Our girl for all seasons Eureka O'Hara joins me to talk the mirth, magic and mayhem of the undercover feminist cult classic GREASE 2! We get into what a T-Bird could mean these days, the majesty of Michelle Pfeiffer, shooting dance numbers before the songs are ready, the chaotic grandiosity of producer & impresario Allan Carr, the impact of RSO & Robert Stigwood on our culture, fan theories about Grease's Sandy - and our own theories about Frenchie, John Travolta, Maxwell Caulfield's brief moment of Hollywood Heat, Cool Rider and much much more. Mark and Mike don their leather jackets and watch the 1982 sequel, Grease 2. They discuss musical numbers, trading in cruisers for motorbikes, and who wants to be a Pink Lady.
Steve and Alejandro dab a little Brylcream in their hair, put on their leather jackets and jump onto their Honda Scramblers. Why? Because they're bound for this 1982 musical romantic comedy sequel directed by Patricia Birch and starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Maxwell Caulfield, Adrian Zmed, Lorna Luft and Pamela Alden. A very special episode: It's Christina's birthday! As is tradition, co-host Christina gets to make co-host, Brian, watch one of her favorite movies for The First Time. Christina's choice? Grease 2, that much-maligned 1982 sequel to the 1978 masterpiece. Michelle Pfieffer cooly rode her way to super stardom while critics panned the rest of this (now) cult classic. Upon rewatch, does Christina still love it? Did Brian enjoy it at all? The Old Roommates head back to Rydell High for a lesson in nostalgia, all through a middle-aged lens. We're going back...back...back to sequels this week with the cult classic dud, "Grease 2"! It's off-kilter and amusing for about 45 minutes, and then it really goes into a ditch, but in the meantime we get Didi Conn, Lorna Luft, Eve Arden, Dodie Goodman, Adrian Zmed, Peter Frechette and of course, Michelle Pfeiffer as Stephanie, who's a total ketchup abuser and maybe kind of a jerk, and Maxwell Caulfield as the impossibly hot nerd Michael. This movie may be no cool rider, and we're not necessarily prowlin' to see it again, but who knows, maybe love will turn back the hand of time. It's the start of a brand new era here at "So, What's the Problem?" as it's time for Jen and Jimmy to watch movies have never seen but have heard they are possibly problematic. Or, in the case of this movie, they just wanted to bitch about Grease. This should be a once a month deal, to try to change things up a little. Next week will be Jen's pick that she has seen but Jimmy has not.
“E.T. phone Zmed!”It's the summer of ‘82 and Jason, Dan, & Fred are lining up outside the movie theater to see the most anticipated movie of the year…GREASE 2! Also, there was apparently a movie about an alien called E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL that people liked, too. Jason is getting sued for Smurf copyright-infringement; Olivia Newton John is helping Dan get Physical…with himself; and Fred is stealing magic balls and slicing up fetal pigs…ya know, your typical early tween summer in the 80s. Let's bowl, let's bowl, let's rock and roll with EPISODE 97 of OPENING WEEKEND!

(Do keep in mind that this podcast is rated R for utterly filthy language.) Well hi there, partner. Load Bearing Beams is back for season 2 with a long and free-wheeling discussion of Grease 2 (1982). This famously bad (but maybe it's not so bad?) sequel to the 1978 smash was an enormous flop upon release, but it has built quite a cult following over the years. We break it down, plus talk extensively about the first Grease movie and the different versions of the stage musical that preceded it. Plus we get to the bottom of whether the T-Birds and Pink Ladies in either of these movies actually like each other, and what Michael Carrington (Maxwell Caulfield) is really up to down in that bomb shelter. Letterboxd says, "It's 1961, two years after the original Grease gang graduated, and there's a new crop of seniors and new members of the coolest cliques on campus, the Pink Ladies and T-Birds. Michael Carrington is the new kid in school - but he's been branded a brainiac. Hello everyone! Today's podcast is another in my "It's a Love Story” series, sponsored by my book of the same name, which celebrates four years of existence this month. What in the world? We've done 21 of these episodes, and traditionally, when we come up with a quintessential love story, something a little more mainstream than Grease 2 comes to mind. I imagine the majority of you haven't even seen Grease 2, let alone knew it existed. I'd like to take this time to plead my case. Just listen to this synopsis: Stephanie Zinone is the leader of Rydell High School's Pink Ladies, a gang of girls who are counterparts of the school's group of greasers called the T-Birds. Stephanie is tired of her relationship with top T-Bird Johnny Nogerelli, so she breaks up with him and quickly catches the eye of English exchange student Michael Carrington. Hoping to win her over, Michael tries to overcome his nerdy ways while holding off the jealous Johnny. Grease 2 taught us that brainy students who know Shakespeare can also be cool riders. We learned that high school talent shows in the 60s had legitimate production value, and anyone can learn the ins and outs of reproduction through the magic of song and dance. It was fun AND educational. EPISODE NOTES: HERE is an oral history of how Grease 2 became a cult classic. Interested in the bowling scene?? Click HERE! Interested in "Girl For All Seasons?" Fact. Michelle Pfeiffer is the coolest person who has ever lived. This week Raven and Campbell discuss enthusiastic background dancers, horny-ass song lyrics, and ask what makes a good sequel in the cult classic, Grease 2. Cool Rider Recipe (makes more than 1 drink!): - 4-5 oz vodka (spicy or regular, live your life) - 2 tablespoons agave - 1 ½ cups cold water - 4 oz fresh lemon juice - 2-4 fresh jalapeño slices - The tiniest bit of food grade activated charcoal for some edge In a large glass or a small pitcher, muddle jalapeño slices in fresh lemon juice. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. Add ice if that's your thing. For at least 20 years Grease 2 was dismissed as the unloved sequel to an unquestioned classic. Well, guess what. If you follow this podcast at all, you probably know that Gabe is an inexplicably huge fan of GREASE 2. Well, we figured that for our second movie commentary episode, we'd throw Gabe a bone and cue that sucker up (if you happened to catch our Christmas episode where we watched IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, you'll know what to expect). And in the interest of providing some context and behind the scenes knowledge —as well as providing Gabe with a much needed ally— we asked our friend and GREASE 2 expert Gwen Ihnat to return to the show and help us out. So when we give you the signal — you press play on your copy (or stream) of GREASE 2 and then join us for the greatest step ladder-straddling Michelle Pfeiffer movie of all time. Cool rider, indeed.
