It's Awards Season yet again. Here on the Holmes Movies Podcast that means, it is time for the Alternative Oscars episodes! AKA the Anders and Adam-emy Awards! Each episode for this series we pick a different year in Oscars history and attempt to correct the record, stripping the undeserving of their garlands while recognising those who were cruelly overlooked. This time, we will be casting our eye back to… the 90th Academy Awards. The event celebrated all the films released in the year of 2017. The event was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 4th 2018. The host was Jimmy Kimmel. He had hosted the year before. The 90th Annual Academy Awards was a year after the La-La Land/Moonlight Best Picture fiasco. It was the year when Guillermo Del Toro's film The Shape Of Water won 4 Oscars, it was nominated for 13. Timothée Chalamet, at that point 22, was the third youngest person to nominated in an acting category. Greta Gerwig was nominated for Best Director for Lady Bird, the 5th female filmmaker to be nominated in that category. Jordan Peele was the first African American to win Best Original Screenplay. Rachel Morrison became the first woman nominated for Best Cinematography. It was the year of genre films. Slowly but surely, the Academy is slowly starting to acknowledge and award Oscars and nominations for horror films and other genre films of that ilk. We head back in our time machine to right the wrongs of this year. In our opinion, who should have won? Listen to the episode and find out who we think should have won. Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US and the UK. In Finland it was released on Apple TV after finishing its limited cinema run and was the Number 1 film for multiple weeks. You can read a review about it here on the Fangoria website. The film is now available to watch in the other Nordic territories like Sweden, Oslo and of course Denmark. If you live in Denmark, you can watch the movie here on Apple TV by clicking this link.Follow us on our Instagram page. For obvious reasons, we are no longer on Twitter. You won't find us there. Perhaps we will make a BlueSky account, so keep an eye out for that.Follow our Letterboxd page where you can see what we were recommending to each other over the course of the Covid-19 Pandemic.Check out our blog and read Anders's recent review on David Lynch's brilliant film Mulholland Drive. Well, we're into the penultimate episode of The War Between the Land and the Sea and, really, we're experiencing a bit of an uneven episode. The drama is there, things feel a little hopeless, so let's give the Sea Devils even more superpowers, give Barclay and Salt some really awkward dialogue, and let's make sure Kate Stewart never rests again. We are really hoping that they're able to stick the landing with the final episode, but we'll see!

This week, we're taking a swim in The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro's dark fairy tale that blends Cold War paranoia, creature-feature horror, and sweeping romance. We explore the film's lush visuals, haunting score, and the strange — yet tender — love story at its center. From beautiful effects to its themes of otherness and empathy, we unpack why this genre-bending fantasy resonated so deeply with audiences. Is it horror? Is it romance? Is it both? Join us as we have dip in the water and find out. This week we are joined by friend of the show, Anna! Hop on the SITC Submarine because we're plummeting into the watery, murky depths of interspecies sex. This deep blue beyond is where fish and fowl Neptune and chill. For this first journey beneath the waves, Torie is joined by Ziah Grace, Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin” 2025 nominee for Best Film Critic and misanthropic beach boy, to soak in Guillermo del Toro's 2018 Best Picture Oscar winner, THE SHAPE OF WATER. Prepare yourself for an hour of Siskel and Ebert-coded bickering over a mediocre movie. Highlights include Torie's monster fetish, Ziah's impassioned response to an unjust cat murder, a profusion of eggs and egg timers, Torie's abhorrence for men with long hair, squirting geysers, and Ziah's supreme vexation over the creature's phallic AF genitals (the fish dick). Despite some differences in opinions, both parties agree that Sally Hawkins's performance was one of Cinema's all-time best and that Guillermo del Toro robbed his audiences by refusing to give us explicit (yet romantic) fish f**king.

Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro talks to John Wilson about his cultural influences. From his 1992 debut Cronos to his recent big budget spectacular retelling of Frankenstein, del Toro's 12 feature films mix fantasy, horror and Gothic romance to create modern fairy tales about innocence, brutality and redemption. His movies have won eight Academy Awards including three for Pan's Labyrinth in 2006, and four Oscars for The Shape Of Water in 2017, plus seven BAFTAs and three Golden Globes.Producer: Edwina PitmanArchive used: Clip from Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro, 2006 Clip from Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro, 2025 Clip from Frankenstein, James Whale, 1931 Clip from I Confess, Alfred Hitchcock, 1953
In 1991, Nelson founded Sound Dogs, a studio that has since grown into Canada's premier sound editing, recording, and design company with hundreds of film and television titles to their credit. Nelson has worked with renowned directors such as Darren Aronofsky on Requiem for a Dream and Guillermo del Toro on The Shape of Water, which earned Nelson both Oscar and BAFTA nominations. Nelson's other film work includes: The Breadwinner, Dual, Priscilla, Nutcrackers, Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, and Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein.
Happy belated Thanksgiving! We're back! Today we're very excited to talk about Guillermo Del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN! Guillermo is a filmmaker we've admired for a long time, from Blade II to Pan's Labyrinth, from Pacific Rim to The Shape Of Water, his films are something truly special and have his unique signature all over them. Most of his films deal with monsters and their beauty within, and the hidden monster within power, so in many ways all of his films have led to the ultimate monster-movie: Frankenstein. It's an apotheosis of sorts, which further explores themes he has touched upon in other films, but... is it redundant? How does this film stack up to other Frankenstein adaptations? Always a great time to discuss this amazing artist's work! ...If only he had directed The Hobbit...• • •TRIAD Of The FORCE is a STAR WARS+ podcast hosted by Gus, Nani, & Chase—Puerto Rican and queer creators sharing deep dives, and heartfelt conversations from a galaxy far, far away. All good things must come to an end, Spookies, but we wanted to send Monster Fucker February off with a beautiful goodbye. That's why we decided to close out this month's theme by covering The Shape of Water (2017), Guillermo del Toro's semi-underwater romance inspired by 1954's Creature from the Black Lagoon. A gorgeous period piece and Oscar winner several times over, this flick isn't lacking in fashion or function, and we're talking about it all — from sexy egg connections to upsettingly relevant political parallels — on a new episode of Spooky Tuesday. One of us is prepared to insist that this Academy Award winning film is more than just “that fish-sex movie.” A little behind the scenes: in our recording schedule notes Mike keeps writing the title of this movie as “Shapes of Water”. For those of you who know him to be a fully-committed listman and self-professed admirer of Guillermo del Toro, this is shocking. This may is your first hint of his true feelings about this film. Films usually have a nice structure to it that makes us feel complete ... the movie has a beginning, a middle, and an ending that kind of wraps everything up neatly. And then there are a few that just don't do that. LOL! The Academy Award-winning film for Best Picture of 2014, Birdman, doesn't do thta. The film is as open-ended as can be. However, the film's technical aspects, the acting, and direction, are all brilliant. This film is very unique ... and was praised by critics and movie goers everywhere. But all these years later, Does Birdman still hold up? In hindsight, should it still be regarded as the best of 2014?Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about Birdman, as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 2014.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSkyShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.com or jackferdman@gmail.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating. Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water feels eerily relevant as we brace for a second Trump presidency. Set in a Cold War-era America steeped in paranoia, oppression, and cruelty, the film critiques the illusion of “greatness” that MAGA rhetoric glorifies. Through characters like Elisa, Giles, Zelda, and the Amphibian Man—people existing on society's margins—it celebrates empathy, connection, and resistance against authoritarianism.
It's finally here! Behold our Season 5 finale episode, which, in true Watch With Jen form is a group chat extravaganza celebrating the best new physical media releases in recent months. In this feature-length compilation, you'll hear thoughtful, articulate, occasionally personally revealing, funny, & fresh spins on NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (with novelist S.A. Cosby), Scarface - 1932 (with critic Sean Burns), THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY & GALAXY QUEST (with novelist Jed Ayres), myself on PAPER MOON, PULP FICTION, & THE SHAPE OF WATER, & A SIMPLE PLAN & PARIS, TEXAS (with novelist William Boyle). Afterward, I've included a special bonus section featuring the official Watch With Jen introduction to the film WHITE PALACE that was recorded live at the American Cinematheque in August of '24 with myself, Kate Hagen, & words by Amy Robinson. I'd dub it an Easter Egg but given the date, let's call it a Holiday Present instead. With Halloween around the corner, Ali & Cev foolishly offered Smokey a chance to talk about a horror film and he brought along the Kevin Smith romantic comedy "TUSK" (2014) instead."He's living the rest of his ife as a fucking walrus with a floating beach ball""He's actually crossing his legs and kicking his left leg. It's the final episode of the October theme of podcast episodes and while I move a little bit away from horror, we're talking about one of the most beautiful movies created in Guillermo del Toro's magnum opus The Shape of Water. Most of our choices so far in this year's Scary Movie Month haven't been all that goosebump-inducing. Creature From The Black Lagoon isn't very frightening either, but Jack Arnold's film WAS influential, especially on Guillermo Del Toro and his Oscar-winning The Shape Of Water. The Gill Man in this 1954 Universal Monster flick might look corny now in his creature suit, but the underwater shots the crew got and the stunts they all did down there remain impressive. The most-famous scene is, of course, when the creature yearns for Julie/a Adams as she swims on the surface. Ah, the loneliness of the outcast. But while the title character is violent, you could also say that he's provoked. There's a lot of "bad guy" blame to go around...to Gill AND to the Richards, Carlson & Denning. So set sail on the Rita with our 618th podcast in your ears as we discuss the soggy doings in Creature From The Black Lagoon. Well, Actually: the pronunciation of Ricou Browning DOES seem to be "Rico". Also, the 1975 and 2005 King Kong films should have been called "remakes", not "sequels". Also also, Arthur Ross wrote "The Creature WALKS Among Us", not "The Creature Among Us". Check out Sparkplug Coffee and use our "HYES" promo code to get a onetime 20% discount. Editor - Cam McLauchlin MEGALOPOLIS editor Cam McLauchlin had no idea what was waiting for him on the other side when he knocked on Francis Ford Coppola's door. Now that Coppola's decades-in-the-making passion project has become a "surreality", McLauchlin still can't quite explain everything that took place in the making of this film. One thing is clear to Cam however, this was Francis's vision and Francis IS "Cesar Catalina". MEGALOPOLIS takes place in a somewhat alternate universe, where New York City is New Rome, and stars Adam Driver as Caesar Catalina, a brilliant artist, who somehow has the ability to stop time and has developed a magical substance called MEGALON that can be used to build a utopian city of the future. Caesar is at odds with the greedy mayor of New Rome, Franklyn Cicero. Between them is his daughter Julia Cicero, her loyalty divided between her father and her beloved. CAM McLAUCHLIN As a film & television editor based out of Toronto and Los Angeles, Cam's career began in Toronto working as an assistant editor for Guillermo Del Toro on PACIFIC RIM, THE STRAIN, CRIMSON PEAK and eventually as an associate editor on SHAPE OF WATER. Cam also edited the horror cult classic, THE VOID with alumni from Canadian film production and directing company, Astron-6. Other selected work includes; Max Minghella's feature debut musical, TEEN SPIRIT and Dogme 95 member, Lone Schefrig's KINDNESS OF STRANGERS. Cam is currently doing an extended cut on NIGHTMARE ALLEY with director Guillermo Del Toro. The Dames go deep (hehe) on Guillermo del Toro's glorious magical realist fable (and Best Picture winner) The Shape of Water, and its deceptively simple narrative that combines fairy tale, biblical allegory, and transcendental love into something that is truly unique. Is this just the "fish-fucking movie" or is it so much more? Next week, we'll be discussing Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit, so get ready for that!
