(Originally posted on Patreon on Oct. 16, 2023) What happens when you mix an iconic singing duo from Japan with minimal knowledge of the English language with a comedian of dubious quality and wrap it all up in a dying variety show format? You get Pink Lady! Or...is it Pink Lady and Jeff? Even the show itself doesn't know what to call this glorious mess. We dig into the history of this infamous disaster and cover it's fifth, and last, episode to air on NBC.
Roughly one-third of all food produced is never eaten. Beyond the financial and social costs, food waste is also a major driver of climate change. When we waste food, we waste the land, water, and energy used to produce it, and as it decomposes, it releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas.In this episode, James and Daisy explore the causes and consequences of food waste, sharing their experiences with organisations fighting the problem. Why do we waste so much food? What are the impacts? And what solutions are there?SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: Project Drawdown: Identifies reducing food loss and waste as one of the largest climate solutions across all sectors. The Felix Project: London's largest food redistribution charity, rescuing high quality, surplus food that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing it to over 1,200 community organisations.FoodCycle: Reduces loneliness, food poverty and food waste by cooking nutritious meals from surplus food at volunteer-run hubs. OTHER ADVOCATES AND RESOURCES:Winnow: Provides AI-powered food waste monitors and digital scales in professional kitchens, giving detailed data analytics to help chefs and managers cut waste. WEF (2022): Reports on how heatwaves and droughts have resulted in oddly shaped crops of fruit and vegetables.Tesco (2020): During the pandemic, egg demand rose 30%, prompting Tesco to sell white eggs for the first time since the 1980s. Tesco: In 2013, Tesco became the first retailer to publicly report on food waste in its own operations.PVM: At least 60% of the surface of a Pink Lady® apple must be covered by a pink blush.Oddbox: Works with growers to rescue the “too odd” and “too many” at risk of going to waste, delivering boxes of farm-fresh fruit and veg to households. Too Good To Go: The world's largest marketplace for surplus food – an app that connects consumers with surplus food from stores, cafés, and restaurants at a discount.Olio: A mobile app for sharing by giving away, getting, borrowing or lending things in your community for free, aiming to reduce household and food waste.Mimica (2018): Creator of “Bump”, a temperature-sensitive label that turns bumpy when food actually spoils. Chanzi: Uses Black Solder Fly larvae to convert food waste into nutritious protein for animal feed. SOME FACTS: UNEP (2024): In 2022, households wasted over 1 billion meals a day, while 783 million people were affected by hunger and a third of humanity faced food insecurity.UNEP (2024): Food waste results in the throwing away of more than US$1 trillion worth of food every year. In households alone, each person, on average, wastes more than the average mass of an adult human per year.IPCC (2019): During 2010–2016, global food loss and waste equalled 8–10% of total anthropogenic GHG emissions. Our World in Data (2020): If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of GHGs after China and the US.WRAP (2020): While 81% of people reported being concerned about climate change, only 37% understand how wasted food contributes to it. The Independent (2012): A wrapped cucumber lasts more than three times as long as an unwrapped one. Thank you for listening! The High Court has ruled against housing asylum seekers at The Bell Hotel in Epping, granting a temporary injunction that could reshape the UK's asylum policy. Local councils, including Broxbourne, are now considering similar legal action, raising the question: where will migrants go if more hotels are closed? In this episode of The Daily T, Camilla and Tim discuss the political fallout of the Epping ruling, the future of migrant hotels across Britain, and how the Labour government will respond. Will ministers attempt to overturn the decision, or risk a wave of councils following suit? With a record 50,000 migrants crossing the Channel since Labour took office and Reform's Nigel Farage hailing it “a great victory”, the pressure is mounting on the government. And we talk about the rise of the “Pink Ladies” - the local mothers leading peaceful protests outside asylum hotels - and the growing grass roots movement they represent. Lindsey Thompson, an Epping resident and one of the original protestors, joins us to explain why she took to the streets and why the campaign is gaining national attention.Producer: Georgia CoanSenior Producer: John CadiganExecutive Producer: Charlotte SeligmanPlanning Editor: Venetia RaineyVideo Editor: Will WaltersStudio Director: Meghan Searle Hosted on Acast. Tread Perilously begins Summer Total Request Live -- the Patreon Subscriber request month -- by honoring Patron Peter and finally watching an episode of the short-lived NBC variety show Pink Lady and Jeff. Jeff welcomes special guests Lorne Green, Florence Henderson, Sid Caesar, and musical guest Blondie. Pink Lady performs a disco medley, "Yesterday," and more. Jim Varney joins Jeff and the comedy troop for a number of sketches meant to induce laughs. Caesar returns as Pink Lady's father in a shockingly unfunny sketch. The hot tub gag reveals a lot about the three stars and Blondie's musical contribution proves surprising. Justin once again doubts a genuine television show is real. He also continues to deny the existence of Randolph Mantooth. The pair are surprised to see comic book legend Mark Evanier listed as head writer. It leads to an exploration of his efforts as a TV writer. Sid and Marty Krofft make another appearance as executive producers. Both Erik and Justin try to recall how they first learned about Pink Lady's infamy. Erik claims it killed the prime time variety format. Sketches are dissected. Sid Caesar must pay for a crime. Johnny the Dog's short-lived celebrity surprises everyone and Florence Henderson proves to be the MVP once again.
We'll be back with a brand new edition of TV Confidential later this week. In the meantime, please enjoy this clip from February 2020 in which Tony and Ed remember Pink Lady and Jeff (NBC, 1980), the short-lived and, in many respects, infamous variety series produced by Sid & Marty Krofft, which premiered on Mar. 1, 1980 during This Week in TV History. Tony's coverage includes first-hand knowledge: He was in the studio audience at NBC/Burbank on the night that the first episode of Pink Lady was taped in December 1979.
Dan likes the Dekopon orange. Lex likes Pink Lady apples. We also talk about technology.Apple's investing in a new server farm in Texas. But it might not actually be new. This week would have been Steve Jobs's 70th birthday. Would he still be Apple's CEO if he were still alive? We feel for anyone who bought the Humane AI Pin. We wonder who will buy Rabbit. And we still have thoughts about the iPhone 16e and Apple Intelligence. Lex has CarPlay frustrations. Dan still listens to the radio for one very specific reason. And Rebound Prime members can hear us cover two VERY exciting topics in the bonus episodes: Towels and laundry. Giddyup!
The 1970s were a splendid time for television, at least it seemed like it at the time. In the spirit of all that was entertainment during the '70s, NBC introduced us to Pink Lady in 1980, and brought Jeff along for the ride. Who were they and why is their TV show frequently cited among the worst TV shows of all time. Find out here!

Vicky Gurovich has recently been promoted to Executive Sous Chef at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town. It's been a long time coming. She was head of pastry there under Chef Rudi Liebenberg and now runs the kitchen under the steady hand of Executive Chef Luke Barry. Together they've driven innovation in the iconic 'Nellie' Hight Team Tea and have launched a Saturday Braai experience for guests, as well as an extension of the Planet Bar serving a Mediterranean-inspired menu driven by local produce. We chatted about the revered hotel's commitment to working with sustainable local supplier and the importance of this 125-year-old institution's footprint on the culinary landscape of cape Town. Small wonder the 'Pink Lady' was recently named the best hotel in Africa and currently sits at number 28 on the World's Best Hotels list. In 1980, a variety show debuted on NBC called Pink Lady and Jeff. Its stars were a pair of Japanese pop idols known for catchy, choreographed dance numbers. Pink Lady was inescapable in Japan: selling millions of records, appearing on TV daily, and filling arenas. But their American TV show left audiences completely bewildered. Pink Lady and Jeff acquired legendary status as one of television's most notorious bombs, a show that managed to kill off the entire variety show genre. Or at least—that's how it's been seen in America. But for the two women of Pink Lady, the show was something else. In this episode, Decoder Ring's Evan Chung puts this so-called “megaflop” in the spotlight to find out what really went wrong. You'll hear from Mie and Keiko Masuda of Pink Lady, their co-host Jeff Altman, head writer Mark Evanier, and legendary TV producer Sid Krofft of H.R. Pufnstuf fame. This episode was written and produced by Evan Chung. It was edited by Willa Paskin. Our translator was Eric Margolis. Decoder Ring is also produced by Max Freedman and Katie Shepherd, with help from Sofie Kodner. Derek John is Executive Producer. Merritt Jacob is Senior Technical Director. Special thanks to Kelly Killian, Lorne Frohman, Rowby Goren, Michael Lloyd, Cheyna Roth, Karin Fjellman, Cole delCharco, and Hannah Airriess. Send us a textHello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom! This is part 3 of our Pink Ladies series. Mary Louvestre was an African-American Union spy in Norfolk, Virginia, during the United States Civil War. She delivered details of plans for the conversion of the wrecked USS Merrimack to an ironclad that would be named the CSS Virginia and which represented a great advance in Confederate naval capabilities. While she was not an official Pinkerton Lady, I feel she did the work of a Pink Lady and deserves to be highlighted in this series.Resources:https://pinkerton.com/our-insights/blog/the-lady-pinks-celebrating-womens-contributions-to-pinkertons-legacyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Louvestrehttps://www.civilwar.com/history/significant-people-of-the-war/union-women/278058-mary-louvestre.htmlhttps://www.marinersmuseum.org/2017/03/featured-union-spy/https://blackandeducation.org/stories/2017/8/27/mary-touvestre-civil-war-intelligenceInstead of our “Say What?!” segment I thought I would share a recipe I found interesting and a good side dish for any Thanksgiving table;https://www.countryliving.com/food-drinks/a61974851/harvest-salad-pickled-pomegranate-seeds-recipe/All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/
Could of old dudes talking about hand wounds and being called sir. What's the deal with Pink Lady apples? Getting attacked by a shark on the same beach seems crazy. No way he's going to a second train show. Maybe Leigh Baldwin comes? And so much more on a Wednesdee!

Deep Dive DISCUSSION! In the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina lies The Omni Grove Park Inn, a luxury retreat with a haunted reputation. Built in 1913, the inn has been a haven for the rich and famous, but it's also home to a more mysterious resident: the Pink Lady. We dive deep into the lore of the Pink Lady, exploring firsthand accounts of strange encounters, unexplained cold spots, and sightings of a ghostly woman dressed in pink. Is she still searching for answers, or is she forever tied to the inn's tragic past?

In this episode, we're uncovering ten of North Carolina's most haunted locations. From historic mansions to eerie battlefields, the Tar Heel State has a spooky side that's filled with restless spirits and chilling legends. So, grab your flashlight and settle in as we explore some of North Carolina's darkest haunts. Featured Locations: Biltmore Estate Asheville, NC The opulent Biltmore Estate, built in 1895, is the largest privately-owned home in the U.S. But behind its grand halls and stunning gardens lies a haunted past. Visitors often report seeing George Vanderbilt's shadowy figure in the library and hearing strange splashes in the mansion's empty pool. Battleship North Carolina 1 Battleship Rd NE, Wilmington, NC 28401 This famed World War II battleship is known for ghostly sightings, particularly that of a young sailor who died in an accident. Guests have heard phantom footsteps echoing through the corridors and chilling sounds of distant gunfire, as if the ship is still engaged in battle. Brown Mountain Lights Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Gorge, NC The Brown Mountain Lights have been a mystery for centuries, with glowing orbs floating over Brown Mountain. Legends suggest they are the spirits of fallen soldiers or lost Native American warriors, forever wandering the mountain in search of home. Omni Grove Park Inn 290 Macon Ave, Asheville, NC 28804 This historic hotel is home to the Pink Lady, the spirit of a woman who fell from the fifth floor in the 1920s. Known for her friendly demeanor, she's often seen on the fifth floor or playing harmless pranks on hotel guests. Devil's Tramping Ground 4900 Devil's Tramping Ground Rd, Bear Creek, NC 27207 A barren circle in the woods where nothing will grow, the Devil's Tramping Ground is said to be the place where the Devil himself paces at night. Visitors report objects mysteriously moving from the circle, and an overwhelming sense of dread lingers around this strange spot. Great Dismal Swamp North Carolina-Virginia Border The fog-shrouded Great Dismal Swamp is rumored to be haunted by the souls of those who sought refuge here centuries ago. Visitors often report eerie lights and ghostly figures floating through the dense wilderness, forever lost in the swamp's depths. Maco Light Maco, NC The ghostly light of conductor Joe Baldwin's lantern is said to float along the old train tracks in Maco, where he met his untimely death. Though the tracks are long gone, the light is still seen by those who dare to visit, swinging as if held by an invisible hand. Lydia's Bridge Jamestown, NC Legend has it that Lydia, a young woman killed in a car accident in the 1920s, still hitchhikes near this bridge on rainy nights. Drivers who pick her up say she disappears just as they approach her home, leaving only a chill in the air. Bentonville Battlefield 5466 Harper House Rd, Four Oaks, NC 27524 Site of a bloody Civil War battle, Bentonville Battlefield is said to be haunted by the spirits of fallen soldiers. Apparitions in ragged uniforms and the sounds of musket fire have been reported by visitors walking these hallowed grounds. Bellamy Mansion 503 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28401 Built in 1859, the Bellamy Mansion is home to the spirit of Mary Bellamy, who is often seen on the grand staircase. The mansion's basement is also rumored to be haunted by a former servant, with eerie sounds and voices frequently heard. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Christopher Lewis, son of entertainer & human juggernaut, the one, the only, Jerry Lewis. Chris was kind enough to reach out to us via a mutual connection at the Library of Congress and was pretty terrific about answering all our questions, big and small about the man known as “The King of Comedy.” The impetus for our chat was Chris' book Jerry Lewis on Being a Person, a 300+ page book is packed with photos, ruminations, life lessons, antidotes and more. It's a wonderful look at a complex comedian, director, writer, producer, golfer and philanthropist. Chris talked to us about his father and was frank about why he looks at his father with “rose colored glasses,” his father's lust for life and everything in between. Somehow we get to a vast amount of information on “Le Roi du Crazy” as the French called him. Our discussion hits everything from his love of audio and video technology to just how much of the Jerry Lewis archive was delivered to the Library of Congress. We also spoke about culturally significant high points like his guest appearance on Pink Lady and Jeff ans Slapstick (of Another Kind). Along the way we get to talking about The Day the Clown Cried, an true art imitates life Rupert Pupkin stalking situation that had everyone in the family on edge, why handshake deals were so important to Jerry and what comedians made Jerry Lewis laugh. All you have to do is sit back and listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.

Kevin just watched a horrible movie and can't wait to tell the Mayor all about it! So kids, welcome to 1978's Record City. It's purportedly a comedy, but yikes, not a single joke lands. But at least the setting is fun, since the whole thing takes place at a late 70s California record store, and they have the Blondie and Jim Croce posters to prove it. The movie is also notable for its ensemble cast of familiar faces from Flopcast favorites like Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Brady Bunch, Batman, Lost Saucer, and even Pink Lady and Jeff. Get ready for some wacky (and problematic and cringeworthy) record store hijinks that completely fail to entertain. Meanwhile, just outside Record City, there's a big talent show hosted by a certain Disco Duck-singing DJ, and starring a certain Sledge-O-Matic-wielding comedian. Do we recommend that you watch Record City? Absolutely not. Does Record City somehow feature just one single arm from a gorilla suit? Oh yes, it sure does. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network!
