Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio; I'm your host, James Navé. Today, I'm thrilled to introduce an exceptional guest, Georgina Hayns, who has an extraordinary talent in puppetry and stop-action movies and is known for her work in Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio. Our paths crossed unexpectedly when Georgina, enjoying a vacation in Taos, encountered my friend Janet and me during our regular afternoon walk. What started as a chance meeting on a dirt road blossomed into an engaging discussion about art, travel, and the nuances of life. Georgina, alongside her friend and colleague Shannon, shared insights from their experiences as puppet designers based in Portland. Though their stay in Taos was brief, we had the pleasure of sharing meals and stories. An Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences member, Georgina continues to inspire and innovate in animated storytelling. Join us as we dive into the fascinating world of puppetry, creativity, and behind-the-scenes stories with Georgina Hayns on Twice 5 Miles Radio. Enjoy the show.
A wooden puppet comes to life. A cricket becomes a moral compass. There's also a whale. We pull the strings on Disney's Pinocchio (2022), Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022), and an unlikely third contender imported from Russia… Pinocchio: A True Story (2021). Our next episode will be the Hallmark Christmas movies Sister Swap: Hometown Holiday (2021) and Sister Swap: Christmas in the City (2021). So deck the halls, not once, but twice. This is the ninth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. It's summer in Moominvalley and this book truly hits the ground running. There's a volcano casually going off in the background, and another flood, and the Moomin family has to relocate to a strange floating house. Also, Snufkin is nowhere to be found and Moomintroll is pining away. We've got a bunch of cool new characters, some magical midsummer traditions, and a lot of theatrical superstitions. Dave is taking a new occasional rubrik out for a spin: it's the Clothes Corner!... Nina's usual Botany Corner is also here, and it's all about mosses and lichens. Our Spirits this week are Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, The Spellcoats by Diana Wynne Jones, and So I Got To Thinking, a Sex and the City podcast by Juno Dawson and Dylan B Jones.

Jodi, Bridget and Philip review the 2022 'Pinocchio' adaptation from renowned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and Netflix. Filmed using stop-motion puppetry, del Toro co-directs with Mark Gustafson a film that reflects the signature dark whimsy of del Toro's earlier films, unafraid to delve into heavy symbolism involving war and loss. The wartime setting is punctuated by numerous colorful characters and moments of strong levity, offering a familiar yet fresh take on the classic story. Pinocchio's journey through late-1930's Italy is full of twists and turns that leave you breathless. Discover how Pinocchio narrowly escapes peril in this life and beyond, seeking to somehow return to a place of peace and belonging alongside his cricket companion his father Gepetto. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio on Netflix is another huge hit for the streaming platform and for stop motion animation. Having won several awards in the early season as well as being critically acclaimed and highly engaged on the streaming platform the new rendition of the story seems to have resonated much higher in the zeitgeist than the bog standard Disney Reboot of their own landmark animated feature. Let's talk about what makes this new Pinocchio shine!

Happy first episode recorded in 2023! We'd love to tell you we're coming in all “new year, new us”, but f*ck that… that's not why you're here. You're not here to listen to us grow and change and all that nonsense. No way. How about “New year, worse us” (thanks, Lucas). Look, all I'm trying to say is that we hadn't recorded in a while and we had a lot of movies to catch up on and also tonight's movie, um… didn't bear us the longest fruit. So tune in for some wild and erratic opinions on things that mostly have to do with horror and stick around for a little puppet-y after party! With Adam and Josh facing a deadline for submitting their Chicago Film Critics Association best of the year ballots, they use this episode to hash out their picks for the best supporting and lead performances of the year—from heavy hitters like Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell, and Michelle Yeoh to the stars of lesser-seen films like “Aftersun,” “Causeway,” and “Decision to Leave.” Plus reviews of Guillermo del Toro's stop-motion PINOCCHIO adaption, and Sam Mendes' 80s-set ode to movies and movie theaters, EMPIRE OF LIGHT. Adam and Josh also weigh in on the recent publication of Sight & Sound's once-a-decade Greatest Films of All Time list. 0:56 - Best Performances of 2022 (Supporting) 33:33 - Sight & Sound's Greatest Films of All Time 55:44 - Review: “Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio” 1:06:19 - Review: “Empire of Light” 1:27:31 - Next Week / Notes / Massacre Theatre 1:35:15 - Best Performances of 2022 (Lead) 1:52:46 - Outro Learn more about your ad choices. Director Guillermo Del Toro has brought a new take on the classic tale of Pinocchio – the little wooden boy who goes on adventures and learns valuable life-lessons about the dangers of lying, laziness and disobedience. Unlike it's Disney predecessor, this new stop-motion animated film is more faithful to its source material. It's darker, weirder, more emotionally complex – and it's gorgeous to look at.
In this EPIC podcast, the Bancroft Bros celebrate Netflix's newest animated film, "Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio" by interviewing, not one, but FOUR team members- the directors, Guillermo Del Toro and Mark Gustafson first, and then Supervising animator Brian Leif Hansen and character fabricator Georgina Hayns! This is the podcast to listen to BEFORE you watch the BEST Pinocchio film since the OG from the 40s! Let's do this!
For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Sara Clements & Dan Bayer. Today we're reviewing Guillermo del Toro's latest film, "Pinocchio," (or titled "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio") starring Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, Christoph Waltz & Tilda Swinton. There have been many versions of this timeless story, but del Toro and co-director Mark Gustafson have taken the beloved wooden puppet and placed him in the world of stop-motion animation. What did we think of the characters, story, themes, animation, score, and more? Please tune in below to hear our thoughts and feelings on the film and its Oscar prospects.
