Rev. Patrick Hunnicutt preaches on the twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Scripture passage is Matthew 22:15-22.
The Pharisees in our text could not have cared less about taxes. Their goal was to entrap Jesus in his words. Jesus responds to render unto Ceaser what is Cesar’s and render unto God what is God’s. Jesus distinguished that there are things that belong to the earthly world and others that belong to God. The worldly things are temporal, and the Godly things are eternal. Jesus tells them that if Cesar’s image is on the coin, it is his, and they should return it when asked. The Bible says that we were made in God’s image and, using Jesus’ words, we belong to Him.

The conflict with culture comes in three parts; religious, oppression and political. Here we try to understand the problem and how we should answer it.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow, on his hierarchy of needs, puts "belonging" about mid-pyramid, third in importance. Jesus might have argued, and moved it down to the very bottom of the pyramid, the place of our foremost foundational need. Jesus understood our need to belong because he created it, and he was not shy with either his claims about where we belong or his relentless pursuit of getting us there.

Matthew 22:15-22 (CEB) 15 Then the Pharisees met together to find a way to trap Jesus in his words. 16 They sent their disciples, along with the supporters of Herod, to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are genuine and that you teach God’s way as it really is. We know that you are not swayed by people’s opinions, because you don’t show favoritism. 17 So tell us what you think: Does the Law allow people to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” 18 Knowing their evil motives, Jesus replied, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin used to pay the tax.” And they brought him a denarion. 20 “Whose image and inscription is this?” he asked. 21 “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said, “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” 22 When they heard this they were astonished, and they departed.

Bob Hapgood tackles what to do when the society and the church disagree.
The dreaded Tax Day is just around the corner. Do you take the condition of your taxes more seriously than the condition of your soul? The Pharisees were out to get Jesus. They wanted him out of their lives so much that they were willing to join forces with their enemies, the Herodians, to trap Him. They were hoping Jesus would either command followers to reject paying Roman taxes leading to His arrest for insurrection, or command them to pay taxes in a way that would lead the people to turn against Him as a Roman sympathizer. Instead, Jesus established true Authority which should have led any person concerned with honoring God to audit their soul. How should we respond to God’s authority as it pertains to the authority of the government and more importantly the condition of our souls?

In conclusion to the Our Citizenship Sermon Series, the truth is told regarding religious freedom in the U. S. A. - as promised by the first amendment listed in the Bill of Rights - and the need for our actions regarding threats Bible believing Christians are facing; due to current efforts being made to distort and diminish those rights.

Peacemaking in an Uncanny World
Peacemaking in an Uncanny World
The sermon, God and Caesar, focused on a scene in Jesus' life where he is asked a question about paying taxes to Caesar (Matthew 22:15-22). His answers to such questions challenged the religious and political establishment of his day, and kicked off a reform movement that continues today.
Jesus, confronted with a question about taxes that is seemingly impossible to answer, shows how idolatry lies at the heart of the question and amazes his hearers with his response that questions where their loyalties really lie.

Rendering Appropriately Matthew 22:15-22
The 20th Sunday after Pentecost
We give out of gratitude for all God has done for us. We give because we recognize that everything belongs to God in the first place. When we give God multiplies it to do more than we can imagine.
Who do you say you are? You may have many labels describing your identity, but where does that identity come from? Join us on our final sermon of the series as we challenge an assumption that we have about our identity.

It's not until you GIVE your life COMPLETELY to God that you'll find true SATISFACTION.
It's not until you GIVE your life COMPLETELY to God that you'll find true SATISFACTION.
An offering should be neither out of obligation nor compulsion, but out of the abundance of one's heart. When we give, we are to do it cheerfully and sacrificially, like we're giving something that matters to us. When we begin to pray and ask God to take away our sometimes negative spirit with regard to money, our eyes will be opened and we can begin to see that our entire lives are to be an offering unto God, and in realizing that, we'll discover that our monetary giving is but a small portion of our life's offering to this earth. (Matthew 22:15-22)
Romans 8:28 teaches that God can turn something bad into something good for those who love God. We can see this in Jesus' life as He was attacked by the Jews again in our passage - Mathew 22:15-22.
