For this episode of Make It Happen I’m joined by Jen & Danielle of the podcast She Percolates to talk about defining success on our own terms in our journey. We dig into what Jen & Danielle are defining success as right now, and the lessons they’ve learned from interviewing over 50 creatives about success too. We also talk at the end about podcasting and why it’s a medium we all love so much. If you want to give yourself more permission to define success on your own terms and pursue a life that feels fulfilling and successful along the way, this is the episode for you.
Hey gals, Danielle here. Maybe you can relate to this feeling: complete cluelessness. Yes? I believe we have all been there. I consider myself a pretty determined and inquisitive person, but there is only so much you can find when you have no clue what you are looking for, you know? YOU KNOW?! Back in 2011, my first FULL year in business, I was really good at one single thing: observing. I made a habit of watching, listening and paying very close attention to what the other businesses I saw online doing. It wasn’t creepy, I swear. One name kept coming up over and cover: Marie. Who was this mythical Marie of whom I heard so many speak? Ms. Marie Forleo, I came to realize, is like — the Beyonce of online business and she opened my eyes to something very important: everything is figureoutable. HELL YES, it is! That’s what I was doing – I was figuring it out. That’s actually what I believe we are all always doing: just figuring it out. However, UNLIKE everybody, some of the people I observed were lightyears ahead of the pack and it could all be traced back to one single decision: the decision to invest in learning. I came to realize that there are two options in business and those are you either waste time, or you spend money. The people I was most impressed by all had one thing in common: they invested in a head start. They invested in learning, and many of them invested in Marie. After I took B-School in 2012, I was mindblown. My brain was so far outside of my face it was insane. HOW on earth did I not even know half of this business stuff existed. I didn’t know about Blue Ocean or email marketing. I didn’t know about online communities or copywriting. All i really actually knew was I was overwhelmed with info. But I was thrilled to bits to have unlocked this powerful world of knowledge, I knew I just had to take it one bit at a time. B-School is not just an online course – it is a methodology. There is a system, there is an approach, there is your business: operating at a higher level…. this is the ladder up. I’m SO excited to be partnered with Marie and her team this year – 4 full years since I have taken B-School. Because at this point I have used the B-School materials on 3 very distinct projects and businesses. I used it in my product based business at Merriweather Council, the podcast here at She Percolates and my service based business as well. I am going to use it again on another project I have in the works as well. It’s relevant to all of these things because it is an honest to goodness BUSINESS CLASS for modern entrepreneurs. Allow me to be fully transparent for a moment: I would still be clueless about some of the things I learned in B-School had I not taken it. Seriously, there are things I learned I B-School that I heard for the first time about there and then not again until recently or still haven’t heard others talk about. YIKES. It doesn’t matter what you’re selling – business is business, marketing is marketing, ideas need wings. Wings don’t just appear, they are built. If B-School peaks your interest, then let me tell you it is worth every penny of your investment. And I do not say that lightly. And neither do other people. I’m willing to bet that if I asked you who do you look up to most in the online business world – your modern entrepreneurship role model – you’d name a B-School alum without even knowing they were. Because I fully believe in the power of Marie’s teachings, I am proud to be suggesting you at least check B-School out and see how you feel about it. If you are a handmade shop owner considering B-School, please take note of the super special bonus package I am offering if you enroll in B-School via my affiliate link. Here is how this works: in exchange for referring you to Marie’s program, she will pay me a commission. Because of this commission, I am able to offer the following bonuses to you for free (you pay nothing extra, but get these goodies in addition to B-SChool) + access to my Etsy Training Course ($172 value) + a copy of Conquering Chaos eBook ($15 value) + a copy of Conquering Chaos Audio Book ($9 value) + a live hangout with Jen + I during the B-School program (Let’s be honest: priceless memories will be made) + an hour long personalized consultation with me ($250 value) + a copy of my eBook the Handmade Shop Owner’s Communication Kit ($15 value) That is $461 worth of extra business betterment you get for free when you purchase B-School using this link. It is very important that you use this link to purchase in order to access these additional bonus materials that Jen and I are offering. PLUS I will check in with you via email throughout the B-School period to make sure you are doing alright and support you through this business changing experience. This is an immense value-add if you are in handmade business! Please email me at Hello (at) shepercolates.com if you have any specific questions about B-School or would like to know if this would be something you’d benefit from. Again, I fully believe in the power of this course given my personal experience with B-School and may earn a referral fee if you purchase through my link. I really wouldn’t bother suggesting you consider this course if I didn’t think you’d love it. If you are anything like me you will enjoy it. All of that is great, sure, okay Danielle… but where do I even start with this? Okay, well, start here. And seriously email me if you have questions. I’m not interested in selling this to you. I’m interested in you taking your business seriously and encouraging you to explore what you can do. I know that Marie’s course is on point but I also know it’s not for everyone. So I’m available to chat if you have questions. Hello @ shepercolates.com

Find Lindsay here: Website // Shop // Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // Pinterest Lindsay is the designer behind The Joyful Jewelry Box, where she makes one-of-a-kind jewelry inspired by her namesake. After working in human resources and mental health, a series of life events led Lindsay to open her Etsy shop in early 2014. Lindsay's style is primarily bohemian and she strives to create joy with each piece that she makes. Lindsay lives in Nipomo, CA with her husband, Brandon and their dog Trooper. We are big fans of our friend Lindsay! She has been a She Percolates supporter from the beginning so it was super fun to get to chat with her! We could have chatted for H-O-U-R-S! As we do every week we ask our guests what their definition of success is. Every week Danielle and I nod our heads and silently scream "YES" as we hear each guests answer. This week was no different! Lindsay said: "Success is about embracing my worth as a person aside from my profession, my achievements, and my failures!" Ladies {and any gentlemen followers we might have}, this is such a great reminder! We cannot and should not base our success solely on our work! Your life is about so much more than the work you do! Lindsay shares with us the her career path since high school. She talks about how she used to define success and feel valued. "Success used to really depend on my professional identity only. How useful I felt in the office and to my co-workers." Lindsay also shares how she always had a strong desire to go back to school to get her masters. She went back to school to work in the mental health field, something she thought she really wanted to do. She shares that after working in that field she realized it wasn't exactly what she wanted. Lindsay opens up about how she felt a bit embarrassed and bit like a failure because she had made this big proclamation that she was going to go back to school and working in mental health was going to be her thing. We dive deeper into Lindsay's history as she shares with us how her life was/is having lost her mother when she was only 13 months old. She talks about how this shaped and formed her from a young age. She also shares with us how her family home was destroyed by a fire the day before her senior year of high school. The few memories and mementos she had of her mother were lost and the the idea of being able to "go home" was no longer an option. "Life can be really hard, but we can create joy and connections anyway. But we have to be intentional about it."

Kristen got her start as an Etsy seller in 2010 and transitioned to teaching embroidery and hosting embroidery social gatherings in 2014. Kristen, also known as Hey Paul, hosts a variety of handmade events in unique and unexpected locations. The events are designed to be inspiring, informative, and entertaining for all people. Kristen is a self-taught embroidery artist and teacher. Kristen calls herself a dual professional. By day, she works as a Medical Social Worker at a non-profit, specializing in global pediatrics. We had a great time chatting with Kristen. She was been a huge She Percolates support and VIP {very important percolator} from the beginning! We are so grateful for all her support! As we do every week we jump right in and ask Kristen to tell us what success means to her. She jokes that her answer sounds a bit like a bad fortune cookie. We promise it isn't! ;) "I shouldn't expect to have the whole world when I don't have the whole world to give." Maybe at first this does sound a bit like a fortune cookie gone bad, but Kristen does a great job of explaining what she means. Kristen also shares how that she really tries to prioritize her time and knows sometimes she needs to step back from things as to not spread her self too thin. She recently took a few months to focus on her new job and let her side hustle take a back seat for a while. "I only have so much to give and I would rather invest that energy in a part of my life where it makes the most impact...I can't have it. I can't have the whole world when I don't have the whole world to give." Kristen also talks a bit about the recent loss of her brother. She shares how that affected her perspective on her family, her work and her life in general. This helped her to ask herself what the end game was for her business. She quickly realized it wasn't about making a ton of money because she loves her day job an has that to fall back on. We love the passion Kristen has for helping others, both in her day job and her personal business.
Our Friday Coffee Talk episodes are a time for Danielle and I chat about anything and everything. We are so happy this community enjoys hearing us talk about things that often get discussed at a coffee shop, the things you tell your girlfriends. Today we are sipping coffee and talking about being authentic in the online world. This has been a word that has been used a lot in the last few years and we want to share with our community what authentic means to us and how try and share that through She Percolates the podcast and all the supporting platforms we use to share our podcast, i.e. Instagram, social media etc.
Our Friday Coffee Talk episodes are a time for Danielle and I chat about anything and everything. We are so happy this community enjoys hearing us talk about things that often get discussed at a coffee shop, the things you tell your girlfriends. Today we are sipping coffee and talking about the idea of embracing being an amateur. Embracing the idea that you are not an expert at something, but you are still going to pursue it a will get better and learn over time. This is the approach we took with launching She Percolates and it has worked well for us. I reference Lara McCulloch's episode, we talk about Danielle's amazing Etsy Course, and we reference this Zig Ziglar quote, "You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great."
Find Hilary here: Website // Facebook // Instagram // Twitter // Pinterest // Google+ // Podcast Hilary has always had a keen interest in style, aesthetics and the decorative arts. She started her journey as a ballet and modern dancer, then moved to the study of interior design in college, and eventually found photography and styling after school. Along the way, Hilary also discovered blogging which provided her with a wonderful platform to express my love for fashion, interiors and photography with likeminded readers. In July of 2013, she launched her second blog called 'Our Style Stories.' As a supplement to the blog stories, she publishes a podcast where she interviews each Style Story guest. When she isn't blogging or podcasting, she enjoys working on set as a photo stylist in Dallas/ Fort Worth, TX. Danielle had a great time chatting with Hilary of Our Style Stories. Hilary went to school for interior design but soon realized it was a lot of computer work and she enjoyed working with her hands and moving around. She shares how she it was transition to get out of school, work really hard to find work that she went to school for, and then realize it wasn't suited for her. That is a big realization for anyone, and it is a common realization we hear often on She Percolates. This idea that you will spend your whole life after college working in the field you studied is crazy. To think that what you studied for 4 years will be what you do for the next 40-50 years is silly. You are going to evolve, you are going to grow, you interests will change. "I have found myself in a place where I'm not doing the thing I thought I would be, I'm not pursuing a career based on the degree I got in school, or the plans I set out within that. So my idea of success has had to morph." Hilary says, "If I can step back from the work that I am doing and feel a sense of peace and happiness, and not in a sort of content way. I think that it's good to always feel like there is more to do and you're not quite finished, but in a positive way. " that is success to her. "I currently step back and see my work as taking care of my son primarily and my styling has taken a bit of a back seat and so has my blog... I'm at peace with the fact that this season is about something else." Hilary also shares some of the lessons she has learned in the short time since her son was born. She says she has learned the hard way that she is at the mercy of something/someone else. She has to change what is important and she is surrendering more to be in the moment. "One thing that I have had to learn, I think kind of the hard way through having my son is that, that's out of my control." Hilary also shares with us some great advice she received from her friend Erin Loechner of Design For Mankind. Erin told her she needs to use her new lifestyle {having a baby} as something enriching for the blog. Hilary was focusing more on the logistics of having a baby and not being able to do as much. Erin helped Hilary to see things in a different light. "This big life change was actually going to be almost like fertilizer for new ideas and ways of seeing the world."
Today's She Percolates episode is all about self-doubt. We're chatting about how self-doubt gets in the way of ideas and dreams. Opportunities that have passed because our self-doubt crept in, how we get past the self-doubt and how She Percolates was a project Jen kept pursuing despite having self-doubt. This episode was inspired by a post Jen shared on the shepercolates instagram. You can see the comments our community left on the photo here. The shared vulnerability was a reminder that we all feel self-doubt.
In this first episode Danielle and Jen share with you how She Percolates came to be. Find out what inspired them to launch a podcast all about success and women and how they hope their weekly coffee dates will inspire others.
