How do you identify where non-wetting sands are holding back crop establishment and what can you do about it? In this episode of MSF Farm Talk Podcast, Younghusband grower James Stevens shares his experience investigating and addressing non-wetting sands on-farm. James talks about the challenges of uneven crop emergence across variable sand rises and how MSF-supported on-farm trials have helped him investigate different approaches to soil amelioration, including spading, ripping, deep ripping with inclusion plates and the use of chicken manure. He explains how poor crop emergence helped identify underperforming areas, and how soil pits and dye tracing provided a better understanding of preferential water flow through the soil. James also discusses the role of wetters as a lower-cost option at seeding, and what he has learnt about targeting amelioration rather than treating an entire paddock. James’ experience highlights the value of identifying the specific constraint before deciding on an amelioration approach and using targeted, practical trials to work out what fits your own farming system. This episode was recorded during MSF’s Soil Amelioration Workshop, where growers and researchers shared experiences and discussed practical approaches to improving constrained soils.

Parmi les communautés impactées par la présence du groupe terroriste Boko Haram dans la région de l'Extrême-Nord, au Cameroun, l'arrondissement de Kolofata, limitrophe du Nigeria, a longtemps été le théâtre d'attentats kamikazes faisant de nombreux blessés civils et militaires. Leur transfert vers les centres de santé ou les hôpitaux plus éloignés a parfois été fatal. Un hôpital de district, à Mora, assure désormais la prise en charge chirurgicale des blessés de guerre grâce à un partenariat entre le ministère de la Santé et Médecins sans frontières. De notre envoyé spécial à Mora, D'un pas alerte, le docteur Abali Malloum, directeur de l'hôpital de district de Mora, conduit vers un pavillon. « Nous allons visiter le service des urgences, c'est la première porte d'entrée de l'hôpital », explique le médecin. Devant, trois lits sont disposés dans la salle de soins. « C'est ici que les blessés de guerre ou par balles présentant des hémorragies sont admis, explique-t-il. Là, vous avez une équipe d'infirmiers qui est en train de s'occuper de deux personnes. » Dans la salle du bloc postopératoire, les onze lits sont occupés. « Chaque jour, on reçoit au moins deux à trois blessés avec des plaies balistiques. Ce sont des patients qui sont immédiatement pris en charge au bloc opératoire. Toute la zone est pauvre, les gens ne peuvent pas s'offrir le luxe de soins coûteux. S'il n'y avait pas MSF, ce serait compliqué », confie le Dr Abali Malloum. Personne à mobilité réduite, il a été attaqué nuitamment à Sandawadjiri, un village situé à 11 kilomètres de Kolofata, à la frontière avec le Nigeria : « Dans la même nuit, après avoir reçu les balles, un membre du comité de vigilance m'a aidé à être évacué vers le centre de santé de Kerawa, à la frontière avec le Nigeria. Et puis, dans la matinée, on m'a porté pour m'emmener ici, à Mora, pour la prise en charge. » Depuis cinq ans, la prise en charge est gratuite selon certains critères : « Nous avons opté pour la prise en charge chirurgicale des cas qui sont beaucoup plus urgents afin de réduire le taux de mortalité, parce que c'est là qu'il faut vraiment agir, souligne le Dr Aboubacar Sow, chef du projet MSF-Mora. En plus, il y a ici l'insécurité et la pauvreté, donc les besoins humanitaires sont réels. Aujourd'hui, on a pu mettre en place une unité de chirurgie capable de prendre en charge une bonne part des urgences sur place. » Plus de 500 interventions chirurgicales ont été effectuées depuis le début de l'année à l'hôpital de district de Mora, la plupart au profit des blessés de guerre civils et militaires. What does soil amelioration actually look like on-farm? In this episode of the MSF Farm Talk podcast, we hear from Paruna grower Jock McNeil about his experience using soil amelioration practices since 2015 to address non-wetting and other constraints across sandy soils. Jock shares what drove him to start looking at soil amelioration, after seeing crops struggle despite having moisture available in the subsoil. He talks through his experiences with deep ripping, spading, plowing and soil inversion, and how he has adapted his approach over time. Jock’s experience highlights the importance of diagnosing the constraint first, then matching the amelioration approach to the soil, paddock and farming system. Dmitry Pavlovsky came to motorcycling later than some, but he wasted little time making up for it. Born in Eastern Europe and raised in the Chicago area, Pavlovsky was 35 when a friend suggested taking a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course as a relationship-building exercise. By the time the class arrived, the relationship had ended—but a new one with motorcycles was just beginning. After learning on a Honda Rebel 250, Pavlovsky bought a 1977 Honda CB750 and started exploring the roads around Chicago. He eventually became an MSF rider coach himself, helping everyone from teenagers to returning riders develop the skills and confidence needed to ride safely. Motorcycles also gave Pavlovsky a new creative direction. After more than 20 years as a graphic designer, he launched the Vector Burn YouTube channel, focusing on lesser-known gear brands and practical equipment for riders on a budget. Today, he serves as the Chicagoland marketing representative for Law Tigers, connecting with riders, dealerships, independent shops, and events throughout northern Illinois. What brings farmers to a soil amelioration workshop and what do they take away from the day? In this episode of the MSF Farm Talk podcast, we head back to Loxton for MSF's Soil Amelioration Workshop, held in June, which brought together farmers, researchers and advisers to share experiences and explore practical approaches to addressing soil constraints across the Mallee. Throughout the day, MSF's Kylie Matthewson caught up with attendees to find out what brought them to the workshop, what they were hoping to learn, and what stood out to them by the end of the day. Farmers and advisers discuss some of the challenges they're facing, including compaction, sandy soils, water repellence, low water and nutrient holding capacity, and variable results from practices such as delving and deep ripping. A key theme throughout the conversations was the importance of understanding the constraint before treating it. Attendees reflect on the value of targeted approaches rather than a "shotgun" approach, staging investment, protecting ground cover and monitoring results over multiple seasons. The discussions also highlight the importance of ground-truthing trial results, using soil and plant testing, considering nutrition and operational impacts, and sharing experiences with other farmers and researchers.

A fine luglio un litro di olio motore a Gaza costava più di 1.300 dollari, venti volte il prezzo di sei mesi prima. Lo scrive Medici Senza Frontiere in un comunicato del 12 agosto: da quel litro dipendono i generatori degli ospedali, le ambulanze, le pompe dell'acqua, le autocisterne. Le autorità israeliane continuano a limitarne l'ingresso, insieme ai pezzi di ricambio. Il 5 agosto un generatore dell'ospedale da campo di MSF a Deir al Balah si è guastato. Con il generatore di riserva la sala operatoria è rimasta accesa solo per i casi critici, e gli ustionati sono rimasti nel caldo senza aria condizionata. Da giugno il polo di desalinizzazione di MSF gira sette ore al giorno invece di dodici, e l'acqua potabile è scesa da 600.000 a 350.000 litri, oltre 40.000 persone in meno servite ogni giorno. «Oggi si tratta di olio motore e pezzi di ricambio. Domani sarà qualcos'altro», dice Filipe Ribeiro, capo missione di MSF in Palestina. L'11 agosto l'ufficio ONU per gli affari umanitari contava a Gaza oltre 1,3 milioni di persone sotto i sei litri d'acqua al giorno a testa, contro uno standard di emergenza di quindici. Others support people in the long, slow task of dealing with the aftermath and impact on health, homes and livelihoods. Datshiane Navanayagam talks to women from Venezuela and the UK about their roles in disaster response.Claudia González grew up in La Guaira, Venezuela which has recently been hit by two earthquakes. She works for World Vision Venezuela and was at a United Nations meeting when the disaster struck. On returning to Caracas she learned many of her school friends and their families had died in collapsed buildings. Since then she's been working round the clock to support her team working with UN agencies to coordinate the emergency response.Lori Demontigny is a registered nurse with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) providing care in crisis zones. Lori was working in Myanmar when it was hit by its worst earthquake for over a hundred years in March 2025. It's thought over five thousand people were killed. Voilà à peine trois mois qu'elle a été officiellement déclarée et on a déjà dépassé 4 000 cas, bientôt 2 000 décès. Conséquence, précise-t-il : « Une baisse des acteurs sur place, des ONG internationales notamment, qui, faute de financement, ont dû interrompre leur présence sur le terrain. Cela a évidemment joué dans la capacité de détection et de réaction par rapport à l'épidémie d'Ebola. Le manque de communication entre le plus grand centre de contrôle des maladies au monde, le CDC, basé à Atlanta, et l'OMS n'a sûrement pas aidé dans la surveillance et l'identification de l'épidémie au début. L'administration Trump est allée jusqu'à interdire toute communication avec l'agence onusienne basée à Genève, dont elle a par ailleurs suspendu tous les financements. »

Send us Fan MailTrish Newport of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Switzerland is Inside Geneva's first summer profile this year.“My grandma was a humanitarian she had worked in Malawi and I remember when I was about 10 years old she said to me, ‘When you grow up and you become a humanitarian, you should work for MSF because they really have strong values and ethics that you will appreciate,'” says Newport. Originally from Canada, she has worked all over the world, in the most challenging environments.“I worked a lot in acute malnutrition response for a number of years, including in Niger. It's hard to see, but you can really do something, for example a little malnourished child comes in and, if they get Plumpy Nut and proper care for six weeks, they become a fat little cute kid and they go home,” she says. Now she's at the heart of MSF's Ebola response, in Bunia, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).“It's not just an Ebola outbreak. It's an Ebola outbreak in a context with massive humanitarian needs, that has high insecurity and where there's ongoing conflict. We see the outbreak is starting to go into areas with high insecurity, where we hear about community deaths but you don't have access to them, to be actually sampling to see if it's Ebola or not, or to have a proper Ebola response.”The World Health Organization (WHO) says this outbreak is spreading at record speed.“A mother had her child, the child was sick, and then the mother died of Ebola. The grandmother took the baby, came to where our project is, and the grandmother died. The baby is now sick with Ebola, none of the family wants to come to the child because everyone that touches the child dies. Après la grande inquiétude provoquée par un foyer d'hantavirus sur un navire de croisière, l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, l'OMS suit de très près une grave épidémie d'Ebola partie de la République démocratique du Congo, qui a tué une soixantaine de personnes. L'OMS a lancé une alerte sanitaire internationale mi-mai car il y a urgence : cet immense pays de 110 millions d'habitants est frontalier de 9 autres nations, au cœur de l'Afrique centrale, de quoi craindre une crise sanitaire régionale. Le risque épidémique n'a jamais été aussi élevé à l'échelle mondiale et le changement climatique, la multiplication des conflits armés, et l'érosion de confiance dans les institutions y sont pour beaucoup selon le rapport annuel sur l'état du financement humanitaire internationalEt cette nouvelle flambée d'Ebola, la 17ème en RDC, en est la parfaite illustration.A cela il faut ajouter selon des experts la désorganisation entraînée par les coupes sombres dans les budgets consacrés à l'aide humanitaire par les Etats-Unis mais aussi d'autres pays, notamment européens. Le favori des sondages, le candidat de la gauche Ivan Cepeda, est finalement arrivé derrière celui d'extrême droite Abelardo de la Espriella. Ivan Cepeda et Abelardo de la Espriella ont jusqu'au 21 juin 2026 pour convaincre les abstentionnistes et les électeurs des autres camps. Paloma Valencia, candidate de la droite traditionnelle, arrivée troisième avec un peu moins de 7% des voix, a déjà annoncé qu'elle le soutenait. Oubliés les coups échangés pendant la campagne, ce qui compte aujourd'hui, c'est de chasser la gauche du pouvoir – le « néo-communisme », comme elle dit. Explications de Marine de La Moissonnière, du service International de RFI.   En Haïti, l'hôpital de Cité Soleil rouvre ses portes Après plus de deux semaines de fermeture forcée en raison de la détérioration de la situation sécuritaire dans la Plaine du Cul-de-Sac, l'organisation Médecins sans Frontières s'apprête à rouvrir son hôpital de Cité Soleil, ce lundi 1er juin. Durant cette période, les affrontements entre groupes armés ont fortement perturbé l'accès aux soins pour des milliers d'habitants et mis sous pression plusieurs structures sanitaires de la région métropolitaine de Port-au-Prince. Cette fermeture a privé de soins de nombreux habitants et soulevé des inquiétudes quant à la prise en charge des patients dans une zone particulièrement affectée par l'insécurité. Quel a été l'impact de cette fermeture sur les activités de MSF ? Comment les patients ont-ils été pris en charge durant cette période ? Et quelles sont aujourd'hui les attentes de l'organisation vis-à-vis des autorités haïtiennes ? Entretien avec Thomas Curbillon, chef de mission de Médecins sans Frontières en Haïti. Bientôt 15 jours que l'OMS, l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, a classé l'épidémie d'Ebola dans l'est de la RDC en « urgence de santé publique de portée internationale ». Depuis, le virus poursuit sa course meurtrière, avec plus de 200 morts. Avant-hier, rapporte Le Forum des As à Kinshasa, « le ministre de la Communication, Patrick Muyaya, et le ministre de la Santé publique, Samuel Roger Kamba, ont annoncé qu'environ 1 000 personnes présentant des symptômes compatibles avec Ebola étaient actuellement suivies, dont 101 cas confirmés, tandis que 3 600 cas contacts faisaient l'objet d'une surveillance rapprochée. (…) Les autorités congolaises reconnaissent que la bataille sera longue, pointe encore Le Forum des As. La riposte pourrait s'étendre sur trois à six mois, selon l'évolution de la courbe de contamination. (…) Pour Kinshasa, contenir rapidement la propagation du virus tout en rassurant les populations reste désormais le défi majeur des semaines à venir. » Défiance et colère… Et parmi les priorités, note encore le quotidien kinois : les enterrements sécurisés… En effet, relève Le Monde Afrique, « les enterrements sont à haut risque pour la propagation du virus Ebola. Le contact avec le corps des défunts est un des principaux modes de transmission de la maladie infectieuse. Depuis l'officialisation de l'épidémie, les autorités s'attellent donc à sécuriser ce rite. Mais les distanciations imposées aux proches des morts suscitent de la défiance. » Témoin, cette vidéo, transmise au Monde Afrique par une source humanitaire. Les faits se passent à Kyondo, dans la province du Nord-Kivu. On y voit « une foule en colère s'en prendre à des soignants vêtus de blouses bleues, de masques et de gants chirurgicaux, pour les empêcher de charger un cercueil dans leur véhicule. (…) Lors des dernières secondes de cette vidéo d'une minute, le couvercle du cercueil est arraché par un des membres de la foule. À l'intérieur de la bière, on distingue un sac mortuaire blanc dans lequel se trouve une des quelque 220 personnes probablement emportées par la nouvelle flambée épidémique. » « À Mongwalu, principal foyer de propagation situé dans l'Ituri, rapporte encore Le Monde Afrique, la tension fut telle, dimanche dernier, que les forces de l'ordre ont dû tirer en l'air pour disperser la foule. "Des jeunes fidèles catholiques ont assiégé l'hôpital pour tenter de récupérer le corps d'un pasteur populaire et d'organiser eux-mêmes son enterrement, ce qui n'est pas possible compte tenu de l'épidémie", relate un élu local. » Des patients en fuite… Toujours à Mongwalu, rapporte Afrik.com, « des tentes d'isolement construites avec l'appui de MSF, Médecins sans frontières, ont été incendiées le week-end dernier par un groupe non identifié. 18 patients suspectés ou atteints d'Ebola, selon le Dr Richard Lokudi, médecin directeur de l'hôpital, ont pris la fuite. Sept autres patients ont profité de la confusion pour s'échapper. Radio Okapi évoque pour sa part 13 malades toujours introuvables sur les 28 personnes que les tentes hébergeaient. (…) Cette fuite de patients constitue l'un des pires scénarios pour la riposte, soupire Afrik.com. Ebola se transmet par contact direct avec les fluides corporels d'une personne malade ou décédée. Si des patients symptomatiques rejoignent leurs familles, consultent dans des structures informelles ou se déplacent entre villages, la chaîne de transmission devient beaucoup plus difficile à reconstituer. » Stopper la propagation ! La crainte est maintenant que le virus franchisse des frontières… « L'Afrique mobilise près de 500 millions de dollars pour éviter une contagion régionale », pointe Le Journal de Kinshasa. C'est ce qu'annoncent l'Union africaine et les Centres pour le contrôle et la prévention des maladies, présents sur le continent. « Objectif : stopper la propagation et éviter que cette flambée d'Ebola ne devienne la deuxième plus grave depuis 2014. » Déjà en Ouganda, pays voisin, rapporte Jeune Afrique, « deux nouveaux cas confirmés ont été enregistrés. Cela porte à sept le nombre de malades d'Ebola – dont l'un est décédé – recensés dans le pays depuis le début de l'épidémie ». L'Ouganda qui a décidé de fermer temporairement ses frontières hier.

The World Health Organisation has sent a team of experts and supplies to the Democratic Republic of Congo to help combat the spread of Ebola. On Sunday, it declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern because of the high risk the disease could spread further beyond DR Congo's borders after two cases were confirmed in Kampala, the capital of neighbouring Uganda. Among the agencies assisting in the efforts is Medicins San Frontiers, also known as Doctors Without Borders. Simon Eccleshall is the Head of Programs for MSF in Australia, and he spoke with SBS World News reporter Alexandra Jones about the group's response.

L'épidémie d'Ebola préoccupe la presse congolaise. Particulièrement les évènements survenus hier en Ituri, et que rapporte Le Potentiel qui fait état « de violences survenues dans un site de prise en charge de l'ONG Alima ». « Selon des sources sanitaires locales, explique le journal, les installations déployées par l'organisation humanitaire ont été incendiées par des individus en colère, forçant les autorités à placer le personnel médical sous protection militaire ». Que s'est-il passé exactement ? « D'après les premiers éléments recueillis, les membres de la famille d'un patient considéré comme suspect ont tenté de récupérer le corps contre l'avis du personnel soignant. Malgré les protocoles stricts imposés pour limiter la propagation du virus, poursuit Le Potentiel, la tension est rapidement montée sur le site, provoquant une situation de chaos. Au cours des affrontements, six patients ont réussi à prendre la fuite, parmi lesquels trois cas confirmés et trois cas suspects. » Une situation qui renforce l'inquiétude générale. « Les autorités sanitaires rappellent que la manipulation des dépouilles demeure l'un des principaux vecteurs de contamination lors des flambées d'Ebola, nous dit Le Potentiel. Dans plusieurs communautés touchées, ajoute le journal congolais, les résistances aux procédures d'enterrement sécurisé continuent de compliquer les efforts de riposte, alimentées par la méfiance envers les structures médicales et les rumeurs autour de la maladie. » À lire aussiEbola en RDC: un incident éclate au centre de soins de Rwampara, deux tentes mises à feu Insécurité La question de la sécurité, durant l'épidémie, préoccupe également Radio Okapi. « Les mesures de protection contre le virus Ebola peinent à être appliquées sur le terrain, explique la radio de l'ONU en RDC. Dans plusieurs véhicules de transport en commun, comme les bus ou sur les motos, l'entassement des passagers reste fréquent. Sur place, il s'observe un faible nombre de passagers portant des cache-nez et l'absence de dispositif de lavage des mains. » Par ailleurs, les chauffeurs parlent « de mesures prises sans tenir compte de la réalité de leur travail ». L'un d'eux explique ainsi qu'on « leur demande de transporter seulement quatre personnes », « sans aucune mesure d'accompagnement pour alléger les taxes » face au manque à gagner. Autre préoccupation, dont le Journal de Kinshasa se fait l'écho : « Les capacités d'accueil sont saturées en Ituri. À Mongbwalu, le manque de lit et de matériel freine la riposte contre Ebola. » « Les centres de prise en charge débordent et plusieurs malades restent confinés à domicile, augmentant le risque de contamination dans leur entourage », poursuit le Journal de Kinshasa. « Le centre de traitement Ebola promis pour renforcer la riposte n'a toujours pas ouvert ses portes. Le journal ougandais précise que « le gouvernement a suspendu les vols directs entre l'Ouganda et la RDC. Par ailleurs, le transport frontalier de passagers et les services de ferry public sur le fleuve Semuliki sont interrompus pour une durée de quatre semaines. Le ministère de la Santé a toutefois précisé que le transport de marchandises et de biens essentiels pourra se poursuivre sans interruption », ajoute Le Monitor. Des mesures ont également été prises sur le plan intérieur. « Des restrictions strictes sont appliquées dans les zones frontalières à haut risque.
