In this episode we answer emails from Katie, Sean, Glen, Anonymous and Kelly. We discuss our matching campaign for the Father McKenna Center (rolled out in Episode 426), the BOXX ETF and the Rorschach test it presents, direct indexing, Risk Parity Chronicles, and the real purpose of Financial Independence and how to win at retirement and life. Financial independence isn't the finish line—it's the starting point of a more meaningful journey. In this deeply personal episode, Frank Vasquez tackles sophisticated investment strategies while unveiling the philosophical underpinnings of his approach to wealth. He examines the tax-efficient BOXX ETF, explaining how it allows investors in higher tax brackets to potentially convert ordinary income into more favorable long-term capital gains. Drawing on insights from Alpha Architect's Wes Gray, Frank positions this strategy within the evolving landscape of personal finance technology, contrasting innovators against those clinging to outdated viewpoints. The conversation shifts to direct indexing—a strategy where investors replicate indices by purchasing individual securities rather than funds. Frank cuts through the marketing hype, offering practical guidance on when this approach makes sense (primarily for those in higher tax brackets) and when it's simply not worth the complexity. His personal experience with property and casualty insurance companies demonstrates selective implementation without paying unnecessary fees. Most powerfully, Frank shares the story that shaped his retirement philosophy—his aunt Sister Francine of the Sisters of Mercy. This "firebrand and hellraiser" ran schools and soup kitchens, challenged the wealthy to contribute more, and built deep community connections. When she died without money or fame, her funeral filled a cathedral with mourners—the ultimate testament to a life well-lived.What's the purpose of saving all that money if not to create meaningful impact? How might your financial independence serve something greater than account balances? Listen and reconsider what truly constitutes "winning at life."Support the show

Jason Hartman is joined by Wesley Gray, CEO of Alpha Architect for a fascinating discussion on inflation hedges and future scenarios for commodities and crypto. How should we allocate risk right now? Why is crypto performing so poorly? Are we truly becoming a Banana Republic that does not end well? Jason and Wesley discuss a few things that you should always consider including keeping your tax rates down as much as possible. Fees and taxes are things you can often control, whereas we can't control what the economy or inflation is going to do. And why is crypto doing so poorly when it should, at least in theory, be the inflation hedge asset? Where's Michael Saylor? Isn't Bitcoin digital gold? Without a military behind it, will cryptocurrencies ever be truly viable? BIO: Larry Swedroe is head of financial and economic research at Buckingham Wealth Partners.STORY: Larry chose to invest in an individual bank stock in the mid-80s instead of following his gut to invest in a portfolio of stocks. The bank's President committed fraud, and the company went bankrupt. Larry lost about 80% of his investment.LEARNING: Avoid idiosyncratic risks by hyper-diversifying your portfolio. “Focus on managing risks and not trying to generate alpha or risk-adjusted outperformance.”Larry Swedroe Guest profileLarry Swedroe is head of financial and economic research at Buckingham Wealth Partners. Since joining the firm in 1996, Larry has spent his time, talent, and energy educating investors on the benefits of evidence-based investing with enthusiasm few can match.Larry was among the first authors to publish a book that explained the science of investing in layman's terms, “The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You'll Ever Need.” He has authored or co-authored 18 books.Larry's dedication to helping others has made him a sought-after national speaker. He has made appearances on national television on various outlets.Larry is a prolific writer, regularly contributing to multiple outlets, including AlphaArchitect, Advisor Perspectives, and Wealth Management.Worst investment everIn the mid-80s, while Larry was working at Citicorp as the regional treasurer on the West Coast, his colleague and friend convinced him to invest in a company called Jefferson National Bank. Larry happened to believe in two themes that were behind his friend's recommendation. One, this was a small regional bank, and Larry was confident that the US would allow consolidation to build national banks. So there was going to be a trend of purchasing well-run small banks at premiums to enable the big banks to become national. Two, the bank was located on the border between Canada and upstate New York. There was a military base with a good, sound community, making it suitable for businesses. Larry also believed NAFTA would pass, which would build up the trade in the area.Larry then called a bunch of friends in the banking business and asked them what they thought of this company. Most were impressed by how well the bank was run and the good earnings. Everything seemed suitable for an investor. The President of the bank committed fraud, and the company went bankrupt. Larry lost about 80% of his investment.Looking at hindsight, Larry could have made a much more intelligent bet by avoiding idiosyncratic risks. He could have found a collection of regional stocks with the same advantages as the bank he invested in but without the idiosyncratic risk.Lessons learnedLarry has, over time, developed three principles of investing:Principle one: If the markets are sufficiently efficient, invest in systematic, transparent, rapidly run funds that try to keep their trading costs down with patient...
This week's guest is Perth Tolle, the founder of Life + Liberty Indexes and creator of the Freedom 100 EM Index (FRDM index). This freedom-weighted equity strategy is the first of its kind and uses personal and economic freedom metrics as primary factors in its investment process. Doug and Greg chat with Perth about how/why she came up with the ETF, how the strategy performs vs. the market cap-weighted benchmarks, the risks of autocracies, China's role/exposure, ESG, and more. So not only do we want to exclude the autocracies and stay away from that autocracy risk, but we want to give a higher weight to freer markets, which we think are launch paths for the growth stories of the next decade.” - Perth Tolle [17:28] - “If you're looking at these index providers putting between 20 and 40% of an allocation to a single country that's ranking near the bottom from a freedom perspective…that seems like a pretty high risk to me.” - Doug Stokes Links Perth Tolle Life + Liberty Indexes The Freedom 100 Emerging Markets ETF (FRDM) China's 1 Child Policy Cato Institute Fraser Institute Human Freedom Index & Data Set Alpha Architect Dr. Wes Gray Connect with our hosts Doug Stokes Greg Stokes Stokes Family Office Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts lagniappe.stokesfamilyoffice.com Disclosure The information in this podcast is educational and general in nature and does not take into consideration the listener's personal circumstances. Got an idea for an exchange-traded fund but don't want to deal with the logistics? A group of “white label” ETF issuers are in the business of helping people launch their own fund—and business is booming. These issuers have minted more than 100 ETFs this way—for both big asset managers and entrepreneurial individuals simply passionate about an idea. On this week's episode of Trillions, we speak to the “big three” of ETF white labels: Garrett Stevens, chief executive of Exchange Traded Concepts, Mike Venuto, chief information officer and co-founder of Tidal, and Wes Gray, president of Alpha Architect. Topics include how they got started, how they vet new ideas, the launch of which they're most proud and what next year holds. The last includes Goldman Sachs Group's entry into the business and a potential wave of mutual fund to ETF conversions.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There's no one predefined path that will lead us through the challenges and heartbreaks that we all face in life. Often times the best that we can do is learn to accept and explore our emotions while remaining open to the opportunities in front of us. That willingness to explore and grow can help us heal, and help us redefine who we are going forward. In today's adventure episode, I talk to Jess Bost, VP – Brand Partnerships at Alpha Architect, a research-intensive asset management firm. Jess is also the host of The Breakthrough Factor podcast, a CrossFit coach, and an Olympic weightlifter. Jess was in a "dark night of the soul" place due to personal trauma and she shares with me, in raw, real terms, her journey of personal and professional self-discovery that brought her to a place of strength where she now coaches others who want to make major life changes and plan for a successful future. As I said to her during the show, what she shares is "a gift" to those who listen. Don't miss it.

Welcome to The Creating Wealth Show where rents in suburbia are higher than rents in cities and the Fed wants to see you unemployed! Think we're kidding, right? Think again! You couldn't make up fiction this good if you tried! Jason Hartman takes you through the latest news stories and predictions affecting the economy and is joined by Wesley Gray, CEO of Alpha Architect for a fascinating discussion on inflation hedges and future scenarios for commodities and crypto. Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported over 200K new jobs were added in September. Sounds like great news for the economy and people in general, right? Strangely, it runs directly counter to what the Federal Reserve wants to see; they don't want to see the unemployment rate fall, they don't want to see you have a job. They want to see you unemployed. That low unemployment rate has to be driving the Fed nuts! Americans working and spending money is something they don't want to see, as they have forecasted a recession next year, and are looking for the unemployment rate to reach 4.4%. Today we welcome Jess Bost In The Suite, Vice President of Brand Partnerships at Alpha Architect and part-time CrossFit coach. Today's podcast begins with Jess explaining how she got into CrossFit. While Jess graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree from Berry College, she found CrossFit during a traumatic time in her life. She was forty pounds overweight, and running in her asthmatic condition wasn't helping her get out of her depressive phase. When she joined CrossFit classes, it transformed her life. It kept her physically healthy and mentally strong. She felt empowered, and sports became her bridge to healing. Her competitive nature and love for sports have led her to manage various CrossFit gyms, achieve multiple CrossFit certificates, and a national title in Olympic weightlifting in 2017! She was also qualified for the Masters Pan-AM in 2018. Jess' life changed when she moved with her husband and two children to Augusta. Her husband lost his job, and she had to become the family's breadwinner. Her circumstances, combined with her passion for helping people "get from where they were to where they want to be," which CrossFit did for her, led her to the world of Finance. She was happy to learn that Finance was more than math and statistics. It can involve relationship building too! During the pandemic, she took the leap of faith when she changed companies and roles to become the new VP of Brand partnerships for Alpha Architect – an opportunity she found on social media! Jess has achieved series 65 and 63 licenses, qualifying her as a securities agent and investment advisor representative. Her belief that fitness and wealth management share the same principles has become an indivisible part of her focus and legacy. With more than 12 years of personal training experience and four years in the wealth management industry, Jess is passionate about being an advocate for other women, including her two daughters. To extend her goal, she's started her podcast, "The Breakthrough Factor," where she interviews professionals and athletes to learn how they overcome barriers to build their fitness and finances. The ability to act bold, especially in our careers is a recurring theme in today's episode. Join the conversation and learn about important life lessons we are often taught too late. Below is the agenda: Welcome, Jess!(03:00) Being a CrossFit Coach for 12 years(08:00) Is CrossFit for those over 50?(12:35) "Progress. Is. Not. Wes Gray is a man of many talents. He was a Captain in US Marine Corp, has a PhD in Finance and Univ of Chicago, and now run Alpha Architect. We discuss a lot of areas on this episode. I know you will enjoy it. We discuss the value of using common sense with the quant approach, whether Value investing is making a come back ( I like this one), poor man's managed futures, the biggest risks right now, when to use discretion, inflation protection, and more. After spending years going through a tough academic program, one dissertation away from achieving a degree, Wes Gray chose to take a step back and join the Marine Corps. Following five years of service, Wes finished his degree at The University of Chicago, studying under the acclaimed Eugene Fama. While working as a professor, a cold call from a billionaire in New York prompted Wes to begin moonlighting as an internal due diligence agent. That decision to take on a second job became his inspiration for Alpha Architect – an asset management firm committed to empowering investors through education. In this episode, Wes talks with Doug and Greg about why Alpha Architect is abnormal, the method to their madness, how Wes challenged Eugene Fama (and nearly won), how Alpha Architect is responding to today's volatile markets, and what the future looks like for value investors. Key Takeaways [01:24] - How Wes transitioned from professor to founder of Alpha Architect. [04:50] - Why Wes' studies led him to be more of a quant than a discretionary investor. [14:00] - Has a rise in awareness diluted investors' ability to obtain Alpha? [19:25] - How Wes explains the recent market volatility. [22:40] - How Alpha Architect responds to “flows” and market volatility. [26:23] - How Alpha Architect remains tax-efficient. [29:37] - What Wes believes the future looks like for value investors. Quotes [27:14] - “One of the problems with the financial services industry is, the best idea, the best strategy in the world, can always be ruined by fees and taxes. And so, you can have a lot of excess returns, but if you give it all up in fees and taxes, what was the point?” ~ Wes Gray [31:08] - “No matter how you cut it, the valuation of value stocks is the cheapest it's ever been relative to the valuation of the market or gross stocks more particularly. And so the problem is timing. I have to survive the potential issue of, I go buy value stocks and then all the sudden all the crazy maniac stocks beat me and crush my soul by ten percent a year for the next ten years again.” ~ Wes Gray [31:57] - “The problem is, if there is a risk that you give up on fundamentals and the weighing machine in the short run, that means you will not get to extract the benefits of the long run. And I always tell people, you really need to sit down and think about your own brain psychology, and if you can't deal with the heat in the kitchen, get out of the kitchen and just go buy the Vanguard fund.” ~ Wes Gray Links Wes Gray Alpha Architect Eugene Fama The University of Chicago Drexel University Embedded Quantitative Value DIY Financial Advisor Quantitative Momentum Warren Buffett Robinhood Vanguard iShares Seth Klarman Tesla BlackRock Cliff Asness: Still Crazy After All This YTD Connect with our hosts Doug Stokes Greg Stokes Stokes Family Office Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts lagniappe.stokesfamilyoffice.com Disclosure The information in this podcast is educational and general in nature and does not take into consideration the listener's personal circumstances. All About ESG. That is, investing based on environmental, societal, and governance criteria, and it's exploding. ESG has taken over from SRI, or socially responsible investing, and interested investors need to understand both impact investing and sustainable investing. But there's a new book out by Sam Adams and Larry Swedroe that does a fantastic job bringing it all together. After going over some current activity on ESG on social media from Cliff Asness, Alpha Architect, and William Green's podcast, as well as a clip from the KTDpodinterview with Robin Wigglesworth, we get into an abbreviated discussion with Sam and Larry about their book. The complete interview is available on New Books Network. The new book is the Essential Guide to Sustainable Investing: How to Live Your Values and Achieve Your Financial Goals with ESG, SRI, and Impact Investing, can be purchased here. Larry has written a bunch of other books, and currently writes three newsletters for Evidence Based Investor, AlphaArchitect, and Advisor Prospectives. Sam can be followed on the website for his company Vert Asset Management, as well as Linkedin. I referenced two papers from AQR that can be found here from 2017, and more recently on shorting here, and check out William Green's Meet the Masters interview with Aswath Damodaran through We Study Billionaires – The Investors Podcast Network. Here's a link to the paper on returns and momentum in ESG rankings called Sustainable Investment – Exploring the Linkage between Alpha, ESG, and SDGs. KTDpod is also available on Amazon, Apple, Spotify, Google and Stitcher. Here is a direct link to the Robin Wigglesworth interview. Follow Robin on Twitter and Linkedin, and buy his book Trillions, you won't be disappointed. Follow KTDpod on Twitter & Linkedin as well. Sam and Larry's book talks about Iroquois Valley Farms, but you can learn more about the private REIT on the IVF website. #ESG #SRI #LarrySwedroe #SamuelAdams #VertAsset #RobinWigglesworth #AQR #CliffAsness #WilliamGreen
