"We mustn't dwell, no...not today...not on Rex Manning Day." It's April 8 and 30 years after its original release we are still celebrating Rex Manning and Empire Records - a cornerstone film of 90s culture that feels as fresh, vibrant, and as entertaining as ever.
Empire Records poses the important question: What do a bunch of pre-20s slackers do at work all day? Well, they have random sex with has been celebrities, eat weed brownies, argue over mundane things, and thoroughly explore the existential crises they're all experiencing. To no one's surprise, very little work is actually done amidst all the melodrama. Now, that may not sound all that great, but Empire Records is very much a time capsule film. If you grew up in the 90s, you've no doubt seen it and probably have fond memories of it. Thus, its devout following, despite its lack of box office and critical success, is well earned. Empire Records is a shared experience film. We've all had jobs where we screw around all day, and we've all worked with people who fit the familiar archetypes in the movie. That is what makes it so relatable and has helped it to endure over the years. Now, sit back, compliment your special brownie with a Bloodline Blood Orange IPA from Flying Dog, and delight in the sweet stylings of Rex Manning! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are damning the man to save the Empire! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – They're selling music but not selling out! (0:00) Lingering Questions – In a movie full of clichés and tropes, which is the tropiest? (41:18) The "Rex Manning Day" Trivia Challenge – Bling Blake challenges the field to trivia about the movie. (1:07:03) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We continue our 90s Cult Flops series with Army of Darkness ... This is our boomstick! (1:19:19) And, as always, hit us up on Threads, X, Facebook, or Instagram to check out all the interesting factoids from this week's episode!
It's 1990 somethings! A truly blissful time when the internet didn't exist, everyone was still recovering from the 80s, tying a flannelette shirt around your waist was the pinnacle of fashion and you had to buy your music from an actual record store. But you didn't want to buy your music from some kind of bland corporate mega corp like Music Town. You want to go somewhere hip and radical like Empire Records! Where the staff can get away with stealing a large amount of money, have Rex Manning slam your cheeks in the copy room and you can perform your next big hit ‘Sugar High' on the rooftop. Like a Beatle! Sure it's not all good times. You might hallucinate Gwar sacrificing you on stage and your boss might hit you, but at least he didn't turn you into the cops. See, it's all swings and roundabouts! Empire Records, now accepting job applications by gun point and they're open ‘til midnight.Links to everything in our linktr.ee including our terrible merch, social media garbage and where to become a subscriber to Bad Brain Boys+If you're in Melbourne or the UK and want to see three beautiful idiots live and in the flesh, head on over to https://www.sanspantsradio.com/events/category/live-shows/ and grab your tickets today to see us in Melbourne, London, Edinburgh, Manchester and/or Birmingham. Just like the cast of this movie hates on Rex Manning for being a washed-up, has-been, we air some grievances against this nearly 30-year old movie. Watch the video version of this Couch Potato Theater episode on the Fandom Podcast Network YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@FandomPodcastNetwork Welcome to Couch Potato Theater here on the Fandom Podcast Network! On Couch Potato Theater we celebrate our favorite movies! On this episode your Couch Potato Theater hosts discuss Empire Records (1995) & celebrate Rex Manning Day (April 8th)! Empire Records is a 1995 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Allan Moyle, starring Anthony LaPaglia, Maxwell Caulfield, Debi Mazar, Rory Cochrane, Johnny Whitworth, Robin Tunney, Renée Zellweger, and Liv Tyler. The film follows a group of record store employees over the course of one exceptional day. The employees try to stop the store from being sold to a large chain, and learn about each other along the way. It went on to become a cult hit, and several of its stars launched successful careers. Celebrated annually on April 8, Rex Manning Day commemorates the day that washed-up 1980s pop idol Rex Manning (played by Maxwell Caulfield) visited the fictional Empire Records. An Internet meme among the film's fans celebrates "Rex Manning Day" on April 8, the date Rex appears at Empire Records in the film. #RexManningDay is a recurring trending hashtag on Twitter. GIFs commemorating the event show Embry's character bounding down the stairs from the store's loft, declaring "Not on Rex Manning Day!!" It's Rex Manning Day and we are talking the Empire Records Soundtrack with Harmony & BJ!
It's almost time to celebrate Rex Manning Day! So Iggy and Tyler are coming at you live with their thoughts on Empire Records, sharing their favorite Cult Classic films, and more!
Mark and Erik and discuss the 1995 cult classic Empire Records. Directed by Allan Moyle, and starring Liv Tyler, Ethan Embry and Renée Zellweger, the movie focuses on the shenanigans that occur at a bustling record store. In this episode, they also talk about Rex Manning, excellent store managers, and why this film has become such a beloved cult classic. Enjoy!
We're talking about whores, people! They're everywhere, and they should also be LEGAL. Stop the shootings, damn the man, save the empire! Renee Zellweger could have been a hoe for Rex Manning in that movie, but she gave it up for free. That's slut shit, and that's bad business! Come work at our brothel (to be named after legalization). Slaps on the ass, health care, dental, and Christmas parties at Pappasito's bitch! All you can eat dick and balls, leads to all you can eat fajitas. You better get that meat in yo mouth! Merry Christmas, wear those condoms, and say hi to your Mother for me.
Lucas lost all of Joe's money, and Empire Records is in danger of turning into a Music Town, but we mustn't fight....not today, not on Rex Manning day! This week we are putting on the soundtrack of the 90's and hanging with some up and coming stars in one of Brian's favorite movies, and we're mixing up several cocktails for the occasion! Join us as we throw a funeral for a friend, glue down some quarters, count blue cars, see Mark rock out with Gwar, and have a chat about Empire Records! After Brad relates a missed opportunity, Chuck presents his new segment: "Get Cultured, You Swine." We revisit older movies that many people have recommended to us. This starts with Empire Records, which sparks a lively discussion about whether Rex Manning is a bad guy. We talk about Escape from New York and Big Trouble in Little China before I tell Chuck my opinions on the (much-more recent) Moon Knight. I also tell Chuck about the 2017 version of Murder on the Orient Express and throw in some Agatha Christie trivia. We close with Chuck telling me about the Nicolas Cage movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.MP3 Download

What do Rex Manning, 90's overload, and a kid named Lucas have in common? Clayton hates all of them and they're all part of this weeks movie; Empire Records. This episode is probably gonna go down as the craziest episode yet, as Rick and Clayton disagree and agree on why Empire Records is the best and worst the 90's has to offer. So if you can get past the audio distortion, you're in for a lot of fun.
Damn the man! Join your favourite TransAtlantic podcasting crew – Ian, Liam, Ethan, and Georgia as we're heading into work early to do some calculus before Rex Manning shows up in the 1990s classic, Empire Records. We feel the need to explain AJ's art to you in our 117th episode as we discuss: What the first piece of principal photography for this film was Which other 90s classic did Regency turn down, choosing to make this instead Which cast members were actually family to each other We discuss the art of a mixed tape Ian asks if the Oscars are relevant anymore and we have a philosophical debate about what recognition means - the award or the airtime We once again discuss the difference between Best Film Ever and Favourite Film Ever Whether or not Empire Records is the Best Film Ever. Would Jason's life be different if he had seen Empire Records as a teenager? Would be have only want to work in record stores? Which character from the movie do you identify as? Would you be brave enough to ask out Deb on a date? Why did a movie that flopped in theaters get such a cult following afterward? Do you think Rex Manning is sexy? Jason's friend and co-host on various other podcasts Lisa Leaheey guest stars on this episode to answer these questions and tell us why Empire Records is a hella rad movie from the '90s.

Happy (Belated) Rex Manning Day! Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why Empire Records Should've Been Gay. We talk about how the swirling vortex of gay that surrounds Corey (Liv Tyler) as she decides between her undying love for her best friend Gina (Renee Zellweger) and freshly shaved power queer Deb (Robin Tunney). We talk the pain that we both feel when baby gay Corey throws herself at Rex Manning, a man who she thinks she must sleep with because of heteronormativity, followed by the pain that we feel when she gives in to being AJ's girlfriend because she convinces herself that her complete lack of feelings for him is "normal". Oh man can we all relate with Corey's stumble into gayness, her unrequited love for her best friend, her attraction to the out lesbian she works with and her lack of desire to sleep with Rex Manning. Here we come, baby je t’adore, to answer the deep Empire Records questions you’ve been pondering since 1995. Is Rex Manning evil, or just misunderstood? Is AJ nice, or “nice”? Who’s the best crier in the cast? And what IS with today today? Find out all that and more this episode!
""We mustn't dwell... no, not today. We CAN'T. Not on Rex Manning day." - MarkIf you haven't seen this cult classic, you are missing out!!!!! Empire Records is the after school job we all need in our life. Melissa and Andrea revisit this 1995 day in the life of motley crew of record store employees as they host a b-list music celebrity and face the impending doom of corporate takeover of their home away from home. When watching this movie, one takes in the epitome of 90's fashion genres, as well as, a soundtrack that inherently makes you feel cooler. Maybe we never got to work at a record store, but we can only hope to experience the camaraderie that retail service brings to our souls at least once in our lifetime. Damn the man, save the Empire!!!!!

Ket tells Kim about this movie (?) called Killer Klowns from Outer Space starring Suzanne Snyder, Grant Cramer and John Vernon. Ketryn has challenged Pennywise to a duel and she's tagging these assholes in. Join animatronic farmers and the dinosaurs from the 90's sitcom Dinosaurs with clown (klown?) makeup on and let's hop in Ketryn's Ford Windstar with (not) Rex Manning. "Today is the day I give myself to Rex Manning"
In 1995 Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger, Ethan Embry, and Rex Manning came together to make a comedy (comedy?) about a group of eccentric teens working at a record store. Naturally, this music-centric movie needed a killer soundtrack. Naturally, the Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra, and Toad The Wet Sprocket delivered. Our Patreonies voted (sorry, Clueless!) and the-little-movie-that-could, Empire Records, came out on top. Now why don't you all just fade away.
We are celebrating Rex Manning Day in style by Retro Reviewing the 1995 cult classic, Empire Records. Host Rob Champion and Special Guest, Go953MN's Chaz Kangas talk about the impact and legacy of this film. They also break down some behind the scenes stories, the awesome soundtrack, accuracy of record store life and what makes Rex Manning is such a compelling character. Nearly done with September Sequels! Tonight we tackle our first sequel musical and man, we gotta say, Grease 2 is NOT the word. From 1982, Grease 2 stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Rex Manning and some D list T-Birds and Pink Ladies. Grease 2 has all the high school musical shenanigans - bowling alley dance parties, bad sexual euphemisms, bunker seductions that go bust, a talent show that gets side tracked by a sad sack drama queen and don't forget the world's worst rip off of Danny Zuko we've ever seen. Sorry, we're being harsh. Grease 2 provides a ton of nostalgia and it's a great bad movie that we'll cherish till our dying day. We'll review all the good bad songs, let Sweetie do a timed 1 minute rant about Adrian Zmed, and talk about who are favorite season is from the Calendar Girls musical number. Cool rider baby. Cool rider.
Find us on Snapchat | Twitter | Facebook Visit classylittlepodcast.com for more! In honor of Record Store Day (and a belated Rex Manning Day), we're talking about vinyl in this episode! You know, those things your parents had in milk crates that now you see hipsters walking around with. Emily also talks to James and her husband about their new podcast, Unskippable! This episode's wine: The Art of the Vintage Rotation 2011 Merlot, Napa, California This episode's cheese: Havarti If you're wondering what Record Store Day is, don't worry, we explain it, and Emily talks about her experience standing in line waiting for the record store would open, which is a pretty fun experience. We talk about the joys of reading liner notes and lyrics in albums. If you're celebrating Record Store Day this year, let us know! We'd love to see your pictures! Send them to classypodcast@gmail.com or tweet at us at @classy_podcast. James talks about the history of recording sound, but Emily steers him onto other tangents, like the game Timeline and parrots. Also, you'll find out what Emily thought Clair de Lune was about, and how wrong she really was. James also tells us about Charles Cross, who had two great ideas ... and one really questionable one. If you'd like to see the picture of James wearing his backward clothes, we need 50 requests, apparently! Getting more into the crazy history of recording, James talks about George Washington Johnson, one of the first recording artists, and his incredibly racist, self-mocking hit song. But we love the story of his life and we raise our glasses to him in this episode. Emily's "natural" transition to her segment from George Washington Johnson to "Empire Records" is pretty great. However, it was considered a flop and Emily has some behind-the-scenes trivia about the movie that was a staple at high school slumber parties, and probably one of her favorite soundtracks. She also comes up with a great name for her next cat, Rex Manning. James tells us about the Voyager gold record, and get ready for four -- count 'em, FOUR! -- "Star Wars" puns from Emily. We also talk about the plot of an episode of "Martin" and alien smut. Even though James brings up a funny SNL skit from Steve Martin, he still won't admit that his King Tut song is funny -- listen to our Cheers to Comedy episode to hear more. Emily gives some tips about properly maintaining your record collection while James takes notes. And, find out where the word "pun" comes from! Plus, Emily confronts her husband, Mark, and James about their new podcast, "Unskippable." Find out James' rap name, the merits of hate-listening and why James sneaks into Emily's house late at night. You can find them at unskippablepod.com and on Twitter at @unskippablepod. Welcome back to DADM, fans. This week we watched Empire Records, for a belated Rex Manning day. We talked about sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll.
This 1982 musical disaster brought down an entire franchise, including two subsequent movies and a tv series.
