Today on the 5: I haven't watched the 1984 film Streets Of Fire since the early days of the show before we really did movie reviews. Lando had never seen it, so we watch it as our movie selection for the Friday show. Streets Of Fire is a fun film, but it has one major flaw that holds it back from being as good as it could have been.

Welcome to another episode of I'll Show You Mine! It's April again and that means it's time for our topsy turvy switcharoo episodes! This year, James is showing Elyse ‘Streets of Fire' from 1984. A “Rock and Roll Fable” directed and co-written by 48 Hrs and The Warriors director Walter Hill, ‘Streets of Fire' tells the story of Tom Cody, a rough-and-tumble tough guy who heads back to his hometown when his ex-girlfriend, rockstar Ellen Aim, is kidnapped by bad guy biker Raven Shaddock and his gang, the Bombers. The movie is often cited as an inspiration for beat-em-up arcade games of the late 80s/early 90s, which is how it ended up on James' radar.Join us as we talk about the killer soundtrack, the cast of stars in the very early stages of their careers, and the rain-slick, neon-lit streets of “Another Time, Another Place…”Our theme song is by us! Another time, another place. That time? 1984. That place? The movies! Where a rock & roll fable was born, yet no one watched it at the time. In America, anyway. In Japan, someone saw it. A few someones. A few someones, that would go on to make some of the coolest anime and video games around. Now, in 2025? It's the perfect time to go back to that another time, and another place. The cast is stacked with a young Diane Lane and maniacal looking Willem Dafoe. The hero, Michael Pare looks Hero-Like with his smoldering good looks, motorcycle riding, shotgun toting aesthetic. So this is going to be very good or very bad and we can't wait. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Grease up your pompadours and get your switchblades ready. This week we're taking a look at Walter Hill's 1984 rock and roll fable, Streets of Fire. Coming in hot off the back of the 1982 smash hit buddy cop picture, 48 Hours, Hill and co-writer Larry Gross could write their own checks and dictate their own destinies and sold Hill's dream project, a retro nostalgia vehicle about tough guys, femme fatales, bad guys, and pop music but when the movie landed in the screening rooms at Universal they knew they had a problem. Streets of Fire is weird as hell and out of step with what movie-going teens of the summer of 1984 were looking for. So dire was the outcome that Streets of Fire ended up getting killed in its opening weekend against one of the weakest Star Trek movies and then the following week Ghostbusters dropped and until Beverly Hills Cop came out it was the only thing anyone wanted to talk about. In the years that followed Streets of Fire gained a cult following that appreciates what Hill was trying to do. It's an upgrade from The Warriors in many ways and the sound track, paired with powerhouse performances from Diane Lane and Willem Dafoe in early roles, delivers a wildly entertaining, deeply silly action movie with an enduring legacy. Let us tell you all about it.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon: https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

Streets of Fire is a rock n roll fantasy film that crossed genres and had music at its center. Unfortunately, even though it was wildly creative, when it hit theaters in 1984, the reception to the film was underwhelming. Fortunately though, when the film made its way to home video and cable TV, it started to develop a following. Nowadays its has a high-level cult status and many critics have looking more kindly on it. While mediocre reviews were certainly one reason it didn't do very well, one cannot overlooks its competition. This movies was released in the summer of 1984, a pretty hot summer for movies. To stand out it would have to defeat some behemoths and it just wasn't up for the task. On today's show, I talk all about this wonderful film. I start by talking about a game we used to play at the video store, where Streets of Fire was my go-to film. Then I move onto the movie itself, discussing the people in front of and behind the camera, its style, music, planned sequels, and much more. This film filled me with optimism for films at the time. It showed that creative people were trying new things and while I couldn't explain all of the decisions they made in the film, I continue to find them all very intriguing. This is a cult film that is a very easy watch and will have you singing along and ready to watch it again and again.

I'll take obscure 80's film for 500, Pat. And the answer is: Streets of Fire What is an action noir starring Michael Pare and Willem Dafoe? Oh, I'm sorry, not quite, anyone else want to take a crack at it? What is a romantic drama starring Diane Lane? Mm, close, but we're looking for something different, one more try? What is a musical comedy starring Rick Moranis? Nope, that wasn't it either, we were looking for 'What is an action noir romantic drama with musical comedy elements starring Michael Pare, Willem DaFoe, Diane Lane and Rick Moranis?' No points this round. This week on The CineMeh Podcast Josh and Ryan charge headfirst into The Battery district to review a film Ryan calls 'the most confused movie he has ever seen.' Not quite an action noir, not quite a romantic drama, not quite a comedy, not quite a musical, not quite set in the 1950s, not quite set in the 1980s, not quite set in Chicago, not quite set in New York City, Streets of Fire isn't quite many things, but it is completely itself. One of the most unique and uniquely strange films of the season, there isn't much to save the atrocious script, unlikable characters, nonsensical plot and inconsistent tone. But it's banging soundtrack and relentless swagger make this one worth a watch, even if only once. Streets of Fire was released in 1984 and stars Michael Pare, Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, Rick Moranis and Amy Maddigan with appearances by Bill Paxton, Rick Rossovich and Lynne Thigpen. There were a lot of what-ifs when it came to the score for 1984's Streets of Fire. After rejecting James Horner's compositions, director Walter Hill had a movie that had no music. Cooder, on the other hand, had music that had no movie! His score for Stroker Ace had been rejected by director Hal Needham. So it was a stroke of luck for both of them. Hill's ultra-artificial "rock & roll fable" may have bombed at the box office at the time, but four decades later the movie has long since received the recognition it deserves. It's a masterful cult classic with a fantastic Cooder score. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. What happens when a top-flight director (Walter Hill - 48 Hours, The Driver) decides to to spearhead a new original story blending various genres including gritty crime drama, rock musical, and star-crossed love story....also setting it within an unrecognizable urban setting and time period?  Well the result is one of the more bizarre financial flops of the 1980's which no one at the time truly knew what to make of....not critics, not audiences, not even much of the cast! :) This "Rock and Roll Fable" tells the story of the mysterious drifter Tom Cody (Michael Pare) and the young lady he loves Ellen Aim played by a very young (at the time) Diane Lane.  Ellen leads a fierce rock band known as The Attackers and she herself has been targeted by the villainous Raven played by an also very young (and menacing) Willem Dafoe.  This now cult classic is about to turn 40....let's revisit  it and hopefully we can get Nowhere Fast! ;)   Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
