Tonight on the Long Road to Ruin, we look back at Grease and Grease 2! One of the most successful movie musicals ever made spawned one of Hollywood's most infamous sequels, and we're breaking down how it happened. We examine Grease as both a beloved coming-of-age romance and a 1970s nostalgia machine, exploring how a rough-edged stage musical evolved into a polished cinematic fantasy of 1950s adolescence. Then we shift gears into Grease 2, a sequel that kept the leather jackets, motorcycles, Pink Ladies, and T-Birds but seemingly lost the magic that made the original a cultural phenomenon. Was Grease 2 truly the disaster its reputation suggests, or was it simply misunderstood? Join us as we discuss the music, performances, production history, themes of identity and belonging, the economics of sequels, and why one film became a timeless classic while the other became a cautionary tale of franchise filmmaking. Grab your leather jacket and join us at Rydell High!Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

✦ Grease is the word, and it's also the film we're screening for our next City Lights Cinema event. Join us at the Plaza Theater next Saturday, August 16, at 4 pm for a movie plus shenanigans. We'll have a couple of competitions ahead of the screening – one for the hand jive - the ridiculous patty-cake type routine that the entire graduating class at Rydell High does during the school dance, and we'll also be hosting a costume contest! So, throw on your favorite dancing shoes, leather jackets, and blue jeans and meet us at the Plaza Theater on August 16. Get your tickets now at WABE dot org slash events. ✦ Atlanta Influences Everything, as espoused by Tory, Ian, and Bem, speaks to the fact that what is local in Atlanta is national and even international. This is evident in the work of Korean American filmmaker Crystal Jin Kim. Her latest short film, Threadbeat Dad, was shot in Atlanta but is poised to reach the world. Kim joins City Lights Co-host Jon Goode, from her filmmaking residency in Jeju, South Korea, to discuss the film and her journey as a filmmaker. ✦ Brunching in Atlanta is practically a sport. There are strategies involved—arrive early to beat the rush of a crowd, or maybe you're a diner that prefers to make reservations. Regardless, you'll need good stamina to make it through bottomless mimosas and rich portions of pancakes and bacon. BUT in this economy, who has the money to drop $80 to $100 on breakfast food and drinks every weekend? In our new mini-series, Brunchin' on a Budget, we feature several delicious AND affordable brunch spots in Atlanta. On today's premiere installment, WABE Arts Reporter Summer Evans heads to Decatur to visit Pastries A Go Go. ✦ When we think of the European Master of Art, Atlanta might not be the first connection we make, but this story aims to revisit that assumption. Enter Athos Menaboni, an Italian-born artist, who moved to Atlanta in the 1920s. While here, he painted ceilings, murals, and even airplane interiors for Coca-Cola executives. But his most profound passion? Birds. From cardinals to crows, he painted them not just with scientific accuracy but with reverence. It led to him and his wife, Sara to publish Menaboni's Birds, a book now considered a Southern classic. City Lights Collective member Victoria Lemos shares more on this bit of Atlanta history. ✦ Are you a fan of music photography, but craving something more than a casual stroll through an exhibit? How about being surrounded by over 1,200 iconic images of rock legends, projected onto 40-foot-high walls, all synced to a high-octane soundtrack played through a state-of-the-art sound system? Amplified: The Immersive Rock Experience, now showing at Atlanta's Illuminarium, takes visitors on a full-body journey through the history of rock and roll. Created in partnership with Rolling Stone, the show blends legendary soundscapes with cutting-edge visuals to celebrate the artists and moments that defined generations. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane sat down with creative director Brad Siegel to learn more about the making of this immersive experience. ✦ In our series, In Their Own Words, we check in with our artistic community. This is where they tell us who they are, what they do, what they love, and a few things you might not see coming. What things? Who knows, there's only one way to find out. Today, we hear from Atlanta actor Christopher McDonald, who recently appeared in Superman.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Danny's the leader of the T-Birds, a group of black leather jacket-wearing greasers while Sandy hangs with the Pink Ladies, a group of pink-wearing girls led by Rizzo (Stockard Channing). When they clash at Rydell's first pep rally, Danny isn't the same Danny from the beach. They ultimately try to be like each other so they can be together. If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts.  Welcome back to another episode of Bad Dads Film Review, where your favorite film fanatic Dads unpack the best and worst of cinema and television. This week, it's all about schools! To kick things off, we're hitting the books with our 'Top 5 Schools' in film and TV. We'll be rating and debating the most iconic educational institutions, from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to Rydell High. Whether they're havens for superheroes, breeding grounds for drama, or just incredibly wacky, we've got them all covered. For our 'Movie of the Week', we're going undercover at a modern high school with the 2012 action-comedy reboot, "21 Jump Street". Starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as rookie cops tasked with blending in as high school students, we'll discuss the movie's clever subversion of genre clichés, the dynamic comedic duo, and how the film deftly blends high-stakes action with raucous humour.Lastly, we take a nostalgic trip down memory lane with the classic 90s kids' TV show, "Saved by the Bell". We'll chat about the iconic characters, memorable storylines, and the series' enduring appeal. We'll also reflect on how the show portrayed high school life and the lessons we - or our kids - may have taken from it.So grab your school bag and join us for a trip back to those locker-filled corridors. Welcome to Bad Dads Film Review, where we discuss, dissect, and occasionally detest, films and TV shows from a Dad's perspective. Class is now in session! We love to hear from our listeners! In this highly-anticipated prequel to the classic movie musical, Grease, viewers follow the story of the four founders of the legendary "pink ladies" and their quest to have fun on their own terms. Jason shares his experiences of portraying Buddy, his journey as an actor and musician, and his insights into the making of this exciting new series. Tune in to hear about the show's unique approach to storytelling and the moral panic it sparks at Rydell High. In the series, Buddy is portrayed as the quintessential golden boy of Rydell High School. He is the star quarterback of the football team, the current student body president, and the most popular person in the school. Buddy's privileged status has blinded him to the problems faced by his less fortunate friends and peers, and he has a naive and idealistic view of the world. As the series progresses, Buddy begins to confront certain truths about the school's social hierarchy, including the discrimination and prejudice faced by some students. These realizations leave him at a crossroads, and he must decide whether to maintain the status quo or to use his position of influence to effect change and fight for the rights of those who are marginalized. The series explores themes of privilege, power, and the responsibility that comes with them, and follows Buddy's journey as he grapples with these issues and decides who he wants to be. This spring, actor and singer-songwriter Jason Schmidt can be seen starring as Buddy in Paramount+'s highly anticipated Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies. Slated to premiere on April 6, the series is a prequel to the beloved movie musical, Grease. The prequel musical series follows the four founders of the legendary "pink ladies" who dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever. Buddy (Jason) is the golden boy of Rydell High, the quarterback of the football team, the reigning student body president, and the social king. Due to Buddy's privilege, he sees life through a rose-colored lens and doesn't notice how the current hierarchy of the school negatively affects his friends and peers. Throughout the series, Buddy will face certain truths and will be left at a crossroads. In addition to Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Jason can currently be seen starring in the world premiere musical adaptation of The Outsiders portraying the role of Sodapop Curtis. The Outsiders officially opened on March 5, 2023, and is currently being showcased at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. The Outsiders is based on the coming-of-age novel by S.E. Hinton and Francis Ford Coppola's Motion Picture. Taking place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1967, the play portrays the hardened hearts and aching souls of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their chosen family of 'outsiders' in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. Depicting a story of the bonds of brotherhood and the hopes we all hold on to, this gripping new musical reinvigorates the timeless tale of 'haves and havenots, of protecting what's yours and fighting for what could be. A natural-born performer, Jason got his start in acting at just nine years old when he joined the cast of The Hobbit The Musical at his community theatre in Chicago. He instantly fell in love with being on stage and continued to act within his community theatre whilst also prioritizing his studies. Upon high school graduation, Jason began to audition for college programs and was accepted into the world renowned theatre program at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. His formal training taught him how to be a resourceful actor but more importantly how to look at the world as an artist. It was there, inspired by those around him, that he began to write music and dance, which has now become equally as important to him as acting, making him a multi-hyphenate and triple-threat talent. When Jason is not on set, he can be found in the studio, honing his craft as an independent artist. He is a singer-songwriter and is consistently releasing music across all music platforms, and is currently working on an album. In addition to promoting his various music and acting projects across his social media, Jason is also passionate about using his platform to advocate for mental health.

Join us for the episode we never intended to be a tribute — but sadly became one just five days after recording this extremely personal debate about our generation's most beloved and enduring character, Rydell High's Sandy Olsson from the movie Grease. It was during the editing of this recording that we learned that Olivia Newton-John, the woman who brought Sandy to life, had died. And the outpouring of grief that followed sent us back to the studio to record a new introduction to our discussion about Sandy — because we needed to share our feelings and mourn with each other about the passing of the woman who meant so much to us and to the world. Just a heads up: there will be crying.Check out this wonderful article by People Executive Editor, Jeremy Helligar, here.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter & TikTokSupport the PCPS by becoming a patron on Patreon. How do you follow up one of the most successful musicals in modern memory? How about you cast relative unknowns in lead roles and get them started with a 1/2 finished script that makes ZERO sense, and only just barely connects to its source material? YES, THIS MOVIE IS GOD AWFUL...but it has earned its cult status over the past almost forty years...so join us as Ashley introduces Katie to a beloved childhood favorite, and the final entry in our SEQUEL SENSATION theme -- 1982's Grease 2. Starring Michelle Pfeiffer in her first leading role, this film picks up two years after Olivia Newton John and John Travolta hand jived their way through Rydell High -- focusing on our NEW CLASS of Pink Ladies and T-Birds. Michelle plays Stephanie, the leader of the Pink Ladies who is just so OVER dating T-Birds and is looking for a new man...a "cool rider". Enter new kid in town, Michael Carrington (played by Maxwell Caulfield, aka REX MANNING) -- Australian Sandy's cousin from the original film, although he is inexplicably British. He sets his sights on winning Stephanie's heart by learning everything there is to learn about motorcyclin' - and takes on a secret persona as said "cool rider". This film then gets nuts with wacky songs (hello, even if you hate this film, the song "Reproduction" is a must) insane dance numbers, and an almost 2 hour runtime. We also discuss how this film affected Ashley's entire fashion aesthetic all throughout her life, the gang's favorite musicals, a new mini-Let Me Introduce You, and a preview of our SEASON FINALE in 2 weeks. So put on your motorcycle hat and enjoy one of our more divisive episodes - 'cuz come on, we've got a rep to protect! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
