Join Aaron and I as we discuss being inspired by older music and how it can allow us to traverse other artists and genres that comes full circle in some of our favorite bands, and getting into the minutiae of it all. Aaron then recounts how he got into hardcore and punk at an early age, how the lessons he learned from playing in smaller hardcore bands applied to what he was doing in AWOLNATION. We talk about the challenge of being a new band playing opening slots on festivals and arena shows and how he and the band planned to tackle that. All this and more in this chat with the Barbarians frontman. This week we're going to be talking about Encounters without combat! D&D is a TTRPG system that pretty much focuses on combat. During our Class breakdown episodes, we've criticized certain classes for having so few out-of-combat abilities or feats. You can see the designers tried to fix some of this with certain 2024 changes, lookin' at you Barbarians! So today, let's talk about encounters that Dungeon Masters can use that don't involve combat as the only solution! If you've ever wondered what happens when a D&D podcast accidentally becomes a Food Network special—complete with French Dips, Hot Wet Beef, Cubanos, Reubens, and enough sandwich-based emotional damage to fuel an entire barbarian subclass—this episode is for you. Before they even touch the book, the RPGBOT crew debates regional sandwiches with the same energy most people reserve for BBEGs. Then they finally tackle Part 3 of Heroes of Faerûn, where Barbarian ghosts get nerfed, Storm Heralds get swole, Cavaliers insist on riding horses in a system designed to kill horses, Monks get drunker than ever, and Oathbreakers get… surprisingly reasonable? Strap in. Bring snacks. Maybe bring a sandwich. Preferably not hot, wet, or beefy. Big news, adventurers—RPGBOT review videos may soon begin appearing in full on YouTube! That means the entire sandwich argument, every Futurama impression, every "did they REALLY rename Drunken Master to Warrior of Intoxication?" moment, all captured in glorious HD. Keep an eye on the RPGBOT YouTube channel—your long-form chaos may soon have a new home. Show Notes In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the crew dives into Part 3 of their comprehensive review of Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn, focusing on the D&D 2024 subclass updates for Barbarians, Fighters, Monks, and Paladins. The discussion opens with a riotous tangent about regional food, French Dip heresy, and the metaphysics of "hot wet beef"—a tonal masterpiece worthy of an entire episode on its own. Once they pivot into the book itself, the hosts begin analyzing the Path of the Spiritual Guardian, Storm Herald Barbarian, Cavalier Fighter, Warrior of Intoxication Monk, and Oathbreaker Paladin, comparing their 2014 designs to their 2024 updates. Barbarian: Path of the Spiritual Guardian The hosts dig into the mechanical overhaul of Spiritual Protectors, explaining how the powerful 2014 taunt effect has been split into selectable options—Distract, Protect, or bonus damage—resulting in a strict nerf despite added flexibility. The new capstone, Vengeful Spirits, grants extra attacks on high rolls, though the table questions whether the feature fits the subclass thematically. Barbarian: Path of the Storm Herald In contrast, the Storm Herald Barbarian receives across-the-board improvements. With damage scaling tied to Rage bonus, updated terrain options, and the ability to change environments every time they Rage, Storm Herald becomes far more flavorful and versatile than its 2014 version. Tundra's new ability to subtract damage rolls from enemies is highlighted as both weird and delightful. Fighter: Cavalier The Cavalier Fighter, historically tied to a mounted combat fantasy unsupported by the 5e ruleset, receives meaningful buffs. Unwavering Mark no longer has limited uses, Ferocious Charger gains a more dynamic battlefield role, and Vigilant Defender continues to shine with additional reactions. Despite no changes to the horse-related problem ("area effects still delete horses instantly"), the subclass gets promoted to "very playable." Monk: Warrior of Intoxication One of the most dramatically redesigned subclasses, the former Drunken Master is now the Warrior of Intoxication, centered around Mystic Brew, a full brewing system that allows monks to craft beverages like Cinnamon Dragon or Heavenly Spirit. The team debates the new mechanics, including potential abuse cases involving long rests and stacked brews, while applauding the creativity. The name, however, receives… near-universal disdain. Paladin: Oathbreaker The final subclass, the Oathbreaker Paladin, cleans up many mechanical issues from 2014. Control Undead becomes the more thematic Conjure Undead, Aura of Hate integrates more cleanly with Aura of Protection, and new spell options sharpen its identity. The crew notes that the subclass finally stands independently, without requiring a friendly necromancer to function. Throughout the episode, the hosts blend detailed mechanics analysis, design philosophy commentary, subclass balance comparisons, and their signature brand of comedy—including Futurama impressions, regional sandwich wars, and multiple live hot takes. Key Takeaways Path of the Spiritual Guardian Major redesign resulted in a strict mechanical nerf, splitting the 2014 taunt into weaker modular effects. Vengeful Spirits introduces extra attacks but feels thematically disconnected. Needs another design pass. Path of the Storm Herald Substantial quality-of-life upgrades, including Rage-based terrain switching and improved scaling. Desert, Sea, and Tundra each gain flavorful new mechanics. Considered one of the biggest winners of the 2024 subclass update. Cavalier Fighter Unwavering Mark and Ferocious Charger receive meaningful buffs. Still has the same "horse fragility" problem, but the subclass is otherwise extremely strong. Gains crowd-control and tanking tools that outperform Sentinel. Warrior of Intoxication One of the most overhauled subclasses in Heroes of Faerûn. Mystic Brew adds flavorful utility but suffers from action-economy bottlenecks. Multiple "default pick" beverages suggest it still needs tuning. Creative, fun, thematically wild—but the name is universally mocked. Oathbreaker Paladin Improved spell list, more thematic undead support, and better integration with core auras. Conjure Undead makes the subclass self-sufficient. Stronger and more coherent than the 2014 version. Send us a textLloyd Ashley spent years on the pitch as a professional rugby player. But what came after is just as powerful. In this episode, we sit down with Lloyd to talk about what it really means to transition from sport, how identity shifts when the structure fades, and how building a career in player support gave him purpose off the field. From playing for the Barbarians to working as a plumber between games, Lloyd's story is a masterclass in reinvention. He opens up about the fear of regret, the weight of uncertainty, and how small decisions like enrolling in a 12 week counselling course can change everything. Now leading mental health and wellbeing support for the Welsh Rugby Players Association, Lloyd reflects on the messy, nonlinear path from elite sport to meaningful work and how he's helping others build futures with clarity, honesty, and courage. What You'll HearHow Lloyd balanced contracts, education, and part time jobs while still playingWhy his plumbing apprenticeship shaped how he sees life after rugbyWhat he learned from falling through a ceiling and earning £20 a dayThe surprising power of a 12 week counselling course that shifted everythingWhy taking your kids to school mattered more than another year in pro sportThe difference between having options and having a planHow he built a post sport life with intention not panicWhy regret can be more painful than failureHow lived experience became his biggest asset as a Personal Development ManagerWhat most athletes misunderstand about the real worldHow he supports athletes emotionally and practically during transitionsWhy it's not just about having the answers but asking the right questionsGolden Nugget“I didn't want to walk away from sport with regret. What if was Conan the Barbarian. . .s? And both of him were lunkheads? We discuss this fascinating approach in this one
In 1981, the Indian writer and poet Vikram Seth traveled from Nanjing, where he was studying literature, to his hometown of Delhi. Moving by train across China to Gansu, then hitchhiking southwest through Qinghai and Tibet, it was an itinerary that makes sense when a traveler has a surfeit of curiosity but a shortage of funds. Armed with half-decent Mandarin, a fistful of foreign exchange certificates, and a scrap of paper authorizing his route, he negotiated China just as it was emerging from the Maoist era. No WeChat. No Trip.com. No Google Translate. Just a student improvising his way home as the date on his travel pass crept ever closer: fording rivers in rickety trucks, suffering altitude sickness, dealing with roadside thieves and the occasional military checkpoint. From Heaven Lake, the book that came out of that trip, still hits hard. It's sharp, observant, funny in places, bleak in others. A snapshot of a country trying to reinvent itself while one traveler tries to get home before his paperwork expires. In this Barbarians at the Gate crossover with China Books Review, Jeremiah sits down with Alexander Boyd to talk about Seth's strange, scrappy journey, what travel in China looked like in 1981, and how a writer from India saw things Western visitors of the same era tended to miss in the early 1980s.
Why are we still telling female rugby coaches they are ‘not ready' to coach at the highest levels of the women's game, when we then say to male players ‘you can go straight into professional coaching when you come off the field'? This is just one of the thought-provoking questions Giselle Mather tackles on today's episode of The Game Changers podcast.Giselle is one of the most influential and pioneering figures in rugby. A formerEngland international and World Cup winner, Giselle's extraordinary coachingcareer has seen her consistently break new ground in the sport. Giselle was the first woman to earn the RFU's Level 4 coaching qualification and has gone on to lead at the very highest levels of both the men's and women's professional game. In this candid conversation, Giselle relives the raw early years of the women'sgame, from the first Women's World Cup in 1991 to lifting the trophy in 1994,and explains how those experiences forged a coaching philosophy that puts the human before the athlete.Combining elite coaching with a busy family life as a mother of three, Giselle has coached at Wasps, London Irish, Teddington, Ealing Trailfinders and internationally as a coach for England Women and Head Coach for Team GB Women's Rugby 7s, along with the inaugural Women's Barbarians.Giselle shares how she's earned respect in men's environments, the principles that underpin her sessions and the leadership needed to build diverse staff teams where every player can connect and thrive. We talk about how visibility is the fastest route to equality for women's rugby, why elite athletes deserve the very best qualified coaches and how blunt gender quotas in coaching can backfire.Renowned for her vision, passion and commitment to developing people, Giselle has inspired players and coaches across generations. She's an extraordinary leader on and off the pitch. https://amzn.to/4n9GzlUTHE NEW ORDER OF BARBARIAN The New World SystemTHE MOST FRIGHTENING TRUE STORY EVERY TOLD! On March 20, 1969, Dr. Lawrence Dunegan listened as a member of "The Order" delivered a hair-raising speech to a room full of doctors. He and the others were told not to record what they were hearing but, instead to take notes. The speaker insisted that he was doing the doctors a favor by explaining how the world was going to change. He said he believed if they knew, they would be better prepared to accept the coming changes. Anyone can read this book and know these changes are well underway. What we didn't know was where these changes have been taking us. Until now! Lock the doors, pull the curtains and prepare to see what you may never have realized. Once you understand the plan, you cannot help but to see it advancing all around you. The biggest question of all is not should we but, how can we... stop what is happening? Inside these pages is the transcript of three taped interviews on the "New Order of Barbarians," referred to on the tapes simply as the "new world system." Tapes one and two are the reminiscences by Dr. Lawrence Dunegan of a speech given in 1969 by an insider of "The Order," Dr. Richard Day, whose credentials are listed as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics for the University of Pittsburgh; Medical Director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and member of The Order."https://amzn.to/4n9GzlUBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
This week, Jeremi and Zachary invite John Lawrence, a former senior staff member with extensive experience in the U.S. House of Representatives, to discuss the recent government shutdown. The conversation delves into the causes and impacts of these shutdowns, the role of partisanship, and historical precedents. Jeremi opens the conversation with a powerful excerpt from C.P. Cavafy's poem "Waiting for the Barbarians," setting the tone with a poignant reflection on the complexities and challenges of democracy. Dr. John A. Lawrence served for thirty-eight years as a senior staff person in the United States House of Representatives, including as chief of staff for Speaker Nancy Pelosi from 2005 to 2013. He is currently a visiting professor at the University of California's Washington Center. He is the author of: The Class of '74: Congress after Watergate and the Roots of Partisanship; Arc of Power: Inside Nancy Pelosi's Speakership; and Sherlock Holmes: The Affair at Mayerling Lodge.

Mercedes Bryce Morgan unpacks the whirlwind making of Bone Lake, an 18-day Atlanta shoot that battled storms, injuries, and lost gear before completing its night-boat climax on a Los Angeles soundstage. After a Fantastic Fest premiere and Deadline-breaking international sales, the erotic survival thriller heads to U.S. theaters with buzzy audience reactions and a proudly “fun, commercial, popcorn” spirit.Mercedes traces her path from mini DV Star Wars shorts and USC to festival features, describing her taste as a mix of Oldboy's devastation and Amélie's heart. Other past influences include Barbarians, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The House of Yes, Funny Games, and The One I Love. Her TIFF-premiering Fixation (2022) sparked her love for erotic thrillers. On craft, she argues the best twists are guessable seconds before they land, and test screenings help her fine-tune which parts of the mystery viewers might sense without solving it too soon. Her advice to young filmmakers: embrace constraints as boot camp, stick with collaborators who love the work, design for the audience experience, and make sure you enjoy the day-to-day… because the process is the life. What Movies Are You Watching?Introducing the Past Present Feature Film Festival, a new showcase celebrating cinematic storytelling across time. Picture this: You're 45 years old, halfway through writing the definitive history of your civilization. Writing this history is the family business, and you've made a promise to your dying father to finish his work no matter what, when your boss, who happens to be the Emperor of China, gives you a choice. You can be executed or, if that doesn't work for your schedule, how about castration? Sima Qian picked door number two. If you enjoyed this tale of commitment, consider subscribing or supporting the Substack. Your subscription will cost far less than what Sima Qian paid. We promise. In this special episode of Barbarians at the Gate, Jeremiah teams up with China Books Review's Associate Editor Alexander Boyd to dig into the story of history's most committed writer. Sima Qian didn't just compile China's first great historical work—he literally sacrificed his manhood to complete it after defending a friend got him sideways with Emperor Han Wudi. Jeremiah and Alexander explore what it means to speak truth to power when the consequences are real, why Sima Qian's model of moral courage feels especially relevant in our current moment of “spiritual castrations,” and whether anyone today has the stones (so to speak) to make that kind of sacrifice for their work. Sometimes the classics hit different when the world's gone sideways.

In Episode 98, Andrew Langer and Jerry Rogers are joined by Dr. Peter Pitts—former FDA Associate Commissioner and President of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest—for a sobering discussion on how America's hospital system has been hijacked by greed, mismanagement, and a lack of accountability. Dr. Pitts explains how hospital consolidation, private equity influence, and opaque billing practices have created a crisis where profit often trumps patient care. Together, they take aim at the myth of the benevolent nonprofit hospital, expose the billions spent on lobbying, and call out the regulatory failure to enforce even basic price transparency laws. After Dr. Pitts departs, Andrew and Jerry pivot to a deeply troubling story out of Charlotte, NC: the brutal murder of a young Ukrainian refugee by an individual who had been released on bond despite facing serious prior charges. The hosts connect this tragedy to the broader collapse of law and order in American cities and question why progressive leaders continue to prioritize political narratives over public safety. They explore how DEI ideology has seeped into every major institution—from hospitals to law enforcement—and how it's contributing to institutional dysfunction and a dangerous erosion of public trust.Blending policy insight, cultural critique, and principled outrage, this episode is a must-listen for anyone concerned about where the country is headed—and what must be done to save it.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.live“ ‘Barbarism' is a word that keeps coming to my lips lately,” writes Damir Marusic in a brilliant new article this week. Barbarism seems to be the only real word that describes what comes after the liberal international order. But Damir isn't pointing to the supposed barbarism of our enemies. His article points to the ways that we in the West — and in the United States — are becoming coarser and more egocentric. Like the poet said, barbarism begins at home. Shadi Hamid interrogates Damir about his piece in Socratic fashion. Is Damir maybe making a moral equivalence between the Trumpist Right and the hapless Left? While it's true that the Left isn't very effective, it can hardly be said to be barbaric. In the course of his answer, Damir discusses Alligator Alcatraz as the symbol of new American barbarism: kind of silly, but also, openly cruel. For Damir, barbarism isn't just Nazism; it is the strong turn toward selfishness and narcissism that has taken place since the middle of the twentieth century. And he has a theory of why the turn took place: secularization and the death of God. On this point, Shadi agrees, but he still has questions. Is it political structures or innate nature that make us turn toward evil? If it is the former, how can politics help in this moment to keep us from becoming truly barbaric? It is a timely and intense conversation. In our bonus section for paid subscribers, Damir and Shadi discuss why “war is a force that gives us meaning”; Shadi compares violence to orgasms; Damir's Calvinist sympathies make an appearance; Damir opposes “vulgar Nietzscheanism” with a “moral law” forged out of our “broken humanity”; Shadi wonders if Damir has finally become a moralist; can morality survive Pax Americana?; Gaza and barbarism; Christopher Hitchens and faith; the origin of the phrase, “Beyond the pale”; and more!Required Reading:* Damir, “Back to Barbarism” (WoC).* Thérèse Delpech, Savage Century: Back to Barbarism (Amazon). * Curzio Malaparte, Kaputt (Amazon). * Friedrich Nietzsche, “The Parable of the Madman” (Fordham University).
