He will challenge incumbent Austin Thompson, focusing on keeping taxes low, supporting diverse housing, and aiding small businesses. A Lawrenceville resident, Travis has served as a poll worker and on the city’s Financial Review Citizen Committee. Married for 41 years, he values community ties, Georgia Gwinnett College, and small business growth. His campaign emphasizes a safe, vibrant future for Lawrenceville. STORY 2: Gwinnett man killed, woman injured in shooting at Norcross area hotel A shooting at the Horizon Inn & Suites in Gwinnett County late Tuesday left 29-year-old Andre Jones dead and a woman injured. Police found Jones with a gunshot wound to the chest; he later died at the hospital. The woman, an apparent bystander, sustained a leg injury but was not involved in the altercation. Detectives are investigating the motive and pursuing leads. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Gwinnett police or Crime Stoppers anonymously. The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. at the hotel on Dawson Blvd. Police continue to seek answers in this tragic case. STORY 3: Socialist group to hold immigration protest in downtown Lawrenceville Protestors will gather in downtown Lawrenceville on Saturday afternoon to oppose immigration raids and arrests, organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation. The "Hands Off Immigrants" protest will take place at 2 p.m. at Bicentennial Plaza, a busy area near Lawrenceville Lawn. The group advocates for socialism, criticizing capitalism for creating a "repressive state" and endorsing revolutionary change. Police have warned of potential traffic disruptions from 2 to 6 p.m. but pledged neutrality while ensuring safety. The event follows a tense immigration protest in DeKalb County last weekend, where tear gas was used, and arrests, including a journalist, were made. STORY 7: Georgia Senate Republicans vote on new leadership amid big shuffle The Georgia Senate is undergoing a major leadership shakeup as Republicans elected Sen. Anavitarte, serving since 2021, steps into the third-highest Senate role, leaving his caucus chair position vacant. Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Firefighter Injured As Early Morning House Fire Displaces Family Of 11 In Lawrenceville A Lawrenceville home caught fire early Wednesday after a lightning strike, displacing a family of 11 and injuring a firefighter. Fire crews arrived at 2:08 a.m. to find flames in the attic. While battling the blaze, the roof collapsed, injuring a firefighter who was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries. The family safely evacuated after spotting the fire, and the Red Cross is assisting them. Firefighters controlled the blaze by 2:30 a.m., using multiple units to prevent further damage. Officials stress the importance of fire escape plans and offer community education resources for safety. STORY 2: Gwinnett police launch summer public safety initiative The Gwinnett County Police Department launched a summer safety initiative on May 20 to boost officer visibility, reduce crime, and enhance community engagement. Key efforts include increased patrols in high-traffic areas like malls and parks, daily crime suppression operations, and visible cruise lights on patrol cars. A major focus is community engagement through weekly Chief’s Walks, where residents can meet police leaders, share feedback, and build trust. The initiative aims to ensure a safe, proactive summer while fostering stronger relationships between officers and the community. STORY 3: Gwinnett celebrates grand re-opening of homeless services center and shelter Gwinnett County celebrated the reopening of an expanded homeless outreach center in Norcross, operated by the Latin American Association (LAA) and HTS. Originally opened in 2021 but closed due to flood damage, the center now offers comprehensive services, including a youth drop-in center, a shelter for young mothers, food, clothing, and hygiene facilities. Staff, many with lived homelessness experience, provide case management, housing navigation, and life skills training. The center aims to address rising homelessness, especially among working families and youth, with a focus on stabilizing lives. The $1.2M annual operation relies on grants and donations to sustain its mission. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: STORY 4: Kemp touts proposed Georgia Power rate freeze Georgia Power's plan to freeze rates for three years, announced this week, was praised by Gov. Brian Kemp as beneficial for customers and Georgia's economic growth. The agreement, pending Public Service Commission (PSC) approval, cancels a planned rate case and follows three rate hikes in recent years due to rising electricity demand. Critics argue the freeze won't prevent increases tied to fuel and hurricane recovery costs, which the PSC will address next year. Kemp dismissed claims of political timing, emphasizing the freeze's role in attracting businesses. A public hearing is set for June 26, with a vote on July 1. STORY 5: Philadelphia Winn Chapter DAR awards Good Citizens and American History Essay Contest Winners Nine Gwinnett County high school students were honored by the Philadelphia Winn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for their citizenship and writing skills. The DAR Good Citizen Award recognized seniors for dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism, while the American History Essay Contest awarded students for essays on historical topics judged for accuracy, originality, and grammar. Winners received certificates, medals, and monetary awards. The chapter, which meets monthly in Lawrenceville, encourages young people to participate in these contests promoting civic values and historical awareness. GDP Script/ Top Stories for May 8th Publish Date: May 8th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Thursday, May 8th and Happy birthday to Bill Cowher ***05.08.25 - BIRTHDAY – BILL COWHER*** I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Gwinnett increasing traffic signal contract by more than $13 million Kemp won't run for U.S. Senate in 2026 Lawrenceville changing trash pickup times because of summer heat Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on medication All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett increasing traffic signal contract by more than $13 million Gwinnett County commissioners approved a $19.95 million agreement to enhance traffic signals and intelligent transportation systems, up from the original $6.67 million contract. The increase, funded by state grants and a 2023 special sales tax, will allow for extensive upgrades, including replacing poles, installing detector loops, maintaining signals, and implementing advanced traffic management systems. Transportation Director Lewis Cooksey highlighted the expanded funding’s role in significantly boosting the county’s ongoing traffic signal improvement efforts. STORY 2: Kemp won't run for U.S. Senate in 2026 Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced he will not run for the U.S. Senate in 2026, leaving the race against Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff wide open. Kemp, seen as the GOP's strongest contender, cited family considerations and pledged to support a strong Republican nominee. Ossoff, considered vulnerable, has raised over $11 million this year, setting a record for a Senate incumbent. Democrats called Kemp's decision a setback for Republicans, while GOP hopefuls now scramble to fill the void in a race critical to Senate control. STORY 3: Lawrenceville changing trash pickup times because of summer heat Lawrenceville has implemented a summer trash pickup schedule, running from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday, to protect sanitation workers from extreme heat. Residents must place trash on the curb by 6 a.m. on collection days, with the city recommending doing so the night before. While pickup days remain unchanged, early morning noise from trash trucks is expected. The schedule will continue through October 2. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: STORY 4: Snellville begins construction on new Briscoe Park community center Construction has begun on Snellville’s long-awaited 34,000-square-foot community center at T.W. Briscoe Park, following a groundbreaking ceremony last week. The $11.3 million facility, two decades in the making, is set to open in summer 2026. It will include two basketball courts, an indoor walking track, multi-purpose rooms, an aerobics room, and an outdoor pavilion. STORY 5: Grayson will pay county more for tax billing Grayson will continue using the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner’s Office for property tax billing through 2028 but at a higher cost. The per-parcel fee will rise from $1.80 to $3.10, with $2.10 covering county expenses and $1 compensating Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell, a new addition to the contract. This 72% increase follows a 2021 agreement, with the updated terms reflecting changes in how cities negotiate tax billing contracts. The new deal ensures Grayson’s tax services for the 2025-2028 tax years. Clint Dixon, expands the High Demand Apprenticeship Program to include apprenticeship sponsors, allowing them to receive funding upon successful completion. A juvenile called 911, reporting an argument between a man and woman. Officers arrived to find the woman deceased, while the suspect had fled on foot. The juveniles in the home were unharmed and unrelated to the victim or suspect. Police believe the incident was isolated, involving individuals who knew each other. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers for a potential cash reward. STORY 2: Discovery High football team takes part in Family Promise bed races to help make a community impact Discovery High’s football team, led by Coach Roy Groshek, is fostering a positive culture by engaging in community events ahead of spring practice starting May 1. The Titans participated in a pep rally at a local elementary school and the 14th annual Bed Race in Lawrenceville, benefiting Family Promise of Gwinnett, which raised $36,000 to combat homelessness. The team finished second in the youth division, with Principal Robert Maffeo steering their bed. Groshek emphasized the importance of community involvement and rewarding players who excel academically and athletically. Spring practice culminates in a scrimmage on May 15 at Seckinger. STORY 3: Lilburn and Norcross homestead exemption bills awaiting decision from governor Lilburn and Norcross residents await Gov. Brian Kemp’s decision on two bills, House Bill 761 and House Bill 772, which could lead to referendums this fall on new or increased homestead tax exemptions. HB 761 proposes a $5,000 exemption for Lilburn homeowners and $10,000 for those 65 and older, while HB 772 would codify Norcross’s escalating senior exemptions, raising the maximum from $45,000 to $90,000 for homeowners aged 65+.
