How do cats find their way home?

“How on earth do cats find their way back to their previous home when they move house?" asks Vicky Cole from Nairobi in Kenya. Our enduring love for our feline friends began when Egyptian pharaohs began to welcome domesticated moggies into their homes. Pictured reclining in baskets at the feet of royalty, pet cats soon became fashionable throughout society in Egypt. Today they are the most popular pet in the world, and home is definitely where their hearts lie. "Whereas dogs are bonded to people, cats are bonded to place," explains zoologist Dr John Bradshaw. "It's very typical for them to try and find their way back to their old house when you move." But how do they do it? And if their navigational skills are so good, why do they get lost? Prof Matthew Cobb reveals the super-senses that cats possess, and how to spot when your pet is deploying them. Itchy and Scratchy "What is an itch and how does scratching stop it? Why does scratching some itches feel so good?!" asks Xander Tarver from West Sussex in England. Our doctors set off to probe the mysteries of itch, and discover that this overlooked area of medicine is revealing surprising results about the human brain. From why itching is contagious to why scratching is pleasurable, we get under the skin of this medical mystery. The programme features interviews with neuroscientist Prof Francis McGlone from Liverpool John Moores University and dermatologist Dr Brian Kim from the Center for the Study of Itch at Washington University. Yes, that is a real place. If you have any Curious Cases for the team to solve please email curiouscases@bbc.co.uk. Robert Wilson leads off this week by bursting two tyres in Wales – and he thanks the helpful residents of Nantmor. Derek has been investigating fermented foods from his compost heap. Just in case you think that The Archers is all made up the musical “Hair” is being revived this year with a new immersive production. I assume immersive means the audience are underwater – see this: https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/news/new-immersive-production-of-hair-to-run-at-the-vaults-in-london Will Lucy be going? Discussion of Caroline’s death dominates this week’s podcast for obvious reasons. I would like my say. Throughout her village existence Caroline followed her heart; she might not be religious, but could love the vicar; most eligible (and at least one ineligible male in Brian) fell for her charms and she fell for theirs. Her character was never distorted or altered and she provided a person slightly at a distance from main village activities. Wonderfully created and much under used in recent years. Yokel Bear however kills off Christine rather than Caroline, but I am sure he knew whom he really meant. Lucy reports Tweet of the Week: “Answer three simple questions about fermented food and win a bucket to be sick in.” Naked Fingers (nothing to do with the Filthy Fingers café) then debunks the whole fermented food fad which has no scientific basis – Lucy has also demolished the entire healthy eating lobby as it merely hides other eating disorders. Naked Fingers then heads off to eat ricotta lasagne – pictures are available on Twitter. Kosmo This week’s Dumteedum is from Jan from Can and Vicky Cole! Thank you ladies! On this week’s episode we have views from: Glyn Fullelove who wonders why the farmers of Ambridge are so un-entrepreneurial Witherspoon says Tom makes him sick Jo Jo Sexy Heels says she’ll miss Caroline and Goddess Deeva who’s shipping like mad See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

If you’d like to sing us a Dumteedum, leave us a plot prediction or think that one six year old ISA and nine grand is going to be enough for a deposit on a picturesque country cottage in a sought after rural area then call us on 0203 031 3105 or leave us a message on Speakpipe. Thanks to Kosmo for his podcast round-ups and doing the dumteedogs and to Derek for the loan of the back bedroom. Derek went to Pride by mistake as he thought it was a march against haemophilia. Anyway he had a lovely time, has a new friend called Terry and asks if anyone knows if rainbow glitter reacts with Anusol. If anyone has any advice, please let us know and we’ll pass it on. On this week’s episode we have views from Glyn Fullelove who thinks Will Grundy’s an arse Witherspoon who’s struggling to keep up with Phoebe, New York Nigel who’s lost the will to live Lou Lum who loves the fete worse than death Lord Louise who foresees a Pyrrhic victory for Will Jo Jo Sexy Heels who thinks Bridge Farm may be fermenting PR problems Rachel Thomas who thinks Jennidarling’s colluding and Vicky Cole who says Scruff gin isn’t worth the water it’s made of. The headline gives it all this week - we all want to know how and why Ian is going to work his way out of his current impasse with his life partner and his best friend in the village. Lucy believes that Ian would normally talk through his problem with Adam using his normally calm approach to resolving difficulties. Ian obviously cannot think about matters clearly or see a way forward and bringing a reconciliation of all three parties over (hopefully) the near future will prove instructive for listeners. Andrew White from Portland, Maine was making his first call and he has a Jean Harvey fan club which Lucy is glad to know exists. He did not disclose his occupation. Vicky from Cambridge was also a first time caller and she likes Charlie Thomas and she thinks he will stay as well as asking why all the new men are wrong 'uns (Rob, Alex, Toby and/or Rex et al). She buys toilet rolls. I was not the only one who spotted the frisson between Hayley and Roy - thank you Vicky Cole. Lucy does not believe she...
