Matt and Dawn are joined by site contributor Tyler to review four new shows available on different platforms this week. Firstly, Heartstopper, a show the trio have loved, concludes with a feature-length film, Heartstopper Forever. The condensed nature of Heartstopper Forever means a lot of what they loved about the series gets lost here, including a lot of the key characters. Next, BBC One has a new Sunday night drama that feels a little different. The Rapture, starring Ruth Madely. Prime Video has a new spy comedy thriller pairing the unlikely 'best friends' played by Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer. Ride or Die is a silly drama lacking in depth; despite that, Dawn finds the positive, and it leaves her sobbing. Finally, Dianne Morgan leaves Philomena Cunk behind for a new BBC comedy, Anne Droid, which sees her take on the role of an AI carer for a weary Sue Johnson. Despite the awful trailers for the show, it's a far deeper exploration of age and having to depend on others. Lastly, for our quiz, how many shows that feature robots can Matt and Tyler name? Spoiler: It's far more than you imagine!

Two powerhouse actresses are leading one of Prime Video's next big TV shows. ‘Ride or Die' is an action comedy about a couple of best friends who have to go on the run after one of them is revealed to be an international assassination. It stars Hannah Waddingham, of ‘Ted Lasso' fame, and Octavia Spencer, Academy Award winner for ‘The Help', as Judith Burton and Debbie Claybourne. Though this is the first project the two have worked on together, Spencer says the way they fell into a rhythm was seamless. “We were the only two people thought of for our roles, and then we both are active producers,” she told Hosking. “We are vested in this from different vantage points, so it was easy.” Waddingham agreed, telling Hosking they didn't have to think about that bit at all. “There was no kind of work required to find the chemistry – it was just there in spades.” Waddingham was approached directly for the role by Spencer and the show's creator Tessa Coates, Spencer saying they knew she was going to be as committed as she was. “There's nothing about that role that no one thought that Hannah would not be able to do." “I mean, it's a role of a lifetime, and my character is a role of my career,” Spencer told Hosking. “And we both are playing characters that we've never, they're complete departures from anything that we've done. Unsurprisingly, ‘Ride or Die' is filled with action sequences and stunt work – none of which, Waddingham says, is CGI. “I've got the bruises to prove it.” “If I was going to get on board with this woman [Spencer] and with Tessa Coates, with this glorious piece of work, I wasn't going to be the weak link.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Well, well, well ... this has to be THE most interesting presentation of an underdog protagonist that I've ever come across. Not only have the filmmakers gone above and beyond with respect to their audience's expectations, but they've innovated the heck out of the underdog. This you've got to see! And if you're not sure whether you've written a logline or a premise statement for your story (or why you'd need both and when you'd use them) then Melanie's got your back because in this episode, she explains it all. Stephen Ogilvie is in hospital with serious wounds after the attack, and a 30-year-old Sudanese man has been charged with attempted murder. Horror legends and icons collide in this week's history lesson: Alien (1979) opens in U.S. theaters, turning deep space into a haunted house, while Drag Me to Hell, Stranger Things 4, Wrong Turn, and Ma reshape what cursed horror looks like on screen. Rachel and Simon speak with the novelist Kathryn Stockett. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Kathryn moved to New York after university and spent almost a decade working in magazine publishing and marketing. In 2001, reeling from the 9/11 attacks and missing home, Kathryn started writing "The Help". The story of black maids and their white employers in Jackson in the 1960s became a sleeper hit in 2009 - it went on to sell 15 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a film in 2011. (The movie grossed more than $220 million at the box office; Octavia Spencer won an Oscar for her portrayal of Minny, one of the maids.) In 2011, director Tate Taylor adapted Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel into a feature film with an all-star cast including Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, Allison Janney, Cicely Tyson, and Sissy Spacek all getting a piece of the pie. Set among upper-class white families in early 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, aspiring journalist Skeeter (Stone) chronicles the lives of the black maids who play pivotal roles in running households and raising children, against the backdrop of segregation and the struggle for civil rights. The film sliced off a decadent $222 million against its $25 million budget, and scored multiple Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress (Davis) and two nods for Best Supporting Actress for Chastain and Spencer, with the latter actress taking home the statue. However, the film left a bad taste in some critics' mouths, who called out "white savior" tropes and the film's playbook "awards bait" scripting. Now we're taking out our notebooks, pouring ourselves a glass of sweet tea, and washing down a second helping of dessert for The Help! Pop culture chaos, NASA math, and one extremely suspicious "Not a Lesbian" bumper sticker collide in this hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt episode of Put Your Books Down. Natalie and Angela dive into Hidden Figures and unpack why this powerful film hits so much harder than your average space movie. From NASA history and civil rights to Kevin Costner discourse and accidental feminist manifestos, the hosts balance humorous commentary with real conversations about racism, women's contributions, and the genius of the women behind America's space program. Along the way, they debate whether Kevin Costner is secretly a rom-com actor, confess their confusion about Star Wars timelines, and give flowers to Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe for delivering unforgettable performances. If you love TV & film analysis, shared personal stories, and unfiltered pop culture conversations, this episode belongs in your queue immediately.

Kathryn Stockett's The Help captivated millions of readers and brought national attention to the complex relationships between Black housekeepers and their White employers during the Civil Rights era in Mississippi. It also became an Academy Award winning film just two years later, with Kathryn's friend Octavia Spencer winning for Best Supporting Actress. Now, 17 years later, she's back with her long-awaited second novel, The Calamity Club. Set in 1933 in Oxford, Mississippi, it follows a group of resourceful women with a “terrible, awful but very profitable idea” to make enough money to survive during the Great Depression. In true Stockett form, it's full of memorable characters, hilarious scenes, and plenty of heartbreak. Sid talks to Kathryn about how her mother's struggles as a divorced woman in the 1970s inspired her new book, why some characters came more easily than others, and how she sees her job as a Southern woman. Imagine that you are living in your car. One day, it's stolen for a joyride, abandoned and eventually towed away. You get a court order for the return of your car, but then discover that your very home, your 1991 Camry, has been sold for $175. Later, you find out that the towing company has the car back in their possession and holds it hostage for over a year, accruing $21,684 in storage fees. Amanda Ogle didn't have to imagine it because this happened to her in 2017. To help navigate the bureaucratic nightmare, she enlisted the help of Kevin Eggers, J.D. '17, who had just graduated from UW Law and was providing legal aid through the Northwest Consumer Law Center. Ogle's case was Eggers' very first out of law school. After a Seattle Times reporter wrote about the situation, Ogle was contacted by screenwriters who wanted to make her story into a movie. "Tow" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and opened in theaters nationwide on March 20, 2026. Directed by Stephanie Laing, it stars Rose Byrne and features an ensemble cast including Octavia Spencer, Demi Lovato, Dominic Sessa, Ariana Debose and Corbin Bernsen. In this episode of Discovery, we talk with Eggers and Ogle about the towing dispute and their experiences with the real-life case turning into a movie.
Mike sits down with director Stephanie Laing to discuss Tow — a true-story drama about one woman's year-long legal war against a predatory towing company and the system behind it.Amanda Ogle (Rose Byrne) is living in her 1991 Toyota Camry on the streets of Seattle when the car — her only lifeline — gets impounded, leaving her with a bill for $21,634 she has no hope of paying. What follows is battle for dignity against an indifferent bureaucracy, with support from a pro bono lawyer (Dominic Sessa) and a shelter manager (Octavia Spencer) who believes in her. Laing, a veteran of Palm Royale and Physical, brings an empathetic eye to the material without flinching from the grinding reality of homelessness and addiction.Mike and Laing discuss adapting a real person's story, the challenge of making systemic failure feel intimate, and what drew her from television to the feature format.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

O debate vai além do filme e conecta o conteúdo a discussões atuais, mantendo o tom crítico e bem-humorado característico do podcast.
Laugh, cry, and reflect with us as Deborah Roberts shares why, in a divided world, the bonds between sisters — and the women who become like sisters — may matter more than ever. She has reported from war zones, interviewed world leaders, and earned Peabody and Emmy Awards for her journalism — but ABC News 20/20 co-anchor Deborah Roberts says her most personal story yet begins at home. This week, Deborah joins us to talk about her new book, Sisters Loved and Treasured: Stories of Unbreakable Bonds, a warmhearted celebration of one of life's most enduring relationships. In Sisters Loved and Treasured, Deborah curates a collection of conversations, meditations, and anecdotes from her own sisters, celebrity friends, and everyday people alike, who share deeply personal accounts of how their relationships as sisters shaped their lives. She writes candidly about feeling lost in a big family, the joy and strain of sibling relationships, and the heartbreak of losing two sisters. The book features more than 50 personal stories from Viola Davis, Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush, Arianna Huffington, Octavia Spencer, and many more. But sisterhood, Deborah reminds us, isn't only defined by blood. The book also explores how sisterhood transcends biological lines — and how the bonds between women friends can be just as powerful and sustaining. Alaska is the largest state in the union. It is also one of the deadliest places in America to be an Indigenous woman. Alaska Native people make up roughly one-fifth of the state's population but account for more than sixty percent of its recorded homicide victims. Four of the ten American cities with the highest per-capita rates of missing and murdered Indigenous women are located in Alaska. And for decades, a quiet, unspoken policy within the Anchorage Police Department — known internally as NHI, or "no human involved" — ensured that the women most at risk received the least protection. This episode is the story of what that policy made possible, and what a community of determined women did about it. In 2017, Brian Steven Smith — a South African national living in Anchorage — was arrested after a woman brought a memory card to police containing footage of him torturing and murdering thirty-year-old Kathleen Jo Henry, an Alaska Native woman he'd picked up near a Walmart and brought to a midtown hotel where he had maintenance access. During his interrogation, Smith voluntarily confessed to a second murder — that of Veronica Abouchuk, fifty-two, an Alaska Native woman from the village of Stebbins whose remains had been lying near Earthquake Park for more than a year. He was convicted in February of twenty-twenty-four on all fourteen counts and sentenced to two hundred and twenty-six years in July of twenty-twenty-four.But the case didn't end there.Photographs recovered from Smith's devices showed a third woman — appearing dead or unconscious, with blood visible, a man's foot standing over her body. Those photographs sat in a case file for five years. It took a community advocate digging through sentencing documents to find them and publish them. Within hours, the family of Cassandra Boskofsky, missing since August of twenty-nineteen, recognized her. Smith was never charged in her death. Her remains have never been found. In September of 2024, her family held a presumptive death hearing and a civilian jury of six ruled her death a homicide — the only official acknowledgment her family has ever received. Also discussed in this episode: the NHI designation and the testimony of former APD officer Michael Livingston, who spent twenty-eight years on the force and is now a full-time MMIP advocate; the missed opportunity when a woman named Alicia Youngblood told police in 2019 that Smith had confessed a murder to her, and police did nothing; the question of Ian Calhoun, a man prosecutors believe probably knew about at least one of Smith's murders and who has never been charged; and the HBO and Investigation Discovery documentary series "Lost Women of Alaska," executive produced and narrated by Octavia Spencer, which premiered February twenty-fifth, twenty-twenty-six.There are two rewards currently outstanding. Five hundred dollars for information leading to the recovery of Cassandra Boskofsky's remains, and five hundred dollars for information leading to the arrest of Ian Calhoun. One of the breakout hits of 2016 was this based-on-a-true-story tale of the first manned missions to outer space. Focusing on the black women at NASA - mathematicians, engineers, and computers - who made these early spaceflights a reality through sheer brainpower while often going unrecognized for their contributions, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe star in this adaptation of Margot Lee Shetterly's book. Director Theodore Melfi chose Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge, and Glen Powell to round out the cast in this Best Picture Oscar nominee. But does too much melodrama subtract from the sum of this inspirational biopic? In honor of Black History Month, we're doing the math to see if all the accolades tallied by Hidden Figures still add up ten years after release. Heather Vickery and Alan Seales sit down with Troy Horne, a multi-hyphenate creative whose career spans music, Broadway, television, entrepreneurship, and authorship. The conversation explores what it really means to take intentional risks—especially in midlife—and how clarity, courage, and self-trust compound over time. Troy shares how his creative journey began with a childhood performance in church that revealed both his talent and his appetite for risk. From there, he followed a path shaped by persistence rather than certainty, navigating choir, talent shows, and eventually national television on Star Search. That experience became an early lesson in how the entertainment industry actually works—where talent matters, but timing, narrative, and business needs often matter just as much. The discussion traces Troy's decision to move to Los Angeles with limited resources, highlighting the importance of “networking sideways” rather than chasing gatekeepers. Troy recounts his time working alongside peers who would later become industry leaders, including Octavia Spencer, and how those early peer relationships proved more valuable than traditional ladder-climbing. A pivotal moment in the episode is Troy's Broadway story. While auditioning for Rent, he turned down a touring role because it conflicted with his personal values and family priorities. That clarity led to an unexpected outcome: a Broadway role as Tom Collins. This moment anchors a central theme of the episode—knowing what you want, and being willing to say no, often creates space for the right yes. The episode culminates in a discussion of Troy's latest book, Middle Management: How to Find Meaning, Clarity, and Success in the Second Half of Life. Troy outlines the mindset shifts required for midlife reinvention, including the necessity of quieting external noise, reconnecting with one's internal voice, and recognizing that experience—not youth—is the true advantage of the second half of life. Throughout the episode, Troy reinforces the idea that reinvention is not about starting over, but about reapplying everything you already know with greater intention. Midlife, he argues, is not a closing chapter—it is often the moment when the best tools, clearest values, and boldest opportunities finally converge. Connect With Us:
