Augustus is the most significant nonreligious figure in history. He is probably the greatest political genius of all time. He created the Roman Empire which lasted for centuries and formed so much of the world we live in today, including our calendar, our system of time, our alphabet, the spread of Christianity, and a large percentage of modern languages.
At Philippi, Octavius and Antony disagree over tactics but unite against Brutus and Cassius when they meet for one final negotiation before battle. They hurl insults at each other and part ways. Brutus and Cassius discuss what will happen if they lose. Brutus vows he will not be taken captive. The two friends say goodbye and go into battle. As Brutus attacks Octavius's army, Cassius watches his troops flee from Antony's soldiers. When he hears from Pindarus that Antony has entered his camp, Cassius realizes that he is likely to die on this day, which happens to be his birthday. He tells Pindaurs to kill him with his own sword. Pindarus obeys and flees, embracing her freedom. Upon discovering Cassius's body, Titinius sends Messala to find Pindaus. Once alone, Titinius kills himself with Cassius's sword. Brutus gets word that Cassius is dead and does his best to rally his troops. Young Cato is killed. Lucilius pretends to be Brutus and is captured. Antony praises Lucilius's bravery and tells his troops to treat him well. Realizing he's defeated, Brutus asks his soldiers to kill him but they refuse. He bids them farewell, then impales himself on his sword, which Lucius holds. Antony and Octavius arrive to find Brutus' body. They praise his honor and vow to bury him with a soldier's glory. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
As Brutus waits for Cassius in the rebel camp, he learns from Lucilius that Cassius is not as friendly as he once was. As soon as he arrives, Cassius accuses Brutus of wronging him. Not wanting their soldiers to see them fighting, they withdraw into Brutus's tent to carry out their argument in private. It all comes to an end when Cassius offers his dagger to Brutus and bares his chest for Brutus to kill him. Once they make their peace, Brutus tells Cassius that his wife, Portia, has killed herself by swallowing hot coals. Cassius is shocked and saddened but Brutus insists that they focus on their battle plans. Cassius suggests they wait for Antony and Octavius' armies to exhaust themselves reaching them where they are now but Brutus disagrees, saying they should meet their enemy half way, at Philippi. Cassius gives in. Once alone, Brutus is visited by Caesar's ghost, who tells him they will meet again at Philippi. Brutus wakes his guards but they all say they didn't see anything. He sends word to Cassius to be ready to march ahead of him the next morning. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. At Caesar's funeral, the angry crowd demands answers. Brutus speaks first, saying that he loved Rome more than Caesar. Asking the crowd if they would rather be free with Caesar dead or slaves with Caesar alive, the crowd sides with Brutus. But when Antony enters with Caesar's body, things begin to change. He reminds the crowd of Caesar's good qualities and shows them the wounds on Caesar's body where each knife pierced his skin. Then he reads Caesar's will, revealing that Caesar has bequeathed to every citizen his dream of equality. Antony doesn't just win the crowd over to his side, he whips them into an angry mob intent on revenge. As the crowd rages, Antony's guard tells him that Octavius and Lepidus have arrived in Rome and that the conspirators have fled the city. Out in the streets, the mob confronts Cinna the Poet, who they mistake for Cinna the conspirator. She tries to reason with them but they rip her to pieces with their bare hands. Later, Antony meets Octavius and Lepidus to form the new triumvirate of Rome. Together, they choose which conspirators are to die. Once alone with Octavius, Antony questions Lepidus's integrity. Octavius defends him but Antony persists in his critique before turning their attention to preparations for the ensuing Civil War against Cassius and Brutus. Learn more about your ad choices. Caesar approaches the Temple, noting that the “Ides of March” have come. He refuses to read Artemidorus's warning. Cassius worries their plot has been discovered but Brutus reassures him. As they approach the Temple, Metellus Cimber pleads with Caesar to return her brother, Publius, from banishment. Caesar refuses. Once inside the Temple, the conspirators surround Caesar and stab him to death, proclaiming “Tyranny is dead!” Antony's servant enters and reports that Antony has fled to his house. Brutus invites the conspirators to bathe their hands in Caesar's blood. As a crowd assembles outside the Temple, Antony's servant returns to ask for safe passage for Antony to speak with the assassins. Brutus grants his request. Antony enters and offers his life unless they can justify their actions. Brutus tells him that all will be explained once they've quelled the crowd. Antony shakes hands with each of the conspirators and requests permission to speak at Caesar's funeral. Cassius is reluctant but Brutus agrees, making Antony promise not to speak poorly about them. Once alone with Caesar's body, Antony mourns and vows revenge. Octavius's guard enters to give word that Octavius is on his way to the city. Antony tells him to report to Octavius about what's happened and to warn him not to arrive until they see how things unfold. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Welcome to Episode 250 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we have a thread to discuss this and all of our podcast episodes. Today we are continuing to review Cicero's "On the Nature of The Gods," which began with the Epicurean spokesman Velleius defending the Epicurean point of view. This week will continue into Section 37 as Cotta, the Academic Skeptic, continues to attack the Epicurean view of the nature of divinity. XXXVII. ... for you asserted likewise that the form of the Deity is perceptible by the mind, but not by sense; that it is neither solid, nor invariable in number; that it is to be discerned by similitude and transition, and that a constant supply of images is perpetually flowing on from innumerable atoms, on which our minds are intent; so that we from that conclude that divine nature to be happy and everlasting. XXXVIII. What, in the name of those Deities concerning whom we are now disputing, is the meaning of all this? For if they exist only in thought, and have no solidity nor substance, what difference can there be between thinking of a Hippocentaur and thinking of a Deity? Other philosophers call every such conformation of the mind a vain motion; but you term it “the approach and entrance of images into the mind.” Thus, when I imagine that I behold T. Gracchus haranguing the people in the Capitol, and collecting their suffrages concerning M. Octavius, I call that a vain motion of the mind: but you affirm that the images of Gracchus and Octavius are present, which are only conveyed to my mind when they have arrived at the Capitol. The case is the same, you say, in regard to the Deity, with the frequent representation of which the mind is so affected that from thence it may be clearly understood that the Gods are happy and eternal. Let it be granted that there are images by which the mind is affected, yet it is only a certain form that occurs; and why must that form be pronounced happy? why eternal? But what are those images you talk of, or whence do they proceed? This loose manner of arguing is taken from Democritus; but he is reproved by many people for it; nor can you derive any conclusions from it: the whole system is weak and imperfect. For what can be more improbable than that the images of Homer, Archilochus, Romulus, Numa, Pythagoras, and Plato should come into my mind, and yet not in the form in which they existed? How, therefore, can they be those persons? And whose images are they? Aristotle tells us that there never was such a person as Orpheus the poet; and it is said that the verse called Orphic verse was the invention of Cercops, a Pythagorean; yet Orpheus, that is to say, the image of him, as you will have it, often runs in my head. What is the reason that I entertain one idea of the figure of the same person, and you another? Why do we image to ourselves such things as never had any existence, and which never can have, such as Scyllas and Chimæras? Why do we frame ideas of men, countries, and cities which we never saw? How is it that the very first moment that I choose I can form representations of them in my mind? How is it that they come to me, even in my sleep, without being called or sought after? XXXIX. The whole affair, Velleius, is ridiculous. You do not impose images on our eyes only, but on our minds. Such is the privilege which you have assumed of talking nonsense with impunity. But there is, you say, a transition of images flowing on in great crowds in such a way that out of many some one at least must be perceived! I should be ashamed of my incapacity to understand this if you, who assert it, could comprehend it yourselves; for how do you prove that these images are continued in uninterrupted motion? Or, if uninterrupted, still how do you prove them to be eternal? There is a constant supply, you say, of innumerable atoms. But must they, for that reason, be all eternal? To elude this, you have recourse to equilibration (for so, with your leave, I will call your Ἰσονομία), and say that as there is a sort of nature mortal, so there must also be a sort which is immortal. By the same rule, as there are men mortal, there are men immortal; and as some arise from the earth, some must arise from the water also; and as there are causes which destroy, there must likewise be causes which preserve. Be it as you say; but let those causes preserve which have existence themselves. I cannot conceive these your Gods to have any. But how does all this face of things arise from atomic corpuscles? Were there any such atoms (as there are not), they might perhaps impel one another, and be jumbled together in their motion; but they could never be able to impart form, or figure, or color, or animation, so that you by no means demonstrate the immortality of your Deity.

In 1998, the groundbreaking artist Gordon Parks brought 177 rappers and hip hop artists, some of them rivals, together for his photograph, “A Great Day in Hip Hop.” When it was included in an exhibit at the St. Louis Art Museum, Adrian Octavius Walker was chosen to continue Parks' story by photographing a gathering of 116 members of the St. Louis music scene. His photo, ”A Great Day in Saint Louis," highlights the way in which art can bring people together, something that Adrian loves about running. That wasn't the only honor he received last year; he was also selected to be one of three Bank of America Chicago Distance Series Ambassadors. Day 240 Today's Reading: Revelation 2 Famed classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma was in a rush to get from one side of Manhattan to the other for a quick appearance. So rushed that when he arrived at his destination, he paid his driver, exited the cab, and forgot to take his cello with him. He'd placed the cello in the trunk of the taxi. And the cello was priceless: handcrafted by Antonio Stradivari in 1733 in Vienna, Austria, valued at $2.5 million. Frantic, Ma began a desperate search, eventually finding the cab later that day parked in a garage in Queens—with the cello still in the trunk. Wow, talk about leaving something priceless inadvertently. In today's chapter, though, a church is accused of something more devastating—leaving their first love. Revelation 2 and 3 are messages from Jesus to seven churches. Not every message is encouraging. In fact, they are convicting even two thousand years later. The first church God speaks to is the church of Ephesus: “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this: “I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you have perseverance and have endured for My name's sake, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” (Revelation 2:1-4) You have left your first love. A few years ago, I left my Kindle on a plane. I'd leaned it against the wall in the exit row by my seat. I was packing up my bag as we were landing and something said to me, Put that in your backpack. I didn't. I left a thousand books leaning against the wall of the plane. Let me be clear. I didn't lose it. I knew exactly where it was—seat 15C, flight #629 out of Atlanta. Lost has no idea where it is. Lost means it fell out of a pocket, a car, or a jacket. The church of Ephesus left something bigger and more massive than a thousand books. For all my life, I have heard the wrong word used in this verse, which makes all the difference about the church of Ephesus. It's a verse that if anyone has been in the church for any amount of time, they have probably said it, heard it, or even quoted it. I have always said, “You have lost your first love.” Not one version of the Bible puts “lost” in this verse. It is, “You have left.” Lost has the connotation of removing blame from the person, as in my “love for God” just got accidentally lost in the hustle and bustle of life. Let's be clear: Ephesus left it. Ephesus did not lose its first love. There is blame here. That's why they are not being challenged “to find it” but to repent for it. Repentance deals with responsibility. Ephesus is the only church to have two different apostles write letters to it. In the book of Ephesians, Paul offers two prayers for the church, that they might have more light and more love. This was one of the few places Paul stayed for a length of time (three years). The church of Ephesus was first pastored by Apollos. Timothy then became the pastor (the first epistle to Timothy was while he was pastoring the Ephesus church; see 1 Timothy 1:3). Later on, John pastored the church. It was while he was in Ephesus that John was exiled to Patmos. How do you lose your first love when your pastors were Apollos, Timothy, and John? How do you lose your first love when you had the apostle Paul hang with your church for three years? How do you lose your first love when you get two New Testament letters written to you? Two thoughts: First, Jesus says “you” left your first love. You means you have to take responsibility. It seems they fell in love with their successes and accomplishments—that's verses 2 and 3—but fell out of love with Jesus. This danger is subtle. What's interesting is that the apostle Paul warned the Ephesian people in Acts 20:28, “Be on guard for yourselves.” You, not demons, can be your worst enemy. Second, the word to leave is a process word. It means to let expire. We have to renew certain things—our driver's license, our insurance, subscriptions, etc. So too, our love for God will expire if we are not renewing it on a daily basis. On October 11, 1775, the whaling ship Herald was fishing just off Greenland when it spotted another ship. When it got closer, it saw that even though the ship was sailing, its sails were tattered and hanging limply on the masts. The captain ordered a few of his men to board the other ship. What they discovered shocked them. Everyone onboard the other ship, which they determined was the Octavius, a boat that had disappeared in 1761, was frozen to death. The ship had been sailing for fourteen years. Still moving, but no one alive. That's what happens when we keep doing things and let our love for Jesus expire. It wasn't renewed. It starts when our conversations with God reduce to being on a need-to-talk basis or a once-a-week basis. Time spent in prayer becomes based more on convenience. We will see God on Sunday but not any other day. My prayer is what Amy Carmichael prayed: “God hold us to that which drew us first, when the Cross was the attraction, and we wanted nothing else.”

Random Vegas The myth is that casino carpet is busy to keep guests looking at the slots. The fact is its to conceal stains as well as wear. (@VitalVegas) Twitpic of the week A breathtaking photo of @Caesars Palace from @maverickHeli. An arial view of the property showing just how diverse and sprawling the property is. This photo has it all, well, almost all. It has the 6 different hotel towers, the Roman, Centurion, Fantasy (known today as the Nobu tower), Palace, Augustus, and Octavius towers. It has the porte cochere and the famous fountains capped off by the Absinthe circus tent. While I've been assured this tent is a permanent structure, I can't help but wonder why Caesars didn't build them something more on brand. Perhaps the juxtaposition better suits the show's theme. Whatever the reason it's a marvelous photo and one I'm happy to add to the Twitpic of the week collection. In 2011, 17 year old Octavius Williams was at a Halloween party hosted by his father and his father's girlfriend in Cleveland, OH. Toward the end of the party a fight broke out in the backyard of the apartment building and Cole was shot. Cole survived, but suffered lower-body paralysis. Several witnesses said that Octavius' brother Ricky was the shooter. But Cole identified Octavius as the person who shot him. Despite Cole's account being the only one naming Octavius, Octavius was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
