Serving the Score and the Savior: Sean Kisch's Hollywood CallingWhen Sean Kisch moved to Los Angeles, he wasn't chasing the spotlight — he was answering a call to serve.Sean works as a music copyist at JoAnn Kane Music Service, one of the top music preparation firms in the film industry. If you've seen a big-budget film in the last decade, there's a good chance JoAnn Kane had a hand in it — and Sean might have too.So, what exactly does a music copyist do? “I get asked that a lot,” Sean laughed during a recent episode of the Cedarville Stories podcast. “My job is to serve composers so they can serve the picture.” That means prepping sheet music, formatting parts for musicians, and making sure every note is ready for recording sessions — sometimes with just hours to spare. It's high-pressure work, but also high-impact. Sean has worked on films like The Minecraft Movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Avatar: The Way of Water, collaborating with legendary composers like John Williams and Alan Silvestri. For a lifelong music-lover, working with his heroes is still a little surreal. But for Sean, Hollywood isn't just about career milestones — it's about calling. In a city where many arrive hoping to build a platform and chase personal success, Sean is focused on something different. His goal is to serve — his colleagues, his community, and ultimately Christ.Sean graduated from Cedarville University in 2017, and his time there helped shape his mindset. There, he not only developed his musical skills but also deepened his understanding of how faith and vocation intersect. The University's focus on excellence and biblical integration gave him the tools to pursue his craft with purpose. Those values now guide his work in every studio session and industry interaction. In LA, Sean is part of a strong community of believers quietly making a difference in the entertainment industry. He attends Reality LA, a solidly biblical church, and supports local ministries working to share the light of Christ.“There's more light in Hollywood than people think,” Sean said. “God is doing amazing things here.”Even in an industry known for glamor and competition, Sean sees Hollywood as a mission field. He continues to invest in the city and its people — through his church, his work, and his quiet, faithful presence behind the scenes.https://share.transistor.fm/s/79806ac9https://youtu.be/mhv6gEc2ohs

It's been a long, hot summer, but we're back just in time for Christmas in July! We've been playing the heck out of Nintendo's new Donkey Kong Bananza game, so we thought we'd take a look at the Christmas episode of the Donkey Kong Country TV series! "The Kongo Bongo Festival of Lights" has everything you could want out of a holiday-themed cartoon episode: A holiday-themed light display, a wacky O. Henry-esque gift-giving mishap, two warring factions coming together in the name of peace, and even a festive song or two! So yes, we're talking all about Donkey Kong this episode. The first half of this episode covers the Donkey Kong TV show (and also Avatar: The Way of Water, for some reason). The second half is when we pull the ripcord and just gush about Donkey Kong Bananza. Strap yourselves in, kiddos! Questions/Comments? James Cameron is back to deliver the goods! The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash debuted with The Fantastic Four: First Steps last week and now, the trailer is finally online. I started off as the world's biggest Avatar hater. I loved James Cameron's films and was appalled by his decision to spend DECADES of his career making movies in Pandora as opposed to returning to making a variety of all-time classics. No joke, I think True Lies is one of the greatest comedies of all-time. But, on a fateful day in September 2022… everything changed. I saw the first movie in theaters for the first time, in 3D of course, and I fell in love. And then a couple months later, I ended up loving Avatar: The Way of Water even more. Then I saw that movie two more times in theaters. I have become the world's biggest Avatar stan and this is now my most anticipated movie for the rest of the year. Cameron and his team have a lot to live up to, following two Best Picture nominated films and quite literally two of the biggest movies of all-time. So, does this trailer deliver? Find out in my initial reaction episode to the trailer!
We're travelling to Pandora to fix the sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time. Oh, and the bad sequel? It's the third-highest-grossing film of all time! And what even is "The Way of Water" anyway?! You'll have to tune in and find out! The 2008 Best Picture line up had some heavy hitters that are still on people's lists of their favorite movies of all time. So when we saw a legal thriller smack dab in the middle of the stacked season, we were skeptical. However, Tony Gilroy's tight script and directorial debut, Michael Clayton, had us on the edge of our seats from the moment Tom Wilkinson's voice over started until we sat in disbelief in the back of the cab with George Clooney. This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!
This week, we're breaking our hiatus to break from our format, as we are not breaking down a film this week so much as hyping one up, as we get ready for the movie event of the summer by over-analyzing the final trailer for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. If you're a long-time listener or even someone who's only heard a few episodes you probably know that the Mission: Impossible movies are a permanent hyper-fixation around here, so we had to get together to discuss a preview loaded wall-to-wall with That Guy character actors, including the return of our beloved boy Shea Whigham, and even that one guy from the first movie who had to go have diarrhea. Everyone is here! Plus: J Mo's got a theatrical field report having been out to the VIFF premiere of the pro wrestling biopic Queen of the Ring that included a live Q&A with the film's director and star, and as usual we catch up on what's been filling our Letterboxd. Other works discussed on this episode include Kimi, Rushmore, The Accountant, The Pitt, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avatar: The Way of Water, Aquaman, Campfire Tales, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, The Twister: Caught in the Storm, Twisters, Tenet, Deja Vu, The Iron Claw, Flow, The Wild Robot, Rope, Stranger Than Fiction and Terminator: Salvation. Not sure when we'll back together again, but we can say when we do we will be discussing Warren Beatty's 1990 comic book detective noir Dick Tracy, a movie that is literally never available to stream and may never be despite being produced and distributed by Disney. We've also got while-they're-in-theatres episodes planned over the next month for both The Accountant 2 and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, so look forward to those, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Avatar: The Way of Water is a triumphant return to Pandora that expands the universe James Cameron so vividly brought to life in 2009 and deepens its emotional resonance. This sequel is a testament to Cameron's ability to blend cutting-edge technology with timeless storytelling.
Before he tried to drown actors in Avatar: The Way of Water, before he even thought about drowning anyone on Titanic, James Cameron tried to drown Ed Harris while making 1989's The Abyss. Kevin and Lauren are back this week with reviews of Transformers One, Twisters, Rebel Ridge, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Mother of the Bride. Lauren kicks off the show with a trip to the theater to see Twisters. It's not really a remake or a sequel, but it is about Glenn Powell, Daisy Edgar Jones, and Anthony Ramos chasing tornadoes, so it's not a bad thing! Overall it's a great summer watch with an engaging story and, of course the acting is solid. Give it a watch! Next up, Kevin takes us to his old familiar haunt at Netflix. Rebel Ridge, starring Aaron Pierre just dropped a few days ago and it's a great action flick. Pierre is a star on the rise after this one. The action is solid and displays a very unique "no kill" rule. The bits between that action are filled with excellent drama and this one is worth the time, for sure. We hop in our wayback machine next (ok, not that FAR back), as Lauren gives her review of Avatar: The Way of Water. In the best of ways, this is more of the same from the Avatar universe. the story is compelling, the acting is great, and the visuals are incredible. This one can currently ne found on Disney Plus. In a rare occurrence, Kevin had the opportunity to sneak peak a movie before it was released. He and his boys got ticket to Transformers One and this might just be the best Transformers film to date. The OG may win for nostalgia purposes, but this is an excellent story about the friendship and falling out of the two mining robots who would become Optimus Prime and Megatron. While this story is more told from Orion Pax's point of view, they standout character progression is the story of the breakdown of D16 to Megatron. Get your tickets now and see it opening weekend! In what might be one of the funniest reviews in a very long time, Lauren discusses Mother of the Bride on Netflix. This review may cost us the Netflix sponsorship we were never going to get. Lauren absolutely did not enjoy this film and you can feel it the whole review and it's so much fun! The review... not the movie. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture
On this week's show, the hosts revisit Beetlejuice (1988), the seminal film that marked Tim Burton's arrival onto the scene as a sort of grim fairy tale teller. 36 years later, the director and much of the original cast return for its sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a surprisingly sincere tale about the nature of death and grieving. Or, is it a total mess? The hosts discuss. Then, the three dive into English Teacher, a hilarious new FX series in which Brian Jordan Alvarez (previously known for online comedies like The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo) plays Evan Marquez, a high school English teacher in Austin, Texas. Finally, chat podcasts (like the one you're listening to right now) are like dating and improv – to work, they necessitate a certain level of chemistry, intimacy, and vulnerability. The hosts are joined by New York Times culture critic Reggie Ugwu to discuss his recent piece, “What Makes Good Chemistry? For Chat Podcasts, It's Fundamental,” as well as the Gabfest's early days, the hosts first impressions of one another, and how they went about building their own unique rapport. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, Julia joins last week's productivity discourse and widens its scope, and the hosts discuss the nature of “hacking life” and how our relationship to productivity reflects current American ideals. The X film series consists of American horror films based on an original story written by Ti West. The series includes the original film X, its prequel Pearl (both 2022), and its sequel MaXXXine (2024). The overall plot of the movies centers on two characters, Maxine "Max" Minx and Pearl, both portrayed by Mia Goth. The first film, X, was met with critical acclaim,[1] and was a success at the box office. A tribute to slasher films of the past, the picture was deemed a horror film classic and impactful, anticipating its influence on the future of the genre.[2][3][4][5][6] Its prequel, Pearl, was also critically acclaimed, with some stating that it inadvertently improved the premise of the previous installment, and was also a success at the box office.[7][8] The third film, MaXXXine, was released on July 5, 2024.[9] It received generally favorable reviews from critics and became the highest grossing film in the series.[10] Pearl (subtitled An X-traordinary Origin Story) is a 2022 American psychological horror film directed, produced, and edited by Ti West, and co-written by West and Mia Goth. It is the second installment in West's X film series and a prequel to X (2022). Goth reprises her role as the title character, with a supporting cast featuring David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro. Pearl serves as an origin story for the title villain, whose fervent aspiration to become a movie star led to her committing violent acts on her family's Texas homestead in 1918. West began co-writing a prequel script stemming from his collaboration with Goth while filming X. Motivated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema, filming started in New Zealand immediately after the first film, using X sets and the Avatar: The Way of Water crew and taking pandemic safety precautions. Pearl drew inspiration from the works of Douglas Sirk, Technicolor films like The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Mary Poppins (1964), and Disney films. It had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2022, and was released in theaters in the United States on September 16, 2022, by A24. The film grossed over $10 million and received positive reviews from critics, with Goth's performance receiving considerable praise. A direct sequel to X, titled MaXXXine, was released on July 5, 2024, with Goth reprising her second role from the first film. MaXXXine is a 2024 American horror film written, directed, produced, and edited by Ti West. It is the third installment in West's X film series following X and Pearl (both 2022), serving as a direct sequel to the former. Mia Goth reprises her X role as Maxine Minx, starring alongside Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon. In the film, Maxine sets out for fame and success in 1980s Hollywood while being targeted by a mysterious killer. MaXXXine had its premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on June 24, 2024, and was released in the United States by A24 on July 5, 2024. The film grossed $21 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of the series.

What is it with Cirque du Soleil and Vegas? Ever since Steve Wynn invited Mystere to set up shop at Treasure Island in 1993, the French-Canadian circus brand that has made absurdity its trademark has become an inextricable part of Vegas entertainment. As of this writing, there are 5 Cirque du Soleil shows that call Vegas home (6, if you count the Cirque-owned, but not Cirque-developed, Blue Man Group) and there have been a total of 11 Cirque shows that have had permanent runs in Las Vegas. Some of them had shorter runs than others... Come aboard, we're expecting you... Kà was the fourth Cirque du Soleil show developed for the Las Vegas market, and it has the distinction of being the first Cirque show to tell a cohesive narrative. If you've never seen a Cirque du Soleil show: most Cirque shows have a theme but not a narrative. Mad Apple is themed after New York City. “O” is themed after water. I've read that Mystere is themed after “the origins of human life and our connection with the universe,” so you know, someone smoked a lot of weed. The story is fairly simple, but I do think people need to know the basics of it before they see the show. Compared to the current iteration of Awakening (which now practically serves up the entire story to the audience on a silver platter) Kà's narrative works best if you know the story notes going in. A twin brother and sister are part of a tribe that gets attacked by bad guys. The twins are separated and most find their way back together and also save their people. Each twin kind of goes through their own rite of passage on their journey before they are reunited and save their people. The massive sandcliff deck. Let's talk about the tech behind Kà. Kà is an absolute technological marvel. It doesn't have a proper stage floor, it just has an open pit that is full of various nets and airbags for the performers. Instead, there are two moving stages that are so massive and heavy that Cirque had to go outside of the theater industry and turned to Timberland Equipment, a company that normally builds mining equipment, to build their moving support structures. In one scene, one of the moving platforms is covered with 350 cubic feet of “granular cork” imported from Portugal to simulate sand on a beach. At one point in the show, the larger sandcliff deck has these pegs that stick out of it. As they are supposed to look like arrows shot onto the surface, they pop out of the deck very fast. But the performers have to climb using these pegs, so there are dual safety features incorporated into the pegs. First, they won't shoot out if anything is blocking them, and second, they won't go back in if there's any kind of weight on them. I could go on and on. Kà has won awards for its technical achievements in theater. I even read somewhere that it was the most expensive theatrical production ever made, but I couldn't corroborate that anywhere. This machine makes french fries 3 different ways! Of course, all the technology in the world doesn't necessarily give you an entertaining experience (Take notes, Avatar: The Way of Water). I'm happy to report that Kà is indeed an extremely entertaining experience, and one of the Cirque shows that I have enjoyed the most. I'm always looking for a narrative, so the fact that this show has one helps that enjoyment immensely. That being said, I recommend buying a program or at least reading through the show's wikipedia page so that you can get a basic understanding of the story beats and recognize what's happening. Like any well-told story, the show does a good job of varying the pace. There are intense action sequences and there are peaceful pas de deux. You have, of course, your typical array of Cirque acrobatics, some of which even takes place in the wings on either side of the stage. I recommend you arrive for your seats about 20 minutes early, as there is some pre-show action to enjoy. I really enjoyed the final battle, in which the sandcliff deck is positioned vertically. The performers, suspended from the ceiling, move up and down the face of the sandcliff deck, and it gives the illusion that you are watching the battle from above, like a top-down video game. You'll never guess who farted in the Wheel of Death. Like many Cirgue shows, you don't want to sit too close. We sat in the center. There's a walkway that runs through the theater separating the front sections from the rear sections, and we sat in the second row back from the walkway, and our views were perfect. Each seat is very comfortable and has its own pair of speakers for excellent sound. No outside food is allowed, but drinks can be purchased or brought in if transferred to disposable cups which are available. Audience fuckery is pretty minimal. No one is pulled up onstage, but a performer did hiss at us from the half-wall in front of our section before the show. We got a laugh out of it. There are two shows five nights a week (Saturday through Wednesday). Tickets start as low as $74.
