What if your depression had hit points and could punch back? Welcome to the Shadowfell. Huge thanks to DungeonFlow.app for sponsoring this episode—because even in the Shadowfell, your dungeon prep shouldn't be a nightmare. Sign up today at DungeonFlow.app and start building better encounters, faster. It's free to try, easy to use, and unlike the Shadowfell... it won't drain your soul. In this laughably bleak episode, the RPGBOT crew takes a torch (dimly lit, flickering with existential dread) and dives headfirst into the Shadowfell—D&D's very own Plane of Gloom, where your hopes go to die and the sun never texts you back. The hosts unpack the lore, the gloomcore aesthetics, and the mechanics of navigating this dreary dimension. From emo elf-goths to soul-sucking murder ghosts, they explore the Shadowfell's rich tapestry of despair with their trademark mix of irreverent humor and actual, useful advice. They cover Shadowfell travel tips (spoiler: don't forget your psychic damage buffer), notable creatures like Nightwalkers and Sorrow Sworn, and character options like the Shadar-Kai, for when you want your rogue to have a nose ring and chronic emotional detachment. Also: haunted vacation spots, deific edgelords, and a call for better horror monsters in D&D. Because the real horror is boring stat blocks. Book of Ebon Tides, Kobold Press (affiliate link) Dungeon Master's Guide (affiliate link) Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (affiliate link) Forgotten Realms Wiki - Shadowfell Pathfinder Wiki Archives of Nethys Key Takeaways The Shadowfell is the emo cousin of the Feywild – Think sad trees, gray skies, and your bard journaling about “the void.” Stranger Things is Shadowfell-adjacent – The Upside Down is basically what happens when Vecna fails upward. How to get there – Use Shadow Crossings, dark rituals, or emotionally devastating breakups. Character options abound – Play a Shadar-Kai for teleporting angst or a Fetchling for stylish gloom-chic. Sorrow Sworn are weaponized sadness – They literally punch you with feelings. Therapy not included. Nightwalkers? Nope. – These CR nightmares are like walking voids of death, and not in a metaphorical way. Dark Powers are... mysterious? – Like your crush from high school who only wore black and spoke in riddles. Char, Queen of Shadow – She's hot, terrifying, and probably has a playlist full of Evanescence. Shadowfell Tourism – Visit Evernight! Stay at the Tower of Loss! Bring your own light source and will to live. D&D needs better horror monsters – Less "zombie #87", more “this thing screams in your brain and smells like your mom's regret.” Understanding the Shadowfell makes games richer – Misery loves roleplay. Last week on Darkness & Dragons, our heroes had moved to confront and conquer the cause of so much of their grief. Along with Verity, Brillia and Taabi, Arsen and Kos had joined in on bringing the fight to Vecna. The temporal tablecloth, or as it's referred to colloquially, the napkin, had now been adjusted to bring everyone to the plane of Ash. With an arsenal of combat ability, everyone had a brief moment of confidence until Verity's first strike had seemed in vain. Even with having the new betrayer in Bartlyre on their side, the fight looked much, much more bleak right away. Luckily, the immensely powerful God Slaying Sword had proven to be quite the critical instrument yet again. After a few volleys back and forth, the gang had finally felt the need to pull Vecna out of his domain. Especially now that Kos had been ensnared in a forcecage, the napkin had been brought out and was draped over the powerful lich. Changing the scenery from grey and beige to a full array of vibrance and popping colors, the strike force found themselves pulling Vecna unexpectedly right beside friend to the party Fennir within her home of the Feywild! However, the vacation to the Feywild was a cut short as bringing Vecna to a more appropriate locale was necessary. Fennir joined in on the battle, jumping into the napkin with the rest of the Shady Bunch. Back to the dull, but more purposefully dreary, this conflict had been almost intentionally pulled into the Shadowfell, where Lenore stood as the arrival party. Now with Vecna's defenses heavily weakened, two surprise combatants involved, and having some sort of homefield advantage, the time came to call checkmate. Lenore conjured a magnificent Temple of the Gods dedicated to the Shadowfell and the Raven Queen herself, with her own personal, eloquent tastes. Before locking Vecna into his own personal forcecage, Taabi had almost fallen to a Finger of Death spell, but managed to find his way into the temple, along with the rest of the party. Once almost everyone was brought into the temple, our Shadar-Kai cleric communed with the domain's ruler to pull apart Vecna's physical and spiritual being like a vulture over roadkill. Fennir sat on the steps of the temple watching the beauty of one cosmic being absorbing another as Bartlyre, inside, handed Brillia a vial filled with a mysterious liquid. This was Vecna's phylactery. It wasn't to be preserved. Not to be consumed either. It was to be destroyed. Using new magic, Brillia eviscerated the artifact with her Crown of Stars. All that was left was to bask in accomplishment. What’s to come now that such a powerful force has been vanquished? ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Welcome to Darkness & Dragons; the actual play livestream for the narrative roleplayer. Lost in the Astral Seas, our party struggles with separation from their friends and allies. But even with Vecna’s plans (temporarily) foiled and Cade put to death, nothing comes easy. Will Verity come to terms with who she has become and reclaim her throne? Will Taabi find hope for his people, after everything has been taken from them? Will Brilia find the love of her life, or is Kos lost forever? All these questions and more will be answered in this THE FINAL SEASON of Darkness and Dragons. Mistress Ferr presents Ariana with a mysterious tooth to help her connect with Vecna. Verity says farewell to her estranged brother and before the party makes their way to the Fortress of Memories to face the will of the Raven Queen. The team helps comfort souls as they departed the Shadowfell and transitioned to what lies beyond.    Each party member offers up a powerful memory The Raven Queen for safe passage, causing everyone to share in each other’s pain. Once emotionally drained, they enter the fortress where Lenore meets The Raven Queen for the first time. The party learns about a curse that afflicts Lenore and all Shadar Kai, and are confronted by its physical manifestation on her body. The Raven Queen promises to ease the curse by sharing it among others, leaving Lenore, Brillia and Kos uniting their souls to lighten Lenore's burden.   Tabbi gets a glimpse into the fate of his father through the voice of a raven which gives him some small comfort. Finally the party returns to the Material Plane and parts ways with their new friend and planar tour guide, Fennir. ---------------------------------- We are a Dungeons and Dragons 5e actual play focussed on roleplay over combat. Dive into Season Two, and join the team as they head into the treacherous North to find the survivors of the Massacre of Asgarth. linktr.ee/darknessanddragons  Dragging themselves out of the chaos from their royal assassination, Verity, Elly and Ariana are in mourning. Reclaiming her title, Princess Verity faces her need to repent for the murders in her past. Elly leaves behind the man she loves to find what remains of her people, long thinking them dead. Ariana struggles with what it means to be both Penny and Anisha, as her mind merges with that of a villager she was unable to save.    They are joined by new allies, Lenore, Taabi and Brilia. Lenore, a follower of the Raven Queen, finds herself drawn to helping these lost young women, but holds secrets that may change the meaning of magic. Taabi, a nomad who will do anything to survive, also seeks the secrets of the dead.  Brilia, a former housewife turned adventurer who learned her warlock abilities to protect her partner, Kos.   Twitch Stream: Wednesdays, 6:30-9pm ESTYouTube/Podcast: Saturdays, 12pm ESTJoin our community: linktr.ee/darknessanddragons   Our game is also made possible thanks in part to magicartbook, who created our gorgeous character art, and 2minutetabletop.com, who creates the beautiful maps you see during our games.
