This minisode kicks off with a wild tale about Dead Meat from Dr. Mzee, setting the tone right from the jump. The crew then dives into the story of an ex-soldier who fled his country to escape investigations into his sudden success. Barry breaks down the idea of “different money,” and the fellas reflect on whether showing the behind-the-scenes of a product is really as important as it seems. They wrap things up with a list of what they're looking forward to as the year winds down. And more!
In this episode of Your B Side, you'll discover that Courtney has a soft spot for ramen without broth and vinyl records. Between a year in Peru, her love for The Wire, and the antics of her famous dog, she shares stories full of curiosity, humor, and a taste for adventure.Support the showListen to all the episodes, rate and review us wherever you listen to your podcasts!--Écoute tous les épisodes, laisse nous une note et un commentaire partout où tu écoutes tes podcasts!Contact: Instagram (EN) Instagram (FR) TwitterLinkedinFacebookEmail: your.bside.podcast@gmail.com Credits: Jazzy Abstract, by BeatComa-Media

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we discuss David Cronenberg, one of the truly great Canadian geniuses and the filmmaker credited with the advent of “body horror” (a distinction he bristles against, for what it's worth). Our B-Sides today include Fast Company, The Brood, M. Butterfly, and Spider. Our guest today is the incomparable Veronica Fitzpatrick, professor at Brown University and Editor-at-Large and Podcast Co-Host at Bright Wall/Dark Room. We talk about how handsome Oliver Reed is in The Brood, how Cronenberg's films often start with a bang, how misguided M. Butterfly is, and how Fast Company was, in fact, a movie directed by David Cronenberg. There's talk of his novel Consumed, his multiple collaborations with certain great performers like Jeremy Irons, and his incredible, intellectual mind. This is a man who has adapted Stephen King, William Burroughs, Don DeLillo, J.G. Ballard, and Patrick McGrath. What range! There's the real-life French diplomat on which M. Butterfly is based, as well as the metatextual nature of both Cronenberg's adaptation of David Henry Hwang and his later picture A Dangerous Method. It's Cronenberg taking stock of the psychology of his own films! Fascinating. Veronica mentions B.D. Wong's Tony speech, we all marvel at the fact that Adrian Lyne remade Lolita (with Jeremy Irons!) in 1997 and it barely got a release! There's a lot in here! Happy Halloween!
Don't stare too long into that Ketamine Sun because SIDE B of Unutterable (2000) has arrived, along with the caterer, and we're ready for more (i.e., Pumpkin Soup and Mashed Potatoes). Are you searching for the new episode now? Certain things in this world should always be spoken in the same breath. Be it respect, acceptance or merely just because that's the way it has always been, some things you just don't mess with. Like a pie and tomato sauce, a Tim Tam straw, bacon and eggs, and The Meanies and Australian music. It seems The Meanies can't ever put a foot wrong, even when it comes to apathetically releasing a song recorded 25 years ago that just happens to have worked its way to the surface, although, admittedly they did hedge their bets somewhat by inviting another classic Aussie band from that era in Frenzal Rhomb to provide a cover of Play This Song Every Night on the B Side. From the late 1980s and into this century, Melbourne pop punk-meets-hardcore-meets-punk-meets-attitude outfit The Meanies have crawled and fought their way into the halls of Australian music royalty, generally not caring either way about the trappings of success and the money and problems that invariably come with it. Put simply, The Meanies are the band that keeps on giving, and if you have no idea about why or how these guys have etched themselves into the realm of champions, then I suggest you repeat Grade 5. Or maybe listen to this chat HEAVY recently had with frontman Link Meanie. We ask him how a song could just be found after 25 years in captivity, to which he had a strangely semi-serious answer."We initially released an EP and a couple of more EPs from that recording session," he explained. "The more traditional Meanies-type songs. But I was just a bit confused at the time and recorded a whole bunch of ridiculous shit. There was a disco song, there's a fucking country song. I don't know what the fuck I was thinking, but yeah. So we did release those, and we had a whole bunch of other stuff that we've gradually done a bunch of singles with. So we'll have one of those tracks on the A side and a couple of Aussie bands covering our songs on the other side. So we've been lucky enough to have some really good bands do that."In the full interview, Link told us the story behind the suddenly found music and why it has been drip-fed over the years. We discussed the song itself, Shutdown, and the funkier direction it takes, asking if that was a direction The Meanies had contemplated taking 25 years ago. He told us of the fun he had writing and recording that sexier number, and the potential for The Meanies to rebrand themselves as sex symbols. We chatted about having Frenzal Rhomb and Leeches! feature on the B Side, each band covering a different song by The Meanies. We also spoke about the friendship and connection between them and Frenzal, and some fun times they have had together over the years. The topic of grunge music and its global invasion was raised, and how The Meanies started up around the same time, but never conformed to what was a rapidly expanding genre. He told us about the band's single launch tour starting on October 31 and what fans can expect, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about a performer that we lost far too soon: Bill Paxton. Our B-Sides today include Brain Dead, Indian Summer, Traveller, and Frailty. Our guest is Billy Ray Brewton, and we cover a lot of ground. We dive into Paxton's Roger Corman origins (Crazy Mama getting reamed out by legend Stella Adler in New York, his ultimate move to Los Angeles, James Cameron, etc.), his love of movie-making and being on set, his tragic death, and much, much more. We mention his first directing gig (“Fish Heads” by Barnes & Barnes on SNL), his last directed feature (The Greatest Game Ever Played), and his recent podcast appearances before his death. There is also this charming late night appearance.

Leviticus 16 is the heart of the Torah - and it's all about Jesus. Hosts Jenna Wright and Pastor Matt Looloian dive into the Day of Atonement. This ancient ritual, with its purification and scapegoat, was just a shadow. Jesus is the substance. He achieved Complete Atonement, a one-time act that: Satisfied God's Wrath (Propitiation). Removed Our Sin (Expiation). The result? Full Assurance! No more fear. We can approach God with confidence in our repentance and prayer. What about the "Heavenly Things"? That's us. Jesus's blood purified us, preparing us to dwell with a holy God forever. Your Homework: Read Leviticus 16 alongside Hebrews 9 & 10 this week. Stop fearing—start living in the freedom of full forgiveness.

Leviticus 11–15 might be one of the toughest sections of the Bible to read - full of rituals, repetition, and even a few things that make us squirm. But beneath all the detail is something beautiful: a God who is thorough in His holiness and calls His people to be distinct. Join Jenna and Pastor Matt as they talk about “holy distinction,” the purpose behind clean and unclean laws, and what it means for Christians today.

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about maybe the greatest actor who ever lived: Philip Seymour Hoffman. But seriously, did Hoffman ever give a bad performance? We talk about it! Conor and I are back and our Philip Seymour Hoffman B-Sides are Leap of Faith, Owning Mahowny, Pirate Radio, and Jack Goes Boating. We go through his whole filmography, spot-checking the crucial moments throughout his career. We briefly discuss his Oscar-winning performance in Capote, his iconic supporting turn in Along Came Polly, and his Oscar-nominated role in Charlie Wilson's War. There's also an admiration at the power he wielded with silence, and an examination into why The Master is his acting masterpiece. Additionally, we remain astonished by the career of John Patrick Shanley (writer/director of Doubt), we celebrate the upcoming Greenland 2: Migration, and the ability of Richard Curtis to squeeze earnest sentimentality out of garish manipulation. There's also chat about Seth Rogen, who lost out to Hoffman for the role of The Count in Pirate Radio and was approached by Hoffman to star in Jack Goes Boating, until Hoffman played the role himself. Rogen discussed these things himself on a recent Blank Check podcast episode.

In this week's B-Side, Jenna and Pastor Jordan unpack the weighty call of the priesthood in Leviticus 8 and what it means for us today as God's “kingdom of priests.” From the gritty ordination of Israel's priests to the greater priesthood of Jesus, they explore how holiness, obedience, and grace shape our lives as mediators who stand in the gap for others.
In addition to the monthly movie talk regarding directors (for Director's Club), I am happy to present the debut episode of the music version of that same format! Only this time - all about bands/musicians/songwriters that we think are worth discussing. Alongside co-host Sharon Gissy, we both can't wait for you to listen to us nerd out about music each month with the first episode of B-Side Me.The format is simple: each of us pick an A-side to discuss (a more popular well-known song) and then we choose a B-side (a song that's more obscure) that we think you should listen to ASAP. Add our choices to playlists, listen to us talk about another art form we both adore just as much as film! Thank you so much to Sharon for joining me on this nerdy podcasting journey and can't wait for more episodes (featuring guests in the future as well). Stay tuned to the very end for a special rendition of one of the songs discussed, performed by yours truly!Director's Club is a reader-supported publication. In November 1973, Rolling Stone record reviewer Stephen Davis infamously slagged Elton John's double album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', calling it - among other things: "a big fruity pie that simply doesn't bake". Ahem. Now often regarded as Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin's magnum opus, returning guest and music-biz veteran Ralph Cavallaro joins us as we unpack the record that recently ranked number 112 on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Go figure. Songs discussed in this episode: Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (Live from Madison Square Garden, 1974), Crocodile Rock, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Tiny Dancer, Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Candle In The Wind 1997, Candle In The Wind, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, This Song Has No Title, Grey Seal (1970 B-Side), Grey Seal, Jamaica Jerk-Off - Elton John; D'yer Mak'er - Led Zeppelin; I've Seen That Movie Too, Sweet Painted Lady, The Ballad Of Danny Bailey, All The Girls Love Alice, Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting - Elton John; Can't You Hear Me Knocking - The Rolling Stones; Harmony - Elton John; Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John cover) - Queens Of The Stone Age
RtB loves the present-day shadows cast by neglected books, which can suddenly loom up out of the backlit past. So, you won't be shocked to know that John has also been editing a Public Books column called B-Side Books. In it, around 50 writers (Ursula Le Guin was one) have made the case for un-forgetting a beloved book. Now, there is a book that collects 40 of these columns. Find it as your local bookstore, or Columbia University Press, or Bookshop, (or even Amazon). Like our podcast, B-Side Books focuses on those moments when books topple off their shelves, open up, and start bellowing at you. The one that enthralled Merve Emre (Wesleyan professor and author ofsuch terrific works as The Personality Brokers) was a novella by the luminous midcentury Italian pessimist, Natalia Ginzburg. And if you think you know precisely why a mid-century Italian writer would have a dark and bitter view of the world (already thinking of the Nazi shadows in work by Italo Calvino, Primo Levi and Giorgio Bassani) Ginzburg's The Dry Heart will have you thinking again. Merve Emre, Ginzburg fan and B-Side author Merve started her piece, and we started this 2023 conversation, by asking that age-old question: “When should a woman kill her husband?” Mentioned in This Episode J. W. Goethe, Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) Michael Warner, “Uncritical Reading” Natalia Ginzburg. The Little Virtues (personal essays that do not stage an excessive evacuation of the self, but instead triangulate between reader, writer and object of concern…) Elena Ferrante, The Neapolitan Novels Fleur Jaeggy, Sweet Days of Discipline and These Possible Lives Rachel Ingals Mrs. Caliban (1982) Read transcript here Learn more about your ad choices. In remembrance of the legendary Robert Redford, we're resharing this conversation from 2024 on his extraordinary career and most overlooked performances. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about the movie star. The person who if you looked up “movie star” in the dictionary there would be a picture of him. Robert Redford! Today we talk the esteemed career of the quintessential movie star. Our B-Sides include: The Hot Rock, The Great Waldo Pepper, Havana, and The Last Castle. Our guest today is Blake Howard, podcast producer, host, and really good guy. Check out One Heat Minute Productions for everything new and relevant in Blake's world. We discuss a million things, from why The Hot Rock is so hard to find, to the airplane stunts in The Great Waldo Pepper, to why Havana doesn't work. There's an investigation into the politics of The Last Castle, a brief celebration of Lena Olin, and a quick rave for Jordan Harper's searing short story “My Savage Year.” Additional topics include that upcoming City of Hope release, why Peter Yates is “slow vibes central,” why great screenwriter William Goldman knew why The Great Waldo Pepper underwhelmed at the box office (from his book Adventures in the Screen Trade), and how exactly the A-Side The Natural literally looks like nostalgia. Finally, we mention why Raul Julia didn't take a credit on Havana, we reference that superb Scott Frank New Yorker profile, proclaim ourselves defenders of Hollywood Homicide, and discuss the end of Redford's career.
When Randi Trimble is found murdered in her garage, police have no suspects until her husband starts changing his story. How does a low budget horror film and a wannabe director play into the gruesome murder? This podcast is hosted by ZenCast.fm
We've all been stuck in conversations that feel like hostage situations. This isn't about passionate people with good stories — it's about the chronic monologuers, the one-uppers, and the human foghorns who think “conversation” means “your turn to listen to me, and now your soul is mine.” In this episode, you'll get five tactical ways to keep your sanity, stay engaged enough to be polite, and maybe even turn things around. Whether you're dealing with a talker at work, a relative who never comes up for air, or a stranger who traps you at a party, these strategies will help you handle it without burning bridges — or your patience.
