Achoo! We're falling in love with the one and only Faith Prince. You Might Know Her From Modern Family, Emily in Paris, Melissa & Joey, Spin City, My Father the Hero, The Last Dragon, and Broadway productions of Guys & Dolls, A Catered Affair, Bells Are Ringing, and BOOP!  Faith talked to us about grounding her character, Valentina, in the cartoonish plot of BOOP!, coping with fame during her star-making turn in Guys & Dolls, and leaning on her co-star Gerard Depardieu in one of her first leading roles on camera in My Father the Hero.  Faith also shared stories from working as a Broadway replacement in the cumbersome costume of Ursula in The Little Mermaid and the notoriously “realistic” production of Anne as Miss Hannigan. All that, plus working with theatre legends like Jerome Robbins, Abe Burrows, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, doing dialect work at Joey Lawrence and Lily Collins, doing her best Cyndi Lauper in cult fave The Last Dragon (and making pals with Berry Gordy, and working with Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell in the short-lived High Society.   This one was a HOOT.  Patreon: www.patreon.com/youmightknowherfrom Follow us on social media: @youmightknowherfrom || @damianbellino || @rodemanne Discussed this episode: Evergreen topics for Anne and Damian: Tyne Daly in Gypsy, Grease, Spice Girls track listings, we look like cats in Heathcliff, the cast of Mannequin 2 aka is it Jonathan Silverman, no it's William Ragsdale in Herman's Head, Sex and the City/AJLT Cynthia Nixon's kitchen tour Tom and Lorenzo and their SJP adventure Plays Valentina in Boop on Broadway We love Dancer/Choreographer Rachelle Rak Coughing as Adelaide was tougher than talking and singing in character voice Bob Saget used his stand-up to differentiate himself from Danny Tanner  Nathan & Adelaide are famously the SOUBRETTES in Guys & Dolls so Jerry Zaks put them forward instead of Sky and Sarah (this changed how future productions positioned the 2 couples)  Jerry Mitchell says it's important to pass the baton down to the next generation of musical theatre stars Arthur Laurents aka “the meanest man in show-business”, Jerry Gutierrez, Abe Burrows, Comden & Green, Sondheim, Barishnykov, Howard Ashman, Jack Plotnick, Tina Landau,  My Father the Hero w/ Gerard Depardieu “Dirty Books” from The Last Dragon / Suzanne de Passe and Berry Gordy produced the soundtrack. Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

GREASE - was a pop culture musical phenomenon that took the world by storm and become a right of passage for any child in the 80s and beyond. The Born to Watch team tackles this classic and hand jive all the way to Graduation.Released over four decades ago, "Grease" (1978) remains an iconic and beloved musical that continues to captivate audiences of all ages with its infectious energy, memorable tunes, and timeless themes. Directed by Randal Kleiser and based on the 1971 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the film has solidified its place in cinematic history as a quintessential representation of 1950s nostalgia, high school romance, and the power of self-discovery. From its catchy melodies to its vibrant choreography, "Grease" radiates a distinct charm that has stood the test of time.Set in the summer of 1959, "Grease" follows the whirlwind romance between Danny Zuko (John Travolta), a leather-clad bad boy with a heart of gold, and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John), a wholesome Australian exchange student. After a chance encounter during their summer break, the couple faces the challenges of navigating the social dynamics of Rydell High School upon their unexpected reunion. Danny's tough-guy reputation clashes with Sandy's good-girl image, setting the stage for a delightful exploration of teenage identity, peer pressure, and the transformative power of love.At its core, "Grease" is a celebration of youthful exuberance and the trials and tribulations of teenage life. The film expertly captures the spirit of the 1950s, from the fashion and music to the burgeoning cultural shifts of the era. The lively musical numbers, including classics like "Summer Nights," "You're the One That I Want," and "Greased Lightnin'," are not only irresistibly catchy but also serve as windows into the characters' emotions and desires. The soundtrack's timeless appeal is a testament to its enduring popularity, with audiences across generations still tapping their feet and singing along.John Travolta's charismatic portrayal of Danny Zuko is a highlight of the film, as he effortlessly embodies the role of the lovable rebel torn between maintaining his tough image and pursuing genuine love. Olivia Newton-John's performance as Sandy is equally captivating, as she transitions from the demure, naive newcomer to a confident young woman unafraid to express her true self. The chemistry between Travolta and Newton-John is palpable, lending authenticity to their characters' emotional journey and making their on-screen romance all the more believable. The supporting cast adds depth and humor to the story, with standout performances from Stockard Channing as the sassy and rebellious Rizzo, Jeff Conaway as Danny's loyal friend Kenickie, and Didi Conn as the quirky and endearing Frenchy. Each character brings a unique flavor to the narrative, showcasing the diversity of personalities that make up the high school experience.Randal Kleiser's direction brings a visually vibrant and energetic atmosphere to "Grease." The film's iconic dance sequences, choreographed by Patricia Birch, are a sight to behold, combining slick moves and exuberant choreography that perfectly complement the film's lively musical numbers. The high-energy dance-off at the school carnival and the electrifying hand jive scene are just a few examples of the film's memorable moments that have become ingrained in popular culture.Beyond the catchy tunes and lively performances, "Grease" delves into relatable themes of self-acceptance and the challenges of finding one's identity in the face of societal expectations. The characters' struggles to fit in, overcome peer pressure, and forge genuine connections remain relevant to audiences today. The film's ultimate message of embracing one's true self and following one's heart resonates across generations, reminding viewers that authenticity and self-discovery are timeless pursuits. However, it's important to acknowledge that "Grease" has faced criticism for its portrayal of certain gender dynamics and its lack of diversity. The film primarily revolves around heterosexual relationships and conforms to traditional gender roles, which may be at odds with contemporary sensibilities. Moreover, the absence of racial diversity within the main cast and the predominantly white portrayal of a high school in the 1950s overlooks the multicultural reality of American schools during that period. In conclusion, "Grease" (1978) remains a cinematic gem that continues to shine brightly in the pantheon of musicals. Its infectious energy, unforgettable characters, and timeless themes make it a perennial favorite that has earned its place in the hearts of audiences worldwide. While it may not be without its flaws, the film's enduring charm, catchy music, and vibrant dance sequences ensure that it will remain a beloved classic for generations to come. "Grease" transports us back to a simpler time while reminding us that the journey of self-discovery and love is a universal and everlasting one. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Lez Hang Out | A Lesbian Podcast

You know who else falls in love after just a kiss? Lesbians. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about the classic 1978 musical romcom, Grease. We really wanted to talk about this movie, especially with the recent release of the spinoff tv series, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, which we honestly both really enjoyed!  Grease is, at its core, a deeply unserious campy coming out story for Danny Zuko. Over the summer he is out and free being his best gay self dancing with his guy friends and flexing his wrists to and fro. He's somehow both a himbo and a herbo all at the same time. But as soon as school starts back up, he's back to trying to be Mr. Tough Guy to reassure everyone about how manly he is. Danny falls for Sandy so fast, and then when he sees her again at school he panics like a typical useless baby gay. There is just something distinctly queer about Sandy and Danny's relationship. Danny Zuko is far from the only gay in this movie. Literally all of the Pink Ladies have a little something extra going on with one another. Marty is pretending to have boyfriends all over the world (we get it Marty, we totally believe that your penpals are totally real boyfriends), while Rizzo is faking having sex. They are always looking at each other in a deeply sexually charged manner and we know what's going on ladies, you can't fool us. Then we have the T-Birds. That's a dance troupe of gay men if we've ever seen one. Danny and Kenickie have absolutely got something going on or at least did in the past and you cannot convince us otherwise.  We know one thing for sure, Grease Should've Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. Leigh Holmes Foster (@lshfoster) and Ellie Brigida (@elliebrigida). Jordan Barrow is currently making his Broadway debut as the principal role of Boq in "Wicked", making him the first black actor to play the role in North America. He talks about how he got into performing—from joining a theatre camp to doing voiceover work and getting his first professional job when he was 13. He shares how didn't sing until he was 11 and even cried after getting the role of Danny Zuko and finding out he had to sing in front of people for a Grease musical in a summer camp. Jordan explains why he decided to go to school instead of pursuing acting right away (his agent ended up dropping him eventually). He shares his career journey from auditioning for Shakespeare in the Park in 2015 to booking a guest starring part on “POSE”. Jordan gets real about how the pandemic affected his work, wherein he lost 14 weeks of work removed, but despite that, it was also during the pandemic that he auditioned for "Wicked" and got the role of Boq. He shares that it was his fifth time auditioning and that he did not give up thanks to his mindset of how every audition is an audition for the next thing. He recalls his Broadway debut and what the experience was like, doing spot-check rehearsals, and what makes his work exciting and fresh. Jordan Barrow is an actor based in New York City currently making his Broadway debut as the principal role of Boq in "Wicked". He graduated from the University of Michigan in the Musical Theatre program and holds a certificate from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts Shakespeare in Performance program. His other stage credits include "Sousatzka", "America V 2.1: The Sad Demise and Eventual Extinction of the American Negro", "Witness Uganda", "Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust Road", "The Tempest", "Hairspray" and "Peter Pan". He has appeared in several movies and tv shows, including "POSE", "Broad City", and "Amy and Peter are Getting Divorced". The hosts examine the Enneagram Types of each character in the film from Danny Zuko to Patty Simcox and discuss why “Grease” has spoken to so many people so consistently through the years.“I felt like the most developed, I don't know about normal, but human sort of character was Rizzo. I connected with her, I think, more than any other character.” - TJ Ingrassia [19:56]“This movie was clearly a fantasy, but it also speaks to the ideal of self-delusion and fooling ourselves and filling our heads with stories about how the world is.” - Mario Sikora [29:06]“I think it's reflective of the fact that culture is dynamic and that we as individuals are dynamic. And not only is it ok, it's actually beneficial to look back at what were things that were ok in the past, whether it was culturally or just for me.” - TJ Dawe [44:18]TIMESTAMPS[00:01] Intro[00:40] This week's movie: “Grease”[01:37] Why “Grease”[04:15] A reflection of the time[07:49] About “Grease”[10:39] Hosts' response to the film[16:35] The characters' Enneagram Types[29:05] John Travolta and Danny Zuko[39:46] At the drive-in[43:41] Culture is dynamic[47:15] Final thoughts on “Grease”[50:30] Next week's movie: “Birdman”[51:56] OutroConnect with us:Awareness to ActionEnneagram on Demand The Awareness to Action Enneagram PodcastMario Sikora: IG: @mariosikoraWeb: mariosikora.comTJ Dawe:Web: tjdawe.caTJ Ingrassia:Web: tjingrassia.comYouTube: @TypeCast

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/334 Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Henry Winkler, an actor, author, producer, and angler, is here to chat about fly fishing, Happy Days, and his incredible life. We find out what it felt like to get offered the movie, Grease and why he turned it down, how he got the role in the HBO show Barry, and how he managed to do great things while being challenged with dyslexia. We dig into his books and movies - how they came to be and the inspiration behind them. And we discover similar truths about fly fishing and acting.  Show Notes with Henry Winkler 02:55 - For the past 10 years, Henry has been fishing in Swan Valley, Idaho 05:20 - Double hauling is the most tricky thing for Henry. He's been fishing since 1986 but he's never done a double haul. The second most difficult thing for him is the rules: the things you need to do in order to place the fly in the place you need it - mend, strip, watch, strike 07:20 - The truth about fly fishing and acting for Henry 09:00 - Henry's wife, Stacey Weitzman is also a good fisherwoman 10:55 - For a long time, Henry didn't think he was capable of dry fly fishing, then one day he started dry fly and became successful at it 12:30 - Henry describes the guides that he's had 15:09 - Henry and Lin Oliver wrote 39 novels for children 15:15 - Henry also wrote a book about fly fishing called, I've Never Met an Idiot on the River. This was originally published in 2011. 16:30 - Henry recently won an Emmy for the TV series, Barry - an American black comedy crime drama thriller 17:20 - MacGyver was the first show Henry produced because he couldn't get hired as an actor 17:55 - Happy Days introduced Henry to the world. He used to receive 55,000 letters a week and people welcome him to their homes all the time. 20:30 - Henry, who played principal Himbry in the movie Scream, was asked to go uncredited because the producers did not want to detract any attention from the younger, lesser-known actors 23:05 - Hank Zipzer: The World's Greatest Underachiever - is a story about a boy who has dyslexia. Henry also considers himself dyslexic. 27:15 - Henry's favorite fly pattern is called the Winkler - it's a pattern that someone made for him when he fished a river in Blackberry Farm, Tennessee. It's like a little mayfly. Unfortunately, we don't have a picture. He said it works well. 29:28 - Henry tells the story of when he went to New Zealand for 10 days to fish. He was sponsored by an outfitter. His favorite trip though was when he went to Argentina. 32:00 - Henry was offered the role of Danny Zuko for the movie, Grease, but he turned it down because he played Fonzy for already 10 years and he couldn't sing 33:20 - Henry tells the story of how he got the role for the TV series, Barry. His son Max directed his audition. Conclusion with Henry Winkler So there you go..  Henry Winkler, the man, the myth, the legend. Words can't describe how happy I am to be able to speak with one of my childhood idols.    Thanks to Fonzie and Happy Days, lots of people had a wonderful childhood. Henry is proof that a disability can't stop you from doing great things. So thank you, Henry. I hope you live for as long as you wish. See you on TV! Eyyyy! Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/334

Episode 69: Barry Bostwick & Marilu Henner - Fifty Years Of Grease, Part 3

BROADWAY NATION

2022 marks the 5Oth Anniversary of one of the most popular musicals in the history of Broadway – GREASE.  My guests on this episode are two of the many stars that emerged from the original Broadway and touring productions of that long running, record breaking show – Barry Bostwick & Marilu Henner. Marilu Henner's association with Grease goes back to the very beginning when as a teenager she created the role of “Marty” in the original Chicago production of the show. A few years later she played the role again in the First National Tour and then eventually on Broadway. Her other appearances in Broadway include the plays and musicals, Over Here!, Chicago, The Tale Of The Allergists Wife, and she starred in the National Tour of Annie Get Your Gun in 2000. She is of course best known for her role on the hit TV series Taxi, as well as her many other film and television appearances. Barry Bostwick created the role of “Danny Zuko” in the original Broadway production of GREASE for which he received a Tony nomination. He has appeared in seven Broadway plays and musicals including his Tony Award winning performance in The Robber Bridegroom. He has starred in dozens of film and television productions including the mini-series George Washington, the hit sitcom Spin City, and as “Brad Majors” in the cult classic the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Both Marilu and Barry have contributed anecdotes and memories to a new book that was released just last week, entitled Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. In this delightful conversation Marilu shares impromptu performances of songs that never made it out of the Chicago production, and tells us why she turned down her initial offer to be in the show in New York. You will also hear about the wild times and amorous adventures that a dynamic young cast of future stars got up to on tour, as well as the immense contribution of Grease's choreographer Pat Birch, the infamous tight pants that Barry thinks helped win him a Tony Award, and much, much more. Also check out her work at Raconteur, especially with Dance Cry Dance Records. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Happy birthday to Marissa's mom, Karen! That is, if you're reading this on the day the episode was released. If not, then either happy belated birthday, or happy early birthday for next year. You choose. This was the first joke Phil's son was able to pull off: "What's green and smells like blue paint? Green paint!" He's still working on our new favorite: "What's the secret to telling a good joke timing." Therapy in the future will be Phil's son going into a VR experience where a Pokemon-branded A.I. therapist goes through his father's social media and podcasts and then administers a virtual medication. Other pop stars discussed include Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Cher and Prince. We also talk about non-Pop musicians like Klaus Nomi, Bruce Springsteen. “Weird Al” Yankovic, Charli XCX, Hank Williams and the Ramones. We get into so many Britney songs: “...Baby One More Time”, “Gimme More”, “Work Bitch”, “Radar”, “Unusual You”, “Until the World Ends” (featuring Nikki Minaj & Ke$ha), “Oops I Did It Again”, “Toxic” and her rendition of Sonny & Cher's “The Beat Goes On”. Jake recommends this Mystery Show podcast episode about Britney (though he incorrectly attributes it to the podcast Invisibilia). Phil mentions the Netflix show This Is Pop. The third episode "Stockholm Syndrome" discusses Max Martin's team in Sweden, and one producer explains the piano-playing finger formation the he dubs “hit claw” (which was used to create "...Baby One More Time"). Here's the “Toxic” remix from the Promising Young Woman soundtrack, and here's the mash-up with the B-52s' “Love Shack”. Phil was familiar with Rolling Stone cover featuring Britney with a Teletubby, but had never noticed the Teletubby. The documentary about Britney's conservatorship (and the #freebritney movement) that we refer to is Framing Britney Spears. Here's Britney being interviewed by Michael Moore for Fahrenheit 9/11. We don't even mention that Dan Aykroyd plays Britney's character's dad in the movie Crossroads! Fear not, the saga of bread & butter pickles controversy does continue in this episode. Here's Britney & Justin Timberlake's denim outfits. Marrisa's right, kefir is very similar to yogurt. Other types of alternative milks discussed include almond milk, soy milk, oat milk and coconut milk. We talk about a lot of different iconic leather jacket looks, including those of Indiana Jones, Marlon Brando, Danny Zuko, Arthur Fonzerelli, Eddie Murphy, Ford Fairlane, Blade and The Matrix. We couldn't find any evidence of what Jake calls a “snowy river jacket” ever appearing in The Man from Snowy River. Banthas are the big hairy things in Star Wars that live on the desert planet of Tatooine (not the ice planet of Hoth). They stand in for either camels or buffalo.
