Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

GREASE - was a pop culture musical phenomenon that took the world by storm and become a right of passage for any child in the 80s and beyond. The Born to Watch team tackles this classic and hand jive all the way to Graduation.Released over four decades ago, "Grease" (1978) remains an iconic and beloved musical that continues to captivate audiences of all ages with its infectious energy, memorable tunes, and timeless themes. Directed by Randal Kleiser and based on the 1971 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the film has solidified its place in cinematic history as a quintessential representation of 1950s nostalgia, high school romance, and the power of self-discovery. From its catchy melodies to its vibrant choreography, "Grease" radiates a distinct charm that has stood the test of time.Set in the summer of 1959, "Grease" follows the whirlwind romance between Danny Zuko (John Travolta), a leather-clad bad boy with a heart of gold, and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John), a wholesome Australian exchange student. After a chance encounter during their summer break, the couple faces the challenges of navigating the social dynamics of Rydell High School upon their unexpected reunion. Danny's tough-guy reputation clashes with Sandy's good-girl image, setting the stage for a delightful exploration of teenage identity, peer pressure, and the transformative power of love.At its core, "Grease" is a celebration of youthful exuberance and the trials and tribulations of teenage life. The film expertly captures the spirit of the 1950s, from the fashion and music to the burgeoning cultural shifts of the era. The lively musical numbers, including classics like "Summer Nights," "You're the One That I Want," and "Greased Lightnin'," are not only irresistibly catchy but also serve as windows into the characters' emotions and desires. The soundtrack's timeless appeal is a testament to its enduring popularity, with audiences across generations still tapping their feet and singing along.John Travolta's charismatic portrayal of Danny Zuko is a highlight of the film, as he effortlessly embodies the role of the lovable rebel torn between maintaining his tough image and pursuing genuine love. Olivia Newton-John's performance as Sandy is equally captivating, as she transitions from the demure, naive newcomer to a confident young woman unafraid to express her true self. The chemistry between Travolta and Newton-John is palpable, lending authenticity to their characters' emotional journey and making their on-screen romance all the more believable. The supporting cast adds depth and humor to the story, with standout performances from Stockard Channing as the sassy and rebellious Rizzo, Jeff Conaway as Danny's loyal friend Kenickie, and Didi Conn as the quirky and endearing Frenchy. Each character brings a unique flavor to the narrative, showcasing the diversity of personalities that make up the high school experience.Randal Kleiser's direction brings a visually vibrant and energetic atmosphere to "Grease." The film's iconic dance sequences, choreographed by Patricia Birch, are a sight to behold, combining slick moves and exuberant choreography that perfectly complement the film's lively musical numbers. The high-energy dance-off at the school carnival and the electrifying hand jive scene are just a few examples of the film's memorable moments that have become ingrained in popular culture.Beyond the catchy tunes and lively performances, "Grease" delves into relatable themes of self-acceptance and the challenges of finding one's identity in the face of societal expectations. The characters' struggles to fit in, overcome peer pressure, and forge genuine connections remain relevant to audiences today. The film's ultimate message of embracing one's true self and following one's heart resonates across generations, reminding viewers that authenticity and self-discovery are timeless pursuits. However, it's important to acknowledge that "Grease" has faced criticism for its portrayal of certain gender dynamics and its lack of diversity. The film primarily revolves around heterosexual relationships and conforms to traditional gender roles, which may be at odds with contemporary sensibilities. Moreover, the absence of racial diversity within the main cast and the predominantly white portrayal of a high school in the 1950s overlooks the multicultural reality of American schools during that period. In conclusion, "Grease" (1978) remains a cinematic gem that continues to shine brightly in the pantheon of musicals. Its infectious energy, unforgettable characters, and timeless themes make it a perennial favorite that has earned its place in the hearts of audiences worldwide. While it may not be without its flaws, the film's enduring charm, catchy music, and vibrant dance sequences ensure that it will remain a beloved classic for generations to come. "Grease" transports us back to a simpler time while reminding us that the journey of self-discovery and love is a universal and everlasting one. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Join host Elias in the cave as he sits down with multi-talented artist Jason Schmidt. Jason is an accomplished actor and singer-songwriter who has recently taken on the role of Buddy in Paramount+'s new musical series, Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies. In this highly-anticipated prequel to the classic movie musical, Grease, viewers follow the story of the four founders of the legendary "pink ladies" and their quest to have fun on their own terms. Jason shares his experiences of portraying Buddy, his journey as an actor and musician, and his insights into the making of this exciting new series. Tune in to hear about the show's unique approach to storytelling and the moral panic it sparks at Rydell High. In the series, Buddy is portrayed as the quintessential golden boy of Rydell High School. He is the star quarterback of the football team, the current student body president, and the most popular person in the school. Buddy's privileged status has blinded him to the problems faced by his less fortunate friends and peers, and he has a naive and idealistic view of the world. As the series progresses, Buddy begins to confront certain truths about the school's social hierarchy, including the discrimination and prejudice faced by some students. These realizations leave him at a crossroads, and he must decide whether to maintain the status quo or to use his position of influence to effect change and fight for the rights of those who are marginalized. The series explores themes of privilege, power, and the responsibility that comes with them, and follows Buddy's journey as he grapples with these issues and decides who he wants to be. Hello everyone! Today's podcast is another in my "It's a Love Story” series, sponsored by my book of the same name, which celebrates four years of existence this month. What in the world? We've done 21 of these episodes, and traditionally, when we come up with a quintessential love story, something a little more mainstream than Grease 2 comes to mind. I imagine the majority of you haven't even seen Grease 2, let alone knew it existed. I'd like to take this time to plead my case. Just listen to this synopsis: Stephanie Zinone is the leader of Rydell High School's Pink Ladies, a gang of girls who are counterparts of the school's group of greasers called the T-Birds. Stephanie is tired of her relationship with top T-Bird Johnny Nogerelli, so she breaks up with him and quickly catches the eye of English exchange student Michael Carrington. Hoping to win her over, Michael tries to overcome his nerdy ways while holding off the jealous Johnny. Grease 2 taught us that brainy students who know Shakespeare can also be cool riders. We learned that high school talent shows in the 60s had legitimate production value, and anyone can learn the ins and outs of reproduction through the magic of song and dance. It was fun AND educational. EPISODE NOTES: HERE is an oral history of how Grease 2 became a cult classic. Interested in the bowling scene?? Click HERE! Interested in "Girl For All Seasons?" Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

When it comes to cult musicals, we typically think of Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors, & This Is Spinal Tap. However, a little film about the T-Birds, Pink Ladies, and overt references to sexual intercourse has quietly become a new generational cult movie. No...not that Grease, we're talking about Grease 2! Listener Mike from Norfolk is part of that new Rydell High School crew that stopped hand-jiving and started bowling. He even went so far as to build a replica of the "Cool Rider's" Honda Scrambler. It was fate that he commission Shat The Movies to review his favorite obsession. Fellow Grease 2 enthusiast, Ashley Schlafly joins Roger & Big D to debate whether the sequel is better than the original. Ash swoons over the empowering female character of Stephanie, while Big D explains the rules of being a Pink Lady. Rog discounts Ash's favorite song as nothing more than a B-Side recording from Meatloaf. All three hosts cringe during the "Let's Do It For Our Country" performance. So, put on a leather jacket without a shirt underneath and get ready to jump the luau pool. It's the latest episode of STM. Rydell High, that is – the name of the school where Danny Zuko and Sandy reunite, where the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies rule the roost. As many times I have watched that movie over the years, it never clicked that calling the fictional institution “Rydell High School” was a tribute to America’s most famous Rydell – Bobby. BOBBY RYDELL podcast excerpt: "When I was with Mr. Sinatra at the Copacabana for the first time and he said, 'What do you drink, Robert?' I said, 'C-C-Coke.' I figured if I said, 'Scotch and water,' I'd get smacked in the face, y'know?" Pretty cool – even if it was his pal Frankie Avalon who played the film’s Teen Angel, not him. After all, South Philly’s gift to teen pop and adult cool, Bobby Rydell, has enjoyed more than his share of fame and fortune. There were the hits, none bigger than “Volare.” And, of course, co-starring in the film version of Bye Bye Birdie with Dick Van Dyke and Ann-Margaret.
