Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode examines the many ways animals shape life in Ambridge and what their stories reveal about both farming practice and human relationships.“It's a ferret ferris wheel!”: Depictions of Human–Animal Interactions and Animal Welfare in The Archers - Tamzin Furtado and Tamsin DurstonAnimals are central to Ambridge life, whether as livestock, wildlife or family pets. This paper explores how The Archers uses animals to convey messages about farming practice, ethics, personality and community.Examples range from Mia's veganism and the disruption of the Ambridge Hunt, to Lilian's unruly Ruby, Peggy's demanding Hilda Ogden, Pip's herbal lays, Freddie's abattoir stint and the Rewilding project. The paper also considers how real-world issues such as the 2021 pig slaughter crisis and equine obesity are reflected in the programme, alongside the grief of losing beloved animals like Stella's dog Weaver or Bartleby the horse.Through these depictions, the paper invites listeners to recognise the role of nonhuman animal actors in shaping the village's stories and our understanding of Ambridge residents.About the speakersDr Tamzin Furtado and Tamsin Durston - The Tams of The Am - both work in animal welfare science with a focus on the intersection of human and animal wellbeing and are equally devoted to life in Ambridge. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

Brad and Amber head home from the cricket. Amber admits to being bored. Even when Brad enthuses over the winning highlights she eyerolls that life's too short. She updates Brad on being thrown out of Spiritual Home. Brad suggests Kate might be someone who finds it hard to forgive and forget – she'll definitely be off George's welcome home party list then. Amber suggests a big bash at the village hall. Brad favours Grange Farm, where Amber will have more control.[Amber resolves to ask Eddie. Her phone pings with followers incessantly, and Brad challenges her to turn it off. He points out the full moon, but she's not looking. Exasperated, he asks her if she can't do something else. Amber defends her influencer status. She wasn't clever enough or pretty enough at school, and this is something she's good at. And she'll get even better once she's had her teeth done. Brad wants to know she's doing this for herself and not because someone online says so. Amber starts to cry and runs off.The Ambridge team celebrate their win despite certain relegation. The mood's darkened by the arrival of Lawrence. Lynda insists she's standing by Zainab and the complaint, meeting Lawrence's menacing threats with an announcement to the pub crowd. She encourages Lawrence to bring up the subject of team payments. Lynda admits they have paid players, and apologises. Lily's horrified Lynda's taking the blame, but Freddie reckons they should quietly leave. Tom and Adam reckon this is divisive, setting friend against friend. They need to take action.

As Stella rolls up her sleeves for another day at Brookfield, David mentions a job he's seen advertised that might be a good fit for her. Stella admits she saw it but dismissed it as too much of an executive role. She's more farm than strategy. David argues she has all the experience and ideas they need – she should apply. She has nothing to lose. Stella agrees to give it some thought. Later grateful Pip thanks her dad for talking Stella round – she's filling in the application right now. Pip loves how her parents have accepted Stella into the family and are open to her ideas.Against her better judgement Chelsea's returned to the golf club with keen Zainab. She's worried that Lynda's sent the email about Lawrence – what if they see him? Zainab reassures her; there's nothing they can do about it anyway. Martyn arrives and sense something's wrong, so they explain about the blackmail threat. He offers to meet them later to discuss it further. Chelsea unwittingly divulges to Martyn that Justin's buying more land. Over lunch Martyn admits to finding Lawrence's behaviour bizarre. Right on cue Lawrence appears. He protests that Chelsea and Zainab are turning Ambridge against him, and Martyn's accusation of harassment just proves how he's also been taken in by them. After unacceptable insult towards Zainab, Martyn demands Lawrence apologises, but Lawrence compounds the situation and Zainab throws her drink over him in response. She instantly regrets it but Chelsea and Martyn think she was brave. Zainab just feels she's made it all worse.

One of the many diverse educational opportunities at the U.S. Army War College are specialized seminars that deep-dive into specific areas of interest. Kurt McDowell and Mike Smith participated in the AY25 Futures Seminar, and they're in the studio with host Darrell Driver to discuss their findings. Sponsored by the J-7, Lieutenant General Anderson, the seminar was tasked with exploring innovation for maneuver warfare in 2040. , McDowell, Smith and the team advocate for an "elastic mindset" and "effectual logic," a means-based approach that focuses on what's available, rather than a traditional causal, end-state approach. They contrast this with the military's current high-certainty planning scenarios, which are often based on specific threats like Russia and China. The first kind of foundational key finding is that the elastic mindset is essential for U.S. military innovation. Kurt McDowell is a colonel in the U.S. Army and the Director of the Washington Field Office for U.S. Southern Command. Previously, he held key armor and information operations roles, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and assignments on the Joint Staff and in U.S. Army Europe and Africa. He is a graduate of the AY25 Resident Course at the U.S. Army War College. Michael Smith is a U.S. Army colonel and an Army space operations officer. He most recently served as the Chief of Operations (G33) at U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command and deployed multiple times in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and United Assistance. He is a native of Ambridge, PA, and is a graduate of the AY25 Resident Program at the U.S. Army War College. Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode takes a lighthearted but well-informed look at funeral directing in Ambridge, using real-world research and practice as its frame.Funeral Directing in the UK through an Ambridge Lens - Abi PattendenWhat might funeral provision look like in Ambridge? This paper considers current UK funeral trends and applies them to the village's farming community on the edge of Birmingham. It imagines how existing Ambridge businesses could diversify: farms becoming natural burial grounds, Fallon catering for funeral receptions, or Brookfield's barn hosting gatherings. Could the proposed electric charging station even house a funeral directors? Drawing on demographic knowledge, past storylines and sector research, the paper explores how such services might emerge, while also noting how other continuing dramas have embedded funeral businesses into their communities.About the speakerAbi Pattenden has been a Funeral Director for 16 years and served as President of the National Association of Funeral Directors in 2018–19. She has previously presented at Academic Archers on funeral provision for Joe Grundy, Ambridge's death rates, and on comparing Rob Titchener to Shakespeare's Iago. This paper traces its story from its origins in the 18th century, through its heyday up to the 1920s, its years of decline, and the plans for its restoration and reconnection to the national waterways network via the River Severn.Drawing on the history of British canals, the presentation highlights the economic, social and environmental benefits of waterways, their transformative impact on communities, and what this could mean for Ambridge and its neighbours. Endorsements from waterways ambassadors including Sir David Suchet, Griff Rhys Jones, John Bishop, Sir Tim Smit, and Timothy Spall enrich the case for restoration.Following the conference, the Felpersham Canal Trust will launch as a Community Interest Company, creating a central hub for knowledge and resources to support over 50 restoration projects across the UK. It may even prove useful to The Archers scriptwriters.About the speakerPaul Rodgers is a passionate advocate for the UK's navigable canals and waterways. He has appeared on BBC Radio and Countryfile, and worked with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Waterways to bring the sector's challenges to government attention. Henry's a success at bowling but when Freddie praises him, Henry's concerned about being encouraged to bowl short. Later Freddie notices that Henry's being really hesitant and coaches him to give it a bit more clout. But Henry's worried about bowling in that style, particularly against the women players. Chelsea bumps into Freddie at the cricket and asks about his experience with Lawrence. Lawrence was really sexist to her and Zainab at the golf club last week and Martyn's put a complaint in for them at the club.Robert's back from looking after Leonie but seems out of sorts. When Lynda probes him he admits that sometimes he feels like he's competing with the whole of Ambridge for Lynda's attention. And the last fortnight has been extreme. He sometimes needs Lynda more than the village does. When Lynda counters that he could have unloaded to her at any point, Robert explains that he tried but she was always busy. Lynda starts to apologise when it appears that someone on the cricket pitch has been hurt. It turns out a woman batter's hand has been injured by a ball bowled by Henry. She's taken off to A and E as a precaution.Ambridge win against the Borchester Fourths but both Chelsea and Robert think Henry's bowling style was pretty fierce. Freddie congratulates Henry, but instead of joining them all for celebrations at The Bull, Henry just wants to go home. When Freddie points out they won fair and square, Henry laments that it doesn't feel like that.

Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode features a single paper that explores how Aristotle and Greek tragedy continue to shape the drama of Ambridge.Aristotle's Poetics fuel Ambridge Drama - Sally KnightsThis paper demonstrates how The Archers has roots in Greek tragedy, and how knowledge of ancient drama can enrich the listener's appreciation of the programme.Using Aristotle's Poetics, the theatre of Dionysus, and the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, the paper draws clear parallels between Greek theatre and Ambridge. Questions such as “Who is the Ambridge chorus leader?” and “Where do the writers employ deus ex machina?” sit alongside reflections on how pity, fear and family conflict remain central to its storylines. The comic tradition is also considered, with Greek vase imagery of wine festivals providing a striking link to the Grundys and the cider club.Delivered with humour, rhetorical questions, and references to both Greek terms and Ambridge plotlines, this paper shows how ancient and modern drama are closely connected.About the speakerSally Knights taught Classics for 20 years at Filton College, Bristol, including a sabbatical at Newnham College, Cambridge, and also taught at Redland High, Bristol. She has chaired the Bristol Classical Association, supported local schools through the University of Bristol's outreach network, and produced Greek tragedies at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2010 and 2014. Publications include GCSE Classical Civilisation (OUP, 2009) and The World of the Hero (Bloomsbury, 2017). Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode shares the three papers from the session The Men of Ambridge, exploring fathers and sons, brothers, and shifting ideas of masculinity in the village. He's his father's son – in word or deed? - Katharine Hoskyn & Deborah Miller“Every father should remember one day his son will follow his example, not his advice,” said Charles F. Kettering. This paper considers how far that holds true in Ambridge. It explores patterns of behaviour across three generations of male Archers and Grundys, focusing on Ben and Josh Archer, Tom Archer, and George Grundy. While much academic work highlights similarities between mothers and daughters, this research asks whether father–son connections in Ambridge are stronger than we might assume.Katharine Hoskyn lives in rural New Zealand and manages research at Auckland University of Technology. Her academic background spans social science, business and sport, with a focus on community issues. A listener since 1968, she is also part of the Archers Cats online community.Deborah Miller is based in the North East of England and works in the health sector, having previously worked in local government. With a background in history, politics and leadership studies, she has listened to The Archers since 1978.‘A man had two sons': A sort of sermon on Luke 15v11 - Jonathan HustlerSibling rivalry is a theme running through myths, scripture, and The Archers alike. From Kenton and David to Rex and Toby, the storylines echo biblical and cultural archetypes that raise questions of fairness and loyalty.Drawing on the Prodigal Son parable and Genesis narratives, this paper reflects on how rivalries in Ambridge invite listeners to take sides while leaving space for unresolved endings, just as the Bible's stories do.Jonathan Hustler is a Methodist Minister who has taught Church History and Practical Theology. He currently serves as Secretary of The Methodist Conference. The Playboy, the Father, the Scholar and the Brute: Ambridge Masculinities in Historical Perspective - Jessica MeyerRecent storylines have brought masculinity in Ambridge under scrutiny, with George Grundy's behaviour framed as toxic and Ben Archer's breakdown raising questions of fragility. But crises of masculinity are not new. This paper situates these characters, alongside Freddie Pargeter and Brad Horrobin, within a longer history of social anxiety about manhood, from post-war Britain to modern cultural debates. Using historical and sociological theory, it argues that Ambridge's young men may be more complex than the labels suggest.Jessica Meyer is Professor of British Social and Cultural History at the University of Leeds. She specialises in the gender history of the First World War and has published extensively on masculinity, history and popular culture. She also co-presents Oh! Despite his relaxed appearance Akram confesses to David that he's worried about the Ambridge versus Grey Gables team event Lynda's asked him to come up with for the fete. Kirsty commiserates, before they all agree a tug of war would fit the bill nicely. Later, Akram tells Kirsty that Lynda loves the idea, so he's started asking round for potential team members. But then Dane messages with a photo of the Grey Gables team he's put together – they're all gym regulars and look scarily good.Brian tells Adam he's heard the Gills are selling the house at Home Farm, but he's in no position to buy it now. Adam's worried that Justin's rewilding scheme stands to cost Home Farm thousands in revenue at a time when food production should be their highest priority. He urges Brian to take action, suggesting he should already have done so, thereby raising Brian's hackles. Brian retorts that he doesn't need Adam's advice. Adam then calls Alice and Kate for an emergency meeting on Home Farm's future. He feels Stella hasn't done enough to protect their interests and Lilian won't stop Justin either. Kate thinks Justin's rewilding initiative is a good thing environmentally, but Adam reckons Debbie's on his side, while Alice says Ruairi will support continued food production. Kate supposes they need to come up with a plan, especially if there's doubt over Brian's ability to take the farm forward. Brian then turns up and is immediately suspicious, suggesting a walk so they can tell him just what they've been gossiping about.

In this episode, I talk with Alex Fogleman about reclaiming the forgotten art of catechesis - not as rigid instruction, but as a living tradition that helps form whole people in the way of Jesus. We explore how the early church shaped new believers, what we've lost in our fast-paced, fragmented culture, and how we might recover a slower, deeper approach to discipleship today. This conversation offers a compelling vision for how we grow - not just in knowledge, but in love, practice, and maturity.Alex Fogleman is Associate Dean of Special Programs and Assistant Professor of Theology at Trinity Anglican Seminary in Ambridge, PA. Author of Knowledge, Faith, and Early Christian Initiation (Cambridge University Press, 2023) and Making Disciples (Eerdmans, 2025)Alex's Book:Making DisciplesAlex's Recommendation:The Wingfeather SagaSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. While watching the cricket against Greenbury Usha tells Joy she just needs to be herself at her interview tomorrow for the kitchen job at The Bull and she'll be fine. On the field Henry is last man out, while Brad can't stop sneezing. As the players come in for tea Clarrie appears upset when Helen asks how her dinner lady job is going. Henry tells Helen he saw some older kids at school being rude to Clarrie when she told them to sit down, but didn't intervene because it would have made things worse. When Henry goes Clarrie tells Helen how humiliating the incident was. She always thought she was good at supervising kids, but this generation don't have any respect. After the match Henry tells Clarrie that the only way to deal with those kids is to be firm and not take any nonsense. Clarrie is doubtful she can do that, but Henry reminds her what she was like at Bridge Farm, never a passenger. Do the same at school and she'll be fine. Brad tells Usha and Joy he hasn't got hay fever, but Tracy's accused him of getting the Ambridge score wrong. The Greenbury scorer, Terence, agrees with Brad's tally, but both Usha and Joy remember a second four hit by Will while Brad left the score box to blow his nose and Terence took over. Later, Terence claims he missed the extra four by mistake and has rectified it. But the extra runs don't alter the fact that Ambridge lost and Brad has hay fever!

Ben finds Susan at the Shop struggling under a mountain of deliveries and helps her clear some space for customers. The deliveries are part of Susan's initiative to expand the Shop's range of products, but it looks like it'll be a struggle to put new shelves up and fit everything in before Joy's next shift on Saturday. Then Joy turns up, dismayed to find the stock room full and boxes all over the place. Susan tries to sell Akram some screws and is delighted she can offer him a mallet, before he starts revelling in the cornucopia of hardware items Susan has ordered. Susan's convinced everything's going to be fine now. When Justin tells Lilian he's changed his mind about going on a months-long cruise she replies that it's too late, she's committed to staying in Ambridge, looking out for Alice, Tony, the Stables and The Bull. Lilian wonders why Justin's made a U-turn. He can't exactly say why, but the meeting with Arthur has prompted thoughts about looking after one another as they get older. Justin fancies doing some good in the world, taking Arthur as his example. They go to see Kirsty at the Rewilding, wanting to talk about the art installation Peggy's donation will be funding. They're looking for something to attract more visitors, but not too many. While visiting the pond Lilian recalls a childhood game and pushes Justin in. Luckily he sees the funny side and ends up laughing with Lilian and Kirsty, imagining Peggy looking down and laughing too.

Joy gives Susan the latest batch of Shop surveys, while Ben is asked what he'd like them to change. Joy suggests letting dogs in, but Susan's not keen, preferring Azra's idea of introducing a hardware section. Later, Ben catches up with Joy, grateful to her for remembering when he broke down at the Shop over Bess, knowing that's why she suggested allowing dogs. Joy admits the guilt she feels over Rochelle turning out the way she has, but Ben reminds Joy of the role she played in his recovery – their conversation on the Green that day was a turning point for him. He's certain something similar could happen to Rochelle.Alice has brought Martha to Chris's flat, where he's planned a day in and around Ambridge, inviting Alice to join them at the playground. Alice wants to talk about the effect her drinking during pregnancy had on Martha's development. Chris thinks it's a massive leap, but Alice has been dreading the thought of foetal alcohol syndrome for years and the nursery visit on Friday hasn't helped. At the playground later Chris tries convincing Alice there's nothing wrong with Martha, but she wants to see a doctor as soon as possible. Chris worries she's torturing herself unnecessarily, while Alice suggests he's more worried she'll start drinking again. When Susan approaches they're happy to talk about letting dogs in the shop instead. Afterwards Chris says he'll go to the doctors with Alice, who's really grateful. She wouldn't blame Chris for hating her after what she's done to Martha.

At the Shop Jim tries a super-courteous approach to get Lilian to fill in the survey, while Jazzer adds a mocking commentary. It's only when Jim spells out the existential threat Underwoods Local poses that Lilian agrees to answer the questions. Between them Jazzer and Lilian come up with several suggestions for improvements. Then Jazzer points out the biggest issue is friendliness – or the lack of it - and despite Jim's denial Lilian agrees that it's an issue. Later on Jazzer snatches Lilian's completed survey, reading out her score for friendliness: three out of five. He tells Jim it's not going to save the shop. Jim confesses how exhausting he finds maintaining the façade of friendliness and his relief at going to stay at his daughter's next week. But Jazzer loves it when Jim is grumpy! While Chris is relatively relaxed before the meeting about Martha at the nursery, Alice can't help thinking there must be a serious problem. The manager tactfully points out that Martha has haphazard concentration levels and limited attention span. She suggests working together with the staff to get Martha to focus on tasks for longer. Chris is happy to go along with this but Alice seems more troubled. Back at the Stables Lilian pushes Alice to confess her fear that her drinking during pregnancy is now affecting Martha's development. And if Lilian leaves Ambridge then that's another huge plank of Alice's support network gone, after Jennifer and Peggy. Lilian tells her she's changed her mind and she's not going anywhere.

At Chris's Forge captain Hannah gets very frustrated by Chris and Adam's lack of competitive edge for this afternoon's T20 cricket match against Jolene's team. Alice joins them and promises Chris that she and Martha will be there, cheering on both sides.Over lunch at the Dower House Justin catches Lilian scrolling through a world cruises website. Justin's appalled as Lilian outlines her plans for their retirement, going on exotic holidays. Just the thought of the family holiday Peggy stipulated in her will is enough to make Justin quail. In any case, he enjoys working far too much to give it up, but reluctantly agrees to talk about Lilian's proposal later.During the cricket innings break Hannah chastises her ‘Elite' team-mates for batting so poorly and can't understand why Chris and Adam aren't taking it more seriously. Jolene however is loving how well her ‘Underdog' team performed in the field. Alice joins Justin and Lilian on the boundary edge, apologising for not being more receptive yesterday to Lilian's idea of leaving Ambridge. She now thinks Lilian should go ahead and do whatever is best for her and Justin. Once Alice has gone though, Justin makes it clear to Lilian he's still not keen. The cricket ends in defeat for Hannah's team, with everybody repairing to The Bull for drinks and a T20 photograph. Chris and Alice tentatively agree to spend more family time together with Martha, and Alice says she'll accompany Adam to keep an eye on Helen when she goes for her date at Grey Gables on Wednesday.
