Summer in 2025 is here - and after one of the sunniest and driest Springs on record, we enter the long days and sultry nights with the garden looking glorious but always looking to the horizon for a little bit of rain to keep things looking green and lush. Herbaceous borders are set to maximum colour, vegetable beds seem to multiply in growth weekly and the gardeners tan is ever present. So enjoy the long summer days, take some time to appreciate time in your garden and join the Talking Heads pair as they continue to look after the spaces they are in charge of, as well as enjoying their gardens at home. With Saul taking a well deserved break after our time at Audley End for the Gardeners' World Autumn Fair, Lucy lifts the lid on her latest crush (after eating some homegrown sweetcorn and tomatoes, of course - that's a life-long love). Yes, she's entered the world of tropical plants after Saul's persistent persuasions via 278 zoom calls, of 35-minute duration. Names trip off her lips such as coleus (plectranthus), ensete, amaranth, salvia, musa, fasicularia (and dahlia, Saul....) as she conveys what she's learnt on her journey so far. This is a regular complaint from gardeners: Lichen on the stems of our shrubs, trees and bark. In this case: Julie's treasured Magnolias. It kind of makes sense as the shrub or small tree often appears to have more lichen than leaves – mostly smallish buds, not large, impressive flowers. And few leaves that often look small and somewhat discoloured. No wonder gardeners are concerned about Lichen! Here are the identified species of lichen on our Magnolia: Cartilage Lichen and Common Sunburst Lichen. Lichen do not live in or from the plants – they don't invade the plants or steal nutrients, they just sit there on the branches in the sun. Often the more light or sun there is, the healthier the lichens are. Gardeners often think that the plants' lack of health is due to the presence of lichen but a far more accurate diagnosis is exactly the opposite. Shrubs and trees which are not in the most perfect place (with the best sun or shade) or with a minimal amount of healthy fertilisers or moisture are struggling to keep their growth rates in maximum condition. The lichen simply takes advantage of increased sun and light. Here is just one example that shows how lichen (in this case many different species) literally establish themselves on tiled roofs. The lichen do not have “roots” to get inside the tiles, or “feed” from the tiles. They therefore don't damage the surface they live on. Lichen is not a plant, but a symbiosis of two or three organisms that work together: fungi and blue-green algae (often Cyanobacteria) and yeasts. The fungus can store water for “the TEAM” and is the home of the algae. The algae can do photosynthesis and shares the sugars with the fungi. They all work together for the past 600 million years on Earth “WHEN LIFE CAME OUT OF THE OCEAN… THERE WAS LICHEN!” These lichen grow on metal, windscreen glass, and asphalt – known as Sexy Pavement Lichen. Kyle welcomes Tyler, also known as Base Forge, who is recognized for his unique perspectives on ancient knowledge and cyclical time. The conversation covers various intriguing topics, including Tyler's background in Kansas, his path towards spiritual awakening through ancient esoteric knowledge, and how he connected these ideas with his music career. The discussion delves into concepts of cyclical time, the Great Year, and different ages ranging from the Golden Age to the Iron Age. Tyler elaborates on his views regarding the advanced construction techniques and purposes of ancient megalithic structures, the significance of harmonics and sacred geometry, and how these structures may have been used for consciousness development rather than mere energy generation. The role of psychedelics, hermetic principles, and the importance of ritual and initiation in ancient cultures are also highlighted. Additionally, Tyler discusses his upcoming vision quest and the importance of responsible usage of psychedelics. The podcast underscores Tyler's mission to help people reconnect with the awe and beauty of existence through his teachings and community offerings. Congratulations, Gardeners! We've traveled from the Garden of Eden to Nehemiah and Ezra and the rebuilding of God's House. And now we enter a time that protestants have long referred to as the 400 years of silence. But God is not silent! Much is being written, much history is happening and it is critical that we know and understand this culture and this time because it sets the stage for Jesus. God is not silent - perhaps we have just not been taught how to listen.

Yes, her eyes were kept from the revealing of who it was she was talking with face to face. Yet I see something more. So many illustrations and visual depictions of what the resurrected Christ looked like all seem to be the same. I too have had the same thoughts of Him in brilliant shining garments 'other worldly,' glimmering in afterlife heavenly apparel. Like in the Mount of Transfiguration when, "He prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering." Luke 9:29.But that could not be the case here. Mary's eyes were withheld from seeing Him on purpose. "She knew not that it was Jesus." But she recognized Him as a gardener by what He was wearing. Gardeners during those days wore simple, practical clothing as other working-class people adapted for manual labor, which distinguished them from wealthy individuals. They wore a knee length tunic of two pieces sown together made of linen or wool. They wore a belt of cord or cloth, or leather to hold tools. They wore a heavy outer garment to protect them from the hot sun and weather, and simple leather sandals. The colors of the tunic were undyed natural earth colors like off whites, browns and grays. I believe that Jesus wanted it this way on purpose. Because though His work was done, our work is not. "In other words, "I am still working with you."These humble gardener's garments must be ours all the days of our lives as His laborers in the earth. So, we too will always be seen as the gardeners of the Lord...sowing seeds of eternal life and light.“I have one desire now - to live a life of reckless abandon for the Lord, putting all my energy and strength into it.”― Elisabeth Elliot, Through Gates of Splendor

Spring flowering bulbs are gardening's ultimate return on investment. Planted from September through November, these botanical powerhouses burst forth from winter's grip with waves of colour that evolve from the first snowdrops after Christmas through magnificent tulips and alliums in late May.What sets bulbs apart from other garden plants is their remarkable ability to naturalize—multiplying year after year with zero additional effort. Plant a single daffodil bulb this autumn, and next spring you'll have your first golden trumpet. By the following year, you might have two or three flowers, and within a few seasons, a magnificent clump that can be divided to spread beauty throughout your garden. The sheer versatility of spring bulbs makes them indispensable for gardeners of all experience levels. They thrive in sun or shade, containers or borders, under trees or naturalized in lawns. Their only nemesis is waterlogged soil, making proper drainage their sole critical requirement. Planting couldn't be simpler—just dig a hole roughly three times the bulb's depth, place it pointy-side up, and let nature handle the rest. For container gardeners, "lasagna planting" offers extraordinary value, creating months of continuous blooms from a single pot. By layering different varieties at varying depths—typically with late-flowering alliums or tulips at the bottom, mid-season daffodils in the middle, and early crocuses near the surface—you create a self-sustaining display that evolves from February through May.From dramatic alliums with their perfect spherical blooms to vibrant tulips, cheerful daffodils, delicate muscari, and unusual fritillaria, the diversity of spring bulbs offers something for every garden aesthetic. Whether you're seeking high-impact displays with colour-coordinated combinations or rare collector varieties with fascinating histories, autumn is the time to plan and plant.Don't miss this opportunity to create a self-perpetuating display that delivers maximum joy when gardens need it most. The bulbs you plant today truly represent gardening's highest impact for lowest input—they're the gift that keeps on giving for years to come. Ready to transform your spring garden? Well, strap in, because this week the tech world decided to set itself on fire just for kicks. First up, Elon Musk's much-hyped Tesla Diner in Los Angeles is already a culinary disaster, slashing its menu faster than you can say “over-promise and under-deliver.” Speaking of rolling garbage fires, the Cybertruck now apparently sounds like Fred Sanford's junk pickup rattling down the street, a fitting soundtrack for the ongoing dumpster fire that was Project 2025. Remember how that was supposed to save trillions? Turns out it was just a festival of bullshit math that likely cost taxpayers a fortune. It seems the only thing being successfully launched is our collective patience into the sun.The implosions continued with the launch of GPT-5, which effectively lobotomized its predecessor and sent thousands of users into mourning for their suddenly stupid digital "friends." It's a harsh lesson for anyone who thought building their business—or their entire social life—in someone else's backyard was a bright idea. While the normals are dealing with emotionally unavailable AI, the tech billionaires who broke the world are busy prepping for the collapse they engineered. Zuckerberg is building a $300 million apocalypse bunker in Hawaii, Sam Altman is stockpiling guns and gas masks, and Peter Thiel has his New Zealand hideout. It's comforting to know the architects of our dystopian future have their escape hatches ready. Meanwhile, Meta was caught with internal documents greenlighting its AI chatbots to have "sensual conversations" with kids, proving once again that when it comes to tech ethics, the call is coming from inside a burning, abandoned house. If you thought it couldn't get dumber, Musk and Altman got into a public slap-fight over who's more full of crap, with Musk's own AI, Grok, hilariously declaring its creator the loser. Google, admitting its search results are now a toxic sludge pile, has decided to just let users build their own news echo chambers. On a more nostalgic note, AOL Dial-Up is finally logging off for good, taking the screeching sound of our formative years with it. As we contemplate trading our devices for pitchforks, we're retreating to simpler times, like teaching our kids Solitaire with premium Star Wars playing cards (a concept apparently too advanced for Dave) or justifying dropping a cool grand on the new 9,000-piece Lego Death Star, which features a hot tub full of Stormtroopers in swim trunks. From a surprisingly decent Wicked movie adaptation to the sad, slow demise of Kodak, it's enough to make anyone want to become a Grumpy Old Gardener.Sponsors:Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Welcome back to the It's All Greek Retrospective series that contains previously aired short segments about gardening acronyms, jargon, and botanical nomenclature. In this third and last part of a series, Master Gardener Jean Thomas covers plants that have been named after people, a discussion about soil pH, and a range of acronyms. The first short segment covers the popularity of naming plants for people. It's been going on since people began naming plants at all, dating back to at least four centuries BC. Two causes are usually to blame; either the ego of the “discoverer” or the desire to flatter someone powerful. There are often great stories to uncover. One of the most interesting is the name of the Christmas standard, the Poinsettia (not poinTsettia). Dr, Joel Poinsett was the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and an avid plant collector. His life story is a colorful one, but the only reason anyone remembers his name is because of the seasonal flower. Actually, the history of the flower and its interaction with humans is equally interesting. Some other names every gardener is familiar with are: Forsyth because this gentleman (1737-1804) was a respected palace gardener in England and was honored with the name of the familiar Forsythia; Kasper Wister (died in 1818) was a famous botanist in Pennsylvania and honored with the name of the popular Wisteria. Wister and Forsyth were honored by the English botanist Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859), who spent over thirty years cataloging plants in the U.S., and had the power to assign formal names to plants. The familiar Magnolia x soulangeana was named by and for Pierre Magnol and m. Soulange-Boudin, and developed from two Chinese species. Many familiar shrubs bear the species names (like Sargentii( C.S. Sargent), Fortuneii (R. Fortune), Thunbergii ( Carl Peter Thunberg)), named for contemporaries and students of Linnaeus. Many plant and animal names honor the interesting Pere Armand David with the appelation “davidii.” The familiar Fuchsia (Dr. Fuchs) and Dahlia (Dr. Dahl) are good herbaceous examples. The large Lobelia group (415 species) was named by Linnaeus himself for Dr. Mathias De Lobile. The conversation then moves on to one of the great topics discussed by gardeners without a real understanding of the mechanism. The pH of soil is crucially important and measured and adjusted fanatically by gardeners. The way the chemistry works is described, starting with the litmus papers we dealt with in school science classes. Cations and anions are the active ions that determine how soil makes nutrition available to plants. A scale is used, with one end called acid and the other end called alkaline. The place on the scale tells the soil's description as to what kinds of nutrients are best assimilated. “Acid” soil is best for blueberries and Rhododendrons and “Alkaline” soil is better for Lilacs and Spirea. Gardeners assiduously “adjust” the soil with amendments like sulfur or wood ash, remembering that this takes several seasons to effect. Jean closes this segment with an aside about names where she wonders about Monkshood, Begonias and Darth Vader. The final segment moves on to acronyms, which translates to “names from the extremities.” It refers to new names for things created from the initials of word describing the things. Like Scuba, Laser, and Yahoo. There is also another related usage of initials called initialism, where the actual letters are sounded out, not merged into a new word. For instance, AT&T or DEC. Both of these practices are twentieth century phenomena. Further discussion of acronyms leads us to AVID, CRISP and PRISM, all popular programs in New York, devised by Cornell and the NY Department of Conservation. In a nutshell, the ideal acronym is an invented word that should either help recognize its subject or be catchy enough to be memorable and relatable to its subject. So enjoy the long summer days, take some time to appreciate time in your garden and join the Talking Heads pair as they continue to look after the spaces they are in charge of, as well as enjoying their gardens at home.Take a day out to spray weeds, and nobody will see any results instantly - but woe betide you if you neglect this essential job and customers consequently see a sea of fat hen (or, even worse, oxalis or creeping buttercup...) a week or so down the line. Juggling jobs is all part of the professional gardener's daily challenges, and understanding your clients' needs, along with good two-way communication, allows you to make sound decisions for all concerned. Plus, Saul has been spending more time in Stoneland's kitchen garden whereas Lucy has flexed her tropical muscles once again. In this podcast, Kyle interviews Dr. Bryan Artis, a retired chiropractor and author of 'Moving Beyond the COVID-19 Lies: Restoring Health and Hope for Humanity.' Dr. Artis discusses his controversial theory that COVID-19 and its long-term effects, as well as vaccine injuries, are linked to various venoms, including those from king cobras, crate snakes, and marine life, identified in patients' blood, urine, and feces. He recounts his journey from a personal tragedy involving his father-in-law, who died after being given a flu drug protocol in a Dallas hospital, to his extensive research into the true causes of COVID-19 symptoms and long COVID. Dr. Artis explains his findings about how nicotine receptors play a crucial role in combating long COVID and COVID vaccine injuries, referring to numerous studies supporting his theory. He emphasizes the effectiveness of nicotine patches in treating long COVID symptoms and urges people to seek natural remedies as effective solutions. Additionally, he highlights the pharmaceutical industry's role in controlling treatments and censoring alternative solutions that could offer relief without long-term dependencies on drugs. The podcast ends with a discussion on the future implications of his research, the pharmaceutical industry's influence, and the importance of staying informed and proactive about one's health. Dan Dagget was one of the original members of EarthFirst!, one of the more radical environmental activist organizations of the last 50 years. In his efforts to achieve health for the Earth's ecosystems, however, he found himself conflicted over environmentalism's means and the ends those means actually achieved. With that in mind, he began investigating and writing about success stories where active participation by humans in the ecosystems they depended on for livelihoods made the environment healthier than if they were not there. Two of his books, "Beyond the Rangeland Conflict" and "Gardeners of Eden - Rediscovering Our Importance to Nature" have thus been influential for many of us concerned about the serious environmental problems confronting the contemporary American West. The Art of Range Podcast is supported by the Idaho Rangeland Resources Commission; Vence, a subsidiary of Merck Animal Health; and the Western Extension Risk Management Education Center. Liz and Sarah discuss how writing the third draft of their pilot has made them realize there’s no right way to do something creative. There are MANY right ways. In Take Two, they revisit “whimsy” and share listener suggestions of whimsical items that bring joy. This week’s tip in The Craft (& Fain) makes a scene better AND shorter — lop off the first few lines and/or the last few lines. Then they share a summer travel Hollywood Hack: buy your airplane snacks before you go to the airport. Finally, Sarah recommends the Gardeners’ Question Time podcast from BBC Radio 4. This episode welcomes back Paul Check, a mentor and friend, who delves into a deep and comprehensive discussion on the nature of love, growth, and spiritual development. The conversation covers Paul's recent life experience of being bitten by a rattlesnake, which he uses to illustrate resilience and calm. Paul introduces his concept of the 'Spirit Gym,' a master system teaching about consciousness, life's purpose, and holistic growth through weekly sanghas and practical guidance. The discussion breaks down the symbolic 'OM' circle, highlighting the phases of awakening (awe), dreaming (ooh), and resting (mm), and connects these to seasons, stages of love, and archetypes such as the child, warrior, king/queen, and wise man/woman. Paul also discusses different types of love from sex and violence love to conditional and unconditional love, using relatable examples and spiritual beliefs. Furthermore, the podcast emphasizes the importance of understanding and integrating one's thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuition. The conversation ends with reflections on the illusion of separation from God and encourages holistic approaches to life and spiritual growth.
