In our first nine episodes of Show Us Your Portfolio, we spoke to some great investors and looked at some really interesting investment approaches. But one thing we noticed about all of those episodes is that they featured investors who were further along in their investing journeys. So we wanted to talk to someone who is earlier in the process and utilizes a thoughtful approach to growing their portfolio over the long-term. In this episode, we talk with Alpha Architect Head of Capital Markets Ryan Kirlin about how he thinks about building his personal portfolio. We discuss how he utilizes factors and trend following in his investment strategy, how he chooses the investment vehicle for his portfolio, his thoughts on bonds and crypto and a lot more. We hope you enjoy the discussion.
In today's episode Nicholas Ryder speaks with Ryan Kirlin of Alpha Architect. As the Head of Capital Markets and Sales for Alpha Architect, Ryan has a breadth of knowledge on how markets work and the things we, as investors, take for granted. In this episode Nicholas and Ryan dive deep into the benefits of using exchange traded funds (ETFs) for a portion of investment portfolios. Ryan shares the three biggest reasons he believes investors should use them: taxes, costs, and transparency. Please send in feedback and any topic or questions you would like us to cover. Email Us.
Will advisors continue to use mutual funds and if so, why? In this episode of Talkin' Shop, Ryan Kirlin and Andrew Miller, CFP®, CFA® join me for a post-workout conversation about ETFs and mutual funds answering this question, along with new concerns or areas to be aware of within ETFs, with why the ETF culture is more favorable to investors, and why a strong and respected brand is so valuable.

Ryan Kirlin and Dr. Jack Vogel discuss three articles published on our blog this week. First, we examine a summary by Larry Swedroe that highlights the Betting Against Beta (BAB) factor and dives into two new papers examining when the BAB factor performs well. Second, we discuss a paper titled “The Conservative Formula: Quantitative Investing Made Easy” which uses three well-known factors, (1) low volatility, (2) price momentum, and (3) payout-yield to form a 100 stock portfolio. Last, we examine a paper titled “What’s in Your Benchmark? A Factor Analysis of Major Market Indexes” authored by the BlackRock, Inc. team–they examine common market-capitalization weighted portfolios and break them down into their factor allocations using long-only and investable (1) Value, (2) Momentum, (3) Quality, (4) Size, and (5) Low Volatility portfolios.
