On this episode, we talk about the next installment in James Cameron's Avatar series with Avatar The Way of Water. We talk about the pros and cons between the first and second movie, the production behind Way of Water, the new characters, and much more!
You poor fools - imagine thinking that The Film Scorer was actually on hiatus? Far, far from the truth. Ending the fifteen second break I took after interviewing Daniel Lopatin is Simon Franglen! For those that don't know, Simon is fresh off of scoring Avatar: Fire and Ash, having already scored Avatar: The Way of Water and working with longtime collaborator James Horner on the first film. This is a much less tangential interview than normal, with essentially our whole focus revolving around Avatar: creating and expanding the palette, the scope and breadth of themes, his prior work with James Horner and carrying a core team through all three films, and, above all, making sure the boss (Jim Cameron) is happy. Simon's score for Avatar: Fire and Ash and the rest of his music is available on all major platforms. Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently in theaters, and if we're lucky there might be a few more Avatar films on the way some day. You can find out more about Simon on his website.
It took James Cameron 12 years to get another epic film to the big screen from 1997 to 2009, but when he did, it was literally the highest grossing movie of all time with Avatar! Now, we venture to Pandora in preparation for the new film Avatar: Fire and Ash. Did the 2009 original hold up all these years later? Come back next episode for the 2022 follow-up, Avatar: The Way of Water!

In our third visit to Pandora hosts James and Miles explore Avatar: Fire and Ash. This time the Sully family wrestles with the loss of their oldest son while running from the reincarnate Colonel Quaritch who has teamed up with a rival Navi clan known as the fire people. It's refreshing to see a blockbuster movie that encourages people to have faith rather than depend on their own materialistic understanding to get through life. Our heroes must face their own internal struggles while even our antagonists are called to repent and turn to their god. "We try to answer two questions before we say yes to a job or embark on a spec script: Why does the protagonist need this movie? And the other is: Why tell this story other than to make money? That was our attitude going into Jurassic World. That was our attitude going into Avatar," says screenwriter Rick Jaffa about how he and his writing partner Amanda Silver approach tackling a large film franchise. On today's podcast, we sit down with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver to discuss their blockbuster new film Avatar: Fire and Ash, the follow up to 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water. Husband and wife, the accomplished duo have also written and produced some of the biggest and most lucrative movies in Hollywood history, including the Planet of the Apes trilogy and Jurassic World. They generously share their techniques for worldbuilding, including doing tons of research to help keep the world grounded in science and fact, and always starting with character. They also share their mind-bending pitch for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. "What we said was, we want to take an ape from Pinocchio to Moses," says Jaffa. Silver adds, "Pinocchio meaning, I want to be a real boy – to Moses – and leading his people to the Promised Land. And that was basically the pitch." They also describe creating the exciting new Avatar character Varang (Oona Chaplin), of the Ash People and how she magically came to life on the page. "At first, when you don't know this character at all, and it's just a piece on a playing board to move around for your plot, you're trying to figure things out. But soon they hopefully start speaking for themselves… And then once we started writing her, we got through the first scene with her, we looked at each other and said, 'My God, the world's going to fall in love with this character!'" says Silver. So here's a wild week: one host nearly dies from kidney stones while the other rediscovers that teaching online is actually better than in-person classes. Sam and Jeff start by hilariously "canceling" loyal listener Margaret O'Brien for the ultimate betrayal, mentioning a rival podcast in her Christmas card. (She's now officially "Maga Margaret Minaj.")The conversation takes a dark turn when one host recounts waking up at 3 AM in excruciating pain, rushing to the emergency room where a PA literally punched his kidneys for diagnosis. The uric acid stone, caused by genetic factors and too much red meat and alcohol, led to uncontrollable vomiting and significant weight loss. After an awkward encounter with a nurse named Jezebel over fluorescent orange urine, he's now waiting to see a urologist while still carrying the stone around inside him.Between medical trauma and Real Housewives drama, the hosts also discuss a Peruvian festival where people legally fight to settle grievances, their shrinking "mortal enemy list" since leaving UB, and why "girls' gays" support women's rights more than regular "gays." They watched Avatar: The Way of Water in uncomfortable IMAX seats, abandoned a terrible football thriller after an hour, and somehow ended up watching a Madea Christmas movie at midnight.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is a 2025 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a story the trio wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Distributed by 20th Century Studios and produced by Lightstorm Entertainment, it is the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and the third installment in the Avatar franchise. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet reprise their roles from the previous films.Cameron, who had stated in mid-2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar (2009) if it was successful, announced the first two sequels in early 2010 following the success of the first film, with the then-untitled Avatar 3 aiming for a December 2015 release. However, the addition of two more sequels (four in total), and the development of new technology required to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects. Avatar: Fire and Ash started shooting simultaneously with The Way of Water in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming completed in late December 2020, after over three years of shooting. With an estimated budget of over $400 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. The film is dedicated to editor John Refoua, who died in 2023, and producer Jon Landau, who died in 2024.Avatar: Fire and Ash had its world premiere at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, on December 1, 2025, and was released theatrically in the United States on December 19, and has grossed $347.3 million. Critics praised the visuals, characters, performances, and action sequences, though many were divided on the plot, screenplay, and runtime.[b] Two additional sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are in various stages of production and are scheduled to be released in 2029 and 2031, respectively.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Over the past 15 years, Cameron's "Avatar" series has built a vast and devoted audience in China. Three years after "Avatar: The Way of Water", Cameron is back with his longest-ever work. Audiences are once again stepping into Pandora, this time, to experience something new, something deeper. Why does the Avatar story continue to resonate across cultures and generations?
James Cameron has returned to take us on a third trip to Pandora. Avatar: Fire and Ash is now out in cinemas worldwide and I finally, FINALLY had the chance to see the film yesterday after a long week of packing and traveling. This has easily been one of my most anticipated films of the year and pretty easily so because back in September 2022, I fell in love with this franchise. Finally having the chance to see the first Avatar in cinemas during its theatrical release-release was a game-changing cinematic experience for me and completely changed my perspective on a film that I felt very lukewarm to before that point. And then in December, Avatar: The Way of Water became a smash box office hit and, as far as I'm concerned, surpassed the first film by almost every single measure of quality. So, is the magic and awe of Pandora still alive? Is Avatar: Fire and Ash the best film in the trilogy? Find out all the answers in this review!Avatar: Fire and Ash:Directed by: James CameronScreenplay by: James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda SilverStory by: James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, Shane SalernoBased on charaacters created by: James CameronProduced by: Jon Landau, James CameronExeucutive Producers: Richard Baneham, Rae Sanchini, Peter M. Jake's family must fight for their survival and the future of Pandora in a conflict that pushes them to their emotional and physical limits.
Earth's Mightiest Critics re-ignite the age-old debate: Do people actually care about Avatar?Following the death of their eldest son, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) find themselves caring for Spider (Jake Champion), the human son of evil-military-leader-turned-evil-Na'vi-warrior Myles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). Meanwhile, Quaritch discovers the volcano-dwelling Ash tribe, headed by Varang (Oona Chaplin), whose obsession with war and the dark arts gives a chilling edge to the invading military's deadly artillery. And there's a bunch of other semi-interesting stuff that's hastily abandoned for the hour-plus Act Three death-and-destruction montage...In this spoilerific roundtable review of the third film in James Cameron's bafflingly successful trilogy, Fire and Ash, the gang digs into why the (arguably) best and (arguably) final entry may be the strongest, and why that may not be enough to save it from a legacy of, "Hey, remember those big blue alien movies?"Also, the EMC talks about Cameron's bizarre Anti-AI public service announcement they saw ahead of the early-December press screening.Support Kicking the Seat on Patreon, subscribe to us on YouTube, and follow us at:XLetterboxInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) trailer. And catch up with our previous review of 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water.Support all of Earth's Mightiest Critics at their various outlets:Keep up with Jeff York's criticism and caricatures at The Establishing Shot and Pipeline Artists.Check out Mark "The Movie Man" Krawczyk's The Spoiler Room Podcast.Get seated with The Blonde in Front!Follow David Fowlie's film criticism at Keeping It Reel.Get educated with Don Shanahan at Every Movie Has a Lesson…...And Film Obsessive...and the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast.Keep up with Annie Banks at The Mary Sue....and We Got This Covered.Make Nice with Mike Crowley of You'll Probably Agree. And save your celluloid soul with Dave Canfield's Substack, "Creature Feature Preacher".

This Day in Legal History: Project Blue Book EndsOn this day in legal history, December 17, 1969, the U.S. Air Force officially terminated Project Blue Book, its two-decade-long investigation into unidentified flying objects (UFOs). Launched in 1952 during a peak in UFO sightings and Cold War anxiety, Project Blue Book reviewed over 12,000 reports of aerial phenomena. The Air Force concluded that most sightings could be explained by natural phenomena, aircraft, or hoaxes, and found no evidence of extraterrestrial activity or threats to national security. With its closure, the government effectively stepped back from public-facing UFO investigations, although some believe military interest continued behind closed doors.Legally, the end of Project Blue Book catalyzed decades of litigation and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, as citizens, journalists, and researchers sought access to government-held UFO data. The skeptical legal view has often emphasized that classified information typically relates to military technology or surveillance programs, not alien spacecraft. Despite popular culture's fixation on extraterrestrials, courts have routinely deferred to executive branch claims of national security in resisting full transparency. While the project's conclusion did not trigger direct legislation, it helped shape a legal culture around government secrecy, classification standards, and the public's right to know. It also fueled persistent legal tension between conspiratorial narratives and evidentiary standards. As UFOs—now reframed as “unidentified anomalous phenomena” (UAPs)—have resurfaced in congressional hearings in recent years, Blue Book remains a touchstone for the limits of disclosure and the enduring gap between public curiosity and provable claims.Skepticism remains warranted: decades later, no clear evidence has emerged to support the claim of extraterrestrial contact—despite tens of thousands of pages released and re-litigated under FOIA.U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston expressed openness to again striking down a Trump policy that allows for the rapid deportation of migrants to third countries without meaningful notice or an opportunity to raise fears of persecution or torture. The case challenges Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policies that permit deportation to countries other than a migrant's country of origin, often with as little as six hours' notice. Judge Murphy had previously issued an injunction in April to halt such deportations, arguing they violated due process, but the Supreme Court paused that order in June via its “shadow docket” without providing detailed reasoning.Despite acknowledging the likely involvement of the Supreme Court again, Murphy indicated that he may still rule on the merits of the case, though any decision would likely be temporarily stayed. The lawsuit, a class action, targets a DHS memo from March and guidance from July that permits deportations based on “credible” diplomatic assurances. Plaintiffs argue these policies fall short of constitutional protections, while the Justice Department insists migrants already have opportunities to raise objections during proceedings. The judge criticized the lack of clarity from the Supreme Court's earlier intervention and emphasized the importance of due process in removal proceedings.US judge open to again striking down Trump policy on third-country deportations | ReutersA Trump-appointed federal appeals court judge has argued that constitutional rights do not extend to immigrants who entered the United States unlawfully, a position he laid out in a partial dissent in a Second Amendment case. Sixth Circuit Judge Amul Thapar agreed with upholding a federal ban on firearm possession by undocumented immigrants but rejected the majority's reasoning. Instead, he argued the case should have been resolved by declaring that only U.S. citizens are included in “the people” protected by the Constitution. Thapar relied heavily on the Constitution's preamble and an originalist reading of history, asserting that the Founders never intended constitutional protections to apply to non-citizens, especially those unlawfully present. The majority opinion rejected that framing, pointing to Supreme Court precedent recognizing that non-citizens who develop substantial connections to the country may invoke constitutional rights. Thapar went further, suggesting that even the First and Fourth Amendments were not originally meant to protect non-citizens. The case arose from a challenge by a Guatemalan national convicted of unlawfully possessing firearms, but Thapar's reasoning reached far beyond gun regulation. His dissent echoes arguments long advanced by the Trump administration and aligns with his status as a former Trump Supreme Court shortlist candidate. From my perspective, this is a racist, xenophobic, and profoundly ahistorical take that threatens to usher in a shameful new era of American jurisprudence. It reflects either a fundamental misunderstanding of constitutional law or a wanton, careerist obsequiousness to Trumpism, delivered with the unmistakable tone of someone auditioning for a Supreme Court seat while extolling the flavor of boot. Judge Thapar is an embarrassment to the bench.Judge Thapar's theory represents a fundamental shift away from the traditional understanding of constitutional rights as inherent and inalienable—that is, rights present in every individual that the government is bound to respect, not rights it doles out at its discretion. By asserting that non-citizens, especially those here unlawfully, are not part of “the people” and therefore not entitled to constitutional protections, Thapar effectively treats these rights as government-bestowed privileges rather than limits on state power–that should frighten citizens, as well. But if rights are inherent, as our legal tradition holds, and yet non-citizens don't possess them, the implication is clear: they are being denied not because of legal status, but because of a presumed inferiority. That's not a theory of constitutional law—it's a supremacist framework gussied up in originalist language.Trump-appointed judge argues US Constitution's rights do not extend to non-citizens | Reuters3-D animator Eric Ryder filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in California federal court against Disney and director James Cameron, alleging that the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water copied substantial elements from his science fiction story KRZ. Ryder claims he collaborated with Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment in the late 1990s on developing a film based on KRZ, and that key features of Avatar 2—including anthropomorphic beings, a vast oceanic world, and an exploitative Earth corporation mining a moon called Europa—mirror those from his work.Ryder previously sued over the first Avatar film in 2011, but that case was dismissed when a California state court ruled Cameron had created Avatar before Ryder submitted his material. Ryder insists this new case is not an attempt to relitigate the past, but rather to address new alleged acts of copying specific to The Way of Water, such as the central plot point involving an animal-based substance that extends human life, which he says did not appear in the original Avatar.Ryder is seeking at least $500 million in damages and a court order to block the release of the upcoming Avatar 3: Fire and Ash. His lawyer described the alleged copying as “blatant and egregious.” Disney and Lightstorm have not yet commented publicly on the lawsuit.Disney, James Cameron sued for copyright infringement over ‘Avatar' | Reuters This is a public episode. Events where fatalities are reported are considered simulated magic shows.### Predictive Programming and the Meta Script* The "meta script" is the pre-written script containing fake future events that are grafted onto the historic timeline.* Evidence suggests the script for events like the Charlie Kirk shooting was planned decades ago.* Trump-esque characters in numerous movies (e.g., *Back to the Future*'s Biff Tannen, *Machete*'s Senator McLaughlin) consistently contain common denominators, specifically 9/11 references and assassination attempts, illustrating long-term predictive programming.* Filmmakers like James Cameron are identified as being connected to predictive programming, exemplified by *Avatar: The Way of Water* coinciding with global flooding narratives and the Cop City riots. ### On the Lone Furry Shooter Narrative and Media Intent* "what's the lone wolf thing? And then I see these lone wolf shooters making beasts of men. **Why are two of the high-profile political assassins tied to the furry fetish?**"* "what I'm thinking is this new version of the mass shooter **is a constructed villain for the right**".* "The agenda is to get a **bipartisan agreement on social media ID and increased regulation of speech online**".* "the leftist Antifa, that's the other part of it, **leftist Antifa satanic transfer shooter is a manufactured villain**". ### On Noise and Methodical Analysis* "They apply so many different calculators in their numerology that it's **very easy to manufacture connections**".* "what we have here is truly an example of the **texas sharpshooter fallacy**".* "The less evidence they show, the more evidence there is for a cover-up. **You see how that works?**".* "I use this term [meta script] to describe the **script that contains the fake future events that will be grafted onto the historic timeline** as we live it".
Send us a textA gaming detour. A bold new audiobook format. And then a plunge into the oceanic heart of Avatar: The Way of Water that even a skeptical co-host didn't expect to love. We start with Oblivion's sprawling quest design and the surprising charm of getting lost without markers, then pivot to Audible's full-cast Harry Potter experiment—layered narration, ambient sound, and voices that feel like theater without sacrificing storytelling. That production craft becomes our springboard to Pandora, where performance capture turns pixels into people and water into memory.Once we hit the reefs, we get personal. We talk about what makes this sequel feel richer: a family on the run, new biomes that force growth, and a community whose bodies and culture have evolved for the sea. Quaritch's return as a recombinant lands like wicked irony—becoming what he hates to destroy it—and Kiri's mystery hums in the background, a soulful knot tied by Sigourney Weaver's uncanny performance. We dig into Spider's controversial choices, Neytiri's razor-edged grief, and the moral weight of the tulkun: a people with philosophy and song, set against human whaling that extracts Amrita with chilling efficiency. The effect isn't just visual spectacle; it's worldbuilding with ethics, family, and cost.We don't shy away from the hard hits. Neteyam's death, the suffocating tension aboard a sinking ship, and that scream of loss—all of it reminds us why this story lingers after the credits. We also peek at canon comics like The High Ground, how they frame the one-year gap, and why the film's more grounded path was the right call. Whether you're here for the tech, the tulkun, or the tangled loyalties, this conversation surfaces the reasons The Way of Water converts skeptics and rewards rewatchers. If this ride stirred something, follow the show, share with a friend who loves Pandora, and drop a five-star review so others can find us.
