“Empire Records” bombed in 1995, got panned by critics, and spent the next thirty years becoming a cult classic — which tells you something about what reviews are actually measuring. Comics writer and Book Riot contributor Jessica Plummer joins Matthew Fox to revisit the film with real affection and ask what makes it hold up, and what happens when you look at it a little more closely. They get into why the ensemble works even though there are too many characters, why the rooftop finale earns its feeling even when the plot math doesn't add up, and what the film's “damn the man” spirit actually rests on — because the movie is very confident that selling out is bad and independent music is good, and it never quite explains why. The conversation holds genuine love for the film alongside an honest look at its blind spots, which is more or less what “Empire Records” itself is trying to do with its characters.Full show notes and resourcesConnect with Jessica: jessicaplummerwrites.com**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. We celebrate our favorite holiday by analyzing the movie Empire Records, and then we decide the show isn't long enough and we add in every version of High Fidelity too.
Empire Records (1995) was chosen by Patreon supporter Nick, and it represents a perfect snapshot of mid-90s youth culture wrapped inside a modest studio comedy. Directed by Allan Moyle and produced by Regency Enterprises for Warner Bros., the film was developed during a period when studios were eager to tap into the alternative music scene and Generation X attitudes. Rather than focusing on blockbuster spectacle, the production centered on character-driven storytelling and the energy of independent record store culture, something that resonated strongly with the decade's music-obsessed audiences.Filming took place primarily in Wilmington, North Carolina, with production designers transforming a local storefront into the now-iconic Empire Records shop. The cast featured a mix of emerging young actors, many of whom would go on to have prominent careers in film and television. Although the movie underperformed during its initial theatrical release, it found new life on home video and cable television throughout the late 1990s. Over time, Empire Records developed a passionate cult following, becoming one of the defining nostalgia pieces for fans of 90s alternative culture and music-driven coming-of-age films.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISOne record store. One unforgettable day. And a group of employees who refuse to let the music stop. When a tight-knit crew of misfits faces the possibility of losing the place that means everything to them, emotions run high, tempers flare, and secrets start spilling out. Over the course of one chaotic day, friendships are tested, dreams collide, and the soundtrack of a generation plays loud.Empire Records — where the music is loud, the drama is louder, and the day will change everything.FUN FACTSEmpire Records was released during the height of the 1990s alternative rock boom, featuring a soundtrack packed with era-defining artists. The film helped popularize the phrase “Damn the man, save the Empire!”, which became a lasting cult quote among fans.Several cast members, including Liv Tyler and Renée Zellweger, were early in their careers when the film was released. The movie's soundtrack album became more commercially successful than the film itself, selling strongly throughout the 1990s.Many scenes in the film were trimmed or removed from the theatrical cut, with additional material later appearing in extended versions.October 8th has become known among fans as “Rex Manning Day,” inspired by one of the film's most memorable in-universe events. The movie is frequently cited as a cult classic of Generation X cinema, capturing the attitudes and anxieties of 90s youth culture. The fictional Empire Records store was inspired by the independent record shops that thrived before digital music changed the industry.Over the years, the film has inspired fan screenings, themed parties, and annual celebrations tied to its cultural references.Despite its modest box office, the movie's reputation has grown significantly thanks to home video and streaming-era rediscovery.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
Gin Blossoms scored a surprise hit with their second album New Miserable Experience. However, that success was bittersweet. Most of the songs were written by Doug Hopkins who was fired from the band while making the album due to his increased unreliability due to his alcoholism. A&M Records made things worse by making him sign over his royalties despite the fact he played on the majority of the release. Hopkins committed suicide in 1993 so, despite a top 10 hit from the soundtrack to Empire Records, it was a while before another Gin Blossoms album came out. When it did the title pretty much said it all.

All-round icon and legendary frontman of THE CRUEL SEA, Tex Perkins steps into The Last Video Store to pick out some gritty classics, unexpected gems and the stunning new remake of a century old classic. We dig into the cinematic moments that shaped him, swap tales about VHS treasures, and explore how The Cruel Sea’s “The Honeymoon Is Over” found its way onto the soundtrack of EMPIRE RECORDS. It’s a rollicking conversation about movies, music, and the moods that connect them. Alexei has not stopped listening to the new album from Tex and The Cruel Sea, STRAIGHT INTO THE SUN, all year… it comes highly recommended. On this episode, we are joined by all three members of the legendary Ape Hangers. At the end of June, we did a zoom interview with Pete Sjostedt, Bob Kiah, and Dennis McCarthy — better known as Ape Hangers — for a fun, free-flowing conversation. These guys are not only amazing musicians but longtime friends and all-around great people. At the time, we were a little vague about what was on the horizon, but now I can finally let the cat out of the bag: Ape Hangers are officially back with a brand-new EP and single coming soon on Rum Bar Records. It's been over 20 years since their incredible self-titled second album and even longer since their debut on A&M Records, which featured the unforgettable “I Don't Want To Live Today,” famously included in the cult classic film Empire Records. And here's the really exciting part — the band is playing their first Boston show in more than two decades on Saturday, August 23 at 3 PM at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain. They'll be sandwiched between two Boston rock staples, The Dogmatics and Stop Calling Me Frank, making it a powerhouse lineup for anyone who loves real, gritty, high-energy rock 'n' roll. It's time for another installment of Mike Makes Mike Watch! This time around, Mike D is continuing our accidental series on the films of Roland Emmerich by making Smith watch 1998's GODZILLA, while Smith is making Mike D catch up with a '90s slacker favorite, EMPIRE RECORDS!

The Class of '95 graduates this week with a look at one of that year's most memorable cult hits--and biggest flops: Empire Records!Allan Moyle's bewildering follow-up to his generational anthem, Pump up the Volume, tracks a day in the life of several record store employees whose love lives and futures are as questionable as their tastes in music. Featuring a cast packed with soon-to-be-famous young actors, the offbeat comedy is known more for its memes (yes, this is where "Rex Manning Day" comes from) than its overall quality. Is it still a flannel-draped cringe-fest, three decades on? [School of Movies 2025] A cult favourite hangout movie about working in a CD shop in the mid-90s. This one was directed by Allan Moyle, who previously helmed another music-centric, coming-of-age teen drama that should have been way more of a hit; Pump Up the Volume (1990). Statistically almost none of you have seen this, as it's the kind of movie you need a good friend to sit you down with after hearing that you've never seen it, and immediately declared "We're watching this!" Well, we are that friend today, and we are going to detail why this one is worthy of love. It's painfully white, extremely straight and concerns itself with the now-antiquated dichotomy of MTV marketability versus independent spirit, but considering Spotify Killed the Video Star, the themes are still relevant, and the ragtag cast of teens are quirky enough to make this a breezy, endlessly-quotable rewatch. Damn The Man, save The Empire.
Mark and Erik talk about their favorite movie bosses from Empire Records, Support the Girls, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Way, Way Back, and Greyhound. Enjoy!
This episode, we've asked our podfather Rob Harvilla to pick his perfect 90s British Rock song: “A Girl Like You” by Edwyn Collins. Teams' controversial ticket price hikes after poor seasons sparked debate, with calls for discounted tickets as a remedy. Season ticket holders voiced frustrations, and dynamic pricing was criticized. C-Lo's update followed, but not before discussing his fundraising efforts for the Five Borough Bike Tour, including a bizarre slap-related idea. The Knicks' loss, Allen Lazard's potential trade, and Aaron Rodgers' Giants rumors were covered. Ochocinco's relationship advice and Dan Graziano's Rodgers take added to the discussion. The hour concluded with a humorous look at WFAN's newsroom cleanup for a visiting client, reminiscent of "Empire Records," and a mention of Celine Dion's appearance at a TGL event.
Hour 1 With Boomer absent, Gio and Jerry took over, discussing Jerry's return from Rutgers' crushing defeat at Purdue and the Knicks' loss to the Warriors. Speculation arose regarding Karl Anthony-Towns' absence, with Gio noting his girlfriend's "F Cancer" post. They likened the Knicks' current struggles to the Yankees' era against the Astros, and empathized with the Dallas Mavericks' misfortunes. C-Lo provided updates, highlighting the Knicks' low energy and a near-miss for Jennifer Hudson courtside. They also covered Aaron Rodgers' & the Giants, Jared Allen's Jets criticism, and a Jason Giambi home run ball auction, which sparked debate about its value and led to prank calls to Mike Francesa. Hour 2 Saquon Barkley's record-breaking contract dominated the discussion, prompting reflections on John Mara's "Hard Knocks" appearance, with differing opinions on whether it reflected poorly on Mara or Joe Schoen. The Giants' quarterback strategy, including potential interest in Aaron Rodgers and rumored disinterest in Shedeur Sanders, was also a hot topic. C-Lo's update covered the Knicks' loss, LeBron James's historic scoring milestone, Rutgers' defeat, and the Islanders' victory. The hour concluded with a viral video of John Daly's unique lifestyle, showcasing his impressive golf skills while consuming vodka and cigarettes. Hour 3 Teams' controversial ticket price hikes after poor seasons sparked debate, with calls for discounted tickets as a remedy. The hour concluded with a humorous look at WFAN's newsroom cleanup for a visiting client, reminiscent of "Empire Records," and a mention of Celine Dion's appearance at a TGL event. Hour 4 Note: The last segment had a lot of music which streaming won't allow us to use in the podcast. So the music ain't there The hour opened with Al's unusual "GROK" therapy and Gio's mysterious text messages. A viral video featuring Jerry and Peter Schwartz discussing the new alphabet song surfaced. C-Lo's update included Howie Roseman's Super Bowl analogy, the Devils' loss, and Frank The Tank's high-pitched reaction. Mike Francesa's past pope coverage provided comedic relief, and his Jason Giambi prank call segment was highlighted as the "Moment of The Day." The show concluded with Josh Allen's bachelor party at the TGL, attended by Sam Darnold, and a reminder about the significance of the auctioned Jason Giambi home run ball.
