Strap in for a massive episode - in Episode 7 I'm joined by my good friends Erick Flores and Jaden Joslin from the band Native Tongue, consummate gamers both, to delve even deeper into CD Projekt Red's 'Cyberpunk 2077'. We chat about the actual experience of playing the game from its earliest release, as well as discussing the production of it through the lens of the current gaming industry, which has a lot in common and shares a lot of the same problems as the mainstream film industry, and the cultural industries at large. We cover the game's strengths as a work, the challenges of birthing such a juggernaut into the current culture that is both trying to be an open world RPG and tell a compelling story, and opine for what we specifically look for in games and cinema that our hegemonic culture seems to completely lack. This was an exciting episode to record as we touch on a range of subjects relating to the production of contemporary art, including the film 'Parasite' by Bong Joon-Ho and its resonance with Western audiences, the shift in the gaming industry from strong storytelling and artistry to the games-as-a-service model that relies on DLC and has heralded the death of complete projects, as well as the impact of Japanese video game auteurs like Hidetaka Miyazaki and his 'Dark Souls' series, and Shinji Mikami and his horror series 'The Evil Within'.Check out Native Tongue's latest song and music video 'Buffering', directed by yours truly: Buffering - Music VideoSupport the project at www.justinreid.com.au/support.Become a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $40 a year. The Mirror looks at cultural production through a critical and philosophical lens, emphasising the importance of historical understanding, deep reflection, and true situational awareness for developing higher levels of craftsmanship and discipline in artistic practice.Episode Links:Buffering - Native Tongue (Music Video)Evolution of a Filipino Family - Lav Diaz (Available on MUBI)Il Maestro - Martin Scorsese (Essay)itch.io - Independent Video Game Platform/CommunityThe Engoodening of No Man's Sky - Internet Historian (Video Essay)Lars Von Trier Interview: The Burden from Donald DuckArtworks Mentioned:Video GamesCyberpunk 2077The Witcher 3Dark SoulsDemon SoulsMass EffectFable: Anniversary SeriesStar Wars Knights of the Old RepublicUntil DawnRed Dead Redemption 2Final Fantasy 7Resident Evil 1,2,3,4,6,7Resident Evil: Code VeronicaThe Evil WithinDOOM 3ANTHEMFortniteFight CrabThe AvengersDestiny 2Dead SpaceThe DarknessDante's InfernoAsura's WrathThe Last of UsSuper Meat BoyHollow KnightManeaterShenmue 3Mighty No. 9Assasin's CreedRainbow Six: SiegeFar CryHellblade: Senua's SacrificeCall of DutyDOOM EternalResident Evil 8: VillageFilms and Television SeriesEvolution of a Filipino Family - Lav DiazParasite - Bong Joon-HoThe Revenant - Alejandro González IñárrituMarriage Story - Noah BaumbachBreaking Bad + Better Call Saul - Vince GilliganStar Wars: Sequel Series - JJ Abrams, Rian JohnsonSpawn - Mark A.Z. 节目中聊到的作品信息:电影 The Shape of Water《水行物语》豆瓣:https://movie.douban.com/subject/26752852/电影 Hell Boy《地狱男孩》豆瓣:https://movie.douban.com/subject/1308851/电影 Pan’s Labyrinth 《潘神的迷宫》爱奇艺免费:www.iqiyi.com/v_19rrk2nwjc.html电影 The Post 《华盛顿邮报》豆瓣:https://movie.douban.com/subject/26990609/电影 All The President’s Men 《总统班底》优酷VIP:v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjcyNzAyNTg4.html电影 Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House 《马克·费尔特:扳倒白宫之人》豆瓣:https://movie.douban.com/subject/26657525/新闻人的八卦书单凯瑟琳·格雷厄姆的自传《个人历史》豆瓣:https://book.douban.com/subject/4894612/本·布莱德利的《最危险的总编辑》/A Good Life豆瓣:https://book.douban.com/subject/1852500/Tina Brown 的 The Vanity Fair Diaries亚马逊:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XC4WCJT盖伊·特立斯/Gay Talese 的《王国与权力》/ The Kingdom and The Power豆瓣:https://book.douban.com/subject/26832725/马克·列伊博维奇/Mark Leibovich 的《真实的纸牌屋》/This Townhttps://book.douban.com/subject/26378392/Harold Evans 的 My Paper Chase亚马逊:https://www.amazon.cn/dp/B002TZ3CE0/Diana Vreeland 的 D.V. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Episode 2 THE SHAPE OF WATER - DOUG JONES Join Brad as he sits down with Doug Jones from The Shape of Water - Guillermo del Toro. After a hitch in theater in Indiana, he moved to Los Angeles in 1985, and has not been out of work since - he's acted in over 25 films, many television series (Including the award-winning Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997), his episode 'Hush' garnered two Emmy nominations) and over 90 commercials and music videos with the likes of Madonna and Marilyn Manson. Although known mostly for his work under prosthetics, he has also performed as 'himself' in such highly-rated films as Adaptation. (2002) with Nicolas Cage and indie projects such as Phil Donlon's A Series of Small Things (2005). But it is his sensitive and elegant performance as 'Abe Sapien' in Hellboy (2004), which stormed to the top of the U.S. box office in the spring of 2004, that has brought him an even higher profile and much praise from audiences and critics alike. SHAPE OF WATER - STAR TREK and more…
This week Sean and Steven dive deep into the mind of the one and only Guillermo del Toro. They first talk about his newest film called The Shape of Water starring Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, and a Fish-man. Then, they discuss the career of Guillermo del Toro and go specifically into his Spanish-language trilogy to see the progression of his career and how he got to where he is today.
