Lucas lost all of Joe's money, and Empire Records is in danger of turning into a Music Town, but we mustn't fight....not today, not on Rex Manning day! This week we are putting on the soundtrack of the 90's and hanging with some up and coming stars in one of Brian's favorite movies, and we're mixing up several cocktails for the occasion! Join us as we throw a funeral for a friend, glue down some quarters, count blue cars, see Mark rock out with Gwar, and have a chat about Empire Records! This week's cocktails (Check this week's Lobby Bar for more!) comes from the Smallman Galley! https://www.instagram.com/drinkthemovies/ https://twitter.com/drinkthemovies https://www.facebook.com/drinkthemovies https://www.drinkthemovies.com
Pete Tolman, owner of Iron Born Pizza, first encountered Detroit-style pizza on a trip to Colorado. In this episode, he recounts his surprising reaction after discovering it in such an unlikely place and how he instantly knew that he had to bring it to Pittsburgh. Pete’s journey from Smallman Galley to Millvale and now back to the Strip District in his very own full-scale restaurant is an inspiring story rich with details and kernels of wisdom. His example of having a plan B is both humorous and insightful, as newly budding entrepreneurs can almost always benefit from having a back-up plan. Pete’s acknowledgement that he isn’t exactly sure what makes his restaurants so popular is transparent and refreshing. But one thing is for sure, there is a constant buzz that’s impossible to miss when you walk into his locations. If you haven’t tried Detroit-style pizza yet, this episode with have your mouth watering and you heading for your car to go grab some for yourself. If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. The Restaurant Industry was due for a new idea, and that’s exactly what Tyler Benson and Benjamin Mantica delivered when they co-founded Smallman Galley. Their food hall restaurant accelerator is the first of its kind in the United States. The space incubates four restaurant concepts at a time and drastically lowers the startup costs of a new culinary venture. Tyler and Ben are Navy Veterans who were inspired by world travels to bring innovative food and beverage concepts to the United States. They started in Pittsburgh and are laying plans to expand across the country. In this conversation, Tyler & Aaron discuss the origin of the company, who gets free meals at a restaurant, and how time spent at one of the Galleys sets a restaurant up for success.
