In this episode to start off Season 5, I interview Dr. Kevin DeYoung, a popular author, Presbyterian pastor, as well as noted theologian and historian. Drawing on DeYoung' book, The Religious Formation of John Witherspoon (2020), we dive into Witherspoon's fascinating life as a Scottish preacher and Reformed apologist who became the president of Princeton University, one of America's Founding Fathers and signers of the Declaration of Independence, and a teacher and mentor to James Madison. We examine the place Witherspoon takes in the history of American and religious thought, as well as how he models a spirit of religious devotion with republican self-government in an example that is still relevant for us today. Before the Constitution was written, John Witherspoon was shaping the minds that would build it. Who was John Witherspoon and how did he influence James Madison and the Constitution? Discover how this forgotten Founder helped define America's moral and constitutional DNA, and taught a Republic how to think. This episode of the America's Founding Series explores how John Witherspoon's philosophy of "self-evident truths," moral realism, and human nature influenced James Madison and the structure of the United States Constitution. At a time when civilizational seriousness feels in short supply, Witherspoon's ideas about education, virtue, and limited government reveal why the survival of a republic begins in the classroom. It's time for a MATA moment – Make Americans Think Again – by looking at the Witherspoon model that we've abandoned. What You'll Learn Why John Witherspoon's teachings shaped James Madison and Federalist 51 The true meaning of "self-evident truths" in the Declaration of Independence How Scottish Common Sense philosophy grounded America's natural rights framework Why the doctrine of human fallibility led to checks and balances What modern leadership can learn from Witherspoon's model of education and statesmanship If the West is struggling with strategic and moral drift, the solution may lie in rediscovering the intellectual foundation laid by John Witherspoon.
The Seattle Seahawks are now two-time Super Bowl Champions and it still feels surreal. We're continuing the celebration with a full walkthrough of the win over New England and a preview of some of the major offseason topics. Seattle set the tone early, flipped field position through elite special teams, and leaned on a dominant defense that consistently harassed Drake Maye. Kenneth Walker kicked off his campaign for MVP early and the offensive line established their physicality on the first play of the game. Some outstanding plays by the Patriots defense kept Seattle out of the end zone in the first half, but Jason Myers was still able to help build a two-score cushion going into the half. The defense continued to overwhelm New England in the third quarter and held them scoreless. The contributions throughout the game included sacks by Devon Witherspoon, Byron Murphy, Derick Hall and rookie Rylie Mills. As Maye continued to get rattled, it led to key turnovers. Julian Love called his own interception as we saw in the mid'd up version of the Super Bowl. Byron Murphy recovered a fumble that led to the Seahawks only offensive touchdown by AJ Barner, and a Witherspoon pressure gave Uchenna Nwosu a score to match the Seahawks offensive touchdown output. We tackle the debate around Sam Darnold's performance—praised for poise against pressure and also criticized for a missed end-zone throw and a completion percentage that was among his lowest of the season. Offseason questions emerge along the way. How does Seattle sustain a title run? How should they handle some key free agents like Josh Jobe and Tariq Woolen? Do they need to approaches their big-money extensions for JSN and Witherspoon before making some of the more difficult decisions. Coaching and organizational themes surface too, from Mike McDonald's game planning and halftime adjustments to the team's continuity of culture. The episode closes with shout-outs to our members of the flock, listener emails, parade moments, and a nod to Jody Allen as the steady hand atop a championship organization. February 8, 2026 Just like the Super Bowl highlights a few players while dozens work faithfully behind the scenes, the church only thrives when everyone steps off the sidelines and uses their gifts to serve. In Acts 6, the early church faced growing pains and discovered that when each person stepped into their God-given calling—listening to needs, sharing responsibility, and serving where they were gifted—the church grew stronger, healthier, and the gospel spread further. The invitation for us is simple: don't just attend church, get in the game, because when every part of the body serves, God multiplies the impact. About this Sermon Series: The book of Acts tells the story of how the exalted Christ sends His Spirit to empower His people to continue His work in the world. Through the Spirit's power, ordinary believers boldly proclaim the gospel, witness miraculous works, and form vibrant communities that embody God's welcome to all people. Acts traces how the church's witness, energized by the Spirit, extends from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, revealing Christ's ongoing work through His people and the Spirit's leading in every new challenge and opportunity.

February 1, 2026 The Holy Spirit empowers believers to live boldly, not blending in but standing out so the world doesn't miss the message of Jesus. Through Acts 4, we see that boldness flows from being with Jesus—expressed in courageous testimony, fearless prayer, and generous, sacrificial living even in the face of opposition. As we spend time with Jesus and remain filled with the Holy Spirit, God calls us away from comfortable consumption and into courageous contribution for His mission. About this Sermon Series: The book of Acts tells the story of how the exalted Christ sends His Spirit to empower His people to continue His work in the world. He recently gained notoriety thanks to a viral video showing him learn a new sweeper in a few minutes. And he just might be the 2026 version of Trey Yesavage if anything breaks right for him and the Red Sox. Bradfo and the guys from Play Tessie (Sammy and Gordo) caught up with Kyson for a wildly entertaining conversation that includes his dislike for the Yankees and a great story about being a twin. January 25, 2026 In this weekend's sermon, we continued the story of the early church living out their faith in everyday life. As Peter and John head to the temple to pray, God uses them to bring healing to a man who had been lame from birth—drawing a crowd and creating an opportunity to share Jesus. Acts 3:1–21 makes it clear the miracle isn't the main point—Jesus is. Peter redirects the attention to Christ, reminding everyone that the power comes through faith in His name. This passage calls us to live with obedience and availability, staying open to divine interruptions, continually checking our hearts, repenting, and finding true hope and refreshment in Him as we live a “follow me as I follow Christ” kind of life. About this Sermon Series: The book of Acts tells the story of how the exalted Christ sends His Spirit to empower His people to continue His work in the world. Lean in as Pastor Markus Witherspoon teaches a message that inspires us to Begin our week in worship, belong together in Life Groups, and be the church through serving!

In this episode, I'm joined by YA romance author, Sujin Witherspoon to talk about writing emotionally honest love stories, creating chemistry that actually works, and why teenage feelings are never “too much.” We also discuss flawed characters, quiet vulnerability, hot rodent men, and the scenes authors fight editors over. Equal parts thoughtful and unhinged, this conversation is for readers who annotate books, fall for fictional people a little too hard, and still think about their favorite YA romance years later.

Confessing Our Hope: The Podcast of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
What hope does the covenant of grace offer when a baptized child dies? In this episode Jonathan Master explores T.D. Witherspoon's Children of the Covenant (1873), written in the wake of profound loss and grounded in God's promises rather than sentiment. Through the lives of three covenant children, Witherspoon points grieving parents and churches to Christ, the ordinary means of grace, and the sure consolation of belonging to Him.
He Shall Be Called, Part 5 Pastor Markus Witherspoon December 24, 2025 In the final week of Advent, Pastor Markus Witherspoon of Newbreak Church Tierrasanta Campus will lead us in reflecting on the powerful names of Jesus that reveal the heart of God for us. In his sermon, "He Shall Be Called," Pastor Markus will highlight the significance of these names as more than just titles—they are the keys to understanding who Jesus is and what He came to do. As we approach Christmas, this message invites us to move beyond the nostalgia of the season and embrace the deep, personal revelation of God's love and purpose, made flesh in Christ. It's a call to open our hearts to the Savior whose arrival changes everything, not just for that first Christmas, but for our lives today. As we prepare for Christmas, we'll see that the story of His coming is more than nostalgia—it's the revelation of God's heart, up close and personal, in Christ, for us, today.
