This week, we're diving deep into what it means to stay faithful when life feels like it's on pause. In Acts 23–28, we follow Paul's journey through imprisonment, shipwreck, and delay—only to see God move in unexpected and powerful ways. We're talking about what it looks like to trust God's timing, keep showing up in the waiting, and believe that even the hidden seasons are holy. Plus, you'll hear about epidurals, hospital delays, and what the Bible has to do with reality TV. (Yes, really.)Let's lean in and remember that God is just as present in our waiting as He is in our breakthrough. Send in your music story!Ever watch a stranger melt down in public and wonder what the right response should be? We start with a jaw-dropping Walmart story—complete with aisle-side outrage and a hero repeating “why are you mad?”—and turn it into a bigger conversation about empathy, language barriers, and how to keep your dignity when everything feels loud. No lectures, just honest debate about patience, translation apps, and the tiny choices that make life easier for everyone. From there, we jump into a home-repair misadventure that would make any new homeowner sweat: a contractor who shows up with painter's tape and no materials, a realtor with disappearing texts, and the case for clear communication. We talk tipping etiquette for delivery apps and why incentives matter, then shift gears into a moment of tenderness: Taylor's hand-drawn cardinal for her dad, honoring a loved one with art that blends craft and memory. And then it's pure joy. We pull up Spotify Wrapped confessions and rank the 10 songs everyone knows, singing along to the anthems that turn bars into choirs and cars into stages. From Sweet Caroline and Don't Stop Believin' to Mr. Brightside, Wannabe, All the Small Things, Hey Ya, Bohemian Rhapsody, and We Will Rock You, we argue, laugh, and admit which tracks make us want to rage or cry in the best way. It's nostalgia, karaoke energy, and the shared soundtrack that proves music still ties us together when words fail.Grab a zero-sugar boost made with coffee-based caffeine, check out our new merch, and hang with us for a ride that's messy, human, and weirdly uplifting. Mother Mary Comes to Me by Arundhati Roy. This is by the author of the Booker Prize winning The God of Small Things - about her life growing up in India, the forces that shaped her, and particularly her very difficult relationship with her mother, Mary, who is always referred to in the book as Mrs Roy. Mrs Roy was a formidable force of nature and in trying to make sense of the dynamic between them, and to find her own way in the world, Arundhati has written a deeply moving, entertaining and profound memoir. How to Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair. The author grew up in Jamaica where her father was a radical Rastafarian and was paranoid about keeping his daughters away from the secular world which they referred to as Babylon. Safiya's childhood was often brutal, peripatetic and poor but she had the soul of a poet and the dream to eventually become one. It's an extraordinary and deeply moving memoir – how one young woman eventually found the courage to stand up to her father and became the woman she never thought she could be. Anyone who read Educated and loved it will love this. The Breath of the Gods by Simon Winchester: A remarkable exploration of our atmosphere, and the role played in our lives by wind – which can be both benign and malevolent. It's a fascinating story told through history, literature, science, poetry and engineering – and includes a piece on our own Wahine disaster. Simon Winchester has an ability to make the everyday and apparently mundane, extraordinary. The Hollows Boys by Peta Carey. The story of the three Hollows brothers Gary, Mark and Kim, who were pivotal in the helicopter deer recovery era in Fjordland in the 1970s which was a dangerous and unregulated time. Gary Hollows died (as did many others) and the pain of that is still felt keenly today, more than 40 years on. The work they did against the backdrop of such a beautiful part of the country is jaw dropping, with high deer tallies helping keep that population down (and thereby protecting the environment), lots of money sloshing around and amazing stories of real derring do by a group of extraordinarily brave and reckless men who lived by their own rules. Mana by Tame Iti. The deeply personal account of the life of one of our greatest rebels and radicals who grew up being forbidden to speak te reo and became one of its biggest advocates (amongst many other causes). He's lived much of his life in the public eye, going from bad boy status to that of a national treasure and the journey is well documented in this beautiful and thoughtful book. It's a lovely production and includes lots of photographs, including some of his own artwork. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A perfectly executed song that utterly defines a genre — for good or ill — and a cover that takes a simple start and uses a lot of musical smarts to recontextualize it. All The Small Things, originally by Blink-182, covered by City Mouth. We've used this outro music before, but it's time to restore the ear worm. The Bumblebee Tuna song by Mephiskapheles.

The Constitution Study with Host Paul Engel – While we all have a lot to give thanks for, I think limiting it to one day a year deprives us all of something important. For example, many people today stop before their feast and list what they're thankful for: family, friends, a warm home, and a good meal. Have you taken the time to think of the small things we can be thankful for?

Gratitude often feels effortless when life is going well — when prayers are answered, when blessings are obvious, when joy overflows naturally. But for most of us, gratitude is forged not on the mountaintops, but in the rhythms of ordinary days. The days that feel repetitive. The days that feel quiet. The days when nothing "big" seems to be happening. Scripture calls us to “give thanks in all circumstances.” Not just in the exciting ones, but in the everyday ones — the soft glow of morning light, the warmth of a cup of coffee, the sound of laughter around the dinner table, the simple grace of making it through another day. Gratitude in these small, sacred places keeps our hearts aligned with God’s presence and shifts our eyes from what we lack to who He is. God’s goodness is not an occasional event; it is a continuous presence woven into the fabric of our daily lives. When we slow down enough to notice His fingerprints — a gentle breeze, a familiar verse speaking fresh truth, a moment of quiet peace — we begin to experience the miracle of everyday grace. Jesus Himself modeled this when He gave thanks for five loaves and two fish before the miracle. Gratitude prepared the way. In a world obsessed with “more,” the Kingdom teaches us to treasure “enough.” Gratitude invites joy into what feels simple. It transforms routine moments into holy ground. It reminds us that every breath is evidence of God’s kindness. If your life feels plain, small, or uneventful right now, take heart. God is in the small things too. Sometimes the quiet seasons are where He speaks the loudest. Today's Bible Reading:“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18 Takeaway Truths Gratitude is not based on circumstances but on God’s unchanging character. Small daily blessings reveal God’s ongoing presence and care. Thanksgiving trains our hearts toward contentment and joy. Jesus modeled gratitude even before His miracles unfolded. The ordinary moments of life can become sacred when we slow down and notice God. Let’s Pray Father, thank You for the small things — the quiet gifts I often overlook. Forgive me for rushing past Your goodness while waiting for something “bigger” to celebrate. Open my eyes to notice You in the daily moments — in laughter, in silence, in the simple routines of my life. Thank You for breath in my lungs, sunlight through my window, food on my table, and the people who love me. Thank You even for the inconveniences that remind me of the blessings behind them. Teach me to live with continual gratitude — not because everything is perfect, but because You are perfect and Your plans for me are good. Help me pause, notice, and whisper thank You throughout the ordinary moments. Let my life become a continual offering of thanksgiving to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen. A Prayer to Be Satisfied in the Small Things God often works through the small, simple, and unexpected—especially during seasons where our expectations run high, like Thanksgiving. In today's episode by Amanda Luedeke, we’re reminded that even the most modest acts of obedience can open the door to God’s miraculous provision. We contrast the idealized “perfect Thanksgiving” many of us imagine with the imperfect but beautiful memories that truly stay with us. Instead of striving for flawless moments, we’re invited to loosen our grip, adjust our expectations, and make room for God to meet us in the seemingly insignificant. Reference: 1 Kings 17:12–16 Prayer: My Jesus, You came to this world—quietly, meekly, yet beautifully—and You changed everything. I thank You and praise You for showing us that power isn’t found only in what is big and flashy. Help me to cling to this! Help me to focus on the importance of making space for that which is simple and seemingly insignificant. Guide me away from putting all my attention on the big efforts that impress and replace that desire with an ability to see Your work in the small things. In this episode, Buffy invites listeners into the power of the small. Consider this: how you complete the small tasks in your life can be a mirror for how you move through the big, life-shaping moments. What happens if you approach the small things with intention, presence, and care? She offers some practical ways to connect with small intentional moments throughout your day, and infuse more meaning and purpose into every moment. These practices are meant to support you in living a more conscious, steady, and balanced life, one small choice at a time.
The parable of the mustard seed reveals that God's kingdom grows through small, faithful actions rather than grand gestures. Just as the tiny mustard seed becomes a large tree over time, our spiritual lives are built through daily moments of obedience and trust. This principle applies to marriage, parenting, career, and faith - all are strengthened through consistent small steps. The key is taking ownership of what we can control, fostering growth through intentional effort, trusting God's timing, and embracing eternal purposes. Small beginnings with faithful tending can create extraordinary results that ultimately serve others and glorify God.

In this episode, we continue our series on the Garden of Our Hearts and talk about the cultivation of beauty. Beauty has the power to transform, heal, and lift us into communion with God, but it must be cultivated with care and intention. We discuss what it means to co-create with God, slow down and savor little moments, and rediscover beauty in the people closest to us. Even when the world around us feels barren or artificial, the Lord invites us to see beauty with new eyes and let the Holy Spirit reveal His presence in unexpected ways. Quotes to Ponder: "Every expression of true beauty can thus be acknowledged as a path leading to an encounter with the Lord Jesus." -Pope Francis "We must wonder! We must create an environment of wonder! We must create a climate of wonder! This task is closest to the family. . . . Wonder is needed so that beauty might enter into human life, into society and the nation. This beauty is the foundation and the creative moment of the culture. It is impossible to create culture by administrative means. These means can only destroy it. . . . We need to marvel at everything that is found in man." (Saint Pope John Paul II) Scripture for Lectio: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Most likely, if you asked many different people from all walks of life this question, then you would receive many different answers. But if we consider the context of this statement of Jesus, then it is clear that one of the primary small matters of which He speaks is our use of money. Many people live as though the attainment of wealth were of the highest importance. There are many who dream of becoming rich. Some regularly play the lottery in the very unlikely hope that they will hit it big. Others dedicate themselves to much hard work in their careers so that they can advance, make more money and, so they believe, become happier as they become wealthier. And others regularly daydream about what they would do if they were rich. But from the perspective of God, material wealth is a very small and unimportant matter. Money is useful insofar as it is one of the ordinary means by which we go about providing for ourselves and our families. But it truly is small in importance when it comes to the divine perspective. With that said, one way to be entrusted by Jesus with “great” matters is to use your money appropriately. We become “trustworthy” in this small matter of money when we only give it the value that it has. In other words, we must see money only as one means to the end of fulfilling God's perfect will. When we work to rid ourselves of excessive desires and dreams of riches, and when we use what we have in accord with God's will, then this act on our part will open the door to our Lord to entrust us with much more. What is that “much more?” It's the spiritual matters that pertain to our eternal salvation and the salvation of others. God wants to entrust to you the great responsibility of building His Kingdom on earth. He wants to use you to share His saving message with others. But He will first wait until you show yourself trustworthy in small matters, such as using your money well. And then, as you fulfill His will in these less important ways, you will begin to see Him call you to greater works. Reflect, today, upon the fact that God wants great things from you. The goal of all of our lives is to be used by God in incredible ways. If this is something you desire, then do every small act in your life with great care. Show many small acts of kindness. Try to be thoughtful of others. Put others' needs before your own. And commit yourself to using the money you have for God's glory and in accord with His will. As you do these small things, you will begin to be amazed at how God is able to begin entrusting you with more, and, through you, great things will happen that have eternal effects in your life and in the lives of others. My trustworthy Lord, You were entrusted with the greatest good ever known. Your Father in Heaven entrusted to You the salvation of the world. Please help me to share in this task by being faithful to Your holy will in every small way. As I seek to serve You in the small matters of life, I pray that I will be able to be used for even greater ones. My life is Yours, dear Lord. Use me as You will. Jesus, I trust in You. Zechariah 4:1–10. God gave Zechariah a vision to encourage a weary people rebuilding after exile. The lampstand and flowing oil revealed that revival doesn't come from human strength but through the unending supply of the Holy Spirit. The task wasn't to build by effort but to stay connected to the Source. Pastor Josh Kelsey shows us how this prophecy reminds us not to despise small beginnings. What looks like rubble to us, God sees as a finished temple. The mountain before us is no match for His Spirit, and the same grace that began the work will complete it.
