Episode 656: Highlights From the Gardener's World Spring Fair

The veg grower podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2026 33:00

This week has been a little different here at the Veg Grower Podcast. While the allotment and kitchen garden have mostly seen me planting out the last of the season's young plants, the real highlight has been my annual trip to the Gardener's World Spring Fair at Beaulieu. It's a show I look forward to every single year, and once again it didn't disappoint. From catching up with friends like Aid Sellers and Lucy Chamberlain to exploring the inspiring show gardens and stalls, it was a day packed with ideas, conversations, and a good dose of gardening joy. Here's what I've been up to. Catching Up With Friends at the Show One of the things I love most about these events is the people. Gardeners often work alone in their plots, but shows like this remind us that we're part of a huge, enthusiastic community. I caught up with Ade Sellers, who was hosting the “In Conversation With” stage. Aid spoke passionately about the joy of seeing audiences engage with speakers — from seasoned growers to complete beginners. He described those moments when someone hears a single nugget of advice and you can almost see the lightbulb switch on. That's what these shows are all about. Later, I met up with Lucy Chamberlain, who, alongside De Graft, created the “Make a Metre Matter” garden. Divided into nine one‑metre squares, it showcased everything from punchy salad leaves to wildlife habitats, including a beautifully crafted hedgehog nest made entirely from natural, easy‑to‑source materials. Lucy's enthusiasm for small‑space growing was infectious — proof that even a single square metre can transform a space. A Picnic Worth Talking About Of course, no day out is complete without food, and this week's Recipe of the Week was designed with picnics in mind: a Spring Garden Quiche filled with asparagus, spring onions, herbs, and a creamy egg mixture. I cheated with shop‑bought pastry (don't judge!), but the result was delicious — perfect for eating on the lawn between exploring the gardens and stalls. The full recipe is on the website if you fancy giving it a go. Exploring the Show We arrived at Beaulieu just as the gates opened, with Amanda and Roxy joining me thanks to a mercifully cloudy forecast. The gardens were my first stop — they always are — and the designers had done a fantastic job. From wildlife‑friendly planting to clever small‑space ideas, there was plenty to take home and try. As always, I couldn't resist a bit of shopping. I came away with: Two bottles of Rudecello (rhubarb‑infused vodka — surprisingly good!) A few carnivorous plants to help with indoor pests Four young trees from Jurassic Plants: Two citrus A greengage A Chinese quince The afternoon brought rain, and the showground emptied almost instantly, but even that didn't dampen the mood. It was a brilliant day out — full of ideas, friendly faces, and that unmistakable buzz that only a gardening show can bring. Looking Ahead I'm already looking forward to Gardeners' World Live in June and Audley End in September, where Lucy will be creating another Make a Metre Matter garden. If you've never been to one of these shows, I can't recommend them enough. They're friendly, practical, and packed with inspiration for gardeners of all levels. If you were at the Spring Fair, I'd love to hear what you thought. And as always, if you enjoy the podcast, a rating or review helps more people discover the joy of growing their own food.

Due to climate change and unpredictable weather, gardeners should use a soil thermometer rather than specific dates to decide when to plant. Planting too early in cold soil can cause seeds and tubers to rot. Johnson says for early crops like peas and potatoes, mid-April is a general starting point in southern Wisconsin, provided the soil is warm enough. For warm-weather crops like tomatoes and peppers, wait until after May 20th and ensure soil is at least 60°F and nighttime air stays above 50°F.Unfortunatley there's another swath of wet weather moving toward Wisconsin. Stu Muck, ag meterologist, says western Wisconsin could pick up more than an inch of rain after a warm Thursday passes. Wisconsin potatoes are being featured at Walmart thanks to their "Healthy Grown" label. Andy Dierks, fourth generation potato farmer in Coloma tells Stephanie Hoff how it happened. Healthy Grown is now officially recognized by Walmart, meaning Wisconsin potato shippers who are certified automatically meet the retailer’s rigorous sustainability requirements. Members receive direct, one-on-one consulting with UW specialists to review herbicide and fungicide programs, helping manage resistance and environmental impacts. The program provides a unique safety net for navigating the Endangered Species Act, helping growers determine specific mitigation points and product choices for their specific acreage. Even farms without traditional "wild" land like streams or hunting grounds can qualify for ecosystem service credits through pollinator plantings and tailored conservation efforts. With a 30-year history, the program is successfully transitioning from Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to Regenerative Agriculture to meet the shifting demands of the global food industry. Sam Moheban, immigration specialist with Ruder Ware law firm in Wausau tells Pam Jahnke that there's some new direction he's seeing immigration reform. Moheban calls it "whole of government" approach. Now the federal government is focusing on enforcement of I-9 paperwork used by every employer in the United States to attest that employees can legally be employed. He says new guidelines allow federal officials to service notice of inspection via certified mail or personal service. No raids - just paperwork and potential fines. How many businesses do you work with that have been around for 50 years? In Wisconsin we talk a lot about generational farms, but what about the generational businesses that are part of the fabric that make agriculture's success. Cory Berg is the president and CEO of QLF. Quality Liquid Feeds, headquartered in Dodgeville, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. Berg tells Pam Jahnke about how his father sacrificed to start QLF. Today, although the company has a national footprint, it stays committed to keeping its headquarters in Dodgeville. Today, QLF is responsbile for buying around 70% of all the molasses produced in the state of Louisianna. That's supporting more than just Wisconsin farms.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some Wisconsin farm workers are already active! Stephanie Hoff finds out how the honeybee population has mobilized from Brooke Nikkila-Sommerfeldt, WI State Apiarist and Apiary Program Coordinator. During mid-to-late February, nearly every migratory commercial bee colony in the U.S. is located in California for almond pollination. Beyond the risk of "bee spills" (truck accidents), moving bees long distances can lead to hive suffocation or overheating due to improper ventilation. Placing bees in single-crop environments, like almond groves, can lead to nutritional deficiencies because the bees lack a diverse range of pollen and nectar. Much like wood ticks carry Lyme disease to humans, Varroa mites can vector over 20 different viruses to honeybees, including the virulent deformed wing virus. Exposure to pesticides—common near agriculture or golf courses—can lower a bee's immune system, making them more susceptible to viruses and mites. While small flowers are great, "big blooms" from trees and shrubs are particularly beneficial for honeybees because they provide a large amount of resources in one location. Wisconsin weather woes continue with more rain in the forecast, and cooling temperatures. Stu Muck explains that there's even a chance of snow for the weekend in some areas of the state. Gardeners are just as frustrated as farmers about the weather delay's we're working through. Kiley Allan talks with Scott Trudell who staffs the Plant Desk for The Bruce Company. While spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils are hardy enough to survive fluctuating temperatures, deciduous shrubs (such as lilacs and crab apples) are more vulnerable. If temperatures drop below the mid-20s, these should be covered with blankets or row covers to prevent damage. Trudell says greenhouse inventory is arriving earlier than usual this year, featuring cold-tolerant flowers like pansies, sweet alyssum, and the increasingly popular hellebores. Be patient. That's the advice Dr. Shawn Conley, UW-Madison Extension Soybean Specialist is sharing with farmers. Conley tells Pam Jahnke that with the high input costs operators are facing this year, the last thing you'll want to do is "mud in" the crop.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gafni defines Eros as radical aliveness desiring deeper contact and greater wholeness, a cosmic force uniquely moving through each person, and argues love is not merely emotion but a “perception-identification complex” in which one perceives another's irreducible quality/value and identifies their essence with that beauty rather than surface flaws. He critiques modern fast, negative, scandal-driven attention and “pornographic” surface gazing as anti-Eros, contrasting it with deep perception captured by Avatar's “I see you.” He says understanding love as perception makes it trainable, and extends the idea to orgasm as an illumination and affirmation of divine intimacy.    Connect with Marc here: Instagram   From Kyle: The Community is coming!
