Must's CEO named Citizen of the Year

Ike Reighard, senior pastor of Piedmont Church and CEO of MUST Ministries, was named the Marietta Citizen of the Year Thursday by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Reighard was surprised with the honor at the chamber's Marietta council luncheon following Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin's State of the City address. As Tumlin announced Reighard as the Citizen of the Year, the pastor shook his head in disbelief. Tumlin cited the famous New Testament verse, Matthew 25:35 — “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,” — to describe Reighard's service to the community. Reighard joined MUST Ministries in 2011. The organization provides assistance to families and individuals in need, from food drives and fundraisers to the Hope House Emergency Shelter, which sleeps 136 residents. After receiving a standing ovation, Reighard made his way to the front of the room and accepted the award from Tumlin and Andy Gaines, the 2022 Marietta Area Council director. Two former Amazon employees who worked at an Amazon warehouse in Smyrna pleaded guilty after being accused of stealing nearly $10 million from the company, federal prosecutors announced Thursday. The defendants stole the funds while employed at the company in managerial and loss prevention roles, prosecutors said, and spent it on real estate, sports cars and jewelry. Ryan K. Buchanan, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said that Kayricka Wortham of Atlanta and Demetrius Hines of Smyrna used their positions at the e-commerce and tech giant to submit more than $10 million in fictitious invoices for fake vendors, leading the company to pay approximately $9.4 million to Wortham, Hines and co-conspirators. As part of their sentencing, Wortham and Hines will forfeit cash and assets purchased with the stolen funds, prosecutors said. For Wortham, that includes more than $2.7 million, a Smyrna residence (purchased for more than $900,000), a 2019 Lamborghini Urus, a 2021 Dodge Durango, a 2022 Tesla Model X, a 2018 Porsche Panamera and a Kawasaki ZX636 motorcycle. Hines will forfeit more than $600,000, along with a 2022 Suzuki GSX1300 Motorcycle, a 2013 Ford Shelby Mustang, a 2021 Ford F-150 Black Widow, a Rolex Day-Date watch, a diamond bracelet and a diamond necklace. Wortham, 31, also known as Kayricka Dupree or Kayricka Young, was the leader of the scheme and worked as an operations manager at Amazon from August 2020 to March 2022 at the Smyrna warehouse, according to prosecutors. A Marietta man was sentenced to life in prison for aggravated sodomy, the Cobb County District Attorney's office announced Wednesday. Travis Leonard Hudson, 50, was sentenced by Cobb Superior Court Judge Mary Staley Clark Monday after he was found guilty by a jury on November 18, according to a news release from the DA's office. Prosecutors said Hudson's trial began Nov. 14, and that he was tried for sexually assaulting a female acquaintance on the night of March 12, 2021. The woman was reportedly visiting Hudson at his apartment and woke up to him assaulting her. Following an investigation by the Cobb County Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Unit, Hudson was arrested in June of last year. During the trial, Assistant District Attorney Sarah Hilleren presented the testimony of law enforcement, the victim, medical professionals and other evidence, the release said.   An Acworth woman and alleged gang member previously convicted for her involvement in the murder of a 17-year-old in Bartow County has been sentenced to more than a decade in federal prison, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday. Jennifer Foutz, 30, received 12 years in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, after she pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting murder in aid of racketeering, and aiding and abetting the use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia said. Gary Terrell Davis was sentenced this week for his role in the murder, the last of eight alleged members or associates of northwest Georgia's 135 Pirus gang accused in the murder. The lead defendant in the case, Maurice Antonio Kent, 32, of Cartersville, was found guilty of four felonies in May. On Aug. 24, Kent was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release. Others convicted in the case included Christopher Nwanjoku, 30, of Lawrenceville, Jamel Dupree Hughes, 27, of Atlanta, Cedric Sams, 29, of Cartersville, Michael Kent, 32, of Atlanta and DaSean Dorey, 29, of Decatur. Foutz, also known as “Rose,” had previously been arrested in connection to an unrelated shooting at an Acworth gas station in June 2017. Authorities said at the time she and Hughes encountered a member of another gang at the gas station. Hughes allegedly shot the member of the other gang multiple times before undercover police at the gas station working an unrelated case saw the shooting, and proceeded to pursue Foutz and Hughes, who attempted to flee in their car.   For the Marietta flag football team, it follows a simple premise. If the other team doesn't score, it can't win.  That was the case again Thursday night when the Blue Devils defeated North Gwinnett 13-0 in the quarterfinals of the Class 7A state playoffs. With the win, Marietta moves on to play Blessed Trinity in a rematch of last year's state semifinals, a game the Blue Devils won 26-0.  For the Blue Devils, it was their eighth shutout of the season and third straight to open the playoffs. The defense was so dominant it allowed only two first downs over the first 39 minutes of the 40 minute game, and only two plays of more than five yards during that stretch. With 3:53 left to play, North Gwinnett had one last chance to try to work its way downfield to try and tie the game, instead it went backwards. A run on first down lost three yards, a botched pitch on a reverse lost seven yards and two incomplete passes gave the ball back to Marietta at the Bulldogs' 5-yard line. It took only one play for Hennessey to find Gabi O'Neill with a short touchdown pass to put the game away.  Monday's semifinal matchup will be played at the Atlanta Falcons training facility in Flowery Branch. It is the first time the final four will be played there.   The Marietta Police Department and its retiree association honored women who have worked on the force in a ceremony at City Hall on Thursday. Jack Shields, a retired sergeant who worked for the MPD for 33 years and now organizes the department's retiree club, had the idea for the ceremony when he heard Susan Fuder would be in town for the regular MPD retiree lunch. Fuder, now in her 70s, became Marietta's first woman police officer in 1972. She was an officer for 10 years, during which she worked on patrol and in crime prevention. Shields said he figured it would be a good opportunity to recognize all women police officers. He and Marietta Chief Marty Ferrell presented Fuder with a plaque for her service. Fuder said when she applied to be an officer, the police chief at the time asked if she was sure she didn't want to be a secretary. She was sure — and had wanted to be a police officer since childhood. When Fuder became an officer she said her first uniform was a skirt, despite her request for pants. That changed after she had to retrieve a stolen bicycle tossed in some brambles. Frank Fuder, her husband who coached football at Osborne and Campbell high schools, said at the time he was concerned about her safety, but knew she would do a first rate job. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com                        See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

William Wolfe said Michael and Desiree Marin, both 44, got into an argument Sunday morning at a home located at 2605 Ivy Stone Trail. Michael is accused of shooting his wife at about 10 a.m. and then shooting himself as a result of the argument. "A school aged child was in the home at the time of the incident but was not physically harmed," Wolfe said. The couple was taken to a hospital, but Desiree Marin died from her wounds. Michael Marin, however, was listed as being in critical condition Sunday afternoon. #GwinnettDailyPost #Georgia #LocalNews        --          -         -          The Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast is local news for Lawrenceville, Norcross, Duluth, and all of Gwinnett County. Register Here for your essential digital news.             This podcast was produced and published for the Gwinnett Daily Post and GwinnettDailyPost.com by BG Ad Group    For advertising inquiries, please email j.southerland@bgadgroup.com For more information be sure to visit www.bgpodcastnetwork.com   https://www.lawrencevillega.org/  https://www.foxtheatre.org/  https://guideinc.org/  https://www.psponline.com/  https://www.kiamallofga.com/  https://www.milb.com/gwinnett  https://www.fernbankmuseum.org/     See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is traditionally full of holiday shopping, but with a U.S. Senate runoff election coming up, Gwinnett County voters have one more thing they can add to their lists of things to do this weekend: voting. The Gwinnett County Board of Registrations and Elections voted Monday night to move the first day of advance in-person voting, also known as early voting, up one day so it will now begin this Saturday. The move came on the heels of court rulings which allow Georgia counties to begin early voting on Saturday, rather than Sunday.

Officials at the Duluth-based day center, which works with people who suffer from dementia, had originally set Thanksgiving Day as their deadline to raise the money needed to stay open. If the money could not be raised by that date, then the center was going to have to close in late December, according to an announcement issued earlier this month.

Walton stunned the previously unbeaten and No. 1 Wolves 42-35 Friday night in the second round of the state playoffs, handing the hosts their earliest postseason exit since 1999. It snapped Buford's 22-game winning streak and was the first playoff loss for both fourth-year head coach Bryant Appling and his players, who had gone 16-0 since 2019. The Wolves were on a three-year run of state championships — the past two in AAAAAA and the 2019 title in AAAAA — and their last postseason loss was Nov. 23, 2018 to Bainbridge in the quarterfinals. Buford also had won 30 straight home games against Georgia teams dating back to that Bainbridge loss, and it hadn't dropped a game to a Georgia team since September 11, 2020 at North Cobb. Walton quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski, running back Makari Bodiford and visiting Raiders broke all of those runs of prosperity for the Wolves, which entered the game ranked high in every major national poll for high school football, including Number 2 by High School Football America and Number 6 by both MaxPreps and USA Today. Hecklinski completed 21 of 38 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns, Bodiford rushed 27 times for 83 yards and two TDs (in addition to a TD catch) and Walton racked up the most points allowed by a Buford defense since a 48-24 loss to Archer on Sept. 21, 2018. The Raiders (9-2) advance to play at Carrollton in next week's quarterfinals, while Buford finishes 11-1. Buford had held six of its past seven opponents to seven points or less, but Walton put up 29 in the second half — 21 in the fourth quarter alone.   Two Gwinnett County school board members raised questions about Gwinnett County Public Schools' data on discipline incidents in schools, with one of them publicly rescinding her support for the district's new discipline policy on Thursday night. Board members Mary Kay Murphy, who announced she no longer supports the discipline policy, and Steve Knudsen raised different concerns about data that has been presented to the school board about discipline. Knudsen railed against GCPS Superintendent Calvin Watts while referring to numbers the board received earlier in the day about violent incidents, and comparing that to data the board received last month about tribunals being down. The violent incident data presented on Thursday showed that, between August 1 and October 31, incidents involving handguns, fighting, pellet guns, razors or blades and other physical altercations between students were up from the same time period during the 2021-2022 school year. Watts responded to Knudsen's criticisms about the increase in major incidents versus the decrease in tribunals by asserting the district will not allow violent behavior, or other major infractions, to occur. Murphy said she is concerned that not all discipline incidents, particularly nonviolent offenses, are being reported in the district's discipline numbers. When she asked Director of Academic Support EricThigpen about that issue earlier in the day, he said the district is still looking at how it responds to absence without leave issues. AWOL situations are considered low level violations under GCPS' new discipline policy, which means teachers are designated with handling the discipline for those infractions. Thigpen said data has shown that absence without leave violations, like other more serious violations, are up this year. Cam Robinson rushed 21 times for 135 yards and two touchdowns to lead Mill Creek to a 43-7 victory over North Cobb in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs at Emery Sewell Stadium Friday. The Hawks , who scored 43 unanswered points and held the Warriors to 122 total yards, will host Westlake in the quarterfinals next Friday. Meanwhile, North Cobb watched its season come to a close in the second round of the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Leading 36-0 at halftime, Mill Creek scored on its first possession of the second half, driving 65 yards on 10 plays to go-ahead 43-0 on Clark's 1-yard scoring run with 9:14 left in the third period. The touchdown gave Mill Creek its 43-0 advantage. The Hawks outgained the Warriors 265-28 in total offense in the first half. North Cobb had three first downs compared to 12 for Mill Creek. The Warriors failed to complete a pass in the half. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs recently announced that it will award $27,980,800 in 9% Housing Tax Credits to construct or preserve 28 affordable rental housing developments, including two in Albany. Once completed, the properties will provide below-market rents to families, seniors, and persons requiring supportive housing. The two Albany developments include $1,149,909 for Pointe River, a family project, and West Pointe Senior, a $1,069,661 Housing for Older Persons project. The 28 awardees were among 61 applications. The awards are equitably distributed across Georgia. The awards include nine new construction rural developments, seven new construction Atlanta Metropolitan developments, eight new construction other metropolitan developments, and four developments preserving existing housing. The selected developments will target varied household tenancies — Family, Housing for Older Persons, and Elderly — and include supportive housing for persons with disabilities and housing integrated with supportive services for survivors of domestic sex trafficking. The nearly $28 million in Housing Tax Credit awards will generate approximately $360 million in private equity contributions. The equity, in turn, will fund the construction or rehabilitation of 1,688 units affordable to low- and moderate-income Georgians earning up to 80% of the Area Median Income. In addition to the tax credit-funded units, 89 market-rate units will be constructed or rehabilitated to produce mixed-income developments   For the fifth straight year, Grayson will be practicing on Thanksgiving Day after beating Camden County 28-10 in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA football playoffs in a matchup of the last two state championship coaches at Grayson. For Rams' head coach Adam Carter, the win was special, especially considering it was against his mentor and former Grayson head football coach Jeff Herron. The Rams were able to put the game away midway thanks to the efforts of their defense. A sack by freshman Tyler Atkinson, while he was sitting on the ground, moved the ball back to the Wildcats' 9. Then, another fumble by the Wildcats' was recovered by Tennessee-commit Jalen Smith on the 2, setting the Rams up with first-and-goal. From there, it was Taylor again rushing it in giving the Rams the final points of the game.   With the win, the Rams will now travel to Milton for their fifth straight quarterfinal appearance, and seventh in the last eight years.

Christina is a BCBA who works at Apollo's Lawrenceville, GA clinic. In this episode, Christina opens up quite a bit and describes how she encountered Applied Behavior Analysis, her early experiences as an RBT, the mentoring and supervision she's received as a BCBA in the early stages of her career, the value of learning about typical child development, the successes she's had as a clinician, learning the PEAK curriculum, and much more.  Christina quite vulnerably discussed juggling the immense challenges of being a working mother in our field as well. From sleep deprivation to feeling like one is never fully caught up... she candidly describes how she navigated that process.  Throughout the podcast, Jim related Christina's points to Apollo's unique clinical and supervision models. If you are interested in learning more about what they do, you can find more information here.  Here are some of the resources we discussed:  Prior Apollo Case Study podcasts. Making the Science Part of Your Practice, Session 167. Rapport Building and Instructional Fading Prior to Discrete Trial Instruction: Moving From Child-Led Play to Intensive Teaching (Shillingsburg, et al., 2019). Last year's Verbal Behavior Conference. For those who are interested, the 2023 VBC (disclosure: VBC is a podcast sponsor). In parting, I have two requests:  First, if you have any questions about this episode or any other ACSS podcasts, I encourage you to hit Jim up on LinkedIn.... even if it is just to say hello. Second, please share this show with friends and colleagues. I think Christina's story is highly representative of many people in the field right now, and this podcast may be helpful to quite a few BCBAs out there.

The city sought a candidate who fulfilled a combination of law enforcement experience, leadership, strong morale, and the energy to stay within our community for many years.Coming to Lawrenceville's leadership from Forsyth County, Mullin has been working directly with county management leading the Code Compliance, Animal Control Services, and Park Rangers Division. Additionally, Mullin served 15 years within the Sandy Springs Police Department, leaving that agency at the rank of Major. Within the Fulton County Police Department, he spent nine years as a uniform patrol officer. Mullin is committed to building partnerships in the community and developing a highly trained police force with little tolerance for illicit behavior. Mullin believes that those wearing a badge bear a responsibility to set a behavioral example and should strive to be servant leaders within the community. His anticipated start date is December 16, 2022.

I'm not doing any Black Friday discounts or sales, like all of the marketers encourage musicians to do. I know I've done them in the past. But I've never been comfortable doing that as you might've heard in a past podcast I did about the Ethics of Black Friday. What it boils down to is that I prefer celebrating the day after Thanksgiving as Buy Nothing Day. A day to fight back against consumerism. So for that reason, I'm closing down all physical sales on Friday, November 18. If you go to my store on Bandcamp. You will not be able to buy any CDs, shirts, album pins, songbooks or whatever else I have there. You can still buy digital downloads, but everything else will be gone. I will reopen the story on December 1. But only for a few days. I've been considering my environmental impact. Someone suggested that if you only ship products in a shorter time span, it's better for the environment, which makes sense to me. 2:46 - “Nancy Whiskey” from St Patrick's Day 4:47 - FAVORITE BEERS FROM THE LOST DRUID Come join me on Friday, Dec 2 at The Lost Druid Brewery. 10:30 - "There's a Bug in Cabin Six" from As Long as I'm Flyin' 12:43 - WHAT'S NEW? It's been eleven since I last posted an episode of the Cat Lovers Podcast. Seems like only yesterday. That's not true at all. It feels like 11 years. I thought about rebooting it. But I decided instead to do this special feature on Cats and Celtic music. That's because I released a new album this year. It's called Selcouth. Which means when everything is strange and different yet you find it marvelous anyway. It's also the reason I released a new song on the album which I'll talk about in a bit. But first, I want to thank a few of my Celtic Cat Fans on Patreon. I sent out a call and these amazing folks responded. Don Rice is from Moorhead, MN. He writes: “Definitely a cat lover, as we have owned many. Two currently- Chessie and Napoleon, both Grey striped tabbies. I'm a member of Poitin Band and a sci-fi lover as well.” You can find them on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Kelly Melville said: "My 11 year old daughter Lorraine Melville (from Hampton, GA) is the biggest cat and cat song fan in our family. We all are, but she's the one who has a bunch of your cat songs memorized and sings them to our cat. It would be a super fun surprise to hear her name in the podcast. She recently lost her first cat that she named White Tickle Ninja when she was 4 because as a kitten he would hide around corners and jump out to attack our toes with his tickly little paws. He loved people, and would run meowing up to everyone he saw, even complete strangers, in the hopes of food or pets. I think he thought he was a dog. He would wag his little stub of a tail when we played with him, pant, and even play fetch with balled socks. Ninja was the boss of the house, but our other cat Sherlock is the sneaky one who figured out how to open doors and one day set off our burglar alarm and brought the cops out to the house." Marie from Centennial, Colorado said, “My kitty is Annie. She will be 18 in July. I rescued her in August 2020, at age 16 and just under 7 pounds. She is the sweetest little thing and has a voracious appetite! They told me that they didn't think she was hungry but rather just liked to eat. (Really??!!) Well, I took her to a vet for a wellness check, naturally, and she had hypothyroidism pretty badly. We put her on medicine and she has been getting better. She runs to greet me when I get home from work and sleeps beside me every night. When I'm home doing paperwork or watching TV, she sits in my chair beside me and sprawls out with her front legs over my one leg. See you at DragonCon then Kentucky!” Finally, Carol Baril keeps the Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers group on Facebook going strong by sharing cat memes. She's out of Acworth, GA in the Atlanta area. She has a favorite cat video guy on YouTube she watches. “He is my go to guy for all things CATS!” She shared a video from Jackson Galaxy on playing with your cat! Check out these Kitties from Annie: If you want to join these amazing Gunn Runners, join the Club. 16:12 - “Lord of the Pounce” from Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers 20:31 - WHAT'S NEW WITH MY CATS? Since last I podcasted, my oldest daughter is 12 and my youngest is now 7. Sadly, all four of our cats we had when my wife and I first met have passed away. Rainey was the last one, just last year. Two years ago, we adopted two kittens that a friend found in their apartment parking lot in Birmingham. Pompeii is an ash-colored tabby boy who's grown quite enormous. He likes to meow at us at about 4 AM every morning when we don't lock him up. Though he's an indoor cat, he loves to run out the back door when he can to take in the sights and smells. Emmie is his sister. She looks a lot like him except she's smaller by a third and has brown fur. But their markings are very similar. Emmie loves playing fetch. And if you ever hear me podcasting and a cat starts begging for attention, it's usually Emmie. She loves to play, but she does not love it when I pick her up. She's fine when Kenzie picks her up, but not me. We have two new kittens in our house. A different friend from Birmingham had a cat that just gave birth. Gwen volunteered to help get them adopted. So he brought them over at the end of April. All but one are spoken for. Soooo we decided to keep him. Thorne Murder Cat Gunn is a black kitten with a little white dot on her chest. She's a bit more shy than some of the other cats. I'm gonna say that's because she's an introvert like the rest of our family. Emo is an all black boy. He was loving early on. Now he's a boy cat. 23:37 - Marc Gunn "A Lil Bit O'Love" from The Bridge (Celtic and Folk Music) 28:00 - STORY OF MINGULAY CAT SONG “Mingulay Cat Song” is by far my favorite cat song to sing. Certainly, I love the original song “Mingulay Boat Song” by Sir Hugh S. Roberton. You can hear the story behind that song in episode #243. Follow the link in the show notes. Unlike many of my cat parody songs, this one stands out in that I love to sing both versions and they are their own unique sound. I wrote “Mingulay Cat Song” when my oldest daughter, Kenzie, was probably 3 or 4 years old. I think she was in daycare. Every weekday morning, I would feed Kenzie before I took her to school. Then I'd race back home and work as much as I could before I head to pick her up again 4 hours later. One morning, I remember her sitting in her high chair eating cheerios or some other hand food off the table. She had a sippy cup that she usually drank, first thing. But the morning in question, she only had a tiny bit of the cup before I realized I was gonna miss her drop off time. I quickly gathered her up. Threw her in my arms. Grabbed some shoes. We raced out the door. I got back 30 minutes later. I took off my shoes, ran up the steps into the living room. I walked into the kitchen to clean up the food she had finished. Squish. My sock was soaked. And not just soaked. It was sticky soaked. The juice was all over the floor next to the cup. A moment later, Jenga rubbed against my leg and I knew. If you've ever had a cat, you've probably experienced something similar. Cats like to knock things over. Plain and simple. Jenga was our knocky-over cat. She was an overweight tuxedo cat. If ever we had an open drink sitting out for more than three minutes, she was not far away. She passed away several years ago when we moved to Atlanta. We don't have other cats that actively try to knock over drinks. And yet, we still prefer to use water bottles in our house. That was one of the bizarre consequences of her actions. No open liquid containers left unattended. I actually get a little neurotic when people take the cap off their water bottles and leave it off. It drives me crazy. The first two verses of “Mingulay Cat Song” were fairly easy to write. Just use actual experiences, like Kenzie's juice bottle moment. How many times did we run to the bathroom with a show running and come back to find whatever drink we were drinking now all over the coffee table and floor. The third verse, however, took a little bit more imagination. My wife likes cold icy water at bedtime. But fortunately, Jenga never knocked over icy water by the bed… But every time, I saw that icy water sitting there and Jenga jumped up on the bed, I just saw it happening in my mind. But I have seen her try to stick her head in the water so much that I really love adding the “tongue can't reach it” during the live shows to add a bit more comedy to this serious song. The final verse attempts to answer WHY cats knock water over. I think most cat fans like to say that their cats are just jerks… which, ye know, has it merits. But I love that add a scientific approach. They are conducting a physics experiment. And of course the last lines: “Tap the glass cats, watch it jiggle If it doesn't tip over, then knock it again” In mind, are just beautiful comedy. 33:07 - “Mingulay Cat Song” from Selcouth You can download this song as an MP3 when you join my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Sharing his battle with depression and succeeding, Zack Rutledge, MA shares his straight forward techniques that truly help. His book is "The Official Depression Relief Playbook: Real-Life Strategies From a Guy Who Has Lived It." Zack is in the movement counseling master's program at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He is a certified personal trainer, a fitness nutrition specialist, and a brain health trainer. He is a yoga instructor and has a black belt in karate. ➤RESOURCES Zack Rutledge: https://tinyurl.com/yrt8w33y Free Worksheet: https://www.YourTruthRevealed.com/listen ➤SUMMARY 1. You have a true insider's look on depression. What is your personal story? · The perfect storm at 18 years old, best friend killed. Not just grief, but depression. · Friends were leaving for college no support system. Dropped out of college. · Karate school shut down. (Mental illness manifests in early twenties.) · Moody punk rocker. Bass player for several bands. Played at CBGBs, opened for big bands, had a record label. But was miserable. Didn't know what was happening. · Real serious. Pit in my stomach, despair. · Felt like midnight all the time. Life went from color to black and white. · At about 8 pm a lot of thought about death. Feeding the fear wolf. · Only thinking about negative things, all messed up. Tough time concentrating. 2. What was your turning point and what depression relief strategy was most effective for you? · Took over a decade to heal and life to slowly come back to color. · Deepest depression at 5'9' weighted 125 pounds. Teaching fitness classes and working out was a biproduct of martial arts. · Lifting weights, muscles growing, and had more control. Felt better and not getting sick all the time. · Movement and physical activity are the main coping mechanism and relief strategy. 3. I believe that half of the treatment for mental illness is counseling and the other half medication. What is your opinion? · Medication and therapy are the West's gifts to the world. The East's gifts are yoga and martial arts. · There is no single definition of depression. There can be various causes of our depression. It can be genetic, chemical, or physical issues. · It can be brought on by grief, PTSD, or troubling relationships. · Mindset requires real work toward personal development. Always sharpening the sword. · Requires: discipline, patience with self, and an open mind and positive attitude. 4. What are practical steps someone can take to lift them out of depression? · Writing something down is the first step of taking an idea out of your head and into the real world. · What got me through the darkest times was shifting focus to what I could control. · I would create a list of all the things I'd like to change in my life. Then cross things off once it was done. Small victories. · Split the list into two categories: Life Goals and Daily Goals. 5. Lastly, how do you train people to have healthier brains and how does this impact depression? · Daniel Amen's book "Change Your Brain Change Your Life." Cognitive reserve and denser brain. · Cognitive decline. Exercise and physical activity help. Less brain shrinkage. · Coordination strengthens a lobe in the brain (cerebellum). Start juggling, play pickleball. · When you get your heart rate up and do something mentally challenging, you start to see angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels in your brain. Neurogenesis the process by which new neurons are formed in the brain.
