This year, more voters than ever before will take part in national elections. At the same time, democratic norms and policies are under threat globally. Why is this happening, and what should be done about it? In a new episode of Talking Policy, host Lindsay Shingler talks with Dr. Pranab Bardhan, a distinguished professor emeritus of economics at UC Berkeley, about his book, A World of Insecurity: Democratic Disenchantment in Rich and Poor Countries. Bardhan shows that both cultural and economic insecurity are contributing to the trend of democratic backsliding, and offers perspectives on policies that would make citizens of democracies more secure while protecting the processes and norms of democratic governance. This interview was conducted on April 16, 2024. The transcript has been edited for length and clarity.

Soumia Bardhan is Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Colorado Denver. Operating at the transdisciplinary intersection of intercultural communication, global communication, and Islamic studies, she explores the complex ways diverse communication practices associated with Islam/Muslims shape MENA (Middle East and North Africa) culture and politics, challenge Islamophobia, facilitate the deliberative capacities of Muslim minority groups, and influence U.S. foreign policy. Her first monograph, on the digital rhetoric of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, is under contract with the University of Alabama Press. This book nuances how we understand the rhetoric of Islamism and challenges U.S./Euro-centric narratives of the relationship between (and future of) religion and politics in the MENA region. Soumia was awarded the University of Notre Dame's Global Religion and Research Initiative grant to develop an interdisciplinary course titled “Religion and Communication in the Middle East.” She teaches intercultural/critical intercultural communication; transnational rhetoric; religion, culture, and communication; gender, politics, and Islam; and directs Global Study courses focusing on Islam and intercultural dialogue in Spain, France, Morocco, and India. Professor Rao interviews Prof. Pranab Bardhan, Distinguished Professor, Emeritus, of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. Prof. Bardhan's new book, "A World of Insecurity: Democratic Disenchantment in Rich and Poor Countries", published by Harvard University Press this year, offers a nuanced analysis of the decay of democratic institutions and outlines concrete strategies for reversing this trend. He argues that insecurity, more than inequality, agitates people. It springs from many sources, such as state and market failures, a widespread resentment against the professional and cultural elites, and the anxiety of losing out.
Da Vinci Art Alliance (DVAA) was founded in 1931 by sixteen Italian immigrant artists and collectors at a time when immigrants were barred from major artistic, academic, and scientific institutions. DVAA was a creative refuge where members could show their works, hold meetings, engage in social activities, and offer intellectual and cultural exchanges and events. Together, they chose as their namesake the master of the Italian Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci. DVAA permanently moved to 704 Catharine St. in South Philadelphia in 1966. Since then, the building has housed artist studios and exhibitions annually. In 2015, DVAA hired its first full-time Executive Director to improve the Artist Membership program. DVAA's Artist Membership program now offers several annual exhibition opportunities for artists and critically engaged programs monthly. To build community within Philadelphia, DVAA has created a Fellowship program for underserved artists, designed an annual community art and science festival called Da Vinci Fest, and installed a permanent mural on our building.DVAA is housed in a rowhome in the Bella Vista area of South Philadelphia. In an essay by Ricki Sablove they speak about our neighborhood as a part of Philadelphia “that sparkles with the history of its people--a history rich with the music of opera and organ grinders, redolent with the wonderful aromas of Italian cooking, and alive with the dialects brought from faraway places.” Read more about our vibrant neighborhood here. “Extra-Human: The Art of Michael Ferris” features larger-than-life figurative sculptures that Ferris created by fusing reclaimed discarded wood and pigmented grout through environmentally-conscious methods. The exhibition embodies a rich diffusion of cultural and artistic traditions and celebrates people's heroism in our everyday lives. Originally trained as a painter, Ferris embraced sculpture 25 years ago and developed an inlay technique of his own making, inspired by intarsia woodworking familiar to his Middle-Eastern heritage. Ferris enlists his self-invented mosaic design to enliven finely carved portraits of family and friends, capturing the subject's inner life through subtly choreographed patterning. This merger of realism and decorative splendor fulfills the artist's aim to highlight both a person's psychological and spiritual complexities. Michael Ferris's work has been exhibited widely throughout the nation at notable institutions including the Elmhurst Art Museum in Illinois; The Bronx Museum in New York; The Queens Museum of Art in New York; ATM Gallery in New York; Katonah Art Museum in New York; de Young Museum in San Francisco, California; and The Illinois State Museums in Illinois. He has received awards from numerous organizations including the New York Foundation for the Arts (2009), The George Sugarman Foundation (2005), and the American Craft Council (2002). Ferris's work can be found in public collections at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, CA; Illinois State Museum in Springfield, IL; and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AR. His exhibitions have been featured in The New York Times, The New York Daily News, and The Chicago Tribune.Guest-curated by art historian Suzanne Ramljak, the collection will display a dozen of Ferris's distinctive wood sculptures, related drawings, and painted portraits set in intricately inlaid frames. The exhibition will be available to view from November 5, 2021, through April 24, 2022 at The Center for Art in Wood, 141 N 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.FOR MORE INFORMATION: https://centerforartinwood.org/exhibition/extra-human-the-art-of-michael-ferris/

OLD CITY JEWISH ARTS CENTER Presents: A Golem Sleeps and Wakes in the Mourning WHERE: Old City Jewish Arts Center, 119 N. 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA WHEN: Opening is First Friday, June 4th, 2021 from 5:00pm - 9:00pm.Gallery open Thursdays 4pm - 8pm, Fridays 11am - 5pm, Saturdays 11am - 8pm, and Sundays 11:00am - 5:00pm and by appointment through July 2nd. Live gallery performances and artist talk on the evenings of Friday June 25th and July 2nd. Artist talks at 6pm, and Performances at 5:30pm and 7pm. An interactive exhibit of images, objects, video, and live performance from the theatrical practice of Logan Gabrielle Schulman and Benjamin Behrend will be presented at the Old City Jewish Arts Center (OCJAC) throughout June, and opens the First Friday of June (6/4) at 5pm. It features filmed performances and multimedia art objects from “the theatre of grief,” a series of four theatrical works created over the last three years in the wake of the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting in Pittsburgh, PA in 2018. Additionally, OCJAC is ecstatic to present an original performance adapted from rituals within Schulman and Behrend's theatrical practice over four showings, two per night, on Friday June 25th and July 2nd at 5:30pm and 7pm, featuring live musical accompaniment, dance, and puppetry. Between the two performances, at 6pm, there will be a conversation with the performer, artists Schulman and Behrend, and Aleida Garcia, a Philadelphia community leader, victim advocate, and the founder of the National Homicide Justice Alliance. In describing their aims, Schulman said they hope that their works function to both encourage active reflection in the viewer, as well as activate them to move towards justice and common sense gun legislation. “Sadly, gun violence has become so widespread and commonplace in the U.S. that it is almost too easy for someone to move on with their day after learning of an instance of violence,” says Schulman. “These performances and associated visual works seek to force the audience to reckon with the ripple-effect of each and every single loss — how a single family's existence is irrevocably upended at the loss of a child.” Schulman and Behrend's work prominently features the Golem, a mythical earthen creature from Jewish folk mythology, traditionally understood to be a protector of a persecuted people. In their contemporary take on the fable, “we see the Golem as a failed attempt at solving the problem of violence; what good is a clay hero against a bullet? What good is an old protector against a modern monstrosity?” asks Behrend. In their canon of works, the Golem has been relegated as a shepherd of lost souls, reassigned by G-d to live out the rest of its days in Sheol, the place where the lost souls of the dead are sent, in order to grieve for all the lives it couldn't save.
Moses and Kitch stand around on the corner – talking shit, passing the time, and hoping that maybe today will be different. As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Award-winning playwright Antoinette Nwandu purposely crafts language that many deem “profane” into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the enduring human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle looking for a way out. A provocative riff on Waiting for Godot, Pass Over is a timely tale told by a bold American voice.FOR TICKETS AND INFORMATION: http://theatreexile.org
