Governor Brian Kemp got the 'tort reform' he wanted this legislative session, and there were three House Democrats among the 91 votes he can thank for it. One of those votes came from Rep. Dr. Michelle Au (GA 50) , who penned a two-page letter-explanation to share on her social media. She's catching a lot of heat from her base for it. So are the handful of Republicans - including one who lost his jobs hours after voting against SB 68. Wow. Mob-like, no?------Meanwhile, Senator Jon Ossoff launched his re-election campaign in Atlanta over the weekend with a lot of fiery rhetoric - both supporters and critics noting how much attention he gave to Trump - to kickstart the 2026 cycle. With no current primary opposition (Esther Panitch being a 'hard no' now), all eyes are on who Ossoff will face. Right now, he's aiming at MAGA. It's a tactic.------Last week, Jay Bookman penned a piece equating the deconstruction of federal agencies to a 'giant game of Jenga.' He and I caught up to take that conversation a little further. Always an insightful conversation with the longtime writer/journalist.
Guest: Zac Bookman, CEO and Co-Founder of OpenGovThirteen years after co-founding the government transparency startup OpenGov, Zac Bookman is still finding ways to surprise people. In 2023, Cox Enterprises bought the company for $1.8 billion — but as far as Zac is concerned, “we're just getting started.”“ I left the vast majority of my net worth in the company,” he says. “So I'm a believer. I'm all in.”The mission of powering “more effective and accountable government” has been stable since OpenGov's earliest days, and that mission has informed everything from hiring to M&A to the decision to sell. “These people buy and don't sell,” Zac said of Cox. “They're all in on the mission. And they're all in on taking care of employees. So I see a triple win: A win for employees, win for the investors, win for the customers, maybe a quadruple win for me and the management.”Chapters:(01:46) - OpenGov's mission (04:34) - Shrinking the product-market fit (07:34) - Super misson driven (08:59) - Why OpenGov almost shut down (13:08) - Zac's early career (16:16) - Picking (and losing) a CTO (22:50) - Growing upside-down (25:29) - The SPAC backstabber (31:26) - Why Zac didn't get fired (33:24) - Selling in 2024 (37:04) - Growth by acquisition (42:31) - John Chambers and PMF (49:32) - Zac's cross-country bike ride (56:25) - Expectations vs. reality (58:57) - The coup attempt (01:01:59) - Tiring work (01:05:47) - Going to the White House (01:09:40) - DOGE & disrespect (01:12:54) - “We're just getting started” (01:14:18) - Who OpenGov is hiring (and where) (01:15:13) - What “grit” means to Zac Mentioned in this episode: Joe Lonsdale, Cox Enterprises, OpenAI, the Department of Government Efficiency, Workday, H.R. Jay Bookman is a gem of a journalist and opinion writer, and Georgia Recorder is lucky to have him - as am I, on occasion and today is such an occasion. He joined me to discuss his latest - "Stacey Abrams' political aspirations bookended by bad timing" - to discuss the 2026 Georgia gubernatorial field as it may (or may not) shape up to look like, along with a few other topics - like Donald Trump's aversion for calling on the Department of Justice to investigate that 2020 election his insists was stolen. Plus, I don't often find much I agree with Vivek Ramaswamy on, but what got him ousted from DOGE and Trump's good graces is something he's (mostly) not wrong about. He ran afoul of "American exceptionalism," though, and MAGA's don't want to be confused by vowing to "make America great again" while also being told America's culture is inferior to those from throughout the rest of the world.

Years of Service: 1982-2022With over 40 years of law enforcement experience, Frank has risen through the ranks of the Garda Síochána which is the national police force for Ireland. For context, there are no independent police departments, sheriff's offices, or national agencies such as the DEA, FBI, and HSI in Ireland. This means the Garda handles all crimes throughout Ireland. As you will hear during this interview, Ireland's police force is much more community-oriented but as Frank explains they still have the same crimes in Ireland as does the United States. Frank ended his career as a Regional Detective Superintendent after rising through the ranks of Recruit Garda, Garda, Uniform Sergeant, Detective Garda, Bookman or Incident Coordinator, and Detective Superintendent.

By Adam Turteltaub In late 2023, The Office of Inspector General (OIG) at the Department of Health and Human Services issued its new General Compliance Program Guidance. In this podcast, David Schumacher, Partner and Co-Chair of the Fraud & Abuse Practice at Hooper Lundy & Bookman explains that this document is both evolutionary and revolutionary. For years the OIG's office had been offering guidance through the Federal Register. To make that information more accessible it moved it online, consolidated the information, added interactive features and created a much richer resource which makes it both easier for compliance teams to understand the OIG's expectations and more difficult for some to claim that they were unaware of the rules. The changes, though, are more than just the media used to communicate OIG expectations. The document demonstrates both the ongoing expectations by OIG for robust compliance programs and communicates changes in focus. For one, it reveals an enhanced emphasis on quality issues in healthcare and patient safety. It also reflects the OIG's efforts to ensure effective compliance program in new entrants into healthcare, such as private equity and technology firms. Both may well discover that practices that are permissible elsewhere are not in healthcare. The guidance also encourages incentivizing compliance. Another gem in the guidance is the clear message to carefully scrutinize arrangements with third parties. Due diligence at the outset is important, but it is also necessary on an ongoing basis to determine if the relationship is necessary and the price tag is fair market value. Listen in to learn more, and be sure to check out the General Compliance Program Guidance.
