May the road rise to meet you. My note from a slow coach this week reflects on Baltic endorphins, some internal torment due to a decision made by my past self that my present self didn't appreciate, and a poem contemplating whether adventure is always just around the corner. It's an excerpt from a journal entry a couple of weeks ago when I was in Finland. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_VzkTNi53E I'm still feeling invigorated from last night's dip in the Baltic Sea. I don't know if it's the exhilaration of spending 90 seconds in 4-degree (Celsius) water or the satisfaction I feel from following through on my intention. Something caught me when I looked across the water a few days ago—a pull I couldn't ignore. The idea of getting in the water was great. Until it was time to do it. What was I thinking? The two hours leading up to my plunge were filled with antsy-pantsy pacing and flip-flopping. I was not amused by my decision. Still, I knew that if I didn't go through with it, the regret of missing this opportunity would far outweigh the momentary despair of doing something I knew would be wildly rewarding (once I resurfaced and was safely ensconced in the sauna—my happy place). This morning's inner calm is a blend of satisfaction and physical aliveness. The sauna not only offered a delightful reward for completing my challenge but also enhanced the experience. The contrast of fire and ice creates a unique sensation. Forever on the horizon This morning, I am returning to the list of phrases and ideas we developed at the start of our month of “Adventure” in The Haven. I had intended to use one each morning in my journal practice, but it hasn't happened yet. No problem, I am up for it today. Now. I spin the wheel, and it throws “Adventure is waiting just beyond view” onto the screen. I don't think it's a saying, but it feels familiar. Similar to the idea that adventure (or growth) lies on the other side of your comfort zone. I've always had a complex relationship with these platitudinal sayings. They carry kernels of truth for particular situations but are often espoused as universal, all-encompassing statements of fact. May the branch rise to meet them My eyes are drawn through the window. My first coffee of the day is on the cabinet beside me. Adventure is waiting just beyond view. Those words feel coarse to me here. Itchy. Like an irritant on my skin. I can see a squirrel moving effortlessly through the trees and a crow perched on a breeze-flexed branch above, and I wonder if they ever wonder about these things. It's tempting to get caught up in the assumption that everything good is just beyond view. It's the engine of consumer culture, the ideology of endless striving. Like a perpetual mirage, we see the reward, but it moves further as we get closer. "Just a little further" becomes a mantra in the meditation of hustle. Advice is cheap and contradictory. I am interested in how we can develop a more nuanced and healthy relationship with growth, purpose, and flow in life. If adventure is forever around the corner, what am I overlooking right here? To feel settled without settling and expectant without expecting. Isn't this moment the adventure that was just around the corner from that previous one? I think of the old blessing: “May the road rise to meet you.” Maybe that's the real adventure—the road meeting us where we are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjJXAL40MC4 May the flow rise to meet you From the edge of this perch,I strain my neck to watch a squirreldart, weightless, certain of the branchesthat will reach out and catch herwith every flight, twist, and descent. Is it true that I can find anAdventure waiting just beyond view? If I round the corner. If I push the button. If I make the call.If I am patient. If I lead.If I trust the process. If I take a step.If I listen. If I dare.If I follow. If I let this grow.If I am brave. If I am gentle.

Atopic eczema is the most common form of the disease among New Zealanders. New findings by a team of scientists from the NIH indicate two particular chemicals are responsible for triggering eczema in many cases - and these chemicals are likely hidden in our own homes.
Today, we're venturing into a topic that many of us might not think about — parasite and worm infections. These unseen invaders can wreak havoc on your health, yet often go unnoticed for a long time. And, despite all the supplements and peptide therapies we might be using to optimize our health, we may still be missing something very important: a potential parasite or worm infection. In this episode, we'll explore the signs and symptoms of these infections, how you can acquire them, and why we should consider them even if we're doing everything "right" in terms of diet and wellness. Let's get into it! First things first—what are parasites and worms, and how are they different?. A parasite is any organism that lives on or inside another organism, known as a host, and benefits at the host's expense. Parasites can be microscopic or visible to the naked eye. Parasites can take many forms, including: Protozoa (single-celled organisms like Plasmodium that causes malaria) Helminths (worms like roundworms, tapeworms, and flatworms) Ectoparasites (organisms like fleas, lice, or ticks that live on the host's skin or surface). They usually don't infect other parts of your body. When people refer to worm infections, they are typically talking about helminth infections. Helminths are a specific type of parasite, and they are multicellular organisms that can be categorized into three main types: Roundworms (e.g., hookworms, pinworms, and threadworms) Tapeworms Flukes (flatworms) So, all worm infections are parasitic, but not all parasites are worms. What are the symptoms of parasitic infections? So, how can you tell if you have a parasite/protozoa or a worm infection? Let's talk about signs and symptoms. Signs of a parasite infection can be a bit tricky because they often mimic other illnesses or conditions. You might experience: Diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus) Stomach cramps or bloating Fatigue Unexplained weight loss Skin rashes or itching Nausea or vomiting Fever Visible worms in stools or around the anus Itchy anus (especially with pinworm infections) Coughing or chest pain (in the case of certain lung-dwelling worms) Parasites can also affect your mood and mental health, causing things like anxiety or brain fog due to the toxins they release in your body. While some worm infections can be obvious, others may linger for years without being detected, causing slow, gradual damage to the body. How do you get parasitic infections? So, how do we acquire these infections? There are several ways you can pick up a parasite or worm, and it often depends on where you live, what you eat, and what activities you engage in. Let's break it down: Traveling: Traveling to areas with poor sanitation increases the risk of contracting Giardia and Cryptosporidium, two protozoan parasites commonly found in contaminated water or food. These parasites can lead to traveler's diarrhea, causing symptoms like severe stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and frequent watery diarrhea. In some cases, infections can lead to dehydration and fatigue, making it important to take precautions like drinking bottled water and avoiding undercooked food while traveling. Eating undercooked meat or fish: Undercooked pork or fish can harbor parasitic larvae, such as Trichinella in pork and Anisakis (Anne-e-sakis) in fish. When consumed, these parasites can survive in the digestive system and begin to infect the body. For example, Trichinella can cause trichinosis, leading to symptoms like muscle pain and fever, while Anisakis can cause abdominal pain and nausea. Properly cooking these meats to safe temperatures can kill the parasites and prevent infection. Contaminated Soil: Certain parasites, like hookworms, can enter your body through small breaks or pores in the skin if you walk barefoot on contaminated soil. Areas where you are most likely to encounter hookworms in soil include Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America (especially Central and South America), Caribbean Islands, and Southern United States (especially in areas with poor sanitation). Insects: Mosquitoes and other insects can transmit diseases caused by parasites, such as Plasmodium, the parasite responsible for malaria. Similarly, ticks can carry parasites like Babesia (buh-bee-zee-ah), which causes babesiosis (buh-bee-zee-OH-sis) Close contact: Some parasites are spread through human-to-human contact, especially in crowded or unsanitary conditions (e.g., schools, daycares, campgrounds, public restrooms, and nursing homes). For example, pinworms can be contracted by anyone, though they are most often seen in children. They are highly contagious, and you can acquire them through contact with contaminated surfaces or even from sharing bedding. How are parasitic infections diagnosed? Healthcare providers look for the parasites themselves or signs of them, such as their eggs, in your body fluids or tissues. To check for parasites, your provider might take samples from different areas, including: Your stool Blood Skin or any affected tissue Phlegm (sputum) Fluid around your brain and spinal cord (CNS fluid) In some cases, your provider might also use imaging tests like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to help diagnose a parasitic infection, depending on what symptoms you're experiencing. Now, this all ties into a bigger picture. Many people are investing heavily in their health these days—through supplements, peptide therapies, and cutting-edge wellness routines. And while these are all beneficial, they can't always protect us from hidden invaders like parasites and worms. What's more, many of the symptoms of a parasite or worm infection can mimic other conditions, and because we often don't think about these infections, they can go undiagnosed for years. If you're dealing with ongoing digestive issues, fatigue, skin problems, or even unexplained brain fog, it might be time to consider that a parasite or worm infection could be behind it—especially if you've recently traveled. Do you have friends that will help you with your itchy eyes? I know this question might sound silly to some, but I believe we should be genuinely concerned about this. I think that it is important for you to have people who are in your corner no matter what. For example, when Freddie Gibbs was talking recklessly about J. Cole there was a whole fanbase there to protect and defend Cole's name. In a negative context, at Diddy's most vulnerable time, one of his lawyers filed a motion to withdraw as his lawyer. So I ask you this one more time. Do your friends help you with your itchy eyes? If not maybe you're better off scratching them yourself. Scalp psoriasis affects nearly half of those with psoriasis, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and challenging forms of psoriasis to get under control. If you're reading this, you might already know how awful the itching, flaking, and emotional toll can be. Especially as many medications for psoriasis don't seem to work nearly as well for psoriasis on your scalp.Unfortunately, many people assume their scalp issues are due to dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis when, in fact, they are dealing with something far more complex. Especially as the inflammation worsens, there's a greater risk that the hair thinning could turn out to become permanent hair loss. That's why I'm thrilled to have Dr. Jenny Bennett back on the Healthy Skin Show. Tune in to learn about a secret OTC weapon you may not be aware of yet that Dr. Butler and I often recommend to our patients. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral. I have a question about fat pads. Like sacral fat pads and the “buffalo humps” specifically. I have read that diet and exercise hardly makes a difference for these. And liposuction seems to be the only thing that comes up to get rid of them. I understand we all store fat differently, but I'm curious about these specifically. Do you know if loss of body fat gets rid of these? Mine have gotten worse over a few years, and despite losing some weight ( maybe not enough yet) these areas don't seem to change. I'm a pretty petite person, but I do have some excess fat I would like to get rid of. This area troubles me and I feel a little hopeless that they don't change even with weight loss. Thank you! Chelsea: Hi Stephen, thank you for all your helpful information and knowledge. I've recently developed dry crack skin in between my fingers and a lot of bumps on my upper back and shoulders. I can't seem to pop the bumps, it's not like they're pimples. I thought the cracking in between my fingers was potentially a fungus like athletes foot? But I tried yeast infection cream and it didn't seem to help. This might be TMI, but I'm also very itchy in my genitals. However, test results came back negative for yeast infection or STDs. This has all started at the same time. Could it be related to my gut? Is this a histamine response? I recently did a gut and sibo test, I get my results on Thursday. I've had sibo before but I didn't have these symptoms. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks! Kayla: Hi Dr Cabral Thank you for all that you do, your podcasts bring me hope & calmness every time!I am 33 years old, overall good health, hypothyroidism 3.6 TSH, LPa high but all other markers (apo B, triglycerides etc good). I recently got my thermography results “cranial dental/thyroid exam” it shows I still have some inflammation around the sinus, neck, & thyroid resulting in possible nodules, last year I removed 4 cavitations, dead bone (dental surgery) & it seems I may still be infected on my upper left molar, I'm exhausted , I dont think I have the strength for surgery again , every year I do the big 5 labs, and overall my results are always very good since I continually do yearly protocols , I'm not sure what to do anymore, losing hope thyroid, neck inflammation. Kayla: Hi Dr Cabral, Could you speak more of Lipoprotein A (LPa) blood marker, my LPa is 158 & all my other markers are pretty optimal (ldl, hdl, apo b , triglycerides etc) my question is, what now? How do I live with high LPa if lifestyle “doesn't change the marker level” .. It feels like this will creep up on me, I take omega daily but theres talk about Niacin flush , I just need you to speak more of this I trust your insight & I want to know how to live worry free. Kellie: Hi Dr. Cabral! My husband really started focusing on improving his health over the past 5 years - annual physicals, routine dentist, exercise bike 30min/day, nicotine-free, homemade meat & veggie meals, etc. The only Rx the last 5 yrs is for HBP (lisinopril-hctz 20-25). He recently went through a Healthy Heart Screening and found out his Calcium Score is 39. Is that permanent or what can he do to get that back to 0?
