Tristen Norman is the Head of Creative Insights, Americas at iStock and Getty Images. She operates as one-part visual anthropologist and two-parts data scientist working across disciplines to understand what motivates visual selection, identify trends within visual language, and use this data to help shape the development of Gettys creative content globally. Leveraging consumer research and social and cultural listening and pairing it with proprietary data, Tristen hones in on the valuable insights that feed the development of Getty Images' own creative collections. A passionate advocate for elevating marginalized voices within creative spaces, Tristen also plays a critical role in supporting and advancing initiatives and partnerships to champion diverse visual narratives at Getty Images and beyond. Tristen's experience stems from over nine years in creative design, market research, and brand strategy. Before joining Getty Images, Tristen was most recently a Senior Experience Strategist at Wunderman, where she was responsible for developing creative, data-driven omnichannel creative brand strategies for clients across various industries. Tristen earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Temple. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Tristen Norman about how the era of ‘no normal' has impacted content creators and what destination marketers can do to ensure they're telling multilayered stories. We also discuss the importance of interrogating our content choices to improve our marketing and stress that it is the little choices that make the most significant impact. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Why wellness is an ongoing content trend and how we can make it a universal experience How to create multilayered stories to share with prospective visitors The importance of remaining authentic as a brand What kind of imagery consumers are looking to engage with How to take a deep dive into your content and identify the gaps How Getty Images' VisualGPS tool can help you diversify your content library Why Authenticity is Key In today's travel marketing landscape, authenticity has become paramount, and it's essential for brands to share authentic images and narratives. Tristen explores the challenge of maintaining authenticity while telling layered stories and emphasizes the importance of investing time, resources, and energy in the process of authenticity. Through image testing and surveys, Tristen's team discovered that consumers respond most to images that represent slices of real life. These visuals should reflect diversity, different cultures, communities, and lived experiences. Take a Step by Step Approach to Curating Your Content DMOs and brands need to analyze their existing content and identify how they can best fill any gaps, such as concentrating on little-known attractions of their destination. Incremental changes can lead to a profound shift in the audience's relationship with a destination. Rather than attempting to solve all the world's problems at once, brands should take a step-by-step approach, assessing what's available, what can be swapped in, and what resources might be needed. Starting with small, manageable changes is the key to building an authentic brand narrative that resonates with audiences. Tools for Content Creators When it comes to tools and resources for content creators and marketers in the travel industry, Tristen mentions several options available through Getty Images. She also shares how to stay updated with industry insights, trends, and conversations via their VisualGPS Insights tool, which provides data and insights on global visual content trends, helping marketers make informed choices. Has the advertising industry been so busy trying to save the world, that it has lost sight of its commercial purpose?I'm kicking the year off with what many believe is one of the major problems plaguing the advertising industry, a creative effectiveness crisis. And I had the great pleasure of discussing the issue with one of my favourite advertising thought leaders, Mr Steve Harrison.Steve Harrison is a copywriter, creative director and author regarded by Campaign Magazine as the greatest Direct Marketing Creatives of his generation. He was European Creative Director at OgilvyOne and Global Creative Director at Wunderman. He started his own agency, HTW, where he won more Cannes Lions in his discipline than any creative director in the world. He is the author of highly respected books like ‘Changing the world is the only fit work for a grown man'; ‘How to write better copy'; and ‘How to do better creative work'. And his latest book ‘Can't Sell, Won't Sell: Advertising, Politics and Culture Wars' has been described by the IPA as the most provocative advertising book we've seen in years.Steve and I tackle many of the topics covered in ‘Can't Sell Won't Sell', debate what's gone wrong with advertising,  the cultural and political impacts on it, and what we need to do to fix it. And he shares his refreshingly inspiring and straightforward processes, that simplify everything from defining the marketing problem, developing the proposition, writing a good brief, and answering it with a creative and 'relevant abruption'.This was one of the most enjoyable,  refreshing and somewhat confronting chats I've had on the podcast. If you want to hear diverse opinions from some of the world's most innovative thinkers, then this is it. But brace yourself, Steve pulls no punches. And I absolutely love it. And I know you will too. Lena Robinson's a straight-talking Kiwi that has built a powerful reputation for herself as savvy business person in London over the last 17 years. In 2018 she threw a grenade into her life to start FTSQ. She wanted to create a community that supported non-conformists and the business owners within that community. The aim being to support them, via her consultancy, in achieving everything they were told they couldn't by F***ing with The Status Quo. She uses all of the knowledge, experience and the huge network of people she's gained after almost 30 years in business across multiple countries to help others. She's had a highly successful career in 'adland', started three companies (FTSQ's her third, she sold her second). Has traded her parents business out of near disaster when the Inland Revenue (NZ equivalent to HMRC) threatened to end them. Has mentored many bright young people that have gone on to do amazing things, and has made millions for the companies she's worked for and with. Lena is a tenacious, force of nature. She's a maverick, but she's also a caregiver, she will forever watch over the non-conformists, because they often struggle to stand up for themselves, she does so because she often sees in them that others do not. Lena believes there is power in the unconventional, the different and the unorthodox. Here's what we'll be discussing on this episode: Non-conformists. Being a non-conformist in big agency corporate life ie WPP (OgilvyOne, OgilvyAction, Wunderman), Vizeum, Dentsu etc. Why FTSQ Exists - what is FTSQ all about? My life story - it's a doozy Being a woman in business and not really feeling OK with being called a feminist - because I don't think I am Being a Kiwi in the UK There's power in your difference My illness - battling that while trying to keep my business alive Let non-conformists know that there is a safe place to come to - FTSQ is a community where they can be weird, odd, unorthodox and know they'll be ok to be themselves there. Where one rule, rules all 'just don't be a dick'. Cause if you are, you answer to the Boss Lady and she will kick your ass out!
