Long before the arrival of Europeans, some of the Indigenous Mesoamerican traditions of honoring the dead were celebrated with two specific feasts: Mikailwitl (feast of the dead), and Wey Mikailwitl (great feast of the dead). These feasts were celebrated in early August through mid-September. In fact, we are currently in the “month” of Mikailwitl right now, as it began on August 8th or the day Chikome Kozkakwawtli in the ancestral Mexika calendar. These celebrations were dedicated to honoring the dead through dance, song, and offerings of food and drink. Altars and burials were adorned with marigolds, a sacred flower thought to attract the spirits so that they might enjoy the offerings left in their memory.Today, these celebrations have been blended with Catholic traditions, and take place on All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Many think that Mikailwitl and Wey Mikailwitl were absorbed into the Allhallowtide (All Saints Day and All Souls Day) under the direction of the Catholic Church, as these Christian holidays also involve honoring the dead. Unfortunately, this popular claim is often repeated without any evidence to back it up. For example, a column about Dia de Muertos published on the website weareyourvoicemag states “in an attempt to convert the natives to Catholicism, the Spanish colonizers moved the celebration to November 1 and 2 (All Saints Day), which is when we celebrate it currently.”But is this how it really happened? Listen and find out as we explore the different ways that our ancestors negotiated and navigated the colonial process by masking their rituals and ceremonies behind a catholic facade! All Souls Day and the entire month of November provides an opportunity for Catholics to reflect on death, especially preparing for death. Contemporary culture sanitizes death by attempting to hide it. Why? Because the world fears death. But for Catholics who truly prepare for dying by remaining above all in a state of grace, death is nothing to fear.

Deuteronomy 18:9 – “When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations.” Please note that the 1st part is in English, and the 2nd part is in Malayalam starting at 11:03 mark.Leviticus 18:3, 4 – “You shall not do what is done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor are you to do what is done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes. You are to perform My judgments and keep my statutes, to live in accord with them; I am the Lord your God.” Halloween is one of the world's biggest holidays, especially in the United States. The Halloween ritual has a pagan origin. It dates back more than 2,000 years to Ireland. An ancient Celtic fire festival called Samhain was celebrated usually from 31st October to 1st November at the end of summer. It was focused on fire as winter approached and to bring light into the darkness. People knew that there would be lots of deaths of animals and humans during the harsh winter months. It was the time of the Celtic new year, a time of death and rebirth. Costumes and ugly masks were worn to scare away malevolent spirits believed to have been set free from the realm of the dead. Celtic pagans lit one giant bonfire in the village, danced around and acted out stories of death, regeneration and survival. Animals and crops were burned as sacrifices to Celtic deities. How the Catholic church influenced the Anglo-Saxons of Britain in the 6th and 13th centuries and how the All Saints Day and All Souls Day started in the Catholic church soon after Halloween are discussed. My name... Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 31, is the Eve of All Saints, also known as All Hallows' Eve or Hallowe' en, and commonly known as Halloween. In England, saints or holy people are called “hallowed,” meaning “All Hallows' Day.”Halloween or All Hallows' Eve is not a liturgical feast on the Catholic calendar. However, the celebration has deep Catholic meaning. The three consecutive days — Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day — illustrate the Communion of Saints. In other words, Halloween is the preparation and combination of the two upcoming feasts. We, the Church Militant (those on earth striving to get to heaven), pray for the Church Suffering (those souls in Purgatory), especially on All Souls Day and November. We rejoice and honor the Church Triumphant (the saints, canonized and uncanonized) in heaven. We also ask the Saints' intercession for us. The demonic, witchcraft, and macabre practices have no place in a Catholic celebration. Do you need to dress in any costume? Tied to the theme of the saints, as shown below. Let's imitate them and what they did to reach heaven by preparing our souls for death. [To learn more, please check these interesting links at our website]. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Does anyone else feel like the veil between life and death, this world and the next, thins around this time of year?Halloween, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, and Dia de los Muertos mark the beginning of the holiday season—a time for family, nostalgia, and deep connection. This week also happens to be my birthday. From my early childhood, my birthday celebrations often mingled with Halloween themes. But it was on my 18th birthday, while cleaning up a vandalized cemetery, that I found a profound connection to my life's passion: family history. For more than 30 years, my experiences have continually revealed the powerful links between life's celebrations and the remembrance of the deceased. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for cultural traditions that honor those who have passed. It's not just about looking back—it's about forging deep connections with our roots and our family, regardless of which side of the veil they are on._______________________________________________Please rate and review this podcast and then share it with your family and friends. For ideas on how to connect more deeply with your family through family stories, follow Crista on Instagram @CristaCowan.
I go out and expand as far as I can, Before it's time to come in. If I don't know my own limitations, I'll hurt or be hurt again. ☉ What an intense week! Happy Halloween, Day of the Dead, and All Souls Day on top of elections. Whew! It's really hitting the fan this week with three major oppositions that have to do with polarizing energy, and the amount of energy in the air is almost palpable, isn't it? The keyword for this Scorpio new Moon Friday is INTENSE. Let's keep in mind that the soul creates intensity (as in intense situations) to force up and out into the open, deep, powerful energies of transformation. So, while it is uncomfortable, it's also full of tremendous opportunity. If we go into the discomfort instead of running from it, there are riches to be found! You may find that you are stronger, brighter, and more resourceful (the list goes on) than you thought, and the only way to discover it is through some intense emergency-type situation. However, another truth is that there is no going back. Once you've discovered these aspects of yourself through intense interactions with others or life situations, you are permanently transformed into a different person. This is the resurrection that follows the death. It's a growth process nature uses in all her manifestations, from trees losing their leaves to snakes shedding their skins to us thinking it's all over only to find ourselves reborn. Hang in there! All You Need is Love! https://youtu.be/16IQt0bEqZI?si=L_XM2-q1-Z5UhLA7 So Much Love, Kaypacha

This blogcast explores “The Musical Tradition of All Souls' Day” written by Emily Lomnitzer and read by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess. In this blog post, Emily shares some of the history behind All Souls' Day's most famous musical compositions, for example, by Mozart, Verdi, or Andrew Lloyd Weber. Moving forward in history, we see some of the greatest composers creating masterworks called “requiems.” In these, the special prayers for Masses for the dead mentioned above as well as the prayers that are sung at ordinary Masses (like the “Kyrie”) are set to music. Usually they were written for choir as well as orchestra or organ, some requiring hundreds of musicians. Some of the most famous requiems are Mozart's, Verdi's, and Fauré's. You may hear selections of these at All Souls' Day Masses, or at special concerts dedicated to the feast, or during the season of Lent. Listening to recordings of them is also a wonderful supplement to your prayers during this time. One of the most famous pieces of music within the tradition of All Souls' Day is the “Pie Jesu.” Again originating from the prayers of the Mass for the Dead, the text reads, “Pious Lord Jesus, give them rest. Pious Lord Jesus, give them everlasting rest.” This prayer has become one of the most frequent inspirations for performances and composers, as the prayer itself is so simple and beautiful. There are so many beautiful versions, including one—among the most popular—composed by Andrew Lloyd Weber, the composer of The Phantom of the Opera. Whatever your taste in sacred music, there is much to be gleaned from the vast stores of music history with regard to All Souls' Day. For a thousand years, composers have taken to the page to help us better pray for our deceased loved ones. This year, why not find a requiem that you haven't heard before, or listen to Andrew Lloyd Weber's “Pie Jesu”? Ask God to help you to pray for the souls of your loved ones through this music as millions of people have done before you and will continue to do as long as music lives. ShownotesLast week we talked to Susan Brinkman from Women of Grace about necromancy, mediums and conjuring the dead and as our conversation confirmed God forbids these actions. Ironically, in today's episode we are going to talk about what the deceased want us to know about heaven and purgatory. But I promise you we are breaking no rules. As Susan pointed out last week there are disembodied souls waiting for us to pray them into heaven, but we should not try to contact them. In fact there are many Saints in the church who have had approved visions: Padre Pio, St. Tolentino, St. Gertrude, as well as mystic Maria Simma, whose writings about the souls in purgatory received the imprimatur. Souls who have come from purgatory have sought out the prayers of individuals to gain entrance into heaven. Yet the question remains: What can we learn from these souls? Our GuestsLeslea Wahl lives in beautiful Colorado and is the author of several award-winning teen novels. She strives to write stories that encourage teens to grow in their faith through fun adventurous mysteries. Leslea is often inspired by her family, their travels, and real-life adventures. Every year at Halloween in the United States, amidst the usual vampires, witches, wizards, and superheroes, you may see a few costumes inspired by the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. If you aren't familiar with this tradition, you might wonder about the significance of the floral crowns and beautifully painted skulls. Although the movie Coco recently brought Día de los Muertos into the public eye, Americans who are not of Mexican descent may still be confused about the celebration. Is this just how they do Halloween in Mexico? Or is Día de los Muertos the same as All Souls' Day? On this episode of Glad You Asked, scholar and educator Mathew Sandoval talks about the origin of this colorful and evocative tradition. Sandoval is a cultural historian and performance studies scholar whose research focuses on Día de los Muertos in history and popular culture. He is an associate teaching professor at Barrett the Honors College in Downtown Phoenix, where he teaches interdisciplinary seminars on art, culture, race, history, and activism. If you're passionate about education and supporting underserved communities, you'll love this episode of the Reading with Your Kids podcast. Jed Doherty sits down with Summer Schneider, the head of school at Legacy College Prep, a charter school in the South Bronx that's making a big difference in the lives of its students. Summer shares the inspiring mission of Legacy College Prep - to ensure all students have access to opportunities after high school, whether that's college or other paths like trade schools or the military. She explains the unique autonomy and flexibility that charter schools have, which allows them to tailor their curriculum and approach to best serve their students. One of the biggest challenges facing Legacy College Prep is the high number of students who are performing two or more grade levels behind when they enroll. But Summer and her team are laser-focused on building reading habits and providing extra support to help these students catch up and thrive. Beyond academics, Summer also discusses the importance of rebuilding the partnership between schools and families, especially after the pandemic disrupted in-person interactions. She shares how Legacy College Prep is working to bring parents back into the school community. Jed and Summer also touch on the nationwide teacher shortage and Legacy College Prep's efforts to ensure they're fully staffed and able to provide the best possible education. But the real heart of this episode lies in Legacy College Prep's commitment to college preparation and making higher education accessible and affordable for their students. Summer explains the school's partnerships with universities and their focus on guiding families through the financial aid process. The episode takes an exciting turn when Jed welcomes back Antony Kolenc and Leslea Wahl, from the Catholic Teen Authors group. They discuss their latest anthology, "Shadows, Visible and Invisible," which explores the Catholic traditions surrounding All Hallows' Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. Tony and Leslea share the collaborative process of creating these anthologies and the importance of preserving and sharing these rich cultural and faith-based stories with young readers. They encourage listeners to check out the Catholic Teen Books website to discover more inspiring, wholesome books for teens, and to support local independent bookstores by requesting the anthology. It's clear that the Catholic Teen Authors are on a mission to provide teens with literature that nourishes both the mind and the spirit. 3 days honoring the dead: Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day
On the night of November 1st, 2007 - during the Italian public holiday of Ognissanti - 21 year old British Student Meredith Kercher shared dinner with friends before saying goodbye and making the short 500-yard walk back to her accommodation, located at Via Della Pergola 7, in Perugia, Italy. Over the following hours, one of the following four possibilities took place:1. A suspect followed her home.2. A suspect was waiting in her home.3. A suspect broke into her home.4. A suspect was invited into her home.As night fell on All Saints Day, All Souls Day emerged from the same darkness that the suspect had escaped into. And with this, Italy awoke to the news of a horrific murder mystery occurring on their very doorstep. On a day that the country spent honouring and celebrating the dead, another life would tragically be added to that list. Was it the work of Meredith's housemates? Was it the work of a house guest? Or was it the work of a stranger? For more ICMAP content including over 170+ exclusive “minisodes”, head over to icmap.co.uk Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
