Getting behind the wheel in Pittsburgh is not for the faint of heart. From narrow streets to steep hills to ungodly merges, our city is challenging to navigate by car. Lucky for you, we teamed up with friend of the pod and former Uber driver Jakob Lazzaro to share 12 very important rules for driving in Pittsburgh and — of course — debate the efficacy of the Pittsburgh Left. Want to dive deeper into the history behind our city's quirky layout and driving rules? Check out WESA's reporting on our mismatched streets, frustrating on-ramps and Beltway System. Pittsburgh City Paper also has a great look at our Beltway. And don't miss the 99% Invisible episode about trying to create a GPS that speaks Pittsburghese. The Democrats have been camping out in Pittsburgh ahead of tonight's Presidential debate, and they paused briefly to visit Penzeys Spices. We're talking about how folks have responded to all the attention on PA, plus there are a bunch of new films and TV shows you can watch featuring the Steel City and its people right now. We're even counting Cam Heyward on “Hot Ones” and Michael Keaton on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” We always cite our sources: Steelers DT Cam Heyward took on “Hot Ones” and shared his favorite Pittsburghese.  During her stay in Pittsburgh, pro-Palestine protesters demonstrated outside of VP and presidential candidate Kamala Harris' hotel.  Harris visited Penzeys Spices in the Strip District. Penzeys owner, Bill Penzey, is staunchly anti-Trump, and there's even a section on the spice store's website dedicated to criticizing the Republican Party.  Watch the presidential debate on ABC News Live at 9 p.m. Eastern. Pittsburgh Film Office director Dawn Keezer is celebrating 30 years in the city.  Check out the new sound stages being built in Rankin, and our No. 13 ranking in Movie Maker Magazine's top places to live and work as a filmmaker.  Dawn Keezer's been on the podcast to talk about film tax credits, projects in Pittsburgh, and the film curse that we finally broke. Pittsburgh-born Micheal Keaton and super fan Seth Meyers talk about their “irrational confidence” as Pittsburgh sports fanatics. “The Pitt,” an upcoming medical drama is filming around Allegheny General this week, but the studio's getting sued by the estate of “ER” creator Michael Crichton. The lawsuit alleges that “The Pitt” is a reboot of “ER” made without permission. Prefer reminiscing about old TV shows instead of watching new ones? In the 1930s, renowned journalist Ernie Pyle defamed our city streets. “Pittsburgh is the cockeyedest city in the United States,” he wrote. “Physically it is absolutely irrational. It must have been laid out by a mountain goat.” If you've driven around the city lately, you know his assessment is still accurate. Friend of the pod and former Uber driver Jakob Lazzaro joins us to talk about why, share twelve very important rules for navigating our narrow, hilly streets, and – of course – debate the efficacy of the Pittsburgh Left. Wendy Sheridan and Robin Renée are back after summer break for the 2024 Season 2 of The Leftscape! Featured guest Jonah Minkoff-Zern (he/him) is the co-director of Public Citizen's Democracy Campaign. He has organized nationwide mobilizations to challenge ongoing threats to democracy from former President Donald Trump and his allies, coordinated grassroots activities to pass federal voting rights and democracy reforms, and mobilized national action for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. He has led and supported state-based efforts to win voting rights, public financing to protect election officials and prevent artificial intelligence deepfakes in elections, and coordinated national support for the Second Chances Florida ballot initiative, which restored the eligibility to vote to Floridians with felony convictions. Hear him speak with Wendy about the many aspects of the Democracy Campaign's important work. In This Fortnight I Learned, Wendy recounts the controvery over which of two simiarly-named people originated Labor Day in 1882 and Robin discusses the first term entered into their personal Pittsburghese dictionary. In News, there is so much to tackle that a great deal more of it is covered in What the Bleep Happened This Summer? on Patreon. X offline in Brazil, the summer COVID surge, the upcoming Harris vs. Trump presidential debate, members of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland elected in Germany, an action against budget cuts at the Rahway Public Library, and the Oasis reunion are some of the stories that made the show. In The Blanket Fort, Robin and Wendy check in on what they're doing to stay informed without getting overwhelmed. Wendy nominates Frances Perkins as Lefty of the Week. Cookies for MinistryShe grew up in the southern shadows of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and if you carefully listen to Morgan Rubosky, you can still hear some of her lifelong Pittsburghese language spill out in a conversation. As an introvert, Morgan always imagined she'd stay close to home for her college education, but when she heard about Cedarville University — located four hours from her Pleasant Hills Borough home — she immediately felt at peace about calling it home. Then, after one visit to campus with her mom, she knew this was God's choice for her.Four years later, Morgan graduated with a degree in youth ministry, and her life has since been filled with ministry opportunities in the most unusual ways.First, she embarked on the biggest adventure of her life – The World Race, an 11-month missions program that covered 11 different countries. She didn't know any of her ministry companions until a 10-day training camp leading up to the race. She experienced life in the most primitive ways as she journeyed through South Africa, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chile sharing the Gospel. American conveniences were traded for living out of a backpack and washing her clothes by hand.Life didn't get any easier when she returned to the United States at the end of November 2019, just months before COVID shut down the world. For the world traveler, being confined to her personal residence was tough. COVID was as much a culture shock to Morgan as her 11-month, 11-country ministry. So, with her family's cookie business on the doorstep of closing, Morgan decided to take over the business, change the name, and use it to continue her support of missions. Morgan uses her business, Church Street Cookies, to minister to college students, support missionaries, and encourage ministries with her excess funds from cookie sales. And, with a storefront business in the heart of Cedarville, business is thriving, and the Gospel is going forward. Listen to hear Morgan share her story on the Cedarville Stories Podcast.

Boys will be boys... What a disarming way to describe when a guy is, well, being a dick. For some, toxic masculinity is an overarching term used to show how woke you are, but the behavior behind it contains way more nuance. Pittsburgh comedian and co-owner of the Burning Bridges Comedy Club Amanda Averell, joins David and Steve to dive deeper into what the term really means, why men behave the way they do, and break down why and when it's funny. In this episode, we talk about: -Pittsburghese. -Amanda's love for all things Disney. -Her bit on human history being preserved in screenshots. -Dick pics before camera phones. -Mick Foley. -Fox News' Stepford anchor problem. -Women in history who ditched gender norms. -The scarcity mindset of not having enough seats at the table. -The underrepresentation of female comedians. -Ideas for how to get more women to step onstage and perform stand-up. -Beating bullies to the punchline. -How Amanda began her comedy career. -The caveman brain's role in toxic masculinity. -Daniel Sloss' brilliant HBO special "X" and its takedown of toxic men. -Millennial men being more open to showing emotions. -Toxic masculinity being a cover for insecurity and lack of emotional intelligence. -Adjusting your personality to perpetuate an onstage persona. -Is it okay to punch down on someone who is punching down? -And more!!! After going to Beaver Falls for the holidays with his girlfriend Olga, Tim discusses the trip and all of the delicious food they ate in Pennsylvania. (1:00)Random Segment: Using Random.org's GPS Coordinates tool, Tim landed on a ghost town in Canada that he did some research on and talks about towns being created because of an industry. (10:10)The Western Pennsylvania dialect gets called Pittsburghese a lot, but the entire region has their own way of talking. Tim looks into his home region's use of English and makes observations about different words and how we come up with new words. (16:20)The Vault: A writing assignment from 2010 comes out of the Vault this week where Tim wrote about myths and stars. The paper clearly didn't have a ton of effort put into it, so Tim has fun critiquing his work from nine years ago. Don't overwhelm yourself by worrying about 400 issues or tap out because the Presidential Election is too taxing on your mind. Focus on improving yourself in 2020 and allowing that growth to transfer to others. (45:11)

Summary: The Jagoff duo headed to the Clemente Bridge for the 4th annual Picklesburgh celebration of all things pickles.  From bacon coated delights to juice drinking contests and even some pickle-flavored whiskey, this event never disappoints.  We chatted with Leigh White of Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership about the progression of the green scene, as well as Mairin Petrone of the other green scene: The Pittsburgh Irish Festival.  Episode Music: The Screaming Orphans,  Sponsor: Total Sports Enterprises loves summer. Lots of Pgh celebs cruising in a car with us jagoffs for a cause. GET YOUR GREEN READY: The YaJagoff podcast doesn't want to leave listeners green with envy as we prepare for the Irish Festival THIS September at the Riverplex at Sandcastle. Enjoy custom and tradition at its finest while listening to national and local Irish performers including a visit from international sensations, The Screaming Orphans. Plus, eat, drink, shop, dance and do some Ancient Celtic Axe Throwing as we celebrate the Pittsburgh Irish Festival. Visit pghirishfestival.org for details and ticket information. Best part- you don't have to be Irish to have fun at the Festival.  6:06 Mairin Petrone:  Mairin steps away from the Pittsburgh Irish Festival tent serving bacon, cheese and hotdog pickles to talk about the staples at the Irish Festival in September like geneology, crafting and great Irish food as well as new options like axe throwing and a visit from the Pukas. Plus, expect the pickle at the Irish Festival! 18:27 Leigh White: As soon as the PDP began the festivities on Friday, a crowd of folks stormed the bridge to get a taste of Picklesburgh, an estimated 75K pickleheads that is. While Leigh proudly owns the pickle frenzy, she explains that it is not a trend since many downtown restaurants serve the pickle in unique ways year round.  18:27 The Screaming Orphans: Originally recorded at last year's Pittsburgh Irish Festival. Yinz ready for another episode of re:verb? On today's show, we interview Dr. Barbara Johnstone, professor of English and Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University, and one of the foremost scholars of an American English dialect known as Pittsburghese. Our conversation touches on the history and features of Pittsburghese, how it has helped to forge various local identities in the city and beyond, and more broadly, how the ways that we talk about language influences our use of language. We discuss Professor Johnstone's career, how she became interested in place-based registers, and to what extent her own work may have influenced public perceptions of Pittsburgh speech. Finally, we end with a light-hearted discussion of human-animal communication, and Alex develops his folk theory about regional dialects of cat-speak.Works & Concepts Cited in this Episode:Hawhee, Debra. This book explores the history of Pittsburghese, the language of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area as it is imagined and used by Pittsburghers. Pittburghese is linked to local identity so strongly that it is alluded to almost every time people talk about what Pittsburgh is like, or what it means to be a Pittsburgher. But what happened during the second half of the 20th century to reshape a largely unnoticed way of speaking into this highly visible urban "dialect"? In this book, sociolinguist Barbara Johnstone focuses on this question. Treating Pittsburghese as a cultural product of talk, writing, and other forms of social practice, Johnstone shows how non-standard pronunciations, words, and bits of grammar used in the Pittsburgh area were taken up into a repertoire of words and phrases and a vocal style that has become one of the most resonant symbols of local identity in the United States today. Barbara Johnstone is Professor of Rhetoric and Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University. She is the author of Repetition in Arabic Discourse (Benjamins, 1990), Stories, Community, and Place: Narratives from Middle America (Indiana UP, 1990), The Linguistic Individual (Oxford, 1996), and two textbooks. Her research has explored how people evoke and shape places in talk and what can be learned by taking the perspective of the individual on language and discourse.

Jen is egg Yoda. Call her Yolka. (Do you say “yolk,” with the L or “yoke,” without?) She runs the diner on Huevoba. She’s an 8th degree black belt in chewdo. The breakfast Buddha. The Jehova of the ova. The french fried hakuna frittata. And Maddy? A scrambled eggs Jedi master, Maddy is. She’s received the congressional medal of eggcellence. Really, people, these chicks can cook some eggs, and I count myself, before I hatch, among the eggceptionally fortunATE (albu)men to roost among such protein prowess. Even Kate, the crack-head Springer Spaniel, loves the eggs. However, Jen simply can’t handle the sound of the licking. (If Kate were a foley artist, her egg-plate-licking might be used for a carcass-sluruping octopus monster, or perhaps a National Geographic special on the movement of slugs on the ground with ultra-high-definition recording equipment. I’m sure you can come up with something grosser, or funnier. Take a listen.) We talk about asiago (“Awe-zee-awe-goh” in Pittsburghese), lying about the Cheese-Its, and shame eating. We stumble upon a profound insight: Just because your name is Gary Glitter doesn’t mean you’ll end up in jail for child porn. But there he sits, perhaps composing, “Rock and Roll, Part 3” while clinching his anal sphincter for dear life. Unrelated to Mr. Glitter and his horrendous behavior, we land on puberphonia. Odd, that. But I digress. And what did we drink? Two delicious brews. Like, exceptionally delicious, people. Get these. They’re fairly easily obtainable in Pennsylvania and New York. Voodoo Hoodoo and Southern Tier Crème Brule. And the music you’ll be enjoying? “Egg Song” and “Egg Man.” They have parallel grammatical structures, but are otherwise unrelated in almost every way conceivable. Have fun, we present to you, “The Jehova of the Ova.”    (You know nothing, egg man.)

This week on "A Way with Words": Your telephone is for talking, right? Or is it? We're guessing it's been a while since you sat next to a telephone waiting for it to ring. In fact, maybe you're one of those people who HATE to see that voicemail message light blinking. But for many of us, waiting for a text is a different. Also, California may be the "Dude!" capital of the country, but the term "dude" actually comes from New York City. And where exactly do you eat tweezer food? Plus, donning and doffing our clothes, tweezer food, the origin of kowtow, emcee, Arby's, and -orama, and modern etiquette for wedding invitations.FULL DETAILSSorry, Californians—the word dude actually comes from New York City, and goes all the way back to the 1800s.To kowtow, as in "to agree in an excessively eager or annoying way," comes from a Chinese term that means "to bow extremely low out of respect," from words that literally mean "knock head."Flight crews have a word for colleagues who check into a hotel, slam the door behind them, lock it shut, and don't re-emerge until checkout time. They're called slam-clickers.Addressing a wedding invitation to Mr. and Mrs. John Smith is pretty old-fashioned. It's more than appropriate these days to address both a husband and wife by their respective names. But if you're inviting someone who prefers the old-fashioned style, best to honor their preference. When flight attendants use the terms feather, leather, or fin, they're talking about "chicken, beef, or fish."Our Quiz Guy John Chaneski has sandwiched together the first letters of first and last names for a trivia game about famous folks.Long before English speakers adopted the suffix -orama, as in Scoutorama and smell-o-rama, there was French word panorama referring to "a great display or spectacle." Panorama comes from Greek words that mean "whole view." University of Alabama professor Michael Piccone details the development panorama in French in his book Anglicisms, Neologisms, and Dynamic French. In English, panorama first referred to spectacular, long paintings slowly unscrolled before 19th-century audiences, and later inspired other words that likewise ended in -orama.Firefighters don and doff their equipment, words that derive from "do on" and "do off." This is the show we've been waiting to record! Koz and Goldie had the pleasure of sitting down one-on-one (well...two-on-one) with Dr. Barbara Johnstone, the AUTHORITY on Pittsburghese (best subject ever)!!! This interview was an excellent experience for Koz and Goldie, and we thank Barbara once again for joining us -- hope you all enjoy the result. Other topics in this show include: Details on the 2015 BurghLife SnowCrawl Bar Tour -- finally released! * Koz and Goldie discuss holiday/Christmas traditions * Are YOU finished with your holiday shopping yet? * People (OK, fine -- guys, primarily) who wait until Christmas Eve to shop * Soup made with...sauerkraut juice (mmm) * Stocking stuffers * and more!

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over

In English, panorama first referred to spectacular, long paintings slowly unscrolled before 19th-century audiences, and later inspired other words that likewise ended in -orama.Firefighters don and doff their equipment, words that derive from "do on" and "do off." New York City firefighters' buff-colored uniforms apparently inspired our word buff, as in a fan -- a reference to fire enthusiasts who would show up in buff-colored coats to watch firefighters at work.A caller from Burlington, Vermont, has observed a slight change in the language of flight attendants' instructions, replacing your with that.
