Episode 448 - How Do I Let Go and Stop Trying to Control Today we have Jen. She is 48 from Boulder, CO and took her last drink on May 12th, 2021. Our latest Ditching The Booze course begins Monday October 2nd at 7:30pm EDT/4:30pm PDT and is free to Café RE members. The 5-week course is called Writing a New Narrative and is designed to help you explore your sobriety story through journaling and writing prompts. Cafe RE - Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee. We have partnered with Sober Link. You can find some tips and can sign up for a $50 off promo code. [02:48] Highlights from Kris: Today's question comes from Dale in Virginia. He wants to know “how do I learn to let go of things, and stop trying to control?” Kris feels that two themes that come up over and over in recovery are surrender and acceptance. He says there are different types of control and while some of it is normal and can be healthy, trying to control things such as other people and how they feel about us is not healthy. Kris shares his insights about this topic and shares with us: “when I have unrest on the inside, it presents itself on the outside. When I find that inner peace, I can extend it to the world around me”. Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored [11:50]: Kris welcomes Jen: Jen joins us from Boulder, CO area and recently celebrated two years alcohol free. She is married and they have two kids and a dog. For fun Jen likes to be active outdoors and spending time with recovery friends nearby, fabric arts and yoga. Jen didn't drink when she was young because she learned that some family members quit drinking because they couldn't control it. She drank very casually because she didn't want to develop a problem, but over time peer pressure found her drinking more frequently. In grad school there was more binge drinking and hangovers. She and her husband drank only socially prior to having kids. Jen went back to work shortly after having her first child and realized that she was missing out on a lot, so she became a stay-at-home mom. She bought boxed wine to try and save money and discovered it was too easy to refill the glass. Jen wanted to be a fun mom and used alcohol to feel less bored. Over time Jen started finding herself drinking after everyone went to bed. After a situation that found both her husband and children concerned about her, Jen started to try quitting drinking. She had already been reading quit lit and listening to podcasts. She was able to make it over 100 days but decided to attempt moderation. She found that after a while the attempts to control how much she drank became frustrating. One day while listening to a podcast episode, she had a moment of clarity where she knew she had to quit drinking for good. Jen feels that her husband quitting drinking shined a light on her drinking. She would make excuses to have drinks outside of the home. Jen quit drinking the day after her birthday. She decided to join Café RE and started going on hikes with fellow RE members, hosting chats and giving back to the community. Jen finds “playing the tape forward” very helpful in addition to listening to herself and discovering what she needs. She enjoys reading self-help books instead of quit lit. Finding connections with other people and creating deep friendships was an unexpected perk Jen received in recovery. Jen's plan for recovery moving forward: working on her spiritual and self-discovery practice. Jen's parting piece of guidance: “play it forward” it is one tool that has never wavered for her. Keep your mind open and try a variety of things for your recovery. [01:03:47] Kris' outro: Kris shares a story about a recent vacation with his family and how it relates to his expectations and control. In today's episode we dive into this letter from a listener:I am writing you from probably the lowest point I have encountered in my creative journey. This year has been hard for me. I feel a bit lost in my business and so so tired. I have been making pottery for over a decade, selling for about 6 years and working full time as an artist for 2. And the struggle just never ends. I feel like I am pushing a rock up a hill and I keep waiting for the incline to level out so I can coast a little. I keep waiting for that break: for that post or feature that brings thousands of new people to my page, for the grant to be approved, for the gallery show to happen, for my community to establish… I am just desperately needing some ease from the grind. I am so grateful for the growth I have had. I am grateful to be selling my work after years and years of building that confidence, I so grateful for the kind words and support from my customers. I am also very privileged that I am partnered with a wonderful supportive husband who has a secure job and salary that we can rely on when sales have been dropping the past year due to inflation and economic anxiety. I am so lucky… but I am also starting to really lose confidence in myself.I am simply running out of stamina. As I see other businesses and accounts pop up around me and grow with such ease (of course I know I am only seeing the surface of these experiences) I can't help but wonder if I just am not good enough as an artist… or if I am just too idealist. Or really I am just complete s**t at the marketing? My vision isn't what sells quickly and I don't want to stray from my aesthetic. I don't want to play the trending social media games, I am too tired and those honestly aren't the least bit inspiring to me. I know I need to shift what I am doing because social media based sales just aren't working for me anymore, Instagram is no longer a place I feel inspired by and want to be spending my time. I just feel so lost and am not sure what my next steps should be.There is an other aspect to this too I need to throw in and would love to get your advice on: last year I was diagnosed with ADHD. I started using a light medical dose to help with this condition and it did wonders for my executive function. I felt like for the first time I was really getting my business, finances, schedule, all the little pieces that slip through the cracks under control! As I am writing this I am newly pregnant and desperately struggling with fatigue. Because I can no longer take medication it has thrown me for a loop and I feel more disoriented than ever before. I catch myself wasting hours of the day distracted from tasks. I am trying to study more information on ADHD and develop new strategies for coping. The more I study, the more “ah-ha” moments I have. I believe my ADHD has been a much bigger barrier in operating a business and managing a social media account than I was aware of.I apologize this is a lot of different elements (and I realize this letter is probably now long enough to be disqualified from being answered!) but I know Sara has been so open with her ADHD and you both experience chronic conditions that make you experts in running a business with varying levels of energy. You seem like the perfect people ask for guidance in this time. How can I right this ship and get back on track while this pregnancy is wrecking havoc on my emotions and energy? Are there any resources for creatives with ADHD you recommend Sarah? I would love to know more about your experiences transitioning into motherhood especially as my transition is coming at a time where I was already struggling with so much self doubt in my identity as an artist. I am a bit frightened right now to be honest.Thank you so so much for considering this letter.- Insecure, distracted, AND expectingIn today's episode we dive into this question, share our encouragement for when you find yourself running out of stamina in your business, why we believe honouring our humanness first is so important, and how we've both navigated seasons like this in our own business journey too.* Letters From A Hopeful Creative Substack* Submit your letter* More from Sara* Sara's Substack* More from Jen* Jen's Substack* Get Jen's Deep Dive KitLetters From A Hopeful Creative is produced by Sonics Podcasts This is a public episode. In today's episode we dive into this letter from a listener:I am hanging on your every word about Substack. I just can't seem to shake this question: Is Substack really right for my business? And if so, am I doing it right? How should I think about it and prioritize it among the many other things I could be doing with my limited time and energy? But I keep getting tangled up in this question: is substack _marketing_ for my business, a _product_ for my business, or simply an on-the-side creative outlet? If I'm being honest, I want it to be all three! I love the simplicity of it being everything at once. But let's get real. It seems like there's not much hope of Substack becoming a meaningful source of revenue, unless you've got a massive audience to begin with that you are transferring over from somewhere else. The typical price point is just too low to make the numbers make a real difference with a small audience.I wonder if you could help put Substack into perspective, in the context of a service-based business that already includes regular writing and podcasting. A business that's ready to pivot into one-to-many offerings. For a person who's sort of hooked, but also worried the promise of Substack is too good to be true.- LisaIn today's episode we dive into Lisa's question and share how we're using Substack in our business and why the platform is really just a playground to shape and use in whatever way feels aligned for us. In today's episode we dive into this letter from a listener:I'm an artist and graphic designer and I run a one-woman creative studio. Like Jen, I'm very intentional about not hiring staff. If/when I get to a certain stage I would like to hire a VA or studio manager, but for now it's just me. I've raised my rates over the last year, and I have a steady stream of work coming in, which is great and I'm very grateful for it. However being a service-based business, especially a one-woman show, there is a very clear cap on how much I'm able to earn providing services. I plan to keep raising my rates gradually, and I'm slowly starting to gain slightly higher-paying clients and am, getting better at saying no to low-paying jobs. But this feels like quite a slow strategy, at least just now when it's still just me. I also plan to set some time aside this year to make stock (vectors, illustrations and textures) to hopefully set up some passive income streams, although I know this can be tricky to get going.Do you have any ideas, strategies or suggestions for expanding income potential for a service-based business? There are three reasons I'm asking this: 1. I'd love to have more ease and breathing room around money. At the moment I'm able to pay my way each month but I still feel a lot of anxiety around my finances.2. It's my partner and my 10th anniversary next year and I want to treat him to an amazing holiday as a surprise. We joked about going to the Maldives, but I would LOVE if that could become a reality! 3. I want to help my parents, who after working hard their whole lives are still paying off their mortgage and aren't able to retire yet. I would love, love, LOVE to be able to help them pay off the mortgage so they can finally retire and enjoy life.Any advice you can give would be massively appreciated!- LauraIn today's episode we share our own experiences of expanding our income streams in our business, why it's also often impactful to prioritise simplifying our client business too, and our encouragement for creating 1-to-many income streams in your business in a way that works best for you.* Letters From A Hopeful Creative Substack* Submit your letter* More from Sara* Sara's Substack* More from Jen* Jen's Substack* Get Jen's Deep Dive KitAnd our first monthly private behind the scenes episode is now live if you'd love to become a paying subscriber. In today's episode we dive into this letter from a listener:Over the last year, I've found myself becoming less and less engaged and connected to Instagram as a form of marketing. I don't enjoy creating videos. I don't like being pressured into buying a blue tick just to stop my work being copied. But more importantly, it doesn't align with my values of a soul-centred approach to business and life, and honestly, it has been quite detrimental to my mental health as I've struggled with my physical health over the last year, comparing my reality to everyone else's highlight reel.My question to you Jen and Sara is, how else would you reach your audience in this current landscape if you moved away from Instagram? I'm not saying imagine it's gone all together, but more how would you create a business that is PURPOSELY not on Instagram, when it feels like everyone else is.I think we're told that Instagram ‘needs' to be integral and that ‘businesses can't survive without it' but businesses were thriving long before pictures in a grid were a thing!I'm currently on a break from Instagram to experiment and navigate this myself, but to have other people's opinions and thoughts would be amazing. And perhaps a little bit of the permission slip I'm seeking to create a business that works for me and my energy flow.- VicIn today's episode we share how and why neither of us rely on Instagram as a marketing platform, our thoughts on the shifting landscape of the platform, and encouragement for building and running a thriving business without relying on Instagram for growth and reach.* Letters From A Hopeful Creative Substack* Submit your letter* More from Sara* Sara's Substack* More from Jen* Jen's SubstackAnd our first monthly private behind the scenes episode is now live if you'd love to become a paying subscriber. In today's episode we dive into this letter from a listener:I'm building a supportive platform on Substack for therapists in private practice called 'Therapists Corner'. Therapists often work alone and I hope to create a space where they can find support, advice and guidance whenever they need to and have a genuine community. In part it will be educational around building up a private practice but i'd also like it to feel like their staff room, where they can take a five minute break or like they have a business best friend online. So as well as asking for support they might also answer questions for others too. It's hard to get going while it's being built up and theres not too much engagement I'm sure once it gets going it will be great it's just these early days. Also the problem with humans, even ones that are therapists is that we all have tricky brains and when you put us in groups we can become problematic and you could have an amazing group then it only takes one person to make you want to shut the whole thing down , or it might just take off in another direction with a life of it's own or become over complicated. How have you managed things when it's gone wrong, when you have encountered that one tricky person or what do you think you do to keep your communities engaged, welcoming and enjoyable? All of your community building ideas will be very welcome.- SarahIn today's episode we explore what we've learned from building our own engaged, welcoming, and thriving communities, why it's our job as the leaders of our business to set the tone and expectations within our communities, and how to navigate any tricky situations too.* Letters From A Hopeful Creative Substack* Submit your letter* More from Sara* Sara's Substack* More from Jen* Jen's SubstackAnd our first monthly private behind the scenes episode is now live if you'd love to become a paying subscriber. Yup it's true, Aldo and I made it 14 and a half years, but we couldn't make it through one f*ck*ng Scandoval! Then we get right into the hot mess that is the Vanderpump Rules season 10 Reunion. I hope you enjoy!

One of the things I love so much about this episode is that I believe it will hold up a mirror to some of your ingrained thought patterns - and offer a different alternative.Today on the podcast we're talking to Jennifer Szpigiel. She founded Becoming Iconic, a brand that includes an agency, coaching, a podcast (that I love), a magazine - and more! Jen has spent the last 18+ years raising businesses and babies. Her decision to jump into entrepreneurship has created multiple 7 figure businesses, memories made all over the world, and radical responsibility for how she spends her days. Our conversation was so rich and it includes:The real meaning of time freedomHow leaning into pleasure and joy NOW leads to more abundanceWhat is radical personal responsibility and why it's so critical to leadershipAnd more!My hope is that this conversation edges you a little (or a lot) out of your comfort zone.Connect with Jen:Jen's Website: https://becomingiconic.coFind Jen on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/becomingiconic/Work with Jen: https://becomingiconic.co/work-with-meMeeting your Iconic Self Meditation Download (scroll down): https://becomingiconic.coLinks You'll Love:Free: Dream Team Starter KitMy website: www.juliecalcote.comNo Sweat SOPs (use code SUMMER for $10 off)& Pitches to RichesInstagram: juliecalcoteobmSign Up for ClickUp
In today's episode we dive into this letter from a listener:Right now I'm taking a good hard look at what I can outsource in my business so that I can be free to do the stuff that I really love. Sara, you mentioned that you have an executive assistant, Jen do you ? If not, I'm really curious to know why not. I genuinely wonder whether it can potentially complicate the goal of a simple and spacious business when we employ people? On the other hand, thinking we can do everything ourselves more easily than outsourcing it can be a trap. I also wondered whether you both have ongoing sessions with your own business coaches or do you feel your work business buddies are enough?- DeniseIn today's episode we explore why Sara has intentionally built a team in her business and why Jen intentionally hasn't, the pros and cons of each path, and why the most important thing when it comes to outsourcing is making the most intentional decision for you and your business.* Letters From A Hopeful Creative Substack* Submit your letter* More from Sara* Sara's Substack* More from Jen* Jen's SubstackAnd Jen's flagship group program, Your Simple & Spacious Business, is currently open for enrolment until Monday June 5th if you'd love more guidance and support in building and running a business that truly works best for you.Letters From A Hopeful Creative is produced by Sonics Podcasts This is a public episode. In today's episode we dive into this letter from a listener:I'm so happy you two are back! I listened to your podcast a few years ago when I was dreaming about creating a business, and now I'm actually starting one, so it's perfect timing for me. I have a chronic illness that only allows me to work about 2 hours a day most days (although it fluctuates often from 0-4 hours). I just finished creating my website a few weeks ago, so I'm starting from scratch, and I'm trying to figure out how to manage the marketing side of things because I find social media extremely draining. Realistically, I think I can dedicate one day a week to marketing without it taking away too much creative time, so I'm wondering, where should I focus my energy? Are there any social platforms or tools where it's possible to just show up once a week and actually connect with people? I am a pretty extreme introvert, so anytime I try to do more than that, or a little each day instead, I just can't function. I need fully uninterrupted days to get into the creative flow. I have put some time into SEO that will hopefully start working in a few months. I've also started a blog and I'm posting each one to Pinterest, but I'm just wondering if you have any other ideas? I'm not looking for overnight results - I'm definitely in the slow lane, as Jen would say. I'd love to hear your thoughts.- ClaireIn today's episode we share our encouragement for how we would prioritise our marketing energy with limited time, why marketing is not a sure science but instead just one big experiment, and what marketing tasks we would prioritise at different stages of business too.* Letters From A Hopeful Creative Substack* Submit your letter* More from Sara* Sara's Substack* More from Jen* Jen's Substack* Get Jen's The Simple & Spacious Deep Dive KitAnd the beautiful illustration Emily Charlotte Powell sent to us:Letters From A Hopeful Creative is produced by Sonics Podcasts This is a public episode. In today's episode we dive into this letter from a listener:I am 6 years into running my business and I feel like I'm running out of steam. The beginning was hard, but then came the “Instagram high” with dozens of thousands of engaged followers. Everything felt so exciting and spacious, I felt like people wanted to see what I'm up to, follow my work and buy from me. Then the pandemic happened and it left me burnt out. For the past two years I was running on the momentum I generated at the beginning of my journey. But the momentum seems to have stopped. Now slowly coming back to myself and my business I can't help to feel like it's almost dead. For the past few months I'm working on different ideas to get it all back up and running but I noticed no one cares. I set up a Substack but the engagement is very low, sales are low and so is my mood. Long story short, my main concern is: did they only like me because they didn't know real me before and now that they do, they checked out and there's no hope left? How do you run a business when you don't feel like one of the popular girls anymore?- Unpopular OneIn today's episode we share our encouragement for today's letter writer, our perspective on audience engagement and behaviour evolving, and how we would prioritise re-engaging our audience and breathing fresh life back into our business.* Letters From A Hopeful Creative Substack* Submit your letter* More from Sara* Sara's Substack* More from Jen* Jen's SubstackLetters From A Hopeful Creative is produced by Sonics Podcasts This is a public episode. How to Build Your Product Ladder Why do you need a product ladder? How can you attract leads and increase sales even in uncertain economic times? A product ladder is a range of products varying in price and features. Product ladders make it easier for potential customers to get a sampling of your work or to jump in all the way. You can create a product ladder by breaking services into smaller chunks or offering products or services in bundles or packages. How do you get started building a product ladder? Join Jen and Shelley as they discuss how they are building their own product ladders and get their tips and tools to get it done quicker. Questions answered in this episode: How can you attract leads and increase sales even in uncertain economic times? Why do you need a product ladder? How do you get started building a product ladder? Key Insights You need to have a way to bring people in on a constant basis who are new. That will, after a few touch points, convert as clients. For wealth doesn't, neither does high-office, state or kingdom—rather, something else must be found . . . in the case of living, it is the knowledge of how to live. —EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES, 4.1.62–64 You have two essential tasks in life: to be a good person and to pursue the occupation that you love. Everything else is a waste of energy and a squandering of your potential. How does one do that? OK, that's a tougher question. But the philosophy we see from the Stoics makes it simple enough: say no to distractions, to destructive emotions, to outside pressure. Ask yourself: What is it that only I can do? What is the best use of my limited time on this planet? Try to do the right thing when the situation calls for it. Treat other people the way you would hope to be treated. And understand that every small choice and tiny matter is an opportunity to practice these larger principles. What are my tasks in this life? My tasks are to help older people share their message of wisdom, peace, and hope with the world by setting up a home studio and putting out content every week. This episode is a golden nugget bucket, a true gem if you are interested in understanding how to channel your energy on one channel to grow your business. I always thought that for SMEs, especially for those in slow growth service sectors, (where women business owners are over represented) networking is a real growth strategy when it is done right! Much stronger than social media! But in this episode, Jen Corcoran, founder of My Super Connector, showed me another way of thinking... Using social media, especially Linkedin as a networking platform! In traditional sense of networking, you need to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince, and it feels like it takes forever... sometimes years...to find the real network, create your tribe and get some return on investment. But when you use LinkedIn as a networking mean, things can be much bigger, faster and stronger! Jen talks about all this and many more things. She gave us all the inside tips and tricks on how to grow your business network on LinkedIn. We also talked about how to make choices when it comes to dedicating time to networking as an introvert and female founder and many other things:))) Including peri-menapause and how should you be choosing your battles and making sure that you are nurturing your entrepreneurial mindset continuously ... A very eclectic discussion with an AWESOME women entrepreneur! So it doesn't mean every time you have a “negative feeling” or “thought”, you need to discredit it because you are so charmed.”[8:08] “Whatever your habit is, if you just take it one little piece at a time, instead of overwhelming yourself with how long it's going to take and or how much you have to do, you'll be so much more successful.”[19:27] “... it's so rare, especially now that you get one on one with people or you're in a room with another human and I want to cherish that, you know, togetherness and not be always over here [on my phone].”[21:18] “... staying present for anybody is really a challenge because we are all being pulled in so many directions. And again, it's just that intention, you know, and just doing your best with it and not beating yourself up.”[23:02] “... you're not serving them if you're doing it and you do not want to do it. And if you're doing it just to please them and be liked, that's not a good reason.”Jen Sincero is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, speaker and motivational cattle prod who's helped countless people transform their lives with her products, seminars, and books. Everyone's got a little baggage. Is there a better way to make light of your junk than by making (or sharing) a meme about it? I think not. And so does my witty and winsome friend, Jen Piper. We met in college when she surfed on my couch and we had inverse-matching hair (see the full show notes to enjoy). She watched as I and several other friends got married before her and then when it was finally "her turn" her fiance called it off just days before the ceremony. Years later after getting over that "dodged bullet" (her words!) she met and married her fire-fighter husband only to be diagnosed with a brain tumor just shy of her 30th birthday (with two young girls in tow). She took her recovery time to start an accidental business that thrived on graphic tees and funny memes. Lemonade, I'd say. My friend has had her share of heartbreak, but in this chat we admit just how much of yourself you find after pain, mistakes and age, anyway. We recount some entertaining memories and confess how hard it can be to live your life under the lens of the social media microscope. Mostly, we talk candidly about baggage and moving beyond it. To #beboldandjustbeyou. Learn more about Jen Jen is a south Florida native who currently resides in Columbus, Ohio. She's a fire fighter wife and Mommy to two daughters (ages 7 and 8). She's a brain tumor survivor who started an impulsive clothing brand as a way to keep busy during recovery. She currently works as a graphic designer and social media manager. She enjoys writing, oversized sweatshirt season and is currently binge watching every season of Survivor in preparation to be on the show. You can follow her on Instagram here!
