Today's episode is entitled A Mindful Getaway. My wife and I decided to get away for a day and enjoy a relaxing, mindful experience outside of our regular circle of existence. We decided to go to an island with almost no traffic, beautiful gardens, breathtaking views, and stunning beaches. Swimming was something we wanted to include. Access to good food and snacks was also required, so we could travel without taking much with us except for water and a bathing suit. It would be a place we had never visited before, a brand-new destination. Sometimes, you can plan a mindful experience if you purposefully set out to do it. I thought about this experience we hoped to have, and then a possible destination popped into my mind. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.MindfulnessMode.com We Did It Well, we actually did it. And the day included everything I've mentioned. Now, to backtrack a bit, I have had a lot of experiences where I drive somewhere and either get mixed up with directions, don't get there at the expected time, or something else just doesn't go right. I mean, think of anything that can go wrong, and I've probably experienced it. I've lost my keys, gotten locked out on a hotel balcony, arrived on the wrong date, gotten sick immediately after arriving somewhere, or forgotten where I parked my car. Usually things go smoothly when I travel, but not always. Listen to the episode to hear more about that balcony story. Where Did We Go? When we got to the Island and found out it was even more awesome than we expected. There were not a lot of visitors at all. The amusement park turned out to be more of a kiddy park and the rides were not open because this was a school day. We could still walk around the park and see animals and all the features of the park. It was okay to go anywhere within the park just to look around. A Fountain and More Then, we decided to check out more of the island. We saw a beautiful fountain and flower beds that were totally breathtaking. Then we rented a bike. Well, it wasn't exactly a bike; it was a four-wheeled pedal-powered vehicle with a canopy roof to shade us from the sun. The weather was awesome, and we had an hour to ride around and explore the island. Later, we rented regular bikes for another hour, and after that, we had a swim in the lake. A Fountain and More It felt like the whole day was a retreat of sorts, and my level of mindfulness was way up there in the stratosphere. Most of the time, we were on the island, it seemed like we were nowhere near a city at all. Then, once in a while, we'd catch a view of the skyscrapers over the trees. Kay Toombs is associate professor emerita of philosophy at Baylor University in Texas. In her work she explores the ways in which contemporary values and the context in which we live our lives impact our efforts to develop a sustainable culture and to form caring communities. In her work related to illness, disability and healthcare, she combines her training in philosophy with her experience of living with neurological disease to reflect on the experience of illness and disability, the care of the chronically and terminally ill, the relationship between health care professionals and patients, and the meaning of suffering and healing, both in the context of Western culture and within the context of intentional Christian community. Oh y'all . I am so excited about this one. Not only me, but my whole family. I have always loved to get in the dirt and play with bugs. In particularly, the "rolly polly". Yes, it's true. I don't search for them anymore, my heart still beats for them. Imagine my excitement when I was told that the ENTIRE INSECTARIUM'S ENTOMOLOGIST from Audubon Institute would sit down with me and talk not only ROLLY POLLYS, but beetles, butterflies and SO many more! Zack Lemann, one of the nation's most knowledgeable entomologists (experts in zoology dealing with insects) sat down with me and told me all about my dear rolly pollys as well as so many others! I am left so inspired, invigorated, and excited to share everything I learned with my 3 kids! With that said- THIS IS A MUST LISTEN FOR ALL FAMILIES!Then later, what happens when your carefully planned vacation starts to go south? We've all had layovers, setback and cancelations, but what happens when it's a CRUISE and you HAVE to get to your ship? What if you are abroad in some European country? This summer, my family went on a dream vacation by taking a cruise to Alaska. This is how I was able to turn this dream into reality, including how we managed unexpected expenses along the way.

In an interview for the Baylor Arts & Sciences publication “Collegium,” she said:“The whole focus of my work has been to show the difference between the patient's experience and the physician's perspective. I began this work when I spoke as a patient to physicians and was puzzled at their responses. We seemed, even though talking about the same thing, in effect to be talking about two different things.” Explore Books by Kay Toombs:www.homesteadheritage.com/books; www.amazon.com/booksThe Meaning of Illness: A Phenomenological Account of the Different Perspectives of Physician and PatientHow Then Should We Die: Two Opposing Responses to the Challenges of Suffering and DeathLiving at the Boundary, Healing and Incurable IllnessThe Human Dimension of Sustainable Culture Write to Kay Toombs KEY QUESTIONS:What is the difference between healing and curing? What is wholeness? What meaning can be found in illness and disability?
