Sugar skulls are considered folk art and said to have come from Southern Mexico—they are part of the celebration for Día de los Muertos in English: Day of the Dead. This is not the celebration of Halloween—in Mexico. The “day” of the dead is actually two days of remembering loved ones who have passed away and welcoming their spirits home. I feel like they've got this holiday down way better than I've ever celebrated Memorial Day! Color, sugar skulls, spirits, paper flowers, candles, good food and marigolds. It seems like a celebration of inclusivity bringing the living and the dead together. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today's Dark enigma well, we sadly say goodbye to Halloween for this year, but it's a perfect opportunity for today's story! So, with that said, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. The choice of libation, as always my darlings, is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say Dead that will be a single shot and every time I say Halloween, that will be a double shot. Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so grab your candles, your favorite food and drink because today's topic is a wonderful celebration you may not know about, so let's learn The Real Story of the Day of the Dead or Día de los Muertos The Day of the Dead or el Día de los Muertos, is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. A blend of Mesoamerican ritual, European religion and Spanish culture, the holiday is celebrated each year from October 31-November 2. While October 31 is Halloween, November 2 is All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead. According to tradition, the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of children can rejoin their families for 24 hours. The spirits of adults can do the same on November 2.
