Jeff Head joins the boys to talk Sword-fishing, Thresher Sharks, Yellowfin-Tuna and much much more!
Thresher sharks are known for their unusual hunting strategy. They use their long tail like a whip, striking it so fast that it creates a shockwave capable of stunning multiple fish at once! But how does their anatomy support such an extreme movement? In today's episode we find out! We talk with Jamie Knaub, who researches the biomechanics and vertebral anatomy in large, swimming animals - including whales and sharks. In this episode we explore Jamie's research, including her most recent work studying the vertebrae of the thresher shark to understand how they are able to carry out that iconic tail whip. This episode has it all: the Olympians of the shark world, surprise humpbacks, sharks with anxiety, digital dissections and of course some deliciously nerdy science. During our recent expedition to Malapascua Island, Philippines, I sat down with Toni Plaza and my buddy, Underwater Photographer, Chris Doherty to discuss thresher sharks, eco-tourism and the people of Malapascua Island. Hope you enjoy this podcast. The intro was recorded while I was on my flight to Borneo for our orangutan expedition, so sorry about the noise.

I am covering 3 Ocean News stories for today's episode: 1) There were 300 dead thresher sharks found on the side of the road in Mexico and investigators are saying it has to do with organized crime; 2) A fisher in Costa Rica was surprised to see plastic pieces, including a lighter, after he cut open his catch...a mahi-mahi fish; and, 3) A Right Whale was spotted off the coast of Naples, Florida which counts as only the 5th sighting of these marine mammals since 1963.
