believed in us—he knew we had it in us to become the honorary-white vassal of Anglo-America that we are today! A new TV drama on the national broadcaster NHK lavishes screen time on a klutzy Lafcadio adorably befuddled by Japanese culture, baffled by the Japanese language, and played by a blue-eyed English actor—which is especially interesting because the real Lafcadio was a brown man born of the last Crusade, or maybe the first color revolution: the Greek war of independence from Ottoman Turkey, which was sponsored by a rising British Empire. His mother, a true daughter of the Afro-Asiatic merchant capitalist world with relatives on every shore of the Mediterranean, got in trouble with his father's English family for piercing little Lafcadio's ears and putting hoops in them. I run through a collection of his writings in Cinncinnatti and New Orleans, where he lived on the Colored side of town (not entirely by choice) and dedicated himself to recording the lives and speculating on the hopes and possibilities of declassed, liquidated, and colonized peoples that Amerikkka has always burned for fuel. In the end, he was converted to a social-Darwinist libertarianism that left no room for sincere solidarity, and this casts his later embrace of a rising Japan in a different light. Hosted on Acast. Intertextual Experience is ecstatic to bring in the New Year with Alex Hague, the CEO of board game company CMYK. For a show that likes to explore ideas and stories through different lenses, CMYK provides a perfect color model for us to create these different colored lenses. Through a twisted version of the game Figment, Alex is subjected to a slew of challenges and questions while coming out victorious. Come explore CMYK's vision, the Hot Streak that was 2025 for the company, an alternate reality where CMYK is a war game publisher, and so much more. “Somebody almost walked off wiith all my stuff.” Join Ian & Liam for our 312th episode as we step into the emotionally raw, confrontational, and fiercely theatrical world of For Colored Girls (2010) — a film that asks big questions about pain, survival, and voice, and demands we sit with the discomfort of its delivery. We're later joined by BFF of the BFE: Juleen for The Endgame, as we try to make sense of what hits hardest… and what doesn't land at all. This week we discuss: Whether For Colored Girls successfully translates from stage to screen — or if something vital is lost in the move from choreopoem to cinema. The central tension — is it possible to fully agree with a film's message and still believe it's not a well-made film? The sheer level of star power — and why the performances feel wildly disparate. Which ones moved us, which ones frustrated us, and which ones actively pulled us out of the film. Who unexpectedly steals the show — emerging from the ensemble to deliver a performance that cuts through everything else. The question of tone — is there simply too much poetry here, even when it's beautifully spoken and powerfully performed? How close this film came to being worse — and how an originally cast actress's pregnancy may have unintentionally saved the film from an even harsher imbalance. Ian questions the film's direction and framing — does Tyler Perry trust the material enough, or does the camera overemphasise emotion that should be allowed to breathe? Liam explores the film's confrontational style — is the lack of subtlety a flaw, or is subtlety beside the point entirely? The emotional toll — is the film asking us to witness pain, process it, or simply endure it? Juleen joins us for The Endgame — bringing insight, perspective, and lived context to the discussion, and helping us unpack what the film is reaching for, even when it misses. The ending — cathartic, overwhelming, or emotionally blunt? We unpack whether the final moments feel earned. And finally, whether For Colored Girls is the Best Film Ever — or a deeply important work whose ambition outpaces its execution. At 65 years old and 210 pounds, I saw a photo on social media and didn't recognize myself. That moment of disbelief led me to Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA), where I discovered I wasn't just overweight – I was a food addict. As an African American woman, I grew up hearing that I'd have to work twice as hard to succeed, and the pressure turned into perfectionism. For years, I ate to cope, buying sweets late at night and eating in the car so no one would see. I knew every bakery on my route to work, each pink box “for everyone else.” After a stressful day, I'd close the curtains, turn on the TV, and eat. When I read the AA Big Book and swapped the word alcohol for food, I finally saw the truth. I'd heard about FA more than ten years earlier, but only when I was ready did I find what I needed: a sponsor, a scale, and a way to live without food running my life. I'm learning to live with grace, even through the biggest challenges. When my husband faced his fourth cancer diagnosis, I wanted to eat -- but instead, I dropped to my knees and asked for help. My fellows and my family brought meals, comfort, and strength when I needed it most. Today, at 76 – one day at a time – I am free from the addiction that once ruled my life. #africanamerican #foodaddiction #fromperfectionismtopeace #iamafoodaddict

In this episode of Coastal Idiots…Katherine and Shane go comment for comment as they compare their most unhinged DMs and replies. After hearing the critics' reviews in Shane's comments section, Katherine decides, in true LA fashion, it's time for Shane to blend in—with a mobile spray tan, obviously. Cut to the duo in their skivvies, getting painted like discount Oscar statues in the middle of a public driveway. Once they're sufficiently bronzed, nostalgia hits hard as the golden glow reminds them of 7/11 roller dogs. They reconvene in the studio with their hilarious pal and fellow hot-dog connoisseur, comedian Graham Kay, to share chaotic travel stories and debate the ultimate 7/11 death row meal. Things take a turn when Graham has a full-blown existential crisis over a massive mistake he made right before their big Tokyo trip. Oh—and there are listener voicemails, including a grown man swearing at a child's birthday party, and an uncomfortable number of bare toes making guest appearances. Eat. It. Up. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Coastal Idiots is a weekly comedy podcast where each week your host Shane and Katherine are joined by a friend or two where they do something very stupid and hilarious. Follow Katherine and Shane so they have a reason to keep going. The show is produced by the marvelous Keida Mascaro. Some of the art on the walls by the great Perry Shall. Music by Gymshorts and Alex Orange Drink. Your favorite idiots are now available wherever you listen to podcasts! What happens when an ER physician and a psychologist both hit burnout at the same time? In Dr. Jack Hay and Dr. Harry Pepper's case, they decided to build something different together. In this episode, Dr. Hay and Dr. Pepper share the real story behind opening Oberlin Ketamine Clinic in Ohio. Including their unique physician-psychologist partnership model, how they've made personalized music a core part of their ketamine therapy approach, and why they're so intentional about trauma-informed care. This isn't a polished success story. They walk us through their first-year challenges, the difference between integration coaching and traditional therapy (and why that distinction matters), and their philosophy of empowering patients to choose their own music playlists instead of prescribing one-size-fits-all soundtracks. What really stood out? How they've built their practice around their core values instead of just copying what other clinics are doing. What you'll gain

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Lorenzo: Hi Dr. C — We spoke briefly during the September 11th IHP live Q&A about Uterine Fibroids. I've been digging into whether progesterone-only birth control pills contribute to fibroid growth, but the research is all over the place—some say yes, some no, and some say it depends on if the person is taking Progesterone & Estrogen BC, as well as other individual factors. I've linked a few studies below and would love if you could do a deep dive on this to help demystify the topic. I always appreciate your unbiased take and how much your work has helped me and my clients! Thanks! Research Links: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7762035/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37190026/ https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3184215/ Angela: Hi Dr. Cabral. I was wondering if you can do a show or comment on vagus nerve stimulation and what your thoughts are on it. I am current using one called Vagustim. I heard of another person using it and helped them with gut health. I have a very stressful job and I am trying to calm myself at night. The stress most likely has caused slow motility leading to SIBO. I think you mentioned you were going to do a podcast on this topic. Thank you. Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral, I had a colonoscopy done recently. Everything was fine except that they found 1 innocuous polyp (now excised) and a dark colored colon. Due to the color, they asked me if I take stimulant laxatives, which I do not with regularity. Ive probably taken 2 bottles of Senna in my life, so I dont think that would be the cause. I rarely take stim. laxatives due to dependance risks. I do take mag07 every day, which is oxygenated mag oxide to help with bio-availability. I wanted to ask if you would know what else might cause this darkening? Are there any health issues that could be the cause? Im 40 and have been diagnosed with functional dyspepsia and mild gastritis from an endoscopy. Thanks Jessica: Hi Dr. Cabral..I love my work as a hairstylist but I'm worried about my long-term exposure to chemicals. I don't want to give up my career but I also don't want to end up with chronic health issues from repeated exposure. What steps can I take on a regular basis to help reduce my risk and protect myself while continuing to work? Thank you so much! Ryan: I am a 48 year old man , used to be a high end athlete and still like to work out 3x a week so have muscle still but cannot lean out and have lots of fat too. I am 6'1 320 lbs but don't look overly fat. I am concerned for met healthy and organs with this heavy weight. I have Avery bad habit of waking up in middle of night and binge eating - thinking that's my problem but I am half asleep when I do it and have no control, how can I fix this ? Also if you have any healthy daily routines I would to hear them. Now that we're a monthly news pod for kids – boy, do we have a doozy of an episode for y'all! First up, we'll explain why people in Denmark are offering their ailing pets as food (!) at zoos - yes, we'll dive deep into the Danish cycle – or circle – of life belief. Staying with nature, move over Nemo - there's a shark that's been spotted off the coast of Costa Rica, lighting up the ocean. In tech news is it the end of batteries for our tech devices? If so, then how? And the search is BACK on for Amelia Earhart's plane that famously went down in the Pacific Ocean way back in 1937. In entertainment news Taylor Swift is finally getting hitched. In sports find out who takes the crown in The Little League World Series. (Clue – it's actually a worldly team!) And, why, oh, why do the Spanish like to toss tomatoes? At each other? Yes, we'll have a special report from one of the craziest, or do we mean tastiest, festivals around. All that and more in this monthly episode.
