This time on Basic Folk, we are checking in with country singer-songwriter and Color Me Country radio host Rissi Palmer and Americana country artist Miko Marks. The two close friends both came up as Black women in country music in the early part of the 21st century where they experienced gatekeepers and discrimination in the industry, but undeniable love from listeners. Both stepped away from music for several years, but have since come back and found their audiences, artistic grooves, and industry independence. We last spoke with the pair in 2023 (you gotta go listen to that convo if ya missed it!) and have wanted them back on ever since!Rissi and Miko dive into who they think is making waves and positive change in country and Americana. We talk about rising pop-country singer Adell Tanner and her 2023 hit "Buckle Bunny," a song that's clearly written for a different kind of country music fan (read: young Black women). Rissi mentions having Mississippi country sensation KIRBY on her show recently and promises her upcoming 'Miss Black America' to be a monster of an album. There was a lot of consensus on the podcast that Madeline Edwards has released the best album of 2025 with her record 'Fruit,' where she digs into the extreme grief and extreme joy she experienced after her brother passed away.Elsewhere, we also touch on the pair's experiences at Rhiannon Giddens' inaugural Biscuits & Banjos fest in Durham earlier this year, an event dedicated to reclamation and exploration of Black music. We talk about Alice Randall's new compilation, 'My Black Country - The Songs of Alice Randall,' a collection of Randall compositions recorded by Black women – including selections performed by both Miko and Rissi. We talk about audiences in London versus the US, a contrast BF co-host Lizzie as well as Rissi and Miko have experienced first hand. In fact, Rissi has been curating a Color Me Country stage at The Long Road Festival in Leicestershire, England for the past four years. We hope you learn something new, get some insight into what's happening in Americana for musicians who are Black, and gain some joy from listening to Rissi and Miko's hilarious banter.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined around the campfire by folklorist, YouTuber, and all-round champion for Staffordshire, Jack Raven! As anyone familiar with his documentaries and video essays will know, 'Jack Raven' is a character - a talking, animated corvid - inspired by the 20th century Staffordshire folklorist and musician Jon Raven (he of the Black Country Three) who was, alas, only human. In addition to creating and maintaining the Staffordshire Folklore YouTube channel though, and having a sharp beak and pinions as dark as shadows, Jack also manages two other YouTube channels dedicated to Staffordshire's history and folk heritage.Plus, he also collects folklore from his local area, and, while also being very funny, creative, imaginative, and generous, he is truly dedicated and careful in his research too. That this episode is slightly longer than the average Local Legends interview speaks to how enjoyable he is to talk to, and his passion for Staffordshire's history and legends. We could have gone on for hours! It's a fascinating conversation, featuring, in addition to plenty else, Black Country chain makers, Staffordshire potteries, infamous poisoners, Hands of Glory, and the reality behind the many unsettling legends of Cannock Chase...You can learn more about Jack and his work through his Campsite here, and the comparative map tool he mentions in the conversation is available here. But for right now, let us settle in, nice and close, around the Three Ravens campfire and listen in to a chat about crumbling Gothic ruins, the infamous case of Staffordshire ne'er do well William Booth, the life of a folklore YouTuber, and so much more, with a true Local Legend: Jack Raven.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Hosted on Acast. On the week's episode of Three Ravens we're mining out the black gold of history and folklore of Staffordshire - a county with some pretty dark parts, and some very silly ones, too.We start off discussing the tradition of Rogationtide, a week-long celebration that would have started today, which basically involved smacking the ghosts out of your village, all before we sally forth to Staffordshire! We begin with some pretty cool bits of history, including the Black Country industry of chain-making and its relation to the Chained Oak of Alton, the mythical slaughter that gave Lichfield its name, and the rather lofty 'Old Man of Mow,' all before Martin tries to excite us with pretty meagre fare, before pulling out a military-themed pudding for this week's County Dish.Next, we get elbow-deep in folklore, from the doings of Jacobean giant 'Big Wally' Parsons and the church-eating Dragon of Wednesbury to boggarts including Rawhead and Bloody Bones and Dumb Baw to so much else besides, all enhanced by some excerpts from Saturday's upcoming Local Legends interview with Jack Raven, the canny corvid behind the Staffordshire Folklore YouTube channel. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's telling of "The Mermaid of the Black Mere of Morridge" - a slightly murky legend about love, murder, and a mysterious pool that might just lead down the fairyland...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and will be back on Thursday with both a new Forgotten Melodies bonus episode about Villain Songs and a Patreon-exclusive episode of Three Ravens Film Club about 2001's Session 9, all before the full interview with Jack Raven comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

Singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, record producer, and A&R man Swamp Dogg has done it all in his 65 plus years in the music business. Starting out in West Virginia in the 1950s, as "Little" Jerry Williams, he blazed a trail across the country with stops in Nashville, and finally his funky home in Los Angeles, which is the setting for the great new documentary, Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted. Swamp spoke to us about the film, and about his long, illustrious and, at times notorious, career including his countrified album from last year, Blackgrass: From West Virginia to 125th Street, on the Oh Boy! label. There was no way we were gonna get to talk about everything, so go see the film when and wherever you can.  The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. Vanguardistas have more fun—so if you don't already subscribe to the podcast, join the Vanguard today via Apple Podcasts or extratakes.com for non-fruit-related devices. In return you'll get a whole extra Take 2 alongside Take 1 every week, with bonus reviews, more viewing recommendations from the Good Doctors and whole bonus episodes just for you. And if you're already a Vanguardista, we salute you. The 50th anniversary re-release of ‘Slade in Flame' is making Mark very happy this week, and he'll be reviewing this “Citizen Kane of rock movies” at the top of the show to celebrate. Starring the real-life Black Country glam rockers as the fictional band Flame, it follows their rapid rise and fall via record company clashes that reveal the darker side of the music industry. Plus, new (and new-ish) releases ‘Thunderbolts*', the Marvel anti-hero ensemble starring Florence Pugh, and ‘Sinners'—Ryan Coogler's 1930s southern gothic tale of two twin brothers coming face to face with evil when they return to their Mississippi hometown in search of a new start. It came out while we were on our holibobs, so we're catching up this week with a full review and some top takes from those of you who have seen it already. ‘Another Simple Favor' is out this week too—and we've got director Paul Feig, also known for ‘Bridesmaids', ‘Spy' and, yes, the all-female Ghostbusters remake—on the show to talk Simon through it. A follow-up to the 2018 hit ‘A Simple Favor', it sees Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick reprise their roles in a genre-mashing comedy-mystery-crime-thriller, this time on the isle of Capri. Feig talks power dressing, breaking his no-sequels rule, and how that Blue Origin all-female space flight could definitely be straight out of one of his movies. Mark reviews it too—and we also hear plenty from you wonderful wittertainees, including your takes on Mark's ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith' review. Enjoy! Our guests today are the beloved British indie collective Black Country, New Road. The acclaimed art-rock band recently returned with their third studio album Forever Howlong—a bold and beautiful leap forward in both sound and spirit. Following the 2022 departure of frontman Isaac Wood—just before the release of their beloved second album Ants From Up There—the six remaining members embraced a new, collaborative direction. With no single frontperson, the group now shares the spotlight, crafting a more eclectic, playful, and emotionally resonant sound connecting with fans worldwide. In today's episode, we're joined by Luke Mark and Georgia Ellery to chat about the creative process behind Forever Howlong, working with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Kylie Minogue), and how this record marks a new era for the band. We also dive into standout track “For The Cold Country” and explore how the band is navigating this exciting chapter together.Black Country, New Road: Instagram / Spotify Purchase Forever Howlong and find Black Country, New Road tour dates hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.
